From 16 March onwards, the baby elephant was being provided a liquid-based diet and was being monitored by the medical staff and the caretaker couple Bomman and Bellie. According to officials, the baby was being fed lactogen.

However, baby elephants don't secrete adequate enzymes to digest lactogen and such enzymes are very low in babies that are not being fed by the mother. Officials suspect that the lactogen began to slowly accumulate in the baby's body and there were no visible symptoms of this, as the baby continued to remain active and playful. As undigested lactogen accumulated in the baby's system, it began to cause diarrhoea, said officials.&nbsp;

On Thursday, having noticed diarrhoea, the veterinary doctors began to provide glucose, which was mixed with medicines. But the baby elephant died around 1am on Friday, without responding to treatment. It is suspected that diarrhoea and death would have been caused by some allergies, however, a post-mortem is being conducted to study the exact cause of the baby's death.&nbsp;

Generally, drugs attract basic customs duty of 10 per cent, while certain categories of lifesaving drugs/vaccines attract a concessional rate of five&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;or nil. This comes after the government had been receiving multiple requests seeking Customs Duty relief for drugs and medicines used in the treatment of rare diseases. Earlier, the government had provided exemptions to specified drugs for the treatment of Spinal Muscular Atrophy(SMA) or Duchenne Muscular Atrophy. "Zolgensma", the drug imported for treatment of SMA costs around Rs.17 crore or more than two&nbsp;million dollars, thus earning it the title of being the world's most expensive drug.&nbsp;

"Drugs or Special Foods required for the treatment of these (rare) diseases are expensive and need to be imported. It is estimated that for a child weighing 10kg, the annual cost of treatment for some rare diseases may vary from Rs10 lakh to more than Rs one crore per year with treatment being lifelong and drug dose and cost, increasing with age and weight" the Government said in a statement. It was added that the Customs Duty exemption will result in substantial cost savings and provide much-needed relief to the patients.&nbsp;Pembrolixumab (Keytruda), a drug used in the treatment of various cancers, has also been fully exempted from basic Customs Duty.&nbsp;

As per an official statement, such an exemption can be availed by the individual imported by providing a certificate from the Central or State Director Health Services or District Medical Officer/Civil surgeon of the district.

However, in terms of 5G mobile devices, he said that Samsung India has witnessed a doubling of its 5G mobile business in 2022, when compared to 2021. He attributed this to the gradual rollout of 5G mobile connectivity services in India from 2022-end.&nbsp;

Referring to the trends witnessed in the Indian smartphone market, he said that Indian customers are buying more high-end devices and prefer to get future-proof gadgets, particularly considering the 5G services being available. He also pointed out the sales spike that his firm had been witnessing in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. He says that they have been selling phones (on a 10-month EMI as part of a Samsung Finance Plus initiative) to people in Tier 2 and 3 cities, and small towns, even when the individuals did not have access to credit cards or loans.

To boost the growth and contribution of India's private sector space firms and thereby increase India's share in the global space economy, a new Space Systems Design lab has been inaugurated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. An initiative of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), the lab was inaugurated by Dr S. Somanath, Chairman of&nbsp;the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Dr Pawan Goenka, Chairman, IN-SPACe. IN-SPACe is an autonomous nodal agency under the Department of Space, the Government of India, and it works towards facilitating the participation of private firms in space activities.&nbsp;

According to IN-SPACe, the space systems design lab is equipped with software tools to design, analyse and perform mission simulations for space systems. The lab will enable space start-ups to transform their innovative ideas into onboard implementable modules. The facility will offer capabilities to perform real-time hardware tests and evaluations.&nbsp;

Dr S. Somanath, Chairman&nbsp;of ISRO and Secretary of the Department of Space said that such facilities enable non-government entities (NGEs) to play a vital role in developing state-of-the-art space technologies. He mentioned that the goal of NGE's participation in space activities is aimed at enhancing the scale of India's space economy from the present 2% to 10% of the global economy. He reaffirmed ISRO's commitment towards the same goal.&nbsp;

"The lab has computing resources comprising 16 workstations and high-performance computing multi-core (up to 400 cores) servers. The software resources include System Tool Kit, Advance Design Systems, Pathwave system design, high-frequency structure simulation, 3D CAD Mach 3, Simcenter 3D space System (Thermal and cooling), Finite Element analysis structure (FEAST) and OpticStudio (Zemax) etc., which can contribute in mission planning to RF, Structural and thermal design and analysis of space systems," IN-SPACe said.&nbsp;

It added that periodic workshops will be conducted at the space systems design lab to impart practical hands-on training to the private sector firms and start-ups.&nbsp;

Mentioning the salient features of the lab and how it would help the emerging space sector firms, Dr Pawan Goenka, Chairman, IN-SPACe, said that the lab resources would help in building prototypes with the least number of iterations and thereby significantly reduce the turnaround time and R&amp;D costs for startups. This is in line with the Indian Government's vision to provide infrastructure and technical support to space-sector start-ups and help them attain their goals faster and with lesser investment and input costs.&nbsp;

"Space systems design lab is a stepping stone in the&nbsp;endeavour to provide a conducive environment for the private space sector in the country. IN-SPACe design lab consists of high-end analysis and simulation software for mission simulation, modelling, visualising, optimising payload &amp; spacecraft, ground station, and launch vehicle avionics," he added.&nbsp;

India unveils Space System Design Lab, aimed to increase country’s share in global space economy

Indicating the commitment of the US Navy and Department of Defense to utilise ship repair and maintenance facilities in India, two large cargo ferrying vessels of the US Navy successfully underwent repairs in an Indian shipyard, over the last seven months. Matthew Perry underwent voyage repairs in Chennai for a little over two weeks — from March 11&nbsp;tp 27.&nbsp;

The USNS Matthew Perry measures 210 metres in length, and 32.3 metres in breadth and has 35,300&nbsp;tonnage. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken had expressed intent to utilise the ship repair facilities in India, at the US-India 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in Washington DC in April 2022.&nbsp;

In February 2023, Indian&nbsp;government-run defence and aerospace firm Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) said it’ll soon be performing maintenance and repairs on the engines of the American-origin MQ-9B drones.&nbsp;

The General Atomics MQ-9B High-Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) drones are currently in use by the Indian Navy for Maritime Surveillance requirements. While the Indian Navy uses drones that are leased from General Atomics, there are proposals to purchase 30 MQ-9B drones, 10 each for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. The maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of these drone engines at the HAL engine division in Bengaluru gain&nbsp;significance, given that talks are on for purchasing these drones for India's strategic use.

“HAL has been manufacturing and providing MRO support for TPE 331-5 engines for the last 40 years. We are also establishing facilities for manufacturing TPE 331-12B engines for HTT-40 (Hindustan Turbo trainer) project. The engine used on the MQ-9B Remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) belongs to the same family of engines with upgraded configuration to adapt to the RPAS technology," C.B. The Indian government-run shipbuilding firm, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) began the construction of six multi-purpose vessels for its German client HS Schiffahrts group.

A 'steel cutting' ceremony was performed on Monday at the CSL, commencing the construction of HS Eco freighter 7,000 DWT Multi-Purpose Vessels for the Germans. It has&nbsp;received orders to build a total of eight vessels.

Steel&nbsp;cutting is the first tangible step of the shipbuilding process, where the shipbuilder and customer press the start button of a laser cutter that cuts that steel sheet that ends up on the vessel's hull.&nbsp;

This marks the foray of India's CSL into the European shortsea shipping market, where these vessels are an integral part of the logistics network from North Sea ports to the south Mediterranean ports.

Sharing the specifications of the vessel, CSL said that the Ice Class Vessels measure 110 metres in length, 16.5 metres in breadth, and are equipped for the carriage of project cargo, heavy cargo, steel coils, containers, dry cargo, timber, paper and bulk cargoes etc., worldwide service trade, with a carrying capacity of 7,000 tons.

The vessels will be built under DNV Classification with flag of Portugal, meeting all the latest safety, quality, energy efficiency and performance requirements.&nbsp;

The steel cutting ceremony was attended by Heino Schepers and Hans-Bernd Schepers, Managing Directors of HS Schiffahrts Group, along with Madhu S Nair, CMD of CSL, along with other senior officials.

The CSL said that this foreign order is a testament to its expertise and capabilities in building high-quality vessels for clients worldwide.

For over twenty years, India' CSL has been involved in shipbuilding on an international level and has delivered vessels to Norway, USA, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, and the Middle East.

Could we ever imagine the presence of chemicals and adulterating agents such as urea, detergents, soap, starch, hydrogen peroxide, sodium-hydrogen-carbonate, and salt in the so-called "organic" and "farm-fresh" milk, fruit juices and cooldrinks that we regularly consume? Researchers at IIT Madras have developed a simple, pocket-sized and cost-effective paper-based test that can detect all the above chemicals from a liquid sample, all in a duration of 30 seconds.

The flat rectangular test strip is said to fit conveniently in a palm and is made for home use. It has been developed by researchers from IIT Madras, led by Dr. Pallab Sinha Mahapatra, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Dr Pallab and his team comprising Mr Subhashis Patari and Dr Priyankan Datta have developed this device for eventual use by the common people, to understand the quality of the liquids that they consume.

"This test kit is a three-dimensional rectangular strip, where the top portion comprises a slot where the liquid drops(to be tested)can be fed. The bottom side is a palette-like structure where there are multiple slots, each one capable of changing colour and denoting the presence of a particular chemical/adulterating agent. Sandwiched between the top and bottom layers, there is a material that will absorb the droplets of the sample and bring it in contact with the chemical sheets(individual test slots) in the bottom layers" Dr Pallab explained to WION. In simple terms, the test kit works like a pH paper, which changes colour in coming in contact with a liquid

According to the team, a liquid sample drop of even a few millilitres is adequate to carry out the test and deliver the result in 30 seconds. They also said that this was the most cost-effective method to test multiple common adulterating agents, for common people at home. However, the test does not determine the quantity of the adulterating agent, as is done with highly expensive equipment and advanced lab tests.

When WION queried about the certification, accuracy and sensitivity of the kit that they have developed, Dr Pallab said that the kit was quite sensitive and detected even small amounts of chemicals in edible liquids. However, he added that their kit was currently undergoing testing under laboratory conditions and is yet to receive a certification from an organization like the FSSAI( Food Safety and Standards Authority of India).

"We intend to complete the research and development and make this product available for the mass market as a home-test kit. For our lab purposes, we are now able to make the test kit for Rs.15 (approx. 20 cents), but when we get the certification and manufacture in larger numbers, the cost can be brought down further" Dr Pallab told WION. On an expected date for market roll-out, he said that it could be possible in a year or so.

IIT-developed paper test-kit instantly detects chemicals, adulterants in milk, juices

Both were commercial missions, where the LVM3 rocket ferried a total of 72 satellites of UK-based telecom firm OneWeb, thus earning ISRO (its commercial-arm NSIL) a total revenue of more than Rs.1100cr or $137 million. These two launch missions enabled OneWeb to complete its constellation comprising 618 broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit.&nbsp;

Notably, these are the only commercial missions that India's heaviest launcher has performed. OneWeb Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal revealed the contribution of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi in facilitating these commercial launches with ISRO, which falls under the Department of Space that is part of the prime minister's portfolio.&nbsp;

On the occasion of the completion of OneWeb's Gen1 constellation, Mittal said that India stepped up to help when the Bharti group and UK-govt backed company faced serious setbacks. Recalling the tough situation, he said that the Russia-Ukraine war had led to the cancellation of six launches that were contracted with the Russian space agency Roscosmos.&nbsp;

"The six launches were contracted and fully paid for(and after cancellation) we are struggling to get the money back. We lost 36 satellites and three dispensers(which eject the satellites into orbit) and a year's time," he said.&nbsp;

As per reports, after the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the Russian space agency demanded that OneWeb guarantee that their satellites won't be used for military purposes (against Russia). Added to this, Moscow's space industry had also been hit as a consequence of the war and Russia had demanded that the UK government sell its stake in OneWeb.&nbsp;

While OneWeb ended up cancelling the launches with the Russian agency on their Soyuz rockets, it has been unable to retrieve 36 satellites worth nearly $50 million from the Russia-operated spaceport in Kazakhstan.&nbsp;

"In the global commercial rocket launch industry, with Soyuz (Russian rocket) taken out, the scenario has not been easy. Only very few options are left. SpaceX gave us three rockets (despite OneWeb being a competitor to Elon Musk's Starlink) and Prime Minister Modi recognised the moment and directed the entire Indian space ecosystem to step up and give two rockets to OneWeb and that has been a gamechanger for us," Mittal said.&nbsp;

Referring to the two successful OneWeb launches carried out by ISRO, he said that ISRO and its commercial-arm NSIL had established themselves as serious and significant players in the global commercial launch market.&nbsp;

Elaborating on the opportunity that lay ahead for ISRO, Mittal said that there is a void created in the absence of workhorse launchers such as Russian Soyuz rockets, Europe Ariane V (retired) and the immense delays on the Ariane VI rocket. He expressed hope that India's ISRO would take up this opportunity to become a dominant competitor to SpaceX in the launch industry.&nbsp;

Speaking at the post-launch televised address, ISRO Chairman Dr S Somanath also acknowledged the role of the Indian prime minister and the Indian government in offering support and making the LVM3 rockets available for commercial launches.&nbsp;

"It was at such a short notice that this opportunity to launch 72 OneWeb satellites came to us. We had to get ready with required approvals and the processes to enable such commercial missions", he said.&nbsp;

As a government-run space agency, ISRO plans its missions well in advance and builds, and allocates rockets as per the national priorities and based on advance requests from customers. In such a scenario, making rockets available at short notice for commercial missions is quite challenging.&nbsp;

Dr Somanath also said that the two commercial launches of LVM3 had only increased ISRO's confidence in their largest rocket, which is also meant to perform the Gaganyaan astronaut mission. He revealed that the LVM-M3 rocket that flew on Sunday, March 26 had featured the twin 'S-200' motors that are designed with increased margins and features for Gaganyaan configuration. There were many more improvements in this rocket, which are aimed towards making it human-rated (suitable and safe for carrying astronauts).

ISRO earns $137mn as PM Modi asked ISRO to launch OneWeb satellites: OneWeb chairman

India's LVM3 rocket, the largest and heaviest launch vehicle built by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) ascended skywards at 9 am, from the second launchpad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.

Barely 15 seconds after the vehicle lifted off, the characteristic roar and crackle of its twin 'S200' solid-fuel engines were heard for more than an 8km radius around the spaceport, where thousands including children and enthusiasts had gathered to witness the historic launch from the open-to-public launch viewers gallery.

This is a dedicated commercial mission being carried out through ISRO's commercial arm NSIL (NewSpace India Limited).

The rocket was carrying 36 OneWeb Gen-1 satellites with a total mass of 5,805kg, into a 450km circular Low Earth Orbit with an inclination of 87.4° degrees. OneWeb is a UK-based firm in which India's Bharti Group is a major investor.

It was&nbsp;a 19-minute-long wait before the first satellite separated from the rocket. Thereafter, the process of the 'C25' cryogenic stage performing manoeuvres in space and ejecting the remaining 25 satellites took&nbsp;close to an hour.

OneWeb aims to offer high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity from space via its constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit.

Notably, this is also the shortest duration in which ISRO is carrying out two missions of the LVM3 rocket - on October 23, 2022 and March 26, 2022.

Such quick execution is being carried out to meet the timelines of the OneWeb, which will have a constellation of 618 satellites in place after Sunday's launch.

OneWeb has been utilising the launch services of SpaceX, Arianespace and ISRO to place all its 1st generation constellation satellites in orbit and OneWeb satellites have flown 17 times to date, ISRO will be carrying the 18th set.&nbsp;

"We are one launch away from achieving global coverage. This last launch with ISRO/NSIL will mark over 600 satellites in space, which is the number needed to go commercially live," a OneWeb spokesperson had told WION.

ISRO's largest rocket LVM3 lifts off successfully on 2nd commercial mission

Announcing the successful launch of India's heaviest rocket LVM3 in its second commercial mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said that all 36 satellites belonging to OneWeb were injected into the intended orbit.

In his post-launch address, ISRO Chairman Dr S Somanath said that ISRO is gearing up for impending launches of its PSLV, GSLV Mk2 and LVM3 rockets in the coming months.

Acknowledging that the LVM3 vehicle did extremely well in its 9 am launch mission on Sunday, Somanath said that the satellites were placed in orbit with minimal disturbance.

As per the plan, the rocket deployed 16 satellites in orbit initially and 20 satellites were deployed thereafter. ISRO initially confirmed the successful placement of 16 satellites in orbit and said that they would update regarding the deployment of the 20 remaining satellites when they receive tracking information about the same.

When satellites are deployed in space, often they are not immediately visible to ground-based tracking stations or even ship-borne tracking stations. It takes some time before satellites make the orbit and are visible in the range of the tracking stations.

D Radhakrishnan, Chairman of NSIL, the commercial arm of ISRO, said that this was an extremely momentous day. Just as was done in the October 2022 launch, the 'C25' cryogenic stage was used to perform a series of complex manoeuvres to inject the OneWeb satellites in nine batches of four each. He also reassured the customer OneWeb that ISRO-NSIL would be happy to provide more launch solutions as required.

S Mohana Kumar, the Mission Director of the LVM3-M3 mission said that the LVM3 rocket had shown its might and ruggedness in carrying heavy payloads to the required orbit. He also acknowledged team ISRO for having completed the launch campaign (the entire process of integrating, stacking, assembling and launching the rocket) of India's largest rocket in a record time of 72 days.

"We have done the rocket assembly in the 2nd vehicle assembly building and the entire vehicle integration was carried out under a single roof,” he said. He also thanked ISRO's numerous industry partners for supplying thousands of components and hardware to execute the launch successfully.

Referring to the steady and swift progress towards India's high-profile 'Gaganyaan' astronaut mission, chairman Somanath said that the first stage 'S200' twin boosters used on the LVM3-M3 mission was designed with higher margins and features geared towards Gaganyaan, he stated that progress towards Gaganyaan is happening incrementally.

As part of Gaganyaan, the Indian space agency is human-rating the LVM3 rocket (modifying it to be suitable, safe and reliable for ferrying humans to space). In recent years, ISRO has been developing hardware and conducting a host of tests of various systems and sub-systems in preparation for the Gaganyaan Mission.

India's CEA said that the group will discuss Global macroeconomic issues of relevance today and deliberate on International Policy Cooperation and the means to strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth. He added that this meeting was for exchanging information and experience on how different nations deal with food and energy insecurity issues, the results that each approach yielded, its unintended consequences etc. This is a senior bureaucrat-level meeting that is meant to facilitate communication, recognize problems and work on solutions.

Citing an example, the CEA mentioned how developed nations used fossil fuels to power their growth over the last two or more centuries and now want developing nations to make a switch to renewable energy and reduce emissions.

"To reduce dependence on fossil fuels and sustain with renewable energy, a nation needs rare-earth elements and critical minerals. This raised questions about when we can switch, the financial means to do so and how long this transition will take? What happens to existing fuel refineries, what happens to coal mines and thermal power plants ?" We will talk about how the energy transition(from fossil fuels to non-fossil) can be managed and how long the impact of this will last. He added that it was not necessary for every participating nation to accept the recommendations raised at the meeting.

When WION queried about India's announcement of finding 5.9mn tons of lithium reserves in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir and whether it would feature in the discussions, the CEA said that this particular grouping would not deal with that. However, he added that the time period from discovery to exploration, mining, extraction and commercial applications of such rare earth elements would at least take 10-15 years.

Speaking about the outcomes of this meeting, he said that the inputs generated in the two-day event would be shared at the G20 finance ministers, central bank governors meet that is to be held in Washington DC, during the second week of April.&nbsp;
