<p>In a big boost to the Olympic sport in India, the country is gearing up to host its first-ever World Surf League (WSL) event at the UNESCO Heritage Town of Mamallapuram (around 50kms from&nbsp;the capital city Chennai) in Tamil Nadu. Arun Vasu, President&nbsp;of the Surfing Federation of India, told WION that the&nbsp;surfing competition which is scheduled between 14th-20th August is expected to attract almost 100 surfers from across 14 nations and a dozen surfers from across India. The upcoming event is titled 'International Surf Open - Tamil Nadu' and is expected to expose foreign surfers to the sport in Indian waters, popularise the niche sport in India and offer a huge platform for the country's emerging surfing talent.</p>

<p>Recalling how the surfing culture began in Tamil Nadu, Vasu said that it was initiated a decade ago as a social project to empower the fisherfolk and their families, who lived along Kovalam and Mamallapuram, near Chennai.</p>

<p>"Today, Tamil Nadu is the leading state in surfing and the highest number of India's national surfing champions are from here. The most number of surfing schools are also here. Kerala, Karnataka and Goa are also actively contributing to surfing," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tamil Nadu's Sports &amp; Youth Welfare Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said that the State Government has sanctioned INR 2.67 crore&nbsp;or approximately $300,000&nbsp;for the event, which will be the first-of-its-kind in India. "19 of the 20 top surfers in India are from Tamil Nadu," he said. He added that this will be the second International sporting event to be hosted in the iconic seaside town, after the FIDE International Chess Olympiad in 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The World Surf League is the governing body for professional surfers and their WSL Championship Tour is the premier surfing event for top talent. Simply put, the WSL Championship Tour is similar to the ATP/WTA tour in tennis. Queried about the Mamallapuram event, Vasu, who also heads the Tamil Nadu Surfing Association, told WION that it would be a 'QS 3000' (qualifying series) event. He explained that there are four QS events '1000, 3000, 5000 and 10000', each of which provides a higher level of competition than its predecessor. Even the surfers who are ineligible for the Championship Tour can compete in the QS events and earn points towards taking part in the following year's Championship Tour.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the run-up to the WSL QS3000 event in Mamallapuram, the Surfing Federation of India will be hosting a series of surfing events in India, thereby providing wildcard entries to the QS3000 event for the top 10 Indian surfers. Similar QS3000 qualifying events are also to be held in venues in the US, Japan, and Portugal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Govt of Tamil Nadu, the 200-member ground team carried out firefighting efforts through Sunday night and managed to restrict it to a limited patch. This comes a day after the Indian Air Force deployed its Russian-origin Mi-17 multi-role helicopter to aid the firefighting efforts.&nbsp;</p>

This bucket is said to be capable of holding more than 3,000 litres of water and the IAF chopper dispensed more than 22,000 litres of water on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>IAF's efforts led to the dousing in flames in two major fire zones and additional ground teams are being deployed to relieve the teams that worked through the night.&nbsp;</p>

Tamil Nadu: IAF chopper, forest department get closer to dousing forest fire

<p dir="ltr">WION has learnt that the Indian Government's Department of Space is facilitating the technology transfer of Russian-origin 'RD-191' semi-cryogenic rocket engines to Indian industry. This technology transfer is meant to enable Indian industries to manufacture the Russian-origin rocket engine in India.</p>

<p dir="ltr">This also opens up the possibility of exporting the made-in-India 'RD-191' engines and using the engine as part of India's heaviest rocket LVM3, thereby enhancing its payload carrying capability. India and Russia are learnt to have been in talks for a long time, regarding the sale of the 'RD-191' engines.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">The 'RD-191' is a high-performance rocket engine fuelled by kerosene and liquid oxygen. It falls under the category semi-cryogenic, as its fuel kerosene can be stored at room temperature and the oxidiser liquid oxygen has to be stored at super-cooled temperatures (below -150 degrees Centigrade).</p>

<p dir="ltr">India currently operates three kinds of engines on its operational rockets — solid-fuelled, liquid-fuelled and cryogenic (where liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are stored at super-cooled temperatures).</p>

<p dir="ltr">In a recent interview with the Russian News Agency Interfax, Andrey Elchaninov, First Deputy Director General of Russian Space Agency Roscosmos, was asked about the possibility of supplying India with RD-191 engines.</p>

<p dir="ltr">He had said that India and Russia were discussing the details, characteristics and scope of deliveries of the RD-191 engines. "We hope to enter into a contract in the near future. We do not interrupt cooperation with anyone, we are open to all foreign customers" he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">As the discussions are underway for the Russian-origin semi-cryogenic engine, the Indian Space agency ISRO is also gearing up for the maiden test of its indigenously-developed semi-cryogenic engine, a 2000kN engine powered by kerosene and liquid oxygen.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Dubbed as SCE-2000' the semi-cryo engine is being developed by ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. While the engine is a standalone component, it is eventually integrated with fuel tanks and additional components, thereby completing what is known as a rocket stage. ISRO calls its semi-cryo stage 'SC-120'. For this engine, ISRO has developed a kerosene-based fuel that they call 'ISROSENE'.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">In its latest annual report, ISRO had said that "the development of seven out of eight engine subsystems, have been completed. The intermediate configuration of the engine (Power Head Test Article) has been realised, wherein all the subsystems have been manufactured through Indian industries.</p>

<p dir="ltr">One ISROSENE propellant tank and two sets of LOX propellant tanks for the semi-cryogenic stage have been realised through industry, which has successfully undergone proof pressure tests. "We are getting ready for the first-ever test of the SCE-200". Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, told WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are the most efficient cryogenic fuel combinations, storing liquid hydrogen in tanks is an extremely complicated and challenging engineering feat. Liquid hydrogen is explosive in nature and expensive to produce.</p>

<p>Rocket-grade kerosene is simpler to handle as it can be stored at room temperature and owing to its high-density, large quantities can be stored in moderate-sized tanks. The low-density of liquid hydrogen means that large tanks are required to store even a small quantity of it, thereby increasing the size and mass of the rocket stage.</p>

This also opens up the possibility of exporting the made-in-India 'RD-191' engines and using the engine as part of India's heaviest rocket LVM3, thereby enhancing its payload carrying capability. India and Russia are learnt to have been in talks for a long time, regarding the sale of the 'RD-191' engines. The 'RD-191' is a high-performance rocket engine fuelled by kerosene and liquid oxygen. It falls under the category semi-cryogenic, as its fuel kerosene can be stored at room temperature and the oxidiser liquid oxygen has to be stored at super-cooled temperatures (below -150 degrees Centigrade). India currently operates three kinds of engines on its operational rockets — solid-fuelled, liquid-fuelled and cryogenic (where liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are stored at super-cooled temperatures). In a recent interview with the Russian News Agency Interfax, Andrey Elchaninov, First Deputy Director General of Russian Space Agency Roscosmos, was asked about the possibility of supplying India with RD-191 engines. He had said that India and Russia were discussing the details, characteristics and scope of deliveries of the RD-191 engines. "We hope to enter into a contract in the near future. We do not interrupt cooperation with anyone, we are open to all foreign customers" he said. As the discussions are underway for the Russian-origin semi-cryogenic engine, the Indian Space agency ISRO is also gearing up for the maiden test of its indigenously-developed semi-cryogenic engine, a 2000kN engine powered by kerosene and liquid oxygen. Dubbed as SCE-2000' the semi-cryo engine is being developed by ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. While the engine is a standalone component, it is eventually integrated with fuel tanks and additional components, thereby completing what is known as a rocket stage. ISRO calls its semi-cryo stage 'SC-120'. For this engine, ISRO has developed a kerosene-based fuel that they call 'ISROSENE'. In its latest annual report, ISRO had said that "the development of seven out of eight engine subsystems, have been completed. The intermediate configuration of the engine (Power Head Test Article) has been realised, wherein all the subsystems have been manufactured through Indian industries. One ISROSENE propellant tank and two sets of LOX propellant tanks for the semi-cryogenic stage have been realised through industry, which has successfully undergone proof pressure tests. "We are getting ready for the first-ever test of the SCE-200". Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, told WION. While liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen are the most efficient cryogenic fuel combinations, storing liquid hydrogen in tanks is an extremely complicated and challenging engineering feat. Liquid hydrogen is explosive in nature and expensive to produce. Rocket-grade kerosene is simpler to handle as it can be stored at room temperature and owing to its high-density, large quantities can be stored in moderate-sized tanks. With the aim of alerting fellow users, P Aravindhan, Zonal Director of Narcotics Control Bureau, Chennai Zone, shared his experience on social media.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the officer's social media post, he had recently placed an order on the Indian E-commerce website 'Nykaa' and the products had even been delivered. However, a short while after his order had been delivered on Monday 10th April, he received a call from someone claiming to be from Nykaa Customer care.&nbsp;</p>

The caller asked me to select all the products and add them to cart. They even had my exact name, mobile number, delivery address and said that the products and the gift would be delivered there.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sensing that this was a malicious call, the officer didn't proceed further and make any payment. He highlighted the issue on social media and mentioned that he is facing this issue for the second time, suspecting that the data leak could have happened from Nykaa or the delivery partner 'Delhivery'. He also raised questions on how the scammers got access to his personal data that was shared with Nykaa and how the scammers managed to call him immediately after the order delivery is fulfilled.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He told WION that he had raised the issue further with Nykaa and provided them with the relevant details for probing the matter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cryogenic engines are powered by super-cooled fuels, that are stored at temperatures below -150 degrees centigrade. The most common cryogenic fuel combination is liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. However, Skyroot's latest engine known as 'Dhawan-II' is powered by Liquified Natural Gas(comprising more than 90%methane) and Liquid oxygen.</p>

<p>The engine has been named so, as a tribute to Prof. Satish Dhawan, an pioneer who made great contributions to India's space programme.</p>

<p>Queried about the rationale behind going for a Methane-Liquid oxygen fuel combination, Pawan explained to WION that using alternative cryogenic or semi-cryogenic fuels such as liquid hydrogen or kerosene had certain limitations. "Liquid hydrogen is a very complex fuel to store and handle.</p>

<p>It is also highly explosive in nature and it is expensive as well. Kerosene is not a clean burning fuel like methane and leaves behind carbon soot deposits" he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In November 2022, Skyroot had launched 'Vikram-S', an upper-atmospheric research rocket. However, this doesn't qualify as a spacefaring rocket. It is to develop their own spacefaring rockets that the firm has been developing and testing engines such as 'Dhawan-II'.</p>

<p>The firm is developing two spacefaring rockets Vikram-1 and Vikram-2, both of which are four-stage rockets, with three solid-fuel stages and a liquid-fuelled upper stage. While Vikram-1 uses earth-storable fuels in its upper stage, Vikram-2 will be using a cryogenic upper stage, thus helping it carry more payloads to space.&nbsp;</p>

Indian firm test fires 3-D printed cryogenic engine; spacefaring rocket launch by 2023 end

<p dir="ltr">Spaceplanes are highly sophisticated aerospace vehicles - while within the earth's atmosphere, they can glide and land on an airstrip like a plane and while in space, they can manoeuvre like a spacecraft. The most common spaceplanes are the 1980s-era American-origin Space Shuttle and the Soviet-origin Buran. But neither of these giant astronaut-ferrying spaceplanes are in operation. In 2023, only the US and China are known to operate autonomous and reusable spaceplanes. India could soon be the third entrant into this exclusive club, thanks to its indigenous spaceplane known as 'Reusable Launch Vehicle - Technology Demonstrator' (RLV-TD). This prototype has been developed by the Indian space agency ISRO and its testing is being carried out with the support of Indian Defence lab DRDO and the Indian Air Force.</p>

<p>America has been operating the 'Boeing X-37B' spaceplane for nearly a decade and the plane has proven its ability to remain in space for more than 900days, in a single trip. As per reports, China is widely regarded to operate its own spaceplane, but details are very sketchy. Given that spaceplanes have both civil and military applications, it is certain that no country would ever reveal the real intent and nature of operations being carried out by these autonomous aerospace vehicles.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 dir="ltr"><strong>How do Spaceplanes reach Earth orbit and return ?</strong></h2>

<p dir="ltr">Spaceplanes are not standalone vehicles, they ride piggyback on a large rocket during their onward journey . It is the rocket which actually carries the spaceplane to an orbit around the earth. Once in earth orbit, the spaceplane is on its own. It performs its mission and then de-orbits(manoeuvres to re-enter the earth) and gets drawn by earth's gravitational pull and re-enters the earth's atmosphere, where it encounters temperatures close to 2000degrees Celsius. As the plane descends into the denser layers of the earth's atmosphere, it uses its control surfaces (rudder, aileron, elevator) to glide and make a runway landing.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 dir="ltr"><strong>How far has India come ? What is India's reusable vehicle like ?</strong></h2>

<p dir="ltr">On April 2,&nbsp;2023, the Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) demonstrated the precise runway landing of an unmanned, fully autonomous, indigenous space plane. The space plane was dropped mid-air from an altitude of 4.5 kms, by an Indian Air Force 'Chinook' tandem-rotor helicopter. After being dropped, the space plane glided down and covered a distance of nearly 4.6kms, while performing autonomous navigation, guidance and control calculations. Finally, the plane manoeuvred deftly and landed precisely on a runway at a high-speeds of 350kmph. Top ISRO officials leading the project had told WION that the plane landed just as planned, perfectly along the runway centreline. The landing was so perfect that the spaceplane is said&nbsp;to be in impeccable condition, at the Aeronautical Test Range tarmac in Chitradurga, Karnataka.</p>

<p><b id="docs-internal-guid-a00feaf4-7fff-7695-a152-df232b39ad50">I</b>n a first in the world, a winged body has been carried to an altitude of 4.5 kms by a helicopter and released for carrying out an autonomous landing on a runway. RLV is essentially a space plane with a low lift-to-drag-ratio requiring an approach at high glide angles that necessitated a landing at high velocities of 350 kmph" said the Indian Space agency, ISRO. The Indian spaceplane prototype weighs 1.6tons(similar to that of a SUV), and&nbsp;measures 6.5meters in length and 3.6meters in breadth. The idea for ISRO's spaceplane was born nearly two decades ago and development work has been going on for more than ten years. The recent unmanned landing is a validation of how far ISRO has come in mastering sophisticated autonomous technologies and the avionics, computing systems that make it possible.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Explaining the progress of 'RLV-TD' testing to WION, ISRO, VSSC Director, Dr&nbsp;S. Unnikrishnan Nair said that the same RLV-TD vehicle had earlier(in 2016) successfully been carried to 65kms altitude by a rocket. From there, the vehicle re-entered the denser parts of the atmospshere at Hypersonic speeds, almost five times the speed of sound (hypersonic speed or Mach5) and finally made a splashdown landing in the Bay of Bengal(simulated runway). However, the ocean landing was a preliminary step and the precise runway landing is a really sophisticated and technologically complex feat that takes forward the progress of making the spaceplane a reality, he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2 dir="ltr"><b id="docs-internal-guid-348a7e35-7fff-cd81-da1e-a7a9eb2dddfe">What's next for 'RLV-TD' ?&nbsp;</b></h2>

<p dir="ltr">So far, the RLV has shown that it can be flown to the upper atmopshere on a rocket and can come back and make a precise, autonomous runway landing. What remains to be done is, for the RLV to reach space(on a rocket), orbit the earth, carry out experiments, de-orbit, re-enter the earth's atmopshere.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">ISRO Chairman, Dr&nbsp;S. Somanath said that the RLV-TD is a great opportunity for India to develop an 'ORV'(orbital landing experiment) and that this work was already progressing. 'ORV' is an experiment where the space plane is flown to space atop a rocket and then brought back to land on a runway, completely autonomously. "This RLV landing is taking us closer to developing a reusable rocket/landing craft for very specific mission goals" he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">Dr&nbsp;Unnikrishnan Nair told WION that the present 'RLV-TD' vehicle was meant for demonstration purpose and the actual vehicle would be about 1.6times larger in size. The actual RLV plane is meant to be launched to space atop a modified-GSLV&nbsp;rocket, he said. It is envisioned that the spaceplane would be able to sustain in orbit for almost a month, he added.</p>

<p dir="ltr">On the recent test and the homegrown systems for the same, ISRO said "The runway landing experiment (LEX) utilised several indigenous systems. Localized Navigation systems based on pseudolite systems, instrumentation, and sensor systems, etc. were developed by ISRO. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the landing site with a Ka-band Radar Altimeter provided accurate altitude information". The RLV LEX demanded several state-of-the-art technologies including accurate Navigation hardware and software, Pseudolite system, Ka-band Radar Altimeter, NavIC receiver, indigenous Landing Gear, Aerofoil honey-comb fins and brake parachute system, the Indian space agency added.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr"><b id="docs-internal-guid-a8ba8c31-7fff-c78b-f173-9a032ec064ca">Advantages of Autonomous Reusable spaceplanes&nbsp;</b></h2>

<p dir="ltr">The Space shuttle was a reusable space plane, but it cost a huge deal of money to operate. The main role of the space shuttle was to ferry cargo and astronauts to the International space station and bring them back. The shuttle also performed a variety of roles such as placing satellites in orbit, constructing and servicing the International Space station, carrying out space science experiments etc. While the shuttle did render great service to international space missions and transported cargo and astronauts to low earth orbit, it was prohibitively expensive as the per flight cost is estimated at $1.6bn. The shuttle's ferrying role has been replaced by SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets and Crew dragon capsules.</p>

<p dir="ltr">It must also be noted that there were two catastrophic disasters involving the shuttle, which led to the loss of 14 crew members in total and billions of dollars worth of equipment. When it comes to unmanned and autonomous solutions, the cost is much lower and so are risks. In 2023, only the US and China are known to operate autonomous and reusable spaceplanes. India could soon be the third entrant into this exclusive club, thanks to its indigenous spaceplane known as 'Reusable Launch Vehicle - Technology Demonstrator' (RLV-TD). Given that spaceplanes have both civil and military applications, it is certain that no country would ever reveal the real intent and nature of operations being carried out by these autonomous aerospace vehicles. How do Spaceplanes reach Earth orbit and return ? Spaceplanes are not standalone vehicles, they ride piggyback on a large rocket during their onward journey . It is the rocket which actually carries the spaceplane to an orbit around the earth. Once in earth orbit, the spaceplane is on its own. It performs its mission and then de-orbits(manoeuvres to re-enter the earth) and gets drawn by earth's gravitational pull and re-enters the earth's atmosphere, where it encounters temperatures close to 2000degrees Celsius. As the plane descends into the denser layers of the earth's atmosphere, it uses its control surfaces (rudder, aileron, elevator) to glide and make a runway landing. How far has India come ? What is India's reusable vehicle like ? On April 2, 2023, the Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) demonstrated the precise runway landing of an unmanned, fully autonomous, indigenous space plane. The space plane was dropped mid-air from an altitude of 4.5 kms, by an Indian Air Force 'Chinook' tandem-rotor helicopter. After being dropped, the space plane glided down and covered a distance of nearly 4.6kms, while performing autonomous navigation, guidance and control calculations. Finally, the plane manoeuvred deftly and landed precisely on a runway at a high-speeds of 350kmph. However, the ocean landing was a preliminary step and the precise runway landing is a really sophisticated and technologically complex feat that takes forward the progress of making the spaceplane a reality, he added. What's next for 'RLV-TD' ? So far, the RLV has shown that it can be flown to the upper atmopshere on a rocket and can come back and make a precise, autonomous runway landing. What remains to be done is, for the RLV to reach space(on a rocket), orbit the earth, carry out experiments, de-orbit, re-enter the earth's atmopshere. ISRO Chairman, Dr S. Somanath said that the RLV-TD is a great opportunity for India to develop an 'ORV'(orbital landing experiment) and that this work was already progressing. 'ORV' is an experiment where the space plane is flown to space atop a rocket and then brought back to land on a runway, completely autonomously. "This RLV landing is taking us closer to developing a reusable rocket/landing craft for very specific mission goals" he said. Dr Unnikrishnan Nair told WION that the present 'RLV-TD' vehicle was meant for demonstration purpose and the actual vehicle would be about 1.6times larger in size. The actual RLV plane is meant to be launched to space atop a modified-GSLV rocket, he said. It is envisioned that the spaceplane would be able to sustain in orbit for almost a month, he added. On the recent test and the homegrown systems for the same, ISRO said "The runway landing experiment (LEX) utilised several indigenous systems. Localized Navigation systems based on pseudolite systems, instrumentation, and sensor systems, etc. were developed by ISRO. The RLV LEX demanded several state-of-the-art technologies including accurate Navigation hardware and software, Pseudolite system, Ka-band Radar Altimeter, NavIC receiver, indigenous Landing Gear, Aerofoil honey-comb fins and brake parachute system, the Indian space agency added. Advantages of Autonomous Reusable spaceplanes The Space shuttle was a reusable space plane, but it cost a huge deal of money to operate. The main role of the space shuttle was to ferry cargo and astronauts to the International space station and bring them back. The shuttle also performed a variety of roles such as placing satellites in orbit, constructing and servicing the International Space station, carrying out space science experiments etc. While the shuttle did render great service to international space missions and transported cargo and astronauts to low earth orbit, it was prohibitively expensive as the per flight cost is estimated at $1.6bn. The shuttle's ferrying role has been replaced by SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets and Crew dragon capsules. It must also be noted that there were two catastrophic disasters involving the shuttle, which led to the loss of 14 crew members in total and billions of dollars worth of equipment. When it comes to unmanned and autonomous solutions, the cost is much lower and so are risks. EXCLUSIVE: India lands unmanned spaceplane with pin-point accuracy; next destination is space

<p>India announced a deal with Brahmos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL), an Indo-Russian joint venture firm, to procure Next Generation Brahmos Maritime Mobile Coastal Batteries Long Range (NGMMCB LR) and Brahmos missiles. The deal has been finalised&nbsp;at a cost of over ₹1700 Crore&nbsp;or nearly $212 million.</p>

<p>These sea-shore based systems will be equipped with the Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles and are aimed to significantly enhance the multi-directional maritime strike capability of India's naval forces.</p>

<p>This project is poised to generate employment opportunities for more than 90,000 human-days over a period of four years.</p>

<p>Notably, a majority of the equipment and sub-systems for this order will be sourced from Indian industries and indigenous manufacturers. The delivery of these systems is expected to commence from 2027, an official statement said.</p>

<p>Atul Dinkar Rane, CEO and MD, Brahmos Aerospace had recently told WION that the Brahmos missile is now <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/brahmos-missile-is-now-78-indigenous-brahmos-aerospace-ceo-to-wion-575080">78 per cent&nbsp;indigenous</a>, a giant leap from the initial years (2004), when the missile was barely 13 per cent indigenous. After Brahmos Aerospace bagged a $375 million agreement with Philippines, the firm is now in serious talks with South East Asian and West Asian countries, Rane had said.</p>

The deal has been finalised at a cost of over ₹1700 Crore or nearly $212 million. These sea-shore based systems will be equipped with the Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles and are aimed to significantly enhance the multi-directional maritime strike capability of India's naval forces. This project is poised to generate employment opportunities for more than 90,000 human-days over a period of four years. Notably, a majority of the equipment and sub-systems for this order will be sourced from Indian industries and indigenous manufacturers. The delivery of these systems is expected to commence from 2027, an official statement said. Atul Dinkar Rane, CEO and MD, Brahmos Aerospace had recently told WION that the Brahmos missile is now 78 per cent indigenous, a giant leap from the initial years (2004), when the missile was barely 13 per cent indigenous. Indian Navy to get next-gen Brahmos missiles from 2027; $212 million deal inked

<p>Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India's partially state-owned defence and aerospace firm, said that it registered around&nbsp;₹26,000 crore or&nbsp;$3.2 billion in revenue&nbsp;during the&nbsp;financial year 2022-23. This is a growth of 8 per cent from the previous year, during which the firm recorded ₹24,620 crore.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Despite the challenges of supply chain disruptions due to geo-political situations, the company could achieve the targeted growth in the top line. This was possible with the increased thrust on indigenisation and with the available inventory," said&nbsp;C.B. Ananthakrishnan, Chief Managing Director, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.</p>

<p>He added that the company's order book stood at around ₹82,000 crore or $8 billion at the end of March 2023, after liquidation of the supplies during 2022-23.</p>

<p>During 2022-23, fresh contracts of around ₹26,000 crores were received which includes manufacturing contracts for 70 HTT-40 trainer aircraft for the Indian Air Force, 6 Do-228 Maritime Patrol Aircraft and PSLV spacefaring rockets for ISRO. In addition, on the ROH front, fresh order to the tune of ₹16,600 crore&nbsp;or $2 billion was received during the year.</p>
