The story of a human couple (Bomman and Bellie) showering love towards the orphaned elephant calves is striking, because of how it is set in a dense forest that is extremely prone to adverse interactions between humans and animals.

In Mudumalai and adjoining regions, there have been several instances of local residents being fatally attacked by wild animals and there have also been cruel and mindless acts of violence that people have committed against wildlife.

In early 2021, WION had reported from Mudumalai about how miscreants had hurled a burning object to chase away an injured wild tusker, eventually leading to its tragic and painful death.

Protagonists of Oscar-winning docu 'The Elephant Whisperers' can't watch the film at home, here's why

After providing valuable scientific data and serving the science community for more than a decade, the Indo-French satellite 'Megha-Tropiques' (MT-1) now rests in peace at a remote location in the Pacific Ocean.

Just as they had intended, the Indian space agency, ISRO, successfully de-orbited the satellite (gradually brought the satellite closer to Earth from its orbit) and made it re-enter the Earth's atmosphere.

This process is a brutal one where the re-entering object undergoes sustained exposure to high speeds and temperatures well over 2500 degrees Celsius, thus completely burning it up.

ISRO on Tuesday announced that the re-entry experiment was successfully, adding that they performed two 20-minute firings of the satellites on-board propulsion system.

This firing was done to ensure that the satellite gets pulled further into the influence of Earth's gravity and eventually burns up as it enters the denser layers of the Earth's atmosphere.

"The final perigee (the closest distance the satellite is from the earth) was estimated to be less than 80 km indicating that the satellite would enter the denser layers of the Earth's atmosphere and subsequently undergo structural disintegration. The re-entry aero-thermal flux analysis confirmed that there would be no surviving large debris fragments" ISRO said.

Based on telemetry data, ISRO also confirmed that the satellite re-entered Earth's atmosphere and would have disintegrated, with the final impact somewhere deep in the Pacific Ocean. The entire process of de-orbiting and re-entry was carried out by ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC), Bengaluru.&nbsp;

The complex process of manoeuvring the satellite, lowering its orbit, facilitating re-entry and burning it up in the upper atmosphere is part of ISRO's effort to reduce space debris.

WION had earlier reported, based on a NASA revelation, that there are more than 47,000 pieces of space debris that are larger than 10cm in size. Had the de-orbiting not been done, MT-1 too could have ended up as a long-term resident in space, without serving any useful purpose.

While larger pieces of debris such as defunct satellites and rocket upper stages are easier to track, it is the smaller pieces of millimetre-sized debris that pose more of a threat to space assets and space-walking astronauts.

ISRO has taken up proactive measures to improve the compliance level with the internationally accepted guidelines on space debris mitigation, the Indian Space agency said.&nbsp;Efforts are underway to build indigenous capabilities for tracking and monitoring space objects to safeguard Indian space assets.

ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM) has been established to spearhead such activities, ISRO added.&nbsp;

'Megha-Tropiques' was an&nbsp;Indo-French Joint Satellite Mission for studying the water cycle and energy exchanges in the tropics. The main objective of this mission is to understand the life cycle of convective systems that influence the tropical weather and climate and their role in associated energy and moisture budget of the atmosphere in tropical regions.

The payload of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar(NISAR) imaging satellite arrived in Bengaluru, on a US Air Force C17 Globemaster III strategic airlift plane.

The satellite payload that was flown in from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, will be taken to India's UR Rao Satellite Center in Bengaluru, where the payload will be integrated into the satellite bus (structure) and undergo further testing.

In February, top officials from ISRO and NASA conducted the ceremonial flagging off for the satellite payload from JPL, California. The announcement of the satellite having arrived in India was shared by the US Consulate General, Chennai.&nbsp;

NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) observatory jointly developed by the American and Indian space agencies. It is meant to carry L and S, dual-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), a highly powerful, all-weather, day and night means of imaging from space, that can help researchers and scientists observe minute changes in Earth’s land and ice surfaces, down to fractions of an inch.

Since early 2021, engineers and technicians at JPL have been integrating and testing NISAR’s two radar systems – the L-band SAR provided by JPL and the S-band SAR built by ISRO.&nbsp;

JPL, which is managed for NASA by Caltech in Pasadena, leads the U.S. component of the project and is providing the mission’s L-band SAR. NASA is also providing the radar reflector antenna, the deployable boom, a high-rate communication subsystem for science data, GPS receivers, a solid-state recorder, and payload data subsystem.

ISRO is providing the spacecraft bus, the S-band SAR, the launch vehicle, and associated launch services and satellite mission operations.

NISAR will gather radar data with a drum-shaped reflector antenna almost 40 feet (12 metres) in diameter. It will use a signal-processing technique called interferometric synthetic aperture radar, or InSAR, to observe changes on Earth, which can be used to predict natural disasters, and track climate change.

"The observations NISAR makes will help researchers measure the ways in which Earth is constantly changing by detecting both subtle and dramatic movements. Slow-moving variations of a land surface can precede earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions, and data about such movement could help communities prepare for natural hazards. Measurements of melting sea ice and ice sheets will improve understanding of the pace and impacts of climate change, including sea level rise" said NASA.&nbsp;

Over the course of its three-year prime mission, the satellite will observe nearly the entire planet every 12 days, making observations day and night, in all weather conditions. “Today, we come one step closer to fulfilling the immense scientific potential NASA and ISRO envisioned for NISAR when we joined forces more than eight years ago,” Chairman, ISRO, Dr. S. Somanath had said earlier.

During the flag-off ceremony, JPL Director, Laurie Leshin said, "By delivering measurements at unprecedented precision, NISAR’s promise is a new understanding and positive impact in communities. Our collaboration with ISRO exemplifies what’s possible when we tackle complex challenges together."

With the SUV-sized satellite payload having arrived on Indian soil in a special cargo container, after a 9,000-mile(14,000-kilometer) flight, the key responsibilities will henceforth be carried out by ISRO. The NISAR satellite is expected to be launched in early 2024 from India's Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh state, on board a GSLV rocket.&nbsp;

A contingent of 120 personnel from the French Army are in southern India for the "FRINJEX-23'—a first-of-its-kind exercise between the Indian and French Army, focusing on providing Humanitarian aid for the civilian population in times of need.

While Indian and French Armed Forces conduct routine combat exercises, a HADR-centric one is a unique development.

On Monday, the French contingent arrived in the southern port city of Kochi, Kerala, onboard the French Amphibious Assault ship “Dixmude” and then proceeded to the capital city Thiruvananthapuram.

Starting Tuesday, the Indian Army's Pangode Military Station in Thiruvananthapuram will host the two-day joint exercise aimed at enhancing the cooperation, interoperability and mutual understanding between the Indian and French troops and boosting bilateral defence ties.&nbsp;

Major Kalfon said that the visiting French contingent comprise of six officers and 114 troops from the French Army's 6th&nbsp;Armoured Brigade, which specialises in amphibious operations.

From the Indian Army side, 120 personnel from India's 91 Infantry Brigade are representing in this exercise. This brigade is the only one in the Indian Army to perform amphibious operations.&nbsp;

"Our contingent comprises a wide mix of troops with different capabilities - light cavalry, engineer regiment and people from infantry and artillery," Major Kalfon told WION.

Apart from the HADR operations, the two-day exercise will also feature exercises such as weapon-firing, securing of communication lines, providing first-aid, cultural exchange, combat in urban scenario etc. Indian and French troops will intermingle and work together as part of small teams to learn the best practices and gain the experience of working together on a common objective.

Despite it being designed for an operational life of three years, the satellite performed for more than a decade (until 2021). ISRO has predicted that the re-entry and final splashdown of the satellite would take place between 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm Indian Standard Time, on Tuesday, March 7th, 2023.

What are De-orbiting and Controlled re-entry?&nbsp;

With low earth orbits(orbits 400-2000kms above the earth's surface) getting increasingly overpopulated with satellites and space debris, there are several risks posed to operational space assets. The debris ranges from centimetre-sized objects to meters-wide used rocket stages and defunct satellites. All objects in Low Earth orbit travel at a speed of nearly 28,000kmph and a collision between two objects at such high speeds would create endless debris and threaten several space assets including satellites and space stations.&nbsp;

To avoid such hazards, space agencies make attempts to de-orbit defunct satellites by gradually manoeuvring them closer to earth and eventually ensure that they burn up while re-entering the upper atmosphere and splashing down in uninhabited land or oceans. Another option is to bring the satellite into an orbit around the earth, where it would spend a lesser number of years circling the earth, than in its original orbit.&nbsp;

What is ISRO attempting with Megha-Tropiques?

In its original orbit, at an altitude of 867 km and an inclination of 20 degrees, the defunct Megha-Tropiques satellite would have circled the earth in an uncontrolled manner for more than 100 years and would have remained as space debris. Though MT1 is not designed for performing a de-orbiting and controlled re-entry, the Indian Space agency is attempting to do so, by precisely manoeuvring the satellite using its leftover onboard fuel.&nbsp;

According to ISRO, "about 125 kg on-board fuel remained unutilised at its end-of-mission that could pose risks for accidental break-up(in space). This left-over fuel was estimated to be sufficient to achieve a fully controlled atmospheric re-entry to impact an uninhabited location in the Pacific Ocean". Given that MT1 is more than a decade old and not all of its systems would function exactly as expected, ISRO carried out further planning by involving its experts from across domains -&nbsp;mission, operations, flight dynamics, aerodynamics, propulsion, controls, navigation, thermal, and other sub-system design teams.&nbsp;

Based on their calculations, ISRO zeroed into an&nbsp;uninhabited area in the Pacific Ocean between 5°S to 14°S latitude and 119°W to 100°W longitude, as the targeted re-entry zone for MT1. Since August 2022, 18 orbit manoeuvres were performed to progressively lower the satellite's orbit and bring it closer to earth.&nbsp;"The final two de-boost burns and the ground impact are expected to take place between 16:30 IST to 19:30 IST on March 7, 2023," ISRO said. The Indian space agency also added that no large fragments of the satellite are likely to survive the aerothermal heating during re-entry. Re-entry temperatures(when an object from space re-enters earth's atmosphere) could be as much as 2500 degrees Centigrade, thus burning up most objects.

International guidelines for spacefaring nations stipulate certain space debris mitigation guidelines for the safe disposal and sustainable management of defunct space assets. Though this satellite is not designed to perform such controlled de-orbit and re-entry, ISRO is undertaking the challenging experiment as there are conducive parameters to carry it out. "This satellite with sufficient left-over fuel presented a unique opportunity&nbsp;to test the relevant methodologies and understand the associated operational nuances of post mission disposal by direct re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere," ISRO said.

According to the firm, their camera-enabled robotic arms are already proven for operating in manufacturing setups where Computer Numeric Control(CNC) machines are being used. In simple terms, CNC is the automated control of machining tools such as drills, mills, lathes, and grinders, via a computer. The company revealed that they have entered into commercial engagements with a leading CNC machine manufacturer in India and two automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers(OEMs) in North America, for offering different solutions.&nbsp;

In automotive assembly, 'Kitting' is a process where different parts are picked from random orientations and made into kits before assembly. For example, in automotive manufacturing, kits of parts are delivered to the next stage of production at exactly the time that a kit is needed. CynLr said that they are working to solve such challenging use cases in Automotive Assembly.

To further their R&amp;D efforts, CynLr recently inaugurated a 13,000sq ft facility in Bengaluru, with a capacity for 25 robots to develop electronics, software and camera solutions. "We are making advances in the grasping system(ability to hold objects) of the robotic arm. The camera provides motion-sensing, colour and object depth- all in one system and such factors will help the robotic arm determine- what object it is, how far to reach, how to apply this data and how to pick it. Be it a bag of chips or a nut and bolt, the system will help the robot pick it" he explained. He added that such tasks could be carried out with no pre-training and it is a first-of-its-kind.

In another interesting application of their technology, the company is said to be working on developing vision and intelligence technology to enable robotic arms to make Dosas. This requirement is said to have come from a client in North America and the CynLr team is looking to modify robotic arms from just picking and performing simple actions to even cooking the perfect dosas!&nbsp;

Exercise Desert Flag VIII An Indian contingent of 110 Air Warriors is at Al Dhafra airbase of the UAE, taking part in Exercise Desert Flag VIII. The Indian Air Force is participating with five LCA Tejas fighters and two C-17 Globemaster III strategic heavy-lifter aircraft. Notably, this is the first-ever international flying exercise that India's indigenously-built Tejas will be flying in. Exercise Shinyuu Maitri On the sidelines of the Indo-Japan Joint Army Exercise Dharma Guardian, the respective air forces are taking part in Exercise Maitri 23 which focuses on heavy-lift transport aircraft operations. The IAF contingent is taking part in one C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, whereas the Japanese JASDF will be fielding the C-2 transport aircraft. In terms of specifications and features, the HTT-40 is a twin-seater, fully aerobatic turboprop aircraft with a fully air-conditioned cockpit, modern avionics etc. The aircraft is also capable of being hot-refuelled (to refuel while the engine is running) and is equipped with zero-zero ejection seats (which enable ejections at low speeds and low altitudes, even in ground mishaps).&nbsp;

The procurement will include the 70 aircraft, their associated equipment and training aids including simulators. Being an indigenous solution, the aircraft is said to be configurable for upgrades to incorporate the futuristic requirements of the Indian Armed Forces. The HTT-40 contains nearly 56 per cent indigenous content, which will progressively increase to over 60 per cent through the indigenisation of major components and subsystems.&nbsp;

To fulfil this order, HAL would engage Indian private industry, including Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), in its supply chain and this procurement is said to have the potential to provide direct employment to 1,500 personnel and indirect employment for up to 3,000 individuals in more than 100 MSMEs.&nbsp;

Indian Air Force to get 70 'HTT-40' made-in-India trainer aircraft from HAL

The Indian space agency, ISRO, has announced the successful test firing of the 'CE-20' cryogenic engine that will be used for the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

The 'CE-20' is an indigenous cryogenic engine developed by ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. It powers the top-most and third stage of India's heaviest rocket LVM3.

Liquid-fuelled engines that are meant for the flight are test fired on the ground and then cleaned and assembled onto a rocket, unlike solid-fuelled engines where only a single and complete burn is possible.&nbsp;

A cryogenic engine is powered by super-cooled gases, which are in liquid form. The engine's combustion chamber burns liquid hydrogen (maintained at minus 253 degrees Celsius) and liquid oxygen (maintained at minus 183degrees Celsius) and this is a very efficient combination of fuels as it provides more thrust per kilogram of fuel it uses, when compared with other fuels. The hydrogen (fuel) and oxygen (oxidiser) combination is also an environment-friendly option, as opposed to gasoline fuels.&nbsp;

In the initial portion of the flight, the first-stage 'S200' and second-stage 'L110' of the LVM3 rocket will take the Chandryaan-3 spacecraft off the ground and into space. Thereafter, the CE-20 will be responsible for further accelerating the Chandryaan-3 module in space and ejecting it into an 'Earth parking orbit', where the spacecraft rotates around the earth with extreme variations in its distance to earth.

Roughly, the spacecraft would be more than 45,000km away from Earth at its farthest point in the orbit (apogee) and 180km away from Earth in its closest point in orbit(perigee). From there on, the Chandrayaan-3 module would use its on-board propulsion to perform orbit raising manoeuvres to progressively move further away from earth and be captured by Lunar gravity and finally attempt a Lunar landing.

Regarding the latest test, ISRO said that it was carried out at&nbsp;the ISRO Propulsion Complex, Mahendragiri, in Tamil Nadu.

"The hot test was carried out for a planned duration of 25 seconds at the High-Altitude Test Facility. All the propulsion parameters during the test were found satisfactory and closely matched with predictions" it added.

Further, the cryogenic engine will be integrated with&nbsp;propellant tanks, stage structures, and associated fluid lines to prepare the fully integrated flight cryogenic stage.

ISRO refers to the Chandrayaan-3 launch mission as LVM3-M4, indicating the fact that it is the fourth operational launch of the LVM3, which is India's heaviest and largest rocket.

The maiden operational launch of LVM3 was Chandrayaan-2 in 2019 after the rocket flew on its second operational and maiden commercial mission in October 2022, ferrying 36 satellites for UK-based firm OneWeb.

LVM3-M3, the third operational launch of LVM3, will be carried out for OneWeb in March 2023, following which the Chandryaan-3 will be carried out in the second half of this year or by early 2024. The Chandrayaan-3 flight will be the seventh launch mission of LVM3.

As per ISRO's nomenclature, a brand-new rocket undergoes a handful of developmental flights (denoted by a 'D' prefix along with a launch number) and based on the successful outcome of those, the vehicle is declared operational and then performs routine missions (denoted by the 'M' prefix along with a launch number).

The three-stage LVM3 rocket weighs close to 650 tons at lift-off and the vehicle is powered by solid, liquid and cryogenic fuels, in the same order.&nbsp;

ISRO successfully test fires cryogenic engine that will help Chandryaan-3 begin journey to Moon

Indian space agency ISRO and its Argentinian counterpart (CONAE) are holding talks to explore the potential opportunities for expanding space relations between the two nations.

Earlier, Dr Hugo Javier Gobbi, Ambassador of the Argentine Republic to India called on Dr S Somanath, Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space at ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru,&nbsp;

The ISRO chief also extended an invitation to the Argentinian ambassador to participate in the G20 Space Leaders Economy Meeting (SELM) precursor event in Shillong in April 2023. The ambassador also expressed the interest of Argentina's Minister of Science, Technology &amp; Innovation to visit ISRO in July 2023.

ISRO is not just collaborating with established space powers such as Russia, the USA, Japan and France, but is also looking to explore collaborations with emerging nations in the space sector. Being carried out in partnership with the Indian external affairs ministry, such collaborations with newer entrants in the global space sector are aimed at exploring markets, Somanath had said earlier.&nbsp;

Speaking about the scope for India to carry out space sector business activities, Somanath said that India would like to explore the markets in Latin America, Arab nations, Africa and Southeast Asia and collaborate with them for mutual benefit.

He had mentioned the possibilities of Indian firms building satellites for foreign nations and also providing ground stations and relevant hardware.

From 2020 onwards, Indian private firms and startups have been authorised to carry out end-to-end space activities including the building and launching of rockets and satellites, establishing ground segments etc.

Since then, a considerable number of firms have made progress in building and testing their own rocket engines. Private firms have also proven their capability to build rockets and launch them into the upper atmosphere and are aiming for space, while satellite companies have developed their spacecraft and launched them on both Indian and foreign rockets

While ISRO has developed end-to-end space capability – from building and launching rockets, building satellites, ground segments, and space support infrastructure— the Argentinian agency is working on developing its orbital-class rockets and has carried out a handful of satellite missions in collaboration with other space agencies.

A new variant of an aircraft made by India's Government-run defence-aerospace firm Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has received approval for carrying out commercial flights for civilians. HAL announced that its modified aircraft received clearance from India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Known as ‘Hindustan 228-201 LW’, the aircraft is a modified version of the Dornier-228 that HAL has been licence manufacturing in India. the Dornier-228 has been in use for short-range maritime patrol and surveillance by Indian Navy and Coast Guard.&nbsp;

According to HAL, the DGCA-approved variant has a maximum take-off weight of 5695kgs with 19 passenger seating capacity. With this modification, the aircraft would fall in the Sub-5700 kg aircraft category. HAL says that the variant offers operational benefits for operators such as reduced pilot qualification requirements enabling pilots with Commercial Pilot License to fly the aircraft, enhanced availability of pilot pool for the aircraft and reduced operational cost.&nbsp;

The new variant will also result in reduced training requirements for flying and ground crew including aircraft maintenance engineers, HAL added. The Government-run company also has approval for a 6200kgs variant with the capacity to carry 19 passengers. The added weight would mean the ability to carry more cargo.

In terms of utility for civilian flights, it is foreseen that the new 19-seater aircraft would be flown on the short-flying routes that fall under the Indian Government's Regional Connectivity Scheme(RCS). The RCS scheme was initiated with the idea of offering low-cost, enhanced aviation infrastructure and air connectivity in tier II and tier III cities. The number of operational airports in India has significantly increased since the introduction of this scheme in 2016.
