Artificial Intelligence (AI) making big strides into today’s reality is a scientific history in the making. With AI increasingly becoming common in our daily lives, it also threatens millions of jobs across the world. The next on the list can be TV anchors. In Israel, TikTok-based news broadcast claims to be the world’s first fully AI-powered news network.

The broadcast channels have AI-rendered anchors who can present news in different languages, engaging diverse audiences worldwide. This cutting-edge approach to news broadcasting could set a new standard in journalism, but it also raises moral and ethical concerns.

The initiative on ACT News, a growing news-content channel on TikTok, is spearheaded by Israeli journalist Miri Michaeli and long-time political operative Moshe Klughaft.

The broadcast channel first show AI-generated clones of Michaeli and veteran journalist Amit Segal, presenting news on their TikTok channel. These clones look different from their real-life counterparts, and even the lip movements do not seem to match, but a casual viewer might easily take these videos as real recordings.

AI in journalism: A hot issue

The use of AI in newsrooms has been a hotly contested issue in recent months. Many of the journalism watchdogs have expressed their concerns about accuracy, transparency and the ethics behind presenting such content as being humanly produced.

But AI in journalism is not months old. News agency Associated Press (AP) has been using AI to produce corporate earning stories since 2014. In 2018, China’s Xinhua news agency created the world’s first AI-powered male news anchors and earlier this year debuted its first AI female news anchor.

The popularity of generative AI tools like Google’s ChatGPT, has raised concerns across industries. These AI tools are based on the data mining of public data available online, leading to allegations of plagiarism if they are presented as original creations.

Keeping in mind these concerns, Segal and Michaeli have said that they will approve all the AI-generated texts spoken on air by their digital clones in advance of broadcasts, “ensuring accuracy and credibility”.

The approval of all such statements makes the model not dissimilar to one in which a junior reporter or editor writes scripts for a senior anchor to read on air — except this method cuts jobs for reporting and writing staff.

Despite these moral and ethical concerns, ACT News has seen rapid success on TikTok, with millions of views and substantial investments backing the venture.

Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been pardoned in five criminal cases, state media said Tuesday. Daw Suu, a name sometimes used by Suu Kyi's supporters for her, still faces 14 other criminal cases. She has been in detention since she was ousted in a 2021 military coup. The announcement was part of an amnesty of more than 7,000 prisoners to mark Buddhist Lent.

"Chairman of State Administration Council pardons Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who was sentenced by the relevant courts," the broadcast said.

Sources told AFP news agency that despite the clemency, Suu Kyi will not be freed from house arrest.

"She couldn't be freed completely although some sentences against her were pardoned. She still has to face 14 cases. Only five cases out of 19 were pardoned."

This has reduced Suu Kyi’s sentence by six years in partial pardon, Myanmar’s junta spokesperson said. Former president Win Myint, who was ousted along with Suu Kyi, also received a reduced jail sentence after getting two of his charges pardoned.

Aung San Suu Kyi: Rise and fall of ‘Mother Suu’- Myanmar’s democracy icon

Aung San Suu Kyi moved to Delhi in 1960 and spent most of her young adult life in the United States and England. She met Michael Aris, a British scholar of Himalayan studies at Oxford University, whom she married in 1972.

Suu Kyi, the daughter of Myanmar’s independence hero, Aung San, entered politics in 1988. Ironically, when she returned to Burma from the United Kingdom, the long-time military leader of Burma, General Ne Win, stepped down followed by mass demonstrations. It was the same military regime, this time of General Min Aung Hlaing, which arrested Suu Kyi in 2021 for 33 years, almost a lifetime.

Here is a timeline of key events from Aung San Suu Kyi’s life:

April 1988: Suu Kyi returned to Myanmar to attend to her ailing mother amid pro-democracy protests, which caused the power eruption of the 26-year-old military leader, Gen. Ne Win.

26 Aug 1988: Suu Kyi gave her first-ever public speech before a crowd of approximately 150,000 democracy protestors and issues a call for democracy in Yangon.

27 Sep 1988: Suu Kyi helps founded an opposition party, the National League for Democracy.

20 July 1989: Just a year after returning to her home, Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest. The house arrest continues for six years.

27 May 1990: The National League for Democracy wins a landslide election victory, but the military government nullifies the polls and refuses to hand over power.

A 23-year-old woman from Delhi was allegedly killed by her relative for refusing to marry him, as she wanted to become financially independent, her family said on Friday. Nargis, a resident of Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, was preparing for government job examinations.

The family said the accused, Irfan (28), used to live with the family around five-six years ago but was asked to leave after he allegedly started harassing Nargis. The victim and accused were first cousins, with their mothers being sisters to each other.

Nargis was reportedly killed with an iron rod by Irfan inside a park in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Friday, police said.

Her father Suljat, who works as a motor mechanic, said she was her only daughter. He has two sons. "I want justice for her," he said. "The accused should get strict punishment. We will not forgive him for what he has done."

The accused has been arrested

DCP (South) Chandan Chowdhary said police received a PCR call regarding a murder at the Vijay Mandal Park near Aurobindo College and a woman was found lying on the ground. A chair, an iron rod and a bag were found next to her, police said. Police arrested the accused, identified as Irfan, 28, from his house in Sangam Vihar, around 7- 8 km from where the deceased, Nargis, lived with her family.

Irfan had been working as a delivery agent, police said. “He had written entrance tests to join the Indian Army last year, in which he had failed… he was also preparing for civil services exams,” said the officer.

Sources said Irfan had come on his scooter. He entered through a back entry gate, instead of the main entrance. “Prima facie from the wounds on the victim’s head and face, it seems he beat her up with the road at least three to four times,” said another officer.

Two different stories

Nargis' brother Sameer said, "Around six months ago, our family turned down the marriage proposal of the accused. My sister did not want to marry him."

According to police, Nargis and Irfan were in a relationship earlier and there were also talks about their marriage, but Nargis' family finally disapproved of it.

Nargis then stopped talking to Irfan, which made him even more agitated, police said.

International Tiger Day 2023: International Tiger Day is observed annually on July 29 to raise awareness in the world for tiger conservation. It was first observed in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia. The day aims to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.

International Tiger Day 2023: History

International Tiger Day was established in 2010, at a time when an alarming revelation that 97 per cent of wild tigers had vanished since the beginning of the 20th century surfaced. The 13 tiger range nations banded together to join Tx2, to increase the tiger population from 3,200 to at least 6,000 tigers.

International Tiger Day 2023: Significance

International Tiger Day holds significant importance in raising awareness about the critical issues surrounding tiger conservation. Tigers, classified as endangered in various regions, face grave threats to their existence, such as habitat loss and poaching. Here are some key reasons why this day plays a vital role in advocating for tiger protection:

Curbing illegal wildlife trade

International Tiger Day helps reduce demand for tiger products, contributing to the fight against illegal wildlife trade.

Ecological balance

Tigers serve as top predators in their ecosystems, playing a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance by regulating prey species populations.

Addressing declining population

The day highlights the alarming decline in tiger populations over the past century, emphasizing the urgency to take action to reverse this trend.

Encouraging responsible tourism

India weather: Telangana schools, colleges shut due to heavy rains; state on high alert

The United States has been engulfed by a potentially life-threatening allergy, medically referred to as alpha-gal syndrome (AGS). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 450,000 people in the country may have been affected by AGS, also known as a red-meat allergy or the tick-bite meat allergy.

US scientists have traced alpha-gal to saliva from the lone star tick. The tick is identified by the white spot on its back and is mostly found in the southern and eastern parts of the US. But some experts have warned that their range is expanding due to climate change.

What is alpha-gal syndrome?

Alpha-gal is a sugar found in meat from mammals like pork, rabbit, lamb, etc. It is also found in products made from mammals like gelatin, cow’s milk, milk products and some pharmaceuticals. It is not found in humans or apes.

AGS is a serious allergic condition that some people experience after they consume food or products containing alpha-gal, as per CDC.

Since 2010, more than 110,000 cases have been detected, as per CDC data. From 2017 to 2021, the number of cases increased by around 15,000 per year. The syndrome was not discovered until 2008. The US researchers discovered it by accident while testing a drug used to treat cancer.

The Ixodes holocyclus, aka the paralysis tick, has also caused similar meat allergies in Sydney, Australia.

Symptoms of alpha-gal syndrome

The symptoms of the little-understood syndrome include:

Hives and itchy rash

Nausea or vomiting

Heartburn or indigestion

Diarrhoea or severe stomach pain

Cough

Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing

Drop in blood pressure

Swelling of the lips, throat, tongue, or eyelids

Dizziness or faintness

These symptoms commonly appear 2-6 hours after eating food or other exposure to products containing alpha-gal. Some patients have experienced only stomach symptoms.

The American Gastroenterological Association says people with unexplained diarrhoea, nausea and abdominal pain should be tested for the syndrome.

Current situation in the US

A survey of 1,500 doctors and healthcare workers from last year found that 42 per cent of 450,000 people had never heard of alpha-gal.

The survey, which was also released by the CDC on Thursday, shows about one-third of the group said they were “not too confident” in their ability to identify the disease. Only 5 per cent were “very confident” in their ability.
