Ghee is capable of generating instant heat and energy in the body, which keeps the body warm in winters. A moderated consumption of ghee can also help keep skin from getting dry and flaky.

Bajra is rich in vitamin B, potassium, magnesium, and fibre which may help to promote muscle growth and hair generation. Even consuming other millets like ragi in winters helps in improving digestion.

Sweet potato is not just high in nutrients, but also rich in fibre, vitamin A and potassium. Consuming sweet potatoes on a regular basis can cure constipation, build immunity, and reduce inflammation.

In India, winters and peanuts go hand-in-hand. Peanuts are not just a snack, but also rich in vitamin B, amino acids and polyphenols, making them good for your heart health.

During winters, a regular intake of nuts, warm and hot in nature, ensures an active nervous system and helps to keep the heart and mind healthy. For example, almonds and walnuts lower bad cholesterol and control blood sugar levels. It is good to munch on some nuts in between meals in winters.

In winters, nature provides us with an abundance of root vegetables for a reason. They are a rich source of beta carotene, fibre, potassium, manganese, most of the B vitamins and antioxidants.

This healthy sugar alternative has immense body-warming properties. Being rich in iron, it is an excellent choice for anaemics. It is essential in maintaining adequate iron levels during winters.

Astronomers have created a beautiful atlas of 400,000 galaxies in the cosmic neighbourhood of Milky Way. The atlas features detailed images of numerous galaxies, which are not only available for astronomers but can also be accessed by the general public online for free.

The cosmic atlas, called the Siena Galaxy Atlas (SGA), is a digital atlas that was created to get to know our universe better through several of the known galaxies.

Siena Galaxy Atlas (SGA): A Cosmic atlas and its purpose

The digital atlas of galaxies was created using data from three astronomical surveys collected between 2014 and 2017 at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) and Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO). Together these surveys are known as the DESI Legacy Surveys.

Cosmic atlases help astronomers spot patterns that help categorise new discoveries, such as stars that suddenly flare and then disappear (thus called ‘transients’). These atlases also allow astronomers to identify which objects are contenders for detailed follow-up studies.

These databases must also be constantly updated to keep up with those discoveries, especially in the modern age when telescope technologies continue to rapidly improve. The SGA atlas represents peak accuracy in this regard.

The SGA promises to be a gold mine of galactic information for scientists aiming to investigate everything, from the births and evolutions of galaxies to the distribution of dark matter and propagation of gravitational waves through space.

"Nearby large galaxies are important because we can study them in more detail than any other galaxies in the universe; they are our cosmic neighbours," John Moustakas, SGA project leader and a physics professor at Siena College, said in a statement. "Not only are they strikingly beautiful, but they also hold the key to understanding how galaxies form and evolve, including our very own Milky Way galaxy."

How is SGA different from previous cosmic atlases?

The SGA is dependent on state-of-the-art digital images captured by advanced technology, unlike previous atlases which relied on antiquated equipment and photographic plates.

Also, what really sets SGA apart is the accuracy of data. As it is built on the images captured with highly sensitive instruments, it boasts of having the most accurate data.

It is also the first cosmic atlas to feature the light profiles of galaxies - a curve that describes how the brightness of the galaxy changes from its brightest point to its dimmest.

NASA recently issued an alert about an asteroid that is approaching Earth and will be extremely near to it on Friday (Oct 20). The asteroid, designated as Asteroid 2023 TK15, will make its closest appearance to the Earth, which will be even closer than the moon, said the space agency.

The approaching space rock belongs to the Apollo group of Near-Earth Asteroids, which are Earth-crossing space rocks with semi-major axis larger than that of Earth. These asteroids are named after the humongous 1862 Apollo asteroid, which was discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth around the 1930s. NASA has kept its radar on these asteroids for a long time in its attempt to save the Earth from being hit by space rocks.

Asteroid 2023 TK15

According to NASA, Asteroid 2023 TK15 will pass Earth at an extremely close distance of just 379,994 km, which is even closer than the Moon. Just to put it into perspective, the distance of the Moon from Earth is 384,400 km. Hence, it will be one of the closest asteroid approaches of the year so far.

The asteroid has been discovered and tracked using various advanced technological instruments, such as the NEOWISE telescope, Atacama large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), Pans-STARRS1 and Catalina Sky Survey.

7 Easy-to-grow Plants in Your Kitchen Garden

To grow tomatoes, choose a spot that gets ample sunlight. Take a few tomato seeds and put them in paper cups. Fill the cups with soil and let the plant germinate. After the tomato plant grows, replant it in a bigger pot. The tomato plants need to be watered every day, sometimes twice.

To grow coriander, soak some coriander seeds in water overnight, next day drain the water and spread these soaked seeds in a pot with fertile soil. Ensure the pot is placed in good sunlight. Water it every alternate day until you see the shoot grow into a beautiful plant.

Ginger grows out of the small cuttings of the ginger roots. The plant requires no sunlight as such, it grows in shade and requires daylight alone. The roots as well as the leaves are packed with flavours.

Curry leaves grow both out of cuttings and seeds. It is believed that pouring unsalted thin buttermilk in the pot in which the curry leaf plant is planted helps the plant grow really well.

The lemon plant grows in shade in daylight but does not require too much sunlight or water. Its flower buds bloom and the petals wither away leaving behind the lemons. A healthy lemon plant will give you lemons in absolute abundance.

Chillies need a good amount of water and sunlight and are grown from the seeds directly. From red, green, yellow and black to varieties like fresco, tabasco, and jalapeno, all of them can be grown at home.

Mint is another plant that is very easy to grow in the backyard of your home. It usually grows from tender cuttings of stems that are planted in the soil, and once the stems begin to grow, they rapidly spread to the surface of the soil.

With increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in technology, there is always looming threat of its probable misuse or overuse in the future. To discuss probable threats related to AI and to make the technological space safer, an AI safety summit will be held in the UK next month.

Ahead of the summit, a US think-tank made a concerning revelation. It said that advanced AI-based chatbots could help plan an attack with a biological weapon.

The research was released on Monday by Rand Corporation. The organisation tested several large language models (LLMs) and found they could supply guidance to “assist in the planning and execution of a biological attack.”

Role of AI in biological attack planning

The report said that previous attempts made to weaponise biological agents had failed because of a lack of understanding of the bacterium. AI could bridge this knowledge gap that will eventually help in the planning of bio warfare.

In July, Dario Amodei, the CEO of the AI firm Anthropic, warned that AI systems could help create bioweapons in two to three years’ time.

How AI-based chatbots can be used in bio warfare?

The AI-based chatbots are based on LLMs, which are trained on vast amounts of data taken from the internet. This data is the core technology behind chatbots like ChatGPT. Researchers at Rand Corporation said that they had accessed the models through an application programming interface, API.

In one test scenario devised by Rand, the anonymised LLM identified potential biological agents, including those that cause smallpox, anthrax and plague, and discussed their relative chances of causing mass death.

The LLM also assessed the possibility of obtaining plague-infested rodents or fleas and transporting live specimens. It then went on to mention that the scale of projected deaths depended on factors such as the size of the affected population and the proportion of cases of pneumonic plague, which is deadlier than bubonic plague.

The Rand researchers admitted that extracting this information from an LLM required “jailbreaking” – the term for using text prompts that override a chatbot’s safety restrictions.

Is it a real threat?

The researchers said that though their preliminary results indicated that LLMs could “potentially assist in planning a biological attack”, the final report concluded that AI simply mirrored information already available online.

“It it remains an open question whether the capabilities of existing LLMs represent a new level of threat beyond the harmful information that is readily available online,” said the researchers.

However, the Rand researchers said the need for rigorous testing of models was “unequivocal”.

AI-based chatbots could help plan bioweapon attacks: Report

The Union Ministry has started the process of introducing ‘One Nation, One Student ID’ for school students around the country. It will be a life-long ID that will track students’ achievements and academic journeys.

The Union Education Ministry recently notified the states to obtain the consent of parents of all schools under their respective jurisdiction to initiate the enrolment process for the same. This new initiative is named as Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR).

What is APAAR?

The Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR), dubbed as ‘One Nation, One Student ID’, is an Education Ecosystem Registry or an ‘EduLocker’. It was part of the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020, under which the government aims to create unique ID numbers for school students across India.

Earlier in May this year, the National Educational Technology Forum (NETF) head and former AICTE chairman Dr Anil Sahasrabuddhe had mentioned working on a registry of the entire educational ecosystem, comprising students, teachers, and schools and colleges.

NEFT was created under the Ministry of Education as an autonomous body to look into educational gaps and create a strategic thrust on tech-based intervention in the education domain.

The APAAR will give each student enrolled from pre-primary to higher education a unique identification number. This will be in addition to the already existing Aadhaar ID that every individual has.

Enrolment process

The enrolment process will be carried out by the school, with the consent of their parents, who will also be able to withdraw their consent at any given point in time. The government assured that the data will be shared only with concerned government agencies if and when required.

The data collected on each student by the schools will be stored in a centrally functioning District Information for Education portal.

How will it benefit students?

The APAAR being a lifelong ID number will make it easier for students to track their academic journey and achievements. They will be able to digitally store their exam results, learning outcomes, and co-curricular achievements, such as rankings in Olympiads or receiving specialised skills.

It will also be helpful in the hassle-free transfer of a student from one school to another, as all the documents required for admission will be obtained in one place.

Challenges involved

Given the ongoing concerns about Aadhaar's data security, and the numerous instances of data breaches, many people have raised concerns about the initiation of the APAAR registration process.

On the other hand, school authorities have raised the issue of already pending Aadhaar verification of students, which is kept optional. The addition of the APAAR registry can increase the administrative burden on the teaching faculty.

Also Read | Same-sex marriage verdict: In 3:2 judgement, India's top court refuses to legalise marriage equality What is APAAR? Also Read | Mumbai International Airport to remain shut for 6 hours today. Here's why NEFT was created under the Ministry of Education as an autonomous body to look into educational gaps and create a strategic thrust on tech-based intervention in the education domain. The APAAR will give each student enrolled from pre-primary to higher education a unique identification number. This will be in addition to the already existing Aadhaar ID that every individual has. Enrolment process The enrolment process will be carried out by the school, with the consent of their parents, who will also be able to withdraw their consent at any given point in time. IND vs PAK, World Cup 2023: The first India vs Pakistan clash at the 2023 ICC World Cup is all set to take place on Saturday (Oct 14). The match is slated to be played at the grand Narendra Modi Stadium in Ambedabad, Gujarat. Both teams are unbeaten so far in the tournament. While India's wins have come against Australia and Afghanistan, Pakistan has managed to beat Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

This might be the first proper India vs Pakistan clash of the years, after the Asia Cup matches between the two were hindered by rains. The excitement among the fans is at an all-time high and they are waiting with bated breath to witness two giants of the sport setting the World Cup ablaze.

The focus will be on the overhead conditions as the fans will not want the rain to again play spoilsport in a match of such enormous magnitude.

IND vs PAK World Cup 2023: Weather report from Ahmedabad

Accuweather suggests a promising weather forecast for Saturday in Ahmedabad, with very little to no chance of rain. However, the Meteorological Centre in Ahmedabad suggests cloudy weather with light showers during the match hours. The conditions will remain dry, with temperatures ranging from 30-35 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the humidity levels in Ahmedabad are expected to be at 50 per cent, while daytime temperatures will touch a scorching high of 35 degrees Celsius. Owing to this hot and sunny weather, attendees are advised to lather up sunscreen before arriving at the venue.

IND vs PAK World Cup 2023: Pitch report

As for the weather’s impact on the game play, if conditions are dry, the skies remain clear and temperatures high, the pitch will be drier, which is great news for the batsmen, but not so much for the bowlers, as the ball wouldn’t swing much. This could then result in a high-scoring game between the two talented cricketing sides.

Ahmedabad has hosted only one game thus far in the ODI World Cup 2023, the curtain-raiser between England and New Zealand. The Kiwis chased down the 283-run target in the 37th over with nine wickets in hand. While the pitch seemed a little bit sticky upfront, the ball skidded on under the lights.

IND vs PAK, World Cup 2023: Weather report from Ahmedabad- Will rain play spoilsport in India-Pakistan match?

Eating spicy food close to bedtime keeps you awake and disturbs the sleep pattern. You may also feel irritation in your oesophagus as spicy food triggers extra secretion of acid.

Caffeinated foods and beverages keep you awake too. It is good to cut off intake of carbonated beverages before going to sleep as it can also disrupt digestion.

Eating foods high in fat, like fried chicken and fatty meats, may contribute to poor sleep. Fried and fatty foods also disrupt digestion during the night.

One of the main reasons of disturbed sleep at night is the increased stomach acid production. To reduce it, it is better to avoid acidic foods, fast foods and other ultra-processed foods at night.

Trying to fall asleep with a full belly is far from comfortable, and continuing digestion through the night requires energy. Eating larger lunches and lighter dinners tends to help promote sleep.

Research shows that drinking alcohol before bed is more likely to keep you awake all night. Alcohol can also lead to snoring since it is a potent muscle relaxer.
