Ryanair accused of discrimination for putting South Africans through Afrikaans test

<p>The 21st Amendment to the Constitution to empower the Sri Lankan Parliament over the executive president will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval on Monday, Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said on Sunday.</p>

<p>The 21st Amendment is expected to annul the 20A to the Constitution, which gives unfettered powers to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after abolishing the 19th Amendment that will strengthen Parliament.</p>

<p>Rajapakshe said that a special discussion on the matter was held with the backing of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa last week. He along with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Foreign minister G L Peiris participated in the discussion, Lanka First, an online news portal reported.</p>

Rajapakshe said that he expects to make a statement in Parliament on the 21st Amendment to the Constitution next week.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Wickremesinghe last week batted for the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, saying it will curb the president's unlimited powers while enhancing the role of Parliament in governing the debt-ridden country which is also facing an unprecedented political turmoil.</p>

<p>The powerful Rajapaksa family tightened their grip on power after their massive victory in the general elections in August 2020, which allowed them to amend the Constitution to restore presidential powers and install close family members in key positions.</p>

<p>The constitutional reform was a major plank of the agreement between Wickremesinghe and Rajapaksa when he took over the job of prime minister on May 12.</p>

<p>A Chinese fighter aircraft dangerously intercepted an Australian military surveillance plane in the South China Sea region in May, Australia`s defence department said on Sunday.</p>

<p>The Royal Australian Air Force P-8 maritime surveillance aircraft was intercepted by a Chinese J-16 fighter during "routine maritime surveillance activity" in international airspace in the region on May 26, defence said in a statement.</p>

<p>"The intercept resulted in a dangerous manoeuvre which posed a safety threat to the P-8 aircraft and its crew," it said.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters in Perth that his government had expressed concerns to China "through appropriate channels".</p>

<p>"Earlier, the farmers of our country lacked information about what type of soil his is, what is the deficiency in his soil, how much is there," the PM said. "To overcome this problem, a huge campaign was launched to give soil health cards to the farmers in the country," he added.</p>

<p>The prime minister also outlined the government’s efforts and schemes for water conservation.</p>

<p>"In March this year itself, a campaign to conserve 13 big rivers has also started in the country," he added. "In this, along with reducing pollution in the water, work is also being done to plant forests on the banks of rivers," Modi explained.</p>

According to fire service official Jalal Ahmed, the fire broke out at a container storage facility in Sitakunda, around 40 km from the Chittagong port. The fire started around midnight and Ruhul Amin Sikder, spokesman for the Bangladesh Inland Container Association (BICA), said that the fire probably got worse because of the containers carrying chemicals present in the private depot including hydrogen peroxide. The fire also destroyed millions of dollars of garment products which were kept in the container depot.</p>

The video featured glimpses of an ancient cave which dates back thousands of years. The clip was also shared on the Google Arts & Culture Instagram page as the video gained popularity on social media and in a short duration, it was viewed by a large number of people.
