<p>Over the last decade-and-a-half, the Indian Navy has taken earnest efforts in promoting ocean sailing in the country. Indian Navy's Captain Dilip Donde was the first Indian to circumnavigate the globe in 2009-2010. Subsequently, Commander Abhilash Tomy (retired) was the first Asian skipper to participate in two circumnavigations. Recently, during Golden Globe Race 2022, an east-bound non-stop circumnavigation race starting and finishing in Les Sables d’ Olonne, France, Cdr Abhilash Tomy (retd) accomplished the rare feat of getting a podium finish by completing the gruelling course in second position, all while using primitive sailing tools and no modern technology. On board INSV Tarini, six women officers of the Indian Navy had successfully completed a circumnavigation expedition 'Navika Sagar Parikrama' in the year 2018. While the legacy of such expeditions stands tall in the country, Tarini's latest mission is a special one.</p>

<p>The Indian Navy envisions sending a woman on a solo circumnavigation attempt and this latest expedition is a stepping stone towards that goal. Lieutenant Commanders Dilna (hailing from Kerala) and Roopa (hailing from Pondicherry) have sailed 188 days on Tarini, guided and mentored in two phases (onward phase from Goa to Rio De Janeiro and return from Rio to Goa), by two batches of naval Officers with vast sailing experience. Through rough seas and adverse conditions, the women officers are being put through the process of gaining more confidence and experience towards more daring feats on the high seas.&nbsp;</p>

INSV Tarini to sail into Goa today after 31k kms of sailing

<p>Indian Navy deployed its Aerial Maritime Reconnaissance assets in the wee hours of Tuesday (May 16) in the southern Indian Ocean after a Chinese fishing vesse sank. Chinese fishing vessel Lu Peng Yuan Yu 028 with 39 crew on board had sunk 900 nautical miles (approx 1,666 kms) south of India's Kanyakumari (southern tip of mainland India).</p>

<p>So far, the plight of the 39-member crew that comprises 17 persons from China, 17 persons from Indonesia and five from the Philippines, remains unknown. According to the Indian Navy, its P8I multi-role maritime surveillance aircraft "have carried out multiple &amp; extensive searches despite adverse weather &amp; located multiple objects possibly belonging to the sunken vessel". On the request of Chinese Navy (People's Liberation Army Navy) warships approaching the area, the Indian Navy aircraft also dropped search and rescue equipment (such as life rafts etc).&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In a display of India’s obligations as a credible &amp; responsible partner for ensuring safety at sea, the Indian Navy units also coordinated Search and rescue efforts with other units in the area &amp; guided PLA (N) warships transiting to the scene of incident" the Indian Navy said in a statement. It was added that the Indian Navy continues to remain deployed to provide all possible assistance to the search and rescue efforts. &nbsp;</p>

Indian Navy deploys aerial assets as Chinese fishing vessel sinks in Indian Ocean

<p>India's 6th and final submarine of Project 75, temporarily designated as Yard 11880, has commenced its maiden sea trials. This is a phase where the crucial systems (propulsion, weapons, sensors etc) of the diesel-electric attack submarine will be put to a series of tests under various operating conditions. The&nbsp;vessel is expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy in early 2024 and, once commissioned into the naval services, it'll be known as INS Vaghsheer. The commissioning of a vessel marks its formal induction into the Maritime force and it is there on known by its name with the INS prefix.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Built at Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, Vaghsheer is the sixth in the line of India's Kalvari-class submarines. Generally, the name of the first vessel in a series of ships of a similar kind is used to refer to the entire series. So far, the Indian Navy has commissioned INS Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj, Vela and Vagir.</p>

<p>Scorpene submarines are of French origin and are being built in India under technology transfer from the Naval Group of France.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"MDL has 'delivered'&nbsp;three submarines of the Project – 75 in 24 months and the commencement of sea trials of the sixth submarine is a significant milestone. This is indicative of the boost towards Aatma Nirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India)," said the Indian Navy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vaghsheer is named after the sandfish, a deep-sea predator of the Indian Ocean. Earlier, the Indian Navy operated a Russian-origin submarine by the name INS Vaghsheer. That vessel served the Navy from 1974 to 1997.</p>

<p>"Old warships never die" it is said in the Navy,&nbsp;in line with that, the legacy of the old vessels is resurrected by naming the latest ones after the ships of the bygone era.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At present, India operates seven Russian-origin Kilo class submarines, four German HDW submarines, five Scorpene submarines and the indigenous nuclear ballistic missile submarine INS Arihant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a major breakthrough in the multi-nation search and rescue operation, the Indian Navy has located the sunken Chinese fishing vessel, Lu Peng Yuan Yu 28, which is said to have been carrying 39 crew members when it sunk in the early hours of Tuesday in the middle of the Indian Ocean.</p>

<p>The Chinese deep-sea fishing vessel was carrying 17 Chinese, 17 Indonesians, and five Filipinos. It reportedly sank approximately 1660 kilometers south of Kanyakumari, the southern tip of the Indian peninsula.</p>

<p>Responding to the humanitarian crisis unfolding mid-sea, the Indian Navy deployed its most-potent maritime surveillance and submarine-hunting aircraft, the Boeing Poseidon(P8I).</p>

<p>It is capable of day and night operations, equipped with sophisticated sensors and technologies, and is meant for use in both offensive and defensive roles.</p>

<p>For more than a decade, the Indian Navy has been flying the P8I to carry out a wide range of operations including intelligence gathering, search and rescue, and anti-submarine warfare.</p>

<p>Operating out of the Naval air station INS Rajali in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu, the P8I aircraft carried out an extensive search in the suspected capsize area and located the capsizing fishing vessel.</p>

<p>The Indian Navy also relayed the location of the capsize to the Chinese Navy warships (People's Liberation Army Navy) operating in the region.</p>

<p>"Subsequently, P8I also sighted the fishing vessel’s life raft and guided fishing vessel Lu Peng Yuan Yu 017 towards it. Indian Navy is on standby to provide any additional assistance to the ongoing SAR efforts" a spokesperson of Indian Navy said.</p>

<p>Chinese media reports say that the remains of two crew members of the sunken vessel had been found. However, the plight of the remaining 35 are still unknown.</p>

<p>A handful of nations in the Indian Ocean Region have been contributing to the search and rescue efforts. India and Australia have deployed aircraft for the search and rescue, China has deployed its fishing vessels and Naval ships, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia have also been coordinating in the ongoing operations.</p>

Indian Navy’s P8I plane locates sunken Chinese fishing vessel and life raft

<p>In a significant step aimed at enhancing cooperation between the Indian Navy and the Royal Saudi Naval Force, cadets from the latter are in India for 24 days of afloat training. 55 cadets and five Directing Staff from the King Fahd Naval Academy, Saudi Arabia arrived this week in Kochi, the headquarters of India's Southern Naval Command, as part of their first-ever training with the Indian Navy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The visitors from the friendly-foreign Navy arrived on board the Indian Navy's First Training Squadron(1TS) ships INS Tir and INS Sujata. During their stay in India, they will be undergoing hands-on training on various aspects of seamanship, navigation, firefighting and emergency drills, onboard the ships.</p>

<p>‘Arikomban’ (translates to ‘rice-tusker’) in Malayalam, earned the moniker for his raids on rice shops and settlements in the Idukki district in Kerala, where he originally belonged. There were also some claims that the wild tusker had fatally attacked a handful of individuals there, thus prompting those living in the region to demand for his relocation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is often reported that wild elephants venture out into towns, raid crops and cause damage to property. However, this points to the larger issue of habitat destruction, towns and settlements coming up on forest fringes and natural vegetation not being available in abundance for wildlife.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While it is being claimed that this particular elephant killed a few people, there are no clear indications in this regard. However, the demands of the local people were taken cognisance of and the Kerala Forest Department planned to capture the wild tusker and turn him into a trained semi-wild elephant, a gruesome and painful process that takes months. Vehement opposition from activists and a court decision ensured that the only way ahead was to go for a translocation.</p>

<p>Finally, the tusker was translocated from Chinnakanal in Kerala's Idukki district to the Periyar Tiger Reserve (ferried a distance of nearly 80 km), close to the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. The entire operation was carried out by the Kerala forest department, with police vehicles ensuring the smooth movement of the convoy and avoiding any untoward incidents along the way. While a hostile reaction was anticipated, those living in the regions close to the Periyar Tiger Reserve (where the elephant was being released) had even performed a traditional 'Puja' to welcome the new inhabitant of the wild.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Barely a few days after being released in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, the pachyderm ventured into the estates in the Megamalai range in Tamil Nadu's Theni district. Known to walk dozens of kilometres every day, wild elephants move across regions in search of food and water. Thanks to a radio collar around his neck, Forest department officials from both Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been able to monitor the elephant's location real-time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this week, during the wee hours, the tusker got back to his old ways and ventured close to a ration shop in Megamalai and attempted to break open a window, possibly to get hold of the rice stored within. Later, the tusker is said to have ventured back into the forest. Images from the area showed the tusker's giant footprints in the vicinity of the settlements and the ration shop. Carrying on the moniker from Kerala, those in Tamil Nadu refer to the wild tusker as 'Arisi Komban' (translates to rice tusker in Tamil).</p>

<p>Forest Officials from Theni in Tamil Nadu told WION that the radio collar placed on the elephant's neck is operational and the movement of the animal is being tracked both by radio telemetry and GPS. Those staying in the region have been advised to not venture out unnecessarily and particularly have been advised against venturing out late in the evenings. We have forest staffers who are monitoring the elephant's movement round-the-clock and alerting those in the region, the official added.</p>

<p>Since the time the tusker ventured into the Megamalai region, the district administration has temporarily suspended tourism and increased the number of Police personnel at the checkposts that lead to Megamalai.<br />

India: From 'Arikomban' in Kerala to 'Arisi komban' in Tamil Nadu- A wild tusker's journey

<p>As a result of a partnership between the Indian and Israeli Governments, an 'India-Israel Center of Water Technology'(CoWT) is to come up at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, campus in Chennai, said the institute. India's Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs would be collaborating with MASHAV, Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation, to establish this new facility. The key objective of this facility will be to ensure the implementation of Israel's best technologies for Indian requirements and to work on sustainable management solutions for the Indian water sector.</p>

<p>When queried about the budget allocated for this new facility and when it is expected to come up, IIT Madras representatives told WION that the facility would come up at a cost of Rs.23-30cr (approx $3-4mn) and would start in a few months.</p>

<p>A letter of Intent in this regard was signed in New Delhi, earlier this month by Mr Manoj Joshi, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras and Mr Naor Gilon, Ambassador of Israel to India, in presence of Shri. S. Jaishankar and Mr Eli Cohen, Hon’ble External Affairs Ministers of India and Israel, respectively, in the presence of Prof. T. Pradeep, Institute Professor, IIT Madras.</p>

<p>According to Dr Lior Asaf, Water Attache, Embassy of Israel, the CoWT will work towards the mutual exchange of technology, scientific information, and literature, and hold discussions and consultations on various issues in the area with experts from both the countries to address problems in drinking water and sewerage management and to develop new areas of intervention.</p>

<p>Elaborating on the outcomes envisaged, Prof. T. Pradeep, Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras, said, “Water security of India depends on the implementation of advanced and affordable technologies as well as efficient management of the resources. There is much to learn from Israel, a leader in the area, under the guidance of AMRUT(Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) Mission.”</p>

<p>He added that the two Governments also intend to jointly identify specific projects relating to integrated water resources management, Urban water supply and non-revenue water, water and sewage recycling, IoT solution and online monitoring, water harvesting, smart data management and AI, among other areas, with the objective of demonstrating most advanced technologies in the field.</p>

India, Israel to share expertise and tech in water management at new facility in IIT-Madras

<p>Over a period of 10 years (2023-32), South Korean automaker Hyundai will be investing USD&nbsp;2.5 billion (INR 20,000 crore) in India. This investment is&nbsp;aimed at scaling up the firm's existing manufacturing operations of electric vehicles and internal combustion engine vehicles, developing an Electric Vehicle (EV) ecosystem, setting up EV charging stations and establishing an EV battery assembly unit.</p>

<p>Unsoo Kim, MD and&nbsp;CEO&nbsp;of Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu government in this regard.&nbsp;The MoU was exchanged in the presence of top officials from HMIL and the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin.</p>

<p>"As part of our long-term vision, we have finalised plans to develop and establish Tamil Nadu as a base for Hyundai's EV manufacturing in India," said Unsoo Kim. He added that this investment would be utilised to set up a battery pack assembly unit with the capacity to assemble 1,78,000 units per year. In addition to this, the firm would install 100 EV charging stations at key locations on major highways over a period of five years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin recalled how his father and then Chief Minister M&nbsp;Karunanidhi had laid the foundation stone for the first Hyundai factory in Chennai, in the year 1996. Tracing the growth of Hyundai, he said that the South Korean firm is now the second-largest carmaker in India and the largest exporter of cars from the country. He also added that in terms of the manufacture of automobiles and automobile components, Tamil Nadu has been the leading state in India. Coinciding with its 25th-year milestone in India, Hyundai also rolled out its millionth car made in the country, in the year 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to WION, Hyundai's AVP, of Corporate Affairs, Puneet Anand said that the firm will be expanding its automobile manufacturing capacity in the Chennai factory.</p>

<p>"Outside Korea, India is the single largest manufacturing hub of Hyundai, and we will be scaling up the manufacturing capacity from the current&nbsp;775,000&nbsp;(7.75 lakh) cars per annum to&nbsp;850,000&nbsp;(8.5 lakh). We export made-in-India cars to 88 countries," he added.</p>

<p>According to him, the latest investment by Hyundai is focussed on sustainable mobility and assembling EV batteries locally and it'll eventually bring down the cost of electric vehicles in the country. The firm also announced that it will also be launching a range of electric vehicles across price segments in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The violent attack took place at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday. After his wounds were dressed by a nurse, Sandeep reportedly picked up a pair of surgical scissors and went on a stabbing spree. He is said to have attacked the police personnel who brought him to the hospital and then went on to stab Dr. Vandana Das, a final year medical student serving as a house surgeon there. She sustained injuries to her head, neck and spine. He then went on to injure other hospital staff, vandalised the hospital till he was finally overpowered and restrained by security staff and other bystanders.</p>

<p>A winged-drone that's almost the size of a car(three metres each in length and width), manages to take-off vertically using eight vertical propellers, flies forward for a short duration using a set of four forward propellers and then lands vertically, entirely powered by its batteries. What if there was a pilot sitting onboard and ferrying a single passenger and light cargo in a larger version of the same drone? That's what Chennai-based firm ePlane Company is working on and their latest test flight of a prototype drone has ensured that their 'flying taxi' dream could become a reality by 2025.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, ePlane Company shared a video of their 'e50' prototype drone performing a successful forward flight. "During this test (where the drone was flown using a remote control), we proved that the drone can take-off vertically using its eight vertical propellers and then it gradually moves forward by the efforts of its four forward propellers. We were able to showcase the transition from vertical flight to forward flight, as is intended" Professor Satya Chakravarthy, Founder and CEO of ePlane, explained to WION.</p>

<p>In simple terms, their drone taxi is meant to take-off like a helicopter, then gradually it will be able to speed up and switch to its forward propellers and fly forward as a conventional aircraft does. When it is time to land, the same process happens in reverse, and it lands back again like a helicopter. This makes their concept plane taxi simpler to operate from very limited space.</p>

<p>Prof Chakravarthy, who is also a faculty at the Department of Aerospace Engineering,&nbsp;IIT Madras,&nbsp;said that the current prototype 'e50' is a scaled-down version of the intended drone taxi 'e200'. He added that the maiden flight test of 'e50' helped the team learn a lot in terms of design, assembly, flight controller behaviour, etc. "The time that we will take to develop 'e200' has been shortened now," he says.</p>

<p>The firm has extensively flown and tested its smallest prototype 'e6', a 1.7m wingspan drone capable of carrying a payload of 6kg&nbsp;and flying over long distances. This model is meant to be used for surveillance and delivery services. In the coming months, the firm hopes to carry payloads of 50kg on their 'e50' model and perform a 100km flight in an hour, on a single charge. "Our first 'e200' drone taxi prototype will be ready by the end of this year and by 2025 we hope to have the final iteration ready," he told WION. The 'e200' is an electric drone taxi that can carry up to 200kg (a pilot and a passenger) within a range of 200km.</p>

‘Drone taxi’ prototype built by India’s ePlane Company undertakes test flight, may fly by 2025

<p>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has initiated the series of tests required for qualifying and validating its most-powerful liquid-fuelled engine yet, one that is powered by special refined kerosene (dubbed as 'ISROsene') and super-cooled liquid oxygen. Once ready, this 2000kN engine and its stage(associated components, fuel tanks etc.) will be replacing the current L110(core stage) of India's largest rocket - Launch Vehicle Mark 3(LVM3). This is meant to significantly add to the lifting power of the LVM3 rocket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the procedure followed in such cases, ISRO carried out tests on the Pressure Head Test Article(PHTA), a setup that comprises all engine systems except the thrust chamber. "The test is the first of a series of tests planned to validate the design of the propellant feed system, including the low-pressure and high-pressure turbo-pumps, the gas generator, and control components," ISRO said. In a major success for ISRO, this initial test is said to be a grand success and paves the way for up to seven or eight tests, which will also include the test firing of the new engine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As part of Monday's test, the parameters that led up to the engine start were checked and validated. "After the chill down of the LOX circuit, the feed circuit of kerosene was filled, and LOX was admitted into the gas generator by opening the injection valve. Successful performance of the test article helps derive the sequence of operations for further tests" ISRO said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>WION has learnt that the turbo pump (a component used to pump fuel or oxidizer to the thrust chamber) used in the Semi-cryogenic engine is of 36Megawatt power, which is more than seven times higher than the turbopump used on ISRO's legacy Vikas engine that uses a 5Megawatt turbopump.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Valimala, Thiruvananthapuram, has undertaken the design and development of this Semi-cryogenic engine and has also roped in Indian industry to take part in the efforts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The test was carried out at the newly-established test facility at IPRC, Mahendragiri, which is capable of testing semi-cryogenic engines up to 2600 kN thrust and will support the subsequent testing and qualification of the fully integrated Semi-cryogenic engine and stage. This test has demonstrated the successful performance of the test facility and power head test article in the maiden attempt itself.&nbsp;</p>

The firm hopes to roll out 3,00,000 ACs and 6,50,000 compressors per year, and these products are meant to cater to local demand and exports.</p>
