This aircraft is the first of 56 planes that the Indian Government had ordered&nbsp;for use by the Indian Air Force. While the first 16 aircraft will be assembled in Spain, the remaining will be manufactured and assembled by Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) in Gujarat, India.</p>

<p>Equipped to ferry troops and cargo, the plane is also capable of serving in maritime surveillance, disaster response missions, special missions, medical evacuations etc. In the troop-ferrying role, it is capable of transporting 70 personnel. Being a medium transport aircraft, it offers flexibility and is capable of ferrying troops and cargo to locations that are inaccessible by larger and heavier aircraft.</p>

<p>“This first flight represents a significant accomplishment for the first Make in India aerospace programme. With the Indian Air Force set to become the largest operator of the C295 in the world, this programme exemplifies our commitment to improving&nbsp;the Indian Air Force (IAF) operational capabilities,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Military Air Systems at Airbus Defence and Space.</p>

<p>India acquired 56 C295 aircraft in September 2021 to replace the Air Force's legacy AVRO fleet. The first plane is expected to be delivered to India by the second half of this year, Airbus said. "This programme will significantly contribute to developing the country’s military-industrial ecosystem from the manufacturing to assembly, testing, to delivery and maintenance of the complete lifecycle of the aircraft" the firm added.</p>

<p>Airbus recently revealed that Indian Air Force pilots had commenced the training for operating C295 aircraft, at the Airbus International Training Centre in Spain. <p>An Amphibious Assault ship of the Indian Navy, INS Magar's primary role has been that of an expeditionary warfare unit, which can carry eleven battle tanks, thirteen BMP infantry fighting vehicles, ten trucks, eight heavy motor vehicles, and more than 200 troops in various configurations.</p>

<p>The ship also carries an integral Seaking Helicopter for airborne operations and four Landing Craft Assault(LCA) for launching amphibious assaults.</p>

<p>Built by GRSE Kolkata, INS Magar was commissioned on 18th July 1987 in the eastern Indian city. The vessel was a major milestone for the Indian shipbuilding industry as it was the first indigenously built ship with more than 5000 gross register tonnage(referring to the ship's internal volume) and the first of the Landing Ship Tank (Large) class.</p>

<h2><strong>'Magar - A cross between a crocodile and fish'</strong></h2>

<p>The Ships crest depicts the Hindu mythological character Makara, riding the waves. The Makara is generally depicted as a half crocodile in the fore part with a tail of a fish. Makara is considered as the ‘Vahana’ (Vehicle) of Goddess Ganga and the sea god Varuna.</p>

<h2><strong>Major Operations undertaken by INS Magar</strong></h2>

<p>Operation Pawan was undertaken in 1987 by Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF) to take control of the Jaffna Peninsula (Sri Lanka) from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE). The ship played a key role in the transfer of army troops and tanks to the Sri Lankan peninsula to provide assistance to the fighting effort of the troops on the ground.</p>

<p>According to the Indian Air Force, the C-17 aircraft departed from the Hindon Air Force Station, near New Delhi, on the intervening night of May 3rd and 4th.&nbsp;The heavy-lifter aircraft made a pit stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where keeping in mind the challenges of refuelling in its conflict-hit destination, Sudan, it tanked up on extra fuel.</p>

<p>This mission was undertaken to repatriate 192 passengers - mostly women, children and elderly individuals, who were either NRIs, foreign nationals or OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India). The military aircraft had to fly from Jeddah to Sudan and then directly back to India in a non-stop flight, as the passengers were not permitted to land in Jeddah.</p>

<p>Given the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the military aircraft performing repatriation flights are landing at their own risk and must undertake necessary measures for their safety. As part of the daring mission, the C-17 aircrew, as per the IAF, "carried out an overhead steep tactical arrival followed by an assault approach to land the heavy jet."&nbsp;</p>

<p>IAF Spokesperson Wing Commander Ashish Moghe explained to WION that the steep landings are performed in order to safeguard from the threats of small-arms fire from the ground.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While flying back from Sudan to India, the C-17 crew faced another unplanned emergency when one of the passengers fell unconscious. However, the crew immediately handled the situation and stabilised the patient by providing him with oxygen. IAF said that the C-17 carrying 192 passengers from Sudan landed at Ahmedabad late Thursday evening and then at the home base of Hindon, later that night. The C-17 Globemaster III flew close to 9600 km as part of this mission, with the aircrew flying extended duty periods of nearly 24 hours.</p>

IAF pulls off 24hr non-stop rescue mission; flies 9600 km to rescue 192 from conflict-stricken Sudan

<p>With vegan leather and sustainable fashion being widely popularised, India, the world's largest producer of the mango fruit has an indigenous solution on offer, 'Mango Leather' (a leather-like material).</p>

<p>This new material came to be, thanks to the quest for a leather-like material made from organic sources and one that can be degraded naturally.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists and researchers from the CSIR-CLRI (Council for Scientific &amp; Industrial Research- Central Leather Research Institute) in Chennai have been testing a wide-range of agricultural products and by-products including rice straw, wheat straw, sugarcane straw, orange peels, banana peels etc.</p>

<p>However, based on the specific requirement of a partner firm, they zeroed in on mangoes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Estimates suggest that a considerable number of mangoes go waste after harvest, as they are not of a standard quality. The pulp from these mangoes is our primary raw material" Dr. Thanikaivelan, Chief Scientist, CSIR-CLRI explained to WION.</p>

<p>The production technique involves adding mango pulp to a naturally derived polymer (in both solid and liquid form) and making sheets out of the resultant material.</p>

<p>The team at CLRI implemented the new&nbsp;manufacturing technique with all major varieties of mangoes - Alphonso, Kesar, Banganapalli etc. and proved that it can be done with mangoes that come in from across India.</p>

<p>While mango-based material can't match the longevity of animal leather, it does offer some advantages over the animal product.</p>

Animal leather requires huge quantities of water and other chemicals for the manufacturing process, whereas it is minimal for the mango-based material," Dr. Thanikaivelan shared.</p>

<p>The new material based on mango pulp is seen as an alternative to synthetic leathers(based on PVC and PU), as it can last at least five years and then gets degraded quickly after disposal. In case of synthetic leather, the degradation process takes decades. Once manufactured, the pulp-based sheets can be processed further with surface coloration, coatings and exotic print designs, to make it more appealing.</p>

<p>CLRI said, Mumbai-based firm Aamti Green Pvt Ltd has purchased the exclusive rights for the patented production technology of mango-based material from CLRI and hopes to soon roll out belts, wallets, bags, jewel boxes. CLRI has also filed patents for the technology to make leather-like material from rice straw, wheat straw and sugarcane straw.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In a textbook launch, the vehicle placed TeLEOS-2 and LUMELITE-4 satellites precisely into their intended 586 km circular orbit," ISRO said. This was the 57th overall flight of the PSLV rocket and was a commercial mission that was facilitated by NewSpace India Limited, ISRO's commercial arm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In his post-launch address, Chairman ISRO, Dr S Somanath said ISRO would soon be conducting the launch of a GSLV rocket (earlier known as GSLV Mk2), a PSLV rocket and the LVM3 rocket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Lot of activity going on at SDSC-SHAR(India's spaceport) towards three major missions that are going to happen in the next few months," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sharing the progress on India's Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission, Dr Somanath said that the crew module (astronaut-carrying capsule) would be carried to an altitude of 12-14 km on board a modified 'L40' liquid-stage booster, which is dubbed test vehicle.</p>

<p>The maiden test vehicle mission is expected to be carried out in June this year and is meant to test the safety systems of the crew module.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Further, the maiden unmanned flight of the human-rated LVM3 rocket is to be carried out in February 2024. ISRO hopes to perform two or three unmanned flights, before the actual human spaceflight mission that involves sending three Indian astronauts to low earth orbit and then bringing them back safely by splashing down the crew module in the ocean.</p>

<p>India is developing all related technologies indigenously for fulfilling this mission, which is the country's most ambitious and expensive spacefaring venture so far.&nbsp;</p>

Once deployed and operational, it will be used to support the all-weather, day and night, satellite imagery requirements of various agencies within the Government of Singapore. TeLEOS-2 carries a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload.</p>

<p>The secondary passenger is LUMELITE-4, a 16-kg satellite developed by Singaporean academia. LUMELITE-4 is developed for the technological demonstration of the High-Performance Space-borne VHF Data Exchange System (VDES). It aims to augment Singapore’s e-navigation maritime safety and benefit the global shipping community.</p>

<p>In addition to the two primary satellites, there are seven non-separating payloads that are on-board the PSLV rocket. These experiments would be housed within the fourth&nbsp;and final stage of the rocket.&nbsp;According to ISRO,&nbsp;PSLV-C55 mission will carry out in-orbit scientific experiments by using the spent PS4 stage as an orbital platform. This is the third time that PS4 will be used after satellite separations as a platform for experiments.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>There is an entire branch of space science known as 'Orbital Mechanics' that is used to determine what is known as a 'Launch window', a period of time within which a certain launch must happen. Launch windows depend on a plethora of factors - place of launch, type of orbit intended, final destination, whether the satellite is headed for another planet, number of satellites being carried, the time of the year, position of the relevant heavenly bodies and also minimal risk of space debris.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We know that&nbsp;Low Earth orbit is getting increasingly populated with constellations of communication satellites from various firms, and also pre-existing satellites, space debris and much more. Under such circumstances, space agencies look at the safest time of flight, when there is nil risk of collission or proximate approaches with space debris. Even, millimetre-sized debris can pose a major threat to space assets, as the debris in Low Earth orbit circles the earth at speeds close to 27,000kmph. A collission at such speeds could have unimaginable impacts.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>How ISRO monitors space debris, safeguards space assets?</strong></h2>

<p>The Indian Space agency has a facility aimed at performing what in simple terms can be explained as a holistic 'Traffic Management in Space' and to ensure the sustainable use of space. Known as the&nbsp;'ISRO System for Safe &amp; Sustainable Operations Management' (IS4OM), the new facility based in Bengaluru will perform a host of functions - safeguarding India's space assets, protecting them from space debris, predicting the orbital movement of debris, predicting likely collisions and coordinating with global agencies for all of the above.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is not about (space)traffic management alone, it is about keeping orbits available to everyone, operating in space without causing problems to one another and ensuring sustainable use" explained ISRO Chairman, Dr&nbsp;S. Somanath had earlier told WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Elaborating on the different functions of 'IS40M', Dr&nbsp;Somanath said, "Firstly it is about using radars and optical observation to watch and tag objects in space, then we will have to&nbsp;consider the effect of earth's gravitational pull, impact of sun and moon etc. and&nbsp;predict the movement of the said object/debris. Based on this, we will have to look for possibilities of collisions. This entire process has to be carried out on a daily basis. In case an object poses a threat to our satellite, we must accordingly move our satellite out of harm's way and also inform foreign agencies(whose satellites are in the vicinity) about our collision avoidance maneuver."</p>

<p>In addition to this, the objects that are likely to fall back onto earth), asteroids that are on collision course with earth will also have to be tracked. These are complex calculations and are error-prone, owing to the large number of factors involved, thus necessitating various corrections.&nbsp;Dr&nbsp;Somanath added that these mathematical models used to calculate and project the path of debris and their impact etc. are indigenously developed and even if a country wanted, such models are not available for purchase in the International market.</p>

<p>On India's capabilities, he had explained that India has radars that are&nbsp;meant to observe satellites and the Indian space agency is also installing optical tracking facilities. However, the Indian space agency&nbsp;does not have all facilities required to track objects of 10cm size and for this it relies on data provided by foreign agencies.&nbsp;</p>

Apple CEO Tim Cook formally inaugurated these stores, which are situated in the world's second-largest smartphone market. Reports suggest that seven per cent&nbsp;of Apple phones sold worldwide are assembled in India. <p>Assembling and integrating a launch vehicle is a tedious and time-consuming process that requires&nbsp; significant manpower. Depending on the size of the rocket, the integration procedure could take anywhere between a week to three months.</p>

<p>For instance, ISRO's newest rocket SSLV (Small Satellite Launch Vehicle) is designed for quick assembly and integration, it can be done within a week. <p>For the latest launch, WION has learnt that ISRO operationalized a new PSLV Integration Facility(PIF), where the first and second stage of the four-stage PSLV rocket can be integrated and kept ready. This means that half the rocket is ready, even before it can be taken to the launchpad.</p>

<p>Therefore, only the third and fourth stage and satellites have to be integrated at the launchpad and it would significantly reduce the time period that the launchpad is occupied. Owing to the PIF, PSLV first and second stages can be kept ready and as and when required, ISRO would be able to increase the frequency of launch of&nbsp; its smaller vehicles like SSLV and PSLV.&nbsp;</p>

This is a process where the chopper carries an underslung bucket and dunks it in a waterbody(preferably closest to the fire site) and then dispenses the water over the blaze.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The IAF chopper had dispensed over 22,000 litres of water and had ensured that the fire was extinguished in two major zones and finally restricted to a limited patch. On Monday and Tuesday, additional ground teams were tasked by the Forest department to carry out the efforts on the ground. Efforts were carried out during the day and night to ensure that the blaze is brought under control.&nbsp;</p>

Thanks to Air Force and forest dept, forest blaze put out after week-long efforts; 200 hectares lost

<p>In order to bolster coastal security, the Indian Coast Guard is conducting exercise 'Sagar Kavach' along the 590 km coast of Kerala and Mahe in Southern India. Being carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday, the exercise involves civil and defence entities.</p>

<p>Conducted and coordinated by the Coast Guard, the exercise has the active participation of the Indian Navy, Coastal Police, Intelligence Bureau, Customs, Department of Ports, and Department of Fisheries amongst others.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As part of the exercise, participating units are divided into two teams - Red and Blue. The Red team is required to make attempts to infiltrate into the coastal areas from the seas, whereas the Blue team is meant to maintain coastal surveillance, intercept, and neutralise the infiltration attempts. The exercise is meant to ensure greater coordination and understanding between the central and state forces.&nbsp;</p>

Being carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday, the exercise involves civil and defence entities. Conducted and coordinated by the Coast Guard, the exercise has the active participation of the Indian Navy, Coastal Police, Intelligence Bureau, Customs, Department of Ports, and Department of Fisheries amongst others. As part of the exercise, participating units are divided into two teams - Red and Blue. The Red team is required to make attempts to infiltrate into the coastal areas from the seas, whereas the Blue team is meant to maintain coastal surveillance, intercept, and neutralise the infiltration attempts. The exercise is meant to ensure greater coordination and understanding between the central and state forces.
