Rupert Murdoch, Ann Lesley Smith’s engagement called off in less than a month

Former United States president Donald Trump on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, which are related to the role played by him in the hush-money payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels.

However, the prosecutors in the office of the Manhattan district attorney accused Trump of orchestrating the plan to purchase stories which may damage his reputation and trying to keep them under wraps, hence influencing the 2016 presidential election’s result.

“The defendant, Donald J. Trump, falsified New York business records in order to conceal an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 presidential election,” said Chris Conroy, a prosecutor at Trump’s arraignment.

Generally falsifying business records is treated as a lesser misdemeanour, but Trump is facing the accusation of committing felony offences.

This reflects a more serious crime which can include prison time if he is given the maximum sentence. "At its core, this case today is one with allegations like so many of our white-collar cases," said New York City District Attorney Alvin Bragg, speaking about the charges levied against the former president.

"Allegations that someone lied, again and again, to protect their interests and evade the laws to which we are all held accountable,” he added. Trump, who had pleaded not guilty in the courtroom, insisted that there was nothing to be answered in the case.

What the prosecutors accused Trump of?

The charges can be traced back to $130,000 hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels by Trump’s fixer Michael D. Cohen in the last days of the 2016 campaign. The payment, which Cohen claimed was made by him at the direction of Trump, suppressed the story of Daniels' sexual liaison with Trump.

Later, the money was reimbursed to Cohen by Trump and that’s where the fraud started, claimed prosecutors. The repayment made to Cohen was classified as legal expenses and a retainer agreement was cited in the internal records of Trump’s company.

The prosecutor claimed that there was no such expense and the retainer agreement was also false. The internal data includes 34 counts of falsifying business records - 11 counts included the checks, 11 are based on monthly invoices that were submitted to the company by Cohen, and 12 include entries in the general ledger for Trump’s trust.

The 34 felony counts filed against Donald Trump are related to the payments recorded as legal expenses in the Trump Organisation that had registered the cheques as "legal fees”. However, Cohen confirmed that they were reimbursements for the hush-money payment.

“The payment records, kept and maintained by the Trump Organisation, were false New York business records. In truth, there was no retainer agreement, and Lawyer A was not being paid for legal services rendered in 2017. The Defendant caused his entities' business records to be falsified to disguise his and others' criminal conduct,” the prosecution case stated.

Why is it considered a felony?

Falsifying business records can be seen as a misdemeanour offence. To make it a felony, district attorney Alvin L. Bragg needs to prove Trump’s “intent to defraud” was used to carry out a second crime.

It is still unclear in this case whether Bragg has settled on the specifics of that second crime. In a press conference after Trump’s arraignment, Bragg mentioned various potential underlying crimes, like state election law’s violation that does not allow any conspiracy to promote “the election of a person to public office by unlawful means”.

How did Trump violate the election laws?

In a political campaign’s context, money paid to silence a person’s unflattering information can be seen as a campaign donation. In the federal court of campaign violations, Cohen was convicted because he made a payment worth $130,000 to Daniels which exceeded the legal limit of the donation made by an individual to a political candidate, which is $2,700.

Bragg alleged that since Trump handled the reimbursements made to Cohen, it violated the state election law of New York “which makes it a crime to conspire to promote a candidacy by unlawful means.”

Are prosecutors required to convict Trump of a second crime?

The prosecutors must only prove that Trump had the intent to “commit or conceal” a second crime. Trump doesn’t need to be charged with any second crime, and there is no need to prove that he committed one. However, the prosecutors have not yet revealed what crime or crimes they plan to rely on to elevate the charge to a felony.

What is the maximum sentence if court convicts Trump?

Trump is facing charges that belong to Class E felonies, which fall under the lowest category of felony offence conducted in New York and a person if convicted, can get a prison sentence of a maximum of four years per count, although if Trump is convicted a judge could sentence him to probation.

A radio station run by women in Afghanistan's northeast has been closed because it was playing music during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, said a Taliban official on Saturday.

Sadai Banowan, which means the voice of women in Dari, is the only women-run station in Afghanistan and had started 10 years ago. The radio station has eight staff members, six of them women.

Badakhshan province's Information and Culture Director Moezuddin Ahmadi said the station violated the "laws and regulations of the Islamic Emirate" many times by broadcasting music and songs during the holy month of Ramadan and was closed because they breached the law.

"If this radio station accepts the policy of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and gives a guarantee that it will not repeat such a thing again, we will allow it to operate again," Ahmadi said.

Station head Najia Sorosh refused to accept that they violated the law, stating that there was no need for closing the station and called the whole step a conspiracy. The Taliban "told us that you have broadcast music. We have not broadcast any kind of music," she stated.

A radio station run by women in Afghanistan's northeast has been closed because it was playing music during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, said a Taliban official on Saturday.

Station head Najia Sorosh refused to accept that they violated the law, stating that there was no need for closing the station and called the whole step a conspiracy. The Taliban "told us that you have broadcast music. We have not broadcast any kind of music," she stated. WATCH | American lies: US blames India for its failure in Afghanistan | WION Game Plan Sorosh said that on Thursday representatives from the Vice and Virtue Directorate and the Ministry of Information and Culture arrived at the station at 11:40 am and closed it. She said that the radio station staff have contacted Vice and Virtue but the officials said that they did not have any additional information about the radio station's closing. The Taliban had earlier stopped women from studying in universities and working at NGOs. (With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
Chapters based on the Mughal empire have been chucked out from the history syllabus of Class 12 students studying in CBSE and UP boards of India, as per reports by various media outlets.

The country's top advisory body for Centre and state on school education, NCERT, has reportedly revised the history syllabus and removed the chapters titled 'Kings and Chronicles' and the 'The Mughal Courts' from the medieval History textbooks of CBSE for Class 12, said a top official.

The revised class 12 history textbooks of NCERT will be adopted by the government schools in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in which the chapters on Mughal courts have been reportedly deleted.

Dinesh Prasad Saklani, Director of NCERT strongly denied the claims that chapters on Mughals were dropped.

"It's a lie. (Chapters on) Mughals have not been dropped. There was a rationalisation process last year because due to COVID, there was pressure on students everywhere...Expert committees examined the books from std 6-12. They recommended that if this chapter is dropped, it won't affect the knowledge of the children and an unnecessary burden can be removed...The debate is unnecessary. Those who don't know, can check the textbooks..." he said.

"We are working as per NEP (National Education Policy) 2020. This is a transition phase. NEP 2020 speaks of reducing the content load. We are implementing it. NCF (National Curriculum Framework) for school education is being formed, it will be finalised soon. Textbooks will be printed in 2024 as per NEP. We have not dropped anything right now," he added.

"We teach our students using NCERT books...whatever is there in the revised edition will be followed," said Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.

Additional Chief Secretary (basic and secondary education) Deepak Kumar earlier said, "We follow NCERT books and whatever is available in the revised edition, we will follow it in state schools from 2023-24 session.”

Similarly, chapters like the ‘Central Islamic lands’, ‘Confrontation of cultures’ and ‘The Industrial Revolution’ were also reportedly removed from the history textbook of Class 11 titled ‘Themes In World History'.

Meanwhile, NCERT has also revised class 12 Political Science books, pulling out chapters like 'Rise of Popular Movements', which is about the Socialist and Communist parties' rise in India and 'Era of One-Party Dominance', which talks about the rule of Congress in the post-independence era.

NCERT's senior official said that they will implement the revised syllabus this year (2023-24). Speaking about the changes, Maharishi Patanjali Vidya Mandir's principal Alpona Dey earlier said, “NCERT books are being updated as per the provisions of the new National Education Policy (NEP)-2020. New content is being added by removing topics that have become irrelevant. Changes in the syllabus were made from time to time which was a good thing.”

A lot of these changes in the syllabus were announced in 2022 when CBSE was rationalising its syllabi for students in April.

In a note, the NCERT listed the changes and said, "The content of the textbooks has been rationalised for various reasons, including overlapping with similar content in other subject areas in the same class, similar content included in the lower or higher classes on the same subject.”
