In simple terms, the checkout equipment is a sophisticated machine that can perform in-depth diagnostics on the working of all crucial electrical and electronic sub-systems on-board the missile. Once a missile completes a successful checkout, it is declared operational for use in the frontlines.&nbsp;</p>

Annually, the Indian armed forces perform a complete health-check of the BrahMos missile, to ensure it is in perfect condition" he explained. <p dir="ltr">Queried about the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war on the Indo-Russian BrahMos supply chain, Rane said that the ongoing Geopolitical situation brings in trouble for any supply chain and the pandemic had also done so. However, he added that these were just small speed breakers and roadblocks and that the Brahmos supply chain is robust. "We have a wonderful order book till 2027....With a few new orders coming we have an order book filled till 2031" he added.</p>

<p dir="ltr">With hypersonic missiles being the buzzword, WION asked if BrahMos Aerospace was also working on that front. Rane said that a few nations were working on hypersonic missiles and that the systems are being tested. On the scenario in India, he said that the India's Government-run defence research lab DRDO and their Russian counterparts are working on developing the related technology. "Once the technology is available, BrahMos will be using it to create a hypersonic missile, we are waiting for that technology to be ready" he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Data Patterns said they had designed and built the Checkout Equipment based on the requirements and support of India's Government-run defence research lab DRDO and BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited. "Indigenous development of the Checkout Equipment by Data Patterns has resulted in a direct cost savings of about 75% in foreign exchange for BrahMos Aerospace," said Srinivasagopalan Rangarajan, Chairman &amp; MD, Data Patterns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rane said that the Checkout system developed by Data Patterns has been deployed by the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force at multiple locations across the country. "Normally, during the development of a missile, we perform a launch and test it. In the case of a Checkout, it is like a virtual launch, where major internal components are put to test. This is a complex piece of equipment, as it has to evolve along with the missile and the modifications it undergoes."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have been making improvements on the missile system, the Armed forces always ask for it. We've been improving the system in terms of its performance" CEO, BrahMos told WION, when queried about the reported range upgrades of up to 400km (from 290km) in recent years.<br />

"Now, the whole missile is almost indigenous, sans the Ramjet engine which is of Russian origin. We are now making efforts to even get that technology into the country, maybe 6-8 years down the line," he added.&nbsp;</p>

‘BrahMos missile now 78% indigenous’: BrahMos Aerospace CEO to WION

<p>India's largest rocket LVM3 is at the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, getting ready for the lift-off at 9 am on&nbsp;Sunday, March 26. The launch will mark the sixth flight of the LVM3 rocket. However, there's one thing that makes this LVM3 M3 vehicle different from all the LVM3 rockets that flew before it — this rocket has a changed colour scheme at the cryogenic stage, the upper central portion of the rocket (that towers above the two boosters on the side). Instead of the standard grey/black, this time around the C25 cryogenic stage sports white.</p>

<p>To understand the reason and the science behind the colour change, WION spoke to Dr S. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSCC), ISRO. Dr Nair heads VSSC, which is ISRO's lead facility for developing its operational rockets and future space transportation systems.<br />

A rocket specialist with significant contributions towards launch vehicles and manned vehicle systems, Dr Nair explained that the reason&nbsp;behind the colour change takes into account environmental-friendly manufacturing processes, better insulation properties and the use of lightweight materials.</p>

<p>The C25 stage is a cryogenic stage, which comprises a cryogenic engine and fuel tanks that hold tons of frozen fuel — liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen, along with its related systems. Engineering a cryogenic stage has unique design challenges, as liquid Hydrogen is stored at -253 degree&nbsp;centigrade and liquid Oxygen at -195 degree centigrade. To store these cryogenic fluids and maintain them at supercooled temperatures, special multi-layer insulation is provided for the fuel tanks and other structures.</p>

<p>For the first five launches of the LVM3 rocket, ISRO had been using a grey/black insulation material for the C25 stage and now that material has been replaced with a white coloured one.</p>

<p>"The earlier insulation material was based on Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) and owing to environmental concerns, we have switched to greener alternatives based on chemicals such as Hydrofluoro-Olefine," said Nair.</p>

<p>HCFCs are globally regarded as unsafe as they contain chlorine and have the potential to deplete the ozone layer. Owing to this, there are certain manufacturing caps on this material and ISRO is avoiding its use.</p>

<p>Regarding the grey/black colour being replaced with white, he added that the earlier anti-static coating (meant to prevent a build-up of static electricity) has been replaced with a white one. He reasoned that this was owing to solar absorptivity, as dark colours like black attract a lot of heat and affect the temperature of the cryogenic fuels.</p>

<p>Simply put, the use of white is similar to how cricketers wear all-whites for test matches when they have to play all day. White is meant to reflect the sun's heat away, particularly when the fully-built rocket stands exposed to the sun for several days at the launchpad.</p>

<p>Nair also explained that it is not easy to add an extra coat of paint or extra layer of material to a rocket's upper body, as every kilogramme of weight comes at a premium.</p>

<p>Every added component or layer of coating/paint adds to the rocket's weight and affects the vehicle's payload-carrying capacity. So, we have to keep in mind the science, the utility and also the environmental aspects. Hence, it takes time to develop new materials that are lightweight, suited for the purpose and at the same time cost-effective and environment-friendly.</p>

ISRO's C25 cryogenic stage now sports white, ditches black; What's the science behind it?

<p>Hawking Defence Services(HDS), an Indian defence and aerospace firm inked a procurement cum partnership agreement with Australia-based Amphibian Aerospace Industries (AAI), the manufacturers of the 'Albatross' amphibious aircraft.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 'Albatross' is a 28- seater Amphibious Aircraft capable of landing and taking off from land, water, and snow. The agreement includes the confirmation of procurement of a single aircraft by Hawking Defence Services.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 'Albatross' twin-engine seaplane was originally used by the US Navy and Coast Guard for maritime search and rescue operations in the 1960s. The new variant of this aircraft with modern engines and avionics is designated as 'G-111T Albatross' and is manufactured in Australia's Northern territory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have plans to establish a unit in Tamil Nadu to manufacture aircraft components and MRO services for the Amphibious Aircraft. We are looking at an investment of approximately Rs. 1,000 crores in the next five years. Our aviation arm is expected to create around 850 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs too,” said Mr Vijayanarayanan Rapalli, Chairman, of Hawking Defence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The MoU signing between the Indian and Australian companies was in the presence of Mr David Eggleston, Deputy Consul General, Australia, Mr Adil Mohamed, Project Director- Australia India Business Exchange and officials from both companies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>AAI was established as the manufacturing and product development arm of the Australian-owned Amphibian Aircraft group of companies. The Northern Territory Government, of Australia is also a shareholder in AAI. AAI is the holder of the US Federal Aviation Administration "Type Certificate" for the HU-16 and G-111 Albatross amphibious aircraft.&nbsp;</p>

The agreement includes the confirmation of procurement of a single aircraft by Hawking Defence Services. The 'Albatross' twin-engine seaplane was originally used by the US Navy and Coast Guard for maritime search and rescue operations in the 1960s. The new variant of this aircraft with modern engines and avionics is designated as 'G-111T Albatross' and is manufactured in Australia's Northern territory. "We have plans to establish a unit in Tamil Nadu to manufacture aircraft components and MRO services for the Amphibious Aircraft. We are looking at an investment of approximately Rs. 1,000 crores in the next five years. <p>The Indian space agency has announced that its largest rocket LVM3 will be launched at 9am on March 26 from the second launchpad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. This will be the rocket's sixth mission overall and its second commercial mission. Notably, this is also the shortest duration in which ISRO is carrying out two missions of the LVM3 rocket - on October 23rd, 2022 and March 26, 2022. Such quick execution is being carried out in order to meet the timelines of the customer whose satellites are being launched.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tweeting the launch time and date, ISRO also shared pictures of the LVM3 being rolled out from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the second launchpad and those of the vehicle standing at the launchpad. OneWeb has been utilising the launch services of SpaceX, Arianespace and ISRO to place all its 1st generation constellation satellites in orbit OneWeb satellites have flown 17 times to date, and ISRO will be carrying the 18th set.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are one launch away from achieving global coverage. This last launch with ISRO/NSIL will mark over 600 satellites in space, which is the number needed to go commercially live" a OneWeb spokesperson told WION. The firm's services are already live for customers 24x7 in 50 degrees north latitude- Alaska, Canada, Greenland, UK and Northern Europe. By the end of this year, we plan to initiate services across the Globe, it was added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is a dedicated commercial mission being carried out through ISRO's commercial arm NSIL (NewSpace India Limited). The rocket will carry 36 OneWeb Gen-1 satellites with a total mass of 5,805 kg, into a 450 km circular Low Earth Orbit with an inclination of 87.4°. &nbsp;OneWeb is a UK-based firm backed by India's Bharti Group. OneWeb aims to offer high-speed, low-latency internet connectivity from space via its constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>LVM3 is a three-stage vehicle with two S200 solid motors as the first stage, L110 twin liquid engines as the second stage and a final C25 cryogenic upper stage. This 43.5 m tall vehicle has a lift-off mass of 643 tonnes. ISRO said that the vehicle's cryogenic stage is uniquely designed to orient and re-orient in orthogonal direction to meet the customer requirements of injecting satellites precisely and with a gap to avoid a collision. Ejecting 36 satellites is a complex manoeuvre that ISRO carried out during the earlier OneWeb launch in October 2022 as well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>OneWeb had signed a pact with NSIL and ISRO for placing a total of 72 satellites in orbit(in batches of 36). This deal has raked in more than Rs.1000cr revenue for the Indian Government-run space agency. It also provides an opportunity for ISRO to demonstrate the capability and reliability of their largest rocket for offering commercial launch services. Until October 2022, ISRO's LVM3 or GSLV Mk3 rocket was being used only for fulfilling India's national missions such as Chandrayaan-2 and launching heavy satellites. Notably, the LVM3 has performed successful launches in all its missions to date. The March 26th launch of LVM3 will be the rocket's sixth mission.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Subject to all Regulatory approvals being in place, we are confident of the commencement of our services later this year for India and have announced distribution agreements with Hughes to provide services" the OneWeb spokesperson told WION, when queried about service would be rolled out in India.&nbsp;</p>

India's largest rocket LVM3 to perform second commercial mission on March 26

<p>Dr S Somanath, Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) refuted media reports that had claimed that ISRO's proposed space tourism initiative would ferry tourists to space at a cost of Rs 6 crore or USD 700,000 per seat, by the year 2030. Speaking to WION, he mentioned that he had not shared any such per-seat cost or any such specific details about India's proposed space tourism plan in any media interview or at any event. Instead, he said that the Indian space agency is now working on the all-important Indian astronaut mission 'Gaganyaan'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In line with what was revealed in the upper house of Indian Parliament, Dr Somanath maintains that ISRO's space tourism activities shall be firmed up after successful completion of the Indian Astronaut mission 'Gaganyaan'.</p>

<p>"The objective of India’s maiden human spaceflight programme ‘Gaganyaan’ is demonstration of human spaceflight capability to Low Earth Orbit, which is a precursor to future Space Tourism Programme. ISRO has carried out a few feasibility studies for a sub-orbital space tourism mission," Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State had revealed to the parliament in February 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Given that 'Gaganyaan' is India's maiden attempt at ferrying astronauts to space on an Indian launch vehicle, a host of tests are being carried out by ISRO in order to test and prove the reliability, robustness of the systems. As per the information revealed in the ongoing session of the Lok Sabha (India's ower house of parliament), the first test vehicle mission for 'Gaganyaan', TV-D1, is planned in May 2023. This will be followed by the second test vehicle TV-D2 mission and first uncrewed mission of 'Gaganyaan' (LVM3-G1) in the first quarter of 2024.</p>

ISRO chairman refutes reports on space tourism in India at $700,000 per seat

<p>India's Government-run shipbuilder, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) bagged an order for designing and constructing two 'zero-emission' medium-sized container vessels for a European logistics firm Samskip Group.</p>

<p>This is said to be one of the world’s first Zero Emission Feeder Container Vessels that will be powered using Hydrogen Fuel Cells and ultimately with Green Hydrogen. Fuel cells are devices that generate electricity through an electrochemical reaction, instead of combusting (burning) the fuel. In a fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen are combined to generate electricity, heat, and water.</p>

<p>Feeder container vessels are regarded as medium-sized cargo vessels that load up containers from different ports, and take them to a larger container terminal, from where the containers are loaded onto a larger vessel for further transport. Samskip Group, headquartered in Rotterdam, Netherlands, offers the transport and related services by land, sea, rail and air, around the world, focusing on cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Funded by the Norwegian Government's green funding programme and aimed at emission-free transport solutions, the total cost for two ships would be Rs.550cr or $70mn. Each of these ships can carry around 365 units of 45-foot long containers. Once operational, the vessels are intended to serve the European Market where sustainable transportation solutions are in high demand. The vessel deliveries are scheduled from Q3 2025 onwards. &nbsp;</p>

<p>According to CSL, while in 'zero-emission' mode each vessel is expected to achieve around 25,000 tons of CO2 reduction per year. The vessels are equipped with Hydrogen Fuel cells in a Hybrid power system with Diesel Generator backup for longer endurance. It will have an onboard storage facility for Hydrogen fuel and will be fitted with Azimuth thrusters for propulsion and high manoeuvrability. They will achieve zero emission operations in ports also by using green shore power at the port of call, CSL added.</p>

<p>India's CSL has been active in the international shipbuilding arena for more than two decades and has exported high-end vessels to countries such as Norway, the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the Middle East.&nbsp;<br />

India's Cochin Shipyard bags $70 million order to build ‘zero-emission’ ships for Europe

<p>A delegation of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs of the French National Assembly visited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters in India’s southern Bengaluru city on Thursday.</p>

<p>This visit is part of the French delegation's visit to India coordinated by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).&nbsp;</p>

<p>On behalf of the Indian Space agency and the Indian government's Department of Space(DoS),&nbsp;Dr R Umamaheswaran, Director of ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre, briefed the French delegation on the Indian space programme.</p>

<p>The senior scientist highlighted the developments in the Indian Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight programme and the opening up of the space sector in India for private entities.</p>

<p>ISRO said that the visiting French delegation appreciated the long-standing bilateral space cooperation and the opportunities available for the industries in the Indian space sector. The French parliamentary delegation also agreed to work for continued support from the French government for further strengthening the India-France space relations.</p>

<p>India and France have had a long history of cooperation in the space domain. In the 1970s, ISRO and CNES (French space agency) teams worked jointly on developing the Viking engine—a liquid-fuelled rocket engine.</p>

<p>The Indian version of the same is known as the 'Vikas' engine and it continues to be used in the liquid-fuelled stages of India's rockets PSLV, GSLV and LVM3.</p>

<p>Over the years, India and France have also developed satellites such as 'SARAL' (Satellite with ARGOS and ALTIKA), Megha-Tropiques.</p>

<p>The recently launched Indian satellite EOS-6/OceanSat meant for observing and studying the oceans featured a French-origin payload onboard. India and France are also working closely on the Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight programme.</p>

<p>Indicating its rapid progress towards getting its third lunar spacecraft mission-ready, the Indian space agency has revealed that the&nbsp;Chandrayaan-3 integrated spacecraft underwent crucial tests. The integrated spacecraft, comprising the propulsion module, lander and rover, underwent tests to check whether it can handle the excess amounts of noise and vibration that are generated at the time of the rocket's launch and flight.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For context, the sound emanating from the launch of the LVM3 rocket(which is meant to launch Chandrayaan-3) can be heard at least for an eight-kilometre radius around the launchpad. Nestled securely in the nose cone(payload fairing) of the rocket, the spacecraft would have to operate normally even after being exposed to such noise and vibration at launch. Though the payload fairing is adequately protected to shield the spacecraft from the harsh launch environment, it is essential to test and ensure the survivability of the spacecraft.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ISRO carried out these tests at the UR Rao Satellite Centre(URSC) in Bengaluru, India's lead facility for designing, developing and building satellites and interplanetary probes. "These tests were particularly challenging, considering the fact that the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is a composite of three modules -Propulsion Module, Lander Module and the Rover module," ISRO said. The vibration and acoustic tests carried out on the integrated spacecraft have provided sufficient confidence in the structural integrity and survivability in the launch environment, the Indian Space agency added.&nbsp;</p>

ISRO: Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft successfully completes vibration and acoustic tests

<p>The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will carry out the launch of its heaviest and largest rocket LVM3, at 9 AM on Sunday, March 26. Aside from being the second commercial mission of the LMV3 rocket, the launch will also mark the completion of the first generation constellation of UK-Based LEO satellite communications firm OneWeb. OneWeb has been utilising the launch services of SpaceX, Arianespace and ISRO to place all its first-generation constellation satellites in orbit. OneWeb satellites have flown 17 times to date and ISRO will be carrying the 18th set. Placing the entire constellation in orbit would enable the firm to initiate global coverage in 2023.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Just like it had done in October 2022, ISRO's rocket would be carrying 36 OneWeb satellites into low earth orbit, roughly 600 km above the earth's surface. The launch is scheduled to take place from ISRO's second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.</p>

<p>"Across India, OneWeb will bring secured(internet communications) solutions not only to enterprises but also to towns, villages, municipalities and schools, including the hardest-to-reach areas across the country," said the firm backed by India's Bharti group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>OneWeb had signed a pact with ISRO's commercial arm NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) for placing a total of 72 satellites in orbit (in batches of 36). This deal has raked in more than $120 million (Rs 1000 crore) in revenue for the Indian Government-run space agency. It also provides an opportunity for ISRO to demonstrate the capability and reliability of their largest rocket for offering commercial launch services. Until October 2022, ISRO's LVM3 or GSLV Mk3 rocket was being used only for fulfilling India's national missions such as Chandrayaan-2 and launching heavy satellites. Notably, the LVM3 has performed successful launches in all its missions to date. The March 26 launch of LVM3 will be the rocket's sixth mission.</p>

<p>When quizzed about the number of satellites in their Gen1 constellation, OneWeb recently told WION that "the first generation (Gen 1) LEO constellation is comprised of 648 satellites in total, which is inclusive of spare satellites that will be deployed on an as-needed basis.” ISRO's launch will take the constellation numbers up to 618.</p>

<p><strong>Why LEO-based satellites for internet communications?</strong></p>

<p>Traditionally, communications satellites and those used for TV broadcasting purposes have been placed in Geostationary orbits, roughly 36,000 km above the earth's surface. From that high above, a single satellite would be able to view one-third of the Earth's surface and provide services over a vast area - be it communications or TV broadcast or internet or radio and even military applications. As the name suggests, in a geostationary orbit, the satellite will appear stationary when viewed from Earth, as the satellite's orbital movement is in sync with the Earth's rotation. With satellites in this orbit, all DTH antennas, ground-based antennas can simply focus in a single direction towards the sky and can perpetually receive signals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, in modern-day use cases, there are many disadvantages to using Geostationary satellites for providing connectivity. Geostationary orbit satellites are large, heavy, and expensive and there is a considerable lag in the signal as it has to travel a vast distance. The signal delay is estimated at 477 milliseconds for Geostationary orbit satellites and in the case of LEO satellites it is 27 milliseconds. Lesser delays or latency can enable real-time functions such as online gaming, HD video conferencing, remote operations of machines and other strategic uses.</p>

However, to provide constant coverage, a large number of satellites working in unison are required. That's why firms like OneWeb, Starlink and Amazon's Project Kuiper are putting in place constellations. Owing to the smaller size, proven capabilities and low-cost, firms prefer to install LEO constellations to provide global internet connectivity, irrespective of challenges posed by the terrain. However, the satellites in LEO have a short lifespan when compared to those in GEO, thus necessitating the entire constellation to be replaced every five years or so.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the latest factory in Chennai setup at an estimated investment of Rs 150 crore&nbsp;($20 million) and the pre-existing factory in Pune, the firm looks to significantly scale up their manufacturing in India. The annual production will be scaled up to 1,20,000 AC drives and more than 2,00,000 PCBs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kentaro Yamaguchi, Head, Automation at Fuji Electric told WION that the automated equipment being used in India for surface mounting (placing small electronic components) on PCBs is the most sophisticated of its class. He said that even the Japanese factories of Fuji Electric did not have such advanced machines that can perform the surface mounting in a nearly 100% automated manner and in just a few seconds of time.&nbsp;</p>

Japan's Fuji Electric to expand India ops, invest $50mn, export made-in-India hardware

<p>The ground station of the jointly developed India-Bhutan satellite has been inaugurated in Thimpu, the capital city of Bhutan. It is a ground-based facility that helps communicate with and receive information sent by the satellite. Ground stations, the major component of which is the parabolic antenna, communicate with satellites by transmitting and receiving radio waves.</p>

<p>"This ground station will enable Bhutan to receive data from India-Bhutan SAT, pertaining to its territory, directly from the satellite and process it in real-time," said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The inauguration in Bhutan was carried out by Dr Somanath, chairman ISRO and secretary, Department of Space, Lyonpo Tandi Dorji, Bhutan's foreign minister, Lyonpo Karma Wangdi, Bhutan's minister of industry, commerce and employment and Sudhakar Delela, Indian ambassador to Bhutan.</p>

<p>The 'INS-2B' or BhutanSat is ISRO's second nanosatellite for Bhutan. It comprises two payloads&nbsp;— NanoMx and APRS-Digipeater. The NanoMx is a multispectral optical imaging payload developed by India's Space&nbsp;Applications Centre (SAC).<br />

The APRS-Digipeater payload is jointly developed by DITTBhutan and ISRO's UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), ISRO said.</p>

<p>Bhutan's Information and Communication Minister Lyonpo Karma D Wangdi witnessed the launch mission from ISRO's mission control centre in Sriharikota and said that ISRO's commendable track record in launching satellites left no doubt about the mission’s success.</p>

<p>He said the mission was another key milestone for the close relationship between India and Bhutan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking exclusively to WION after the launch, Bhutan's Minister Lyonpo Karma D Wangdi had said the satellite could capture images of Bhutan for mapping forests, urban settlements, and landslide-prone areas and can enable amateur ham radio text messaging services. He added that eight engineers from Bhutan worked along with their counterparts from ISRO on this project.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"BhutanSat launch is a historic moment and a key milestone in India-Bhutan ties. This is just a beginning of collaborative efforts in using outer space and a small beginning for Bhutan's fledgling space programme," he said.&nbsp;</p>
