He highlighted his government's programmes like - financial programs, health insurance, cleanliness drive, housing programmes and digital identification process and the center of which are the people of India. He said his government's plan is to make India tuberculosis free by 2025.

He expressed appreciation for "no single-use plastics" in the UN. PM Modi said his government has "initiated a programme to remove single-use plastics from India" which received wide applause inside the General Assembly hall.

Climate change also formed a crucial part of his speech with PM saying, "we are one of the foremost countries to take steps on climate change.. we started the international solar alliance."

He invited world leaders to join India to lead "coalition for disaster resilient infrastructure" that will help the world to create an infrastructure which can withstand natural disasters.

Waring the world about the threat of terror, PM said, "terror is common fight of the world. The world is divided on terror that impacts the principals that lead to the birth of UN. The world needs to speak in one voice on terror."

Interestingly he made no mention of Pakistan during his speech, sending out a clear message of dehypenation to Islamabad. This is his second address to UNGA since 2014.

Unlike the Indian prime minister speech, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke for 40 minutes and overshot his time limit. He raked up Kashmir, as expected and threatened that "there would be another Pulwama and guess what will happen, they would blame us."

The development comes at a time when Turkey has been very vocal and continues to back Pakistan's line on Kashmir. In fact, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke from the United Nations General Assembly on Kashmir, which may irk New Delhi.

Cyprus and Turkey don't have very good ties as Turkey occupies the northern part of the island country. Recently, Ankara threatened Cyprus with its plan to drill in what Nicosia says is their "exclusive economic zone".

Nicos Anastasiades speaking from UNGA said, "Turkey threatens Cyprus that there will be severe consequences if we proceed ahead with our energy programme... it threatens neighbouring states and energy companies, with which we are cooperating and have established conventional obligations".

Cyprus is called Europe's last divided country with its capital being referred to as the last divided capital of the continent. The Mediterranean island country was invaded by Turkey in 1974 and led to the formation of "Northern Cyprus", recognised only by Turkey. Turkey continues to retain its military presence in the region and has faced criticism for its actions by the United Nations Security Council.

The annual meeting of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Foreign Ministers on the sideline of United Nations Security Council (UNSC ) saw high-voltage drama on Thursday after Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi refused to enter into the meet till Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar's statement is over. The meet none the less started without the Pakistani foreign minister present in the meet. During the meet, Indian Foreign Minister, S Jaishankar raised the issue of terrorism saying, "Ours is really not just a story of missed opportunities but also of deliberate obstacles. Terrorism is among them." He explained, "In our view, elimination of terrorism in all its forms is a precondition not only for fruitful cooperation but also for the very survival of our region itself." Highlighting lack of regionalism in South Asia, Jaishankar said, "If we have lagged behind, it is because South Asia does not have normal trade and connectivity that other regions do." "SAARC hasn't been able to make much headway on connectivity with no progress on motor vehicles, Railways agreement and SAARC Regional Air Services Agreement, initiated by India," he said. Watch: India vs Pakistan face off in New York today × The Pakistani Foreign Minister came inside the room only when Jaishankar left and cited India's decision to remove the special status for Jammu and Kashmir as the reason behind his action. Meanwhile, He also claimed to have the support of SAARC nations to host the next summit in Islamabad. He said, "The good development is, SAARC summit that was to happen in Islamabad in 2016, we are ready to host it. I invited SAARC ministers to Islamabad for the summit. The next summit will happen in Islamabad. No one objected to it". When asked if India has agreed too and will PM Modi travel to Islamabad, Qureshi gave no reply. Sources have told WION that Pakistani FM suggested it can put forward the dates of next summit to which Nepal, the chair of the grouping, said this is an informal meet and not a forum to decide the next summit. Last year also SAARC foreign ministers saw a lot of attention as India's then external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj left the room early leading to an angry Pak's foreign minister coming out and making unwarranted remarks to the standing press. India's focus has been BIMSTEC since the cancellation of SAARC summit in 2016 in the aftermath of the URI terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. India along with Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Maldives had boycotted the summit in Islamabad. India has been keen on SAARC and even launched the South Asian satellite in 2017 and hosts the South Asian University. New Delhi is providing 100% capital cost towards the construction of South Asian University.

South Africa has lauded India's role in climate solutions and said the relationship between the two countries is strengthening. Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal in New York, South Africa's Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said that India is certainly beginning to lead the way in key solutions to world problems. He also called Mahatma Gandhi a South African hero.

Below is the full transcript of the conversation

WION: What is the status of the ties between India and South Africa?

Naledi Pandor: The ties are extremely strong. India and South Africa are old friends, we have a lot of South Africans whose families originated in India. Their roots are still in India.

India also supported South Africa in the struggle for freedom. India has been a good friend of South Africa during the freedom [struggle], we continued to be partners in BRICS family and the relations are strengthening every year.

WION: India is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. How do you see it?

Naledi Pandor: I think that it is very important for countries to commemorate leaders who have founded our democracies but who have also made an important contribution to the world political philosophy. Mahatma Gandhi, with his wonderful attention to non-violent struggle made a deep impression on our leaders like Nelson Mandela and in fact was a precursor to the concept of mass mobilisation which influenced much of the struggle for freedom in South Africa. So Mahatma stands for us as a great example and is remembered in South Africa as a hero of South Africa as much as he is considered a Mahatma in India.

WION: India has been focusing on providing a solution to the climate change issue... how do you see India's role?

Naledi Pandor: Well, I think that India is certainly beginning to lead the way in showing what some solutions are and the speech that was made by Prime Minister Modi during the Climate Change Summit in the UN was a very important speech where he reported on the steps being taken by the government of India in order to address what is a massive global challenge. Solar energy, renewable sources of energy of all kinds, are very important. We are using solar, renewable, as wells as biomass as new sources of energy and of course India is renowned in advances in innovation, so we look forward to our collaboration with India to build even more solutions to climate change challenges that confront us. India has agriculture as one of the core basis of its economy, and similarly, South Africa relies on agriculture. We have to look at land recovery, new technology and at how to best use our water resources in order to respond to the challenges of climate change.

WION: You met with BRICS foreign ministers. What was the focus?

Naledi Pandor: Well, I think that BRICS is an extremely important grouping because it holds up the values of cooperation and of multilateralism. For me, BRICS is a progressive global forum of countries that have among the largest populations in the region and that play a very important role both in regional affairs as well as world affairs. I believe the work that is being done in BRICS is going to illustrate to the world the value of partnership and collaboration. Our deliberations as foreign ministers went very well today. We got a report from Brazil, which is the current BRICS chair and we will have the summit in November. We also got the indication from Russia, who will assume the chair in 2020 as to what their plans and thinking are for their year of chairing the BRICS family.

WION: What is your view on the Indo-Pacific concept?

Naledi Pandor: We are members of IORA which is the Indian Ocean Rim Association. South Africa has been playing the leadership role there, this brings many nations together and I think that whatever we do with the oceans, we need to understand that we are drawing together many nations because I think oceans are a shared resource and they don't belong to a particular country. Therefore, whatever we do, any alliance that we build must understand these needs to be inclusive alliances who are all surrounded by the ocean benefit from it.

WION: Can you give an overview of the ties?

PM Nikol Pashinyan: We are very close historically, culturally and politically and today the most urgent question is to make our countries closer economically. Today, we had a very positive discussion with PM Modi and we were discussing the opportunities to make our economic ties stronger and to increase the level of bilateral trade.

PM Nikol Pashinyan: We can cooperate on exporting and importing goods and products. We can cooperate particularly in tourism, culture and the Indian prime minister has made a very interesting proposal to start a movie project about the mutual history of Armenia and Indian people and our historic ties.

WION: What do you think about the issue of terrorism?

PM Nikol Pashinyan: Terrorism is a global issue and world is facing this challenge and international cooperation is aimed at addressing this challenge and particularly our cooperation in framework of the United Nation should be more and more effective and we should find a way to eradicate fundamentalism and terrorism and to create proper environment for cooperation and friendship.

WION: How big is the challenge of climate change for you?

PM Nikol Pashinyan: Climate is a global challenge. Firstly, I think that international cooperation must be done for addressing this challenge because it in not possible to solve the problem with the effort of one country because as you know, climate doesn't know borders that is why we need effective cooperation. Our country is ready and now we taking steps to address this challenge.

Speaking in New York at an event, Jaishankar said that the "dominating narrative of the relationship" between New Delhi and Islamabad "is terrorism, suicide bombings, violence", making it impossible to resume a normal relationship. He highlighted the recent terror attacks in India at Uri, Pathankot, and Pulwama and said that "its a very hard narrative to sell to people... It's a democracy, sentiments do matter and one message [that] I don't want to give [is that] you do terrorism by night, and [then] it's business as usual during the day." He added that "it is very difficult in real life to separate issues". India has been focusing on the issue of counter-terrorism and requesting the world to speak about it in unison. While slamming Islamabad, Jaishankar said, "You have terrorism in different parts of the world but there is no part where a country uses it consciously as a large scale industry against its neighbour". This is the second time in a week that the minister has slammed Pakistan in New York at an event.

Calling Pakistan "terroristan", External Affair Minister S Jaishankar has said that New Delhi can't talk to a country that sponsors terror and uses it as a state policy.

Speaking at Asia Society in New York, Jaishankar said, "They have to accept the model which they have built for themselves no longer works. You cannot in this day and age, conduct policy using terrorism as a legitimate instrument of statecraft, that is at the heart of the issue. We have no problem in talking to Pakistan, we have a problem talking to terroristan."

Jaishankar further said Pakistan's reaction towards India removing special status for Jammu and Kashmir on August 5 is of "anger and frustration" since the country has "created an entire industry of terrorism to deal with Kashmir issue. It is bigger than that, they created for India" and they "now see an investment of 70 years undercut if this policy succeed".

Pakistan, in the aftermath of India's decision to remove special status, has raked up the issue globally but hasn't got any attraction.

Jaishankar urged Pakistan to do "something for its own good, if it does that it would enable normal neighbourly relation with India."

Highlighting the issue of cross border terrorism emanating from Pakistan, Jaishankar said, "The issue between India and Pakistan, it's not like we agree on everything else, we have a wonderful relationship and there is Kashmir issue. We had an attack in Mumbai, the last time I checked Mumbai was not part of Kashmir. If Pakistani terrorist can attack states and regions, we need to recognise there is a bigger problem".

Explaining further Jaishankar said, "The problem is in the mindset. Every time there is a change of government, look it's new, I have nothing to do with earlier guys, it's all their fault. Point is, there is a fundamental issue which they need to understand, and we need to encourage them to do, that is to do away with terrorism. They know where the camps are. Anyone knows where the camps are, just google that."
