Bangladeshi foreign secretary Shahidul Haque has said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam is an internal issue and they have got assurances from New Delhi. Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Haque also spoke on Bangladesh PM Hasina's India visit and SAARC. Edited excerpts:

WION: What are the key outcomes of Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina's India visit?

Shahidul Haque: I think there has been progress on many fronts and we have charted a new course for the next year. As you know PM Modi is likely to visit Bangladesh next year. There is very solid progress in every possible front -- business, trade, water.

WION: Are you worried about NRC in Assam?

Shahidul Haque: we are not worried but certainly, we are keeping a close eye on the development and as I have told you, Indian authorities have assured us, its an internal matter an will remain so. As a friendly country, we like to believe that.

WION: Was SAARC discussed when both PM Modi and PM Hasina held discussions?

Shahidul Haque: Regional cooperation issue came up in the discussion. Both PMs agreed that regional cooperation is essential because [South Asia] has the least regional cooperation globally. In that context, the discussion [about regional bodies] came up but certainly, there is more focus on Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

India on Friday said that Pakistan "made up the number" of 58 countries it claimed backed Islamabad at the United Nations Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva in September.

Ministry of external affairs spokesperson, Raveesh Kumar at the weekly presser said, "I haven't seen the list.. this is a question should be addressed to them and this is something they have been claiming since the beginning. I don't think they have been able to show this list of countries"

"I saw this interview in which somebody asked about the list of countries and they were not able able to produce. Sometimes they make up the number, which they did, at a time people are asking the list, they don't have," he added.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi lost his cool in an interview to a Pakistani channel when asked about the names of the 58 countries who Islamabad claimed backed them at UNHRC.

Pakistan also failed to muster any support to table a resolution on Kashmir at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

On Pakistan PM urging protestors to cross the line of control or LOC, MEA called it "provocative and irresponsible" language by a person who occupies "high constitutional office" and does not know how "to conduct international relations".

"It's not normal behaviour," he added.

On Pakistan going to United Nations security council so that 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed can get basic expenses, MEA said, "One country gives an application on the behalf of global terrorist to UNSC Sanctions committee so that he can get pocket money. They give application for pocket money and then they say why we don't trust them when they say they acting on terrorist. This is the duplicity we talk about"

Pakistani government in its request said Saeed is the sole supporter of his four-member family. The development came just a day before Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan addressed to United Nations General Assembly.

Saeed who worked as an assistant professor in University of engineering technology in Lahore retired in 1999 and was drawing a pension of Pakistan RS 45700 through Habib bank. However, his bank account was blocked after UNSC listed him, freezing his assets.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday ruled out a visit to Pakistan for the Kartarpur Corridor opening, making it clear that he would be only leading the first all-party Jatha to the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara to pay obeisance.

Amid reports incorrectly suggesting that Dr. Manmohan Singh had accepted Pakistan’s invitation to go there for the opening of Kartarpur Corridor, the Punjab chief minister told mediapersons that he did not believe the former prime minister had any such plans. “There is no question of me going (to Pakistan for Kartarpur corridor opening) and I feel Dr Manmohan Singh will not go as well,” he said, pointing out that there was a huge difference between visiting Pakistan and going to the gurdwara through the Corridor. The chief minister’s remarks came in response to questions after a section of the media erroneously claimed that Dr Singh had accepted Pakistan invite and would be going across the border for the Kartarpur Corridor inauguration. The fact was that Dr Singh had accepted Captain Amarinder’s invitation to join the Jatha, to be led by the chief minister, through the Kartarpur Corridor, to pay obeisance at the historic gurdwara across the border on the occasion of the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, an official spokesperson pointed out. As far as visiting Pakistan is concerned, the chief minister reiterated that he would not go there till Pakistan stops cross border terrorism. He said Punjab was the worst sufferer of Pakistan’s cross border terrorism and he cannot think of going there till it stops. The Chief Minister had, earlier in the day, called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and former PM Dr Manmohan Singh to extend a formal invitation to participate in the main events organised by the state government to mark the historic occasion. Both Modi and Kovind had accepted the invite, while Dr. Singh had also agreed to join the Jatha that would go to the Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara on the opening day of the Corridor. Asked if Pakistan was playing a dirty game over the Kartarpur Corridor, the Chief Minister told the media persons to put this question to their prime minister Imran Khan. India, on its part, was fully geared to ensure the security and safety of the pilgrims, he added.

US, India have expressed hope of trade deal very soon, days after it was announced that both sides were in talks to chalk out an agreement. "We are progressing very smoothly" Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said, and added "we sit down in a comfortable and very open-minded way...so it more a question of scheduling time but I don't see any big issue holding it back for any reason" US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on trade said, "neither government said there will be trade deal in five minutes..we both know each other's issues. Now that the election has come and gone, PM Modi has a very clear strong position in the parliament it should be a lot easier to take decisive action" Ross said Washington is only concerned on trade deficit arising from the protectionist barrier. US President has been vocal about trade issues globally including with India, calling New Delhi as "Tariff King" due to high tariff imposed by the country on America goods. Ross is in Delhi to meet Goyal which the former described will be "frank and mature discussions" Asked if New Delhi is being dealt unfairly by Washington, Ross said, "President Trump has gone out of his way to have a good relationship with PM Modi. Whole Howdy Modi event is unprecedented in the entire history of the US. Never has the US sitting President had such a big public event with a foreign leader with any country." Adding, "If there is any doubt, it was a very conscious and overt act to send a clear message to both the Indian American community and to the Indian community. This is a qualitatively different relationship wich previously never existed between India and US and all of our discussions are conducted within that frame of reference" Indian PM Modi and US President Donald Trump met twice last week, first in Houston during the big diaspora event, Howdy, Modi! and then in New York for a bilateral meet with focus on trade and counter-terrorism.

India, US trade talks progressing very smoothly, says Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal

Former Prime Minister of India Dr Mammohan Singh on Thursday accepted an invitation extended by the Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh to join the first Jatha (religious group) to Sri Kartarpur Gurdwara on November 9 for attending the inaugural ceremony of the Kartarpur Corridor.

Dr Manmohan Singh will also attend the main event of Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary celebrations at Sultanpur Lodhi on November 12.
