Russian ships still launching strikes, claims Ukraine

Meanwhile, Ukraine has claimed that Russian warships are still launching attacks.

A Ukrainian Navy spokesman said that Russia has continued launching strikes from the Black Sea, comparing the operations to “a chicken running around without a head.”

“At this moment, they (the Russian Navy) lost the person who actually manages all of this, and his staff, who manages the fleet together with him," Dmytro Pletenchuk said on national television.

"This is a large grouping that requires a great number of managers to run all the processes to make it (the fleet) work as a single mechanism. Imagine that the core part of this mechanism becomes inoperable,” said the Ukraine Navy spokesperson, according to a CNN report.

In a shocking incident, a 23-year-old woman in the US killed her mother by stabbing her almost 30 times in the neck and beating her with an iron skillet after the latter found out that the daughter had been expelled from her college, a secret that the accused did not want her to find out.

Sydney Powell of Akron, Ohio, guilty of murder, tampering with evidence and felonious assault in the brutal killing of healthcare worker Brenda Powell, who was 50 years old.

"In March of 2020, Sydney Powell struck Brenda Powell in the head with an iron skillet, then stabbed her nearly 30 times in the neck," said Summit County Prosecutor's Office, in a release.

Powell, who was a former student of Mount Union University, was seen crying in the Summit County Common Pleas courtroom after she was found guilty by the jury, reported The Akron Beacon Journal.

Brenda, 50, was found dead by police on 3 March 2020 inside her Scudder Drive home.

The woman, who was a child life specialist at Akron Children's Hospital, was severely injured. She was immediately rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

She had been attacked by Powell while she was talking to officials from her school on the phone, New York Post reported.

The defence argued that Powell suffered from schizophrenia and hence the court cannot hold her accountable for murder.

'Powell suffered a psychotic break when she killed her mother'

James Reardon, one of the three experts who appeared for the defence who diagnosed Powell's schizophrenia, said she suffered a psychotic break when she killed her mother who she used to consider her best friend.

Sylvia O'Bradovich, the psychologist hired by prosecutors, did not agree with the diagnosis and said Powell failed to meet the legal definition of insanity when the crime was committed.

O'Bradovich said Powell has been suffering from mental health issues, which include malingering, anxiety disorder and borderline personality traits.

Speaking about the incident in court, Assistant Prosecutor Brian Stano said, "Sydney stopped attacking with the pan, presumably went to the kitchen with a knife," according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

"She had to switch weapons and keep attacking her. Just the knife just in the neck multiple times? That is purposeful. That is trying to end someone," Stano added.

The sentencing of Powell has been scheduled for September 28.

US: Woman stabs her mother 30 times for finding her college secret

The House of Representatives, controlled by Republicans, will be trying to advance steep spending cuts this week which appears to have no chance of becoming a law and can lead to the US government's partial shutdown by next Sunday.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy tried to avoid that scenario by attempting to finalise a spending agreement with United States President Joe Biden this spring. However, some members of his own party issued threats of deposing him if he fails to extend support to deeper cuts, which are set to get rejected by the Democratic-dominated Senate.

If Congress fails to provide funding for the new fiscal year, which starts on October 1, thousands of federal workers will be furloughed and multiple services, ranging from medical research to financial oversight, will be suspended.

Generally, Congress misses that deadline and approves stopgap spending bills to avoid disruption in services while they finish their official work.

However, McCarthy so far has not been able to gather support for a temporary spending extension in the wake of the refusal of a group of Republicans to go along. The House is being controlled by Republicans by a narrow 221-212 majority.

The stopgap bill has been put on hold by McCarthy and he will instead advance legislation which reflects conservative priorities.

House to take up four spending bills on Tuesday

On Tuesday when the House returns, four spending bills will be taken up by the lawmakers for the fiscal year ahead, which would place new restrictions on abortion access, resume construction of the Mexico-US border wall and undo a Biden administration climate initiative worth $11 billion.

McCarthy said that the lawmakers, who were against the spending bills last week, are now willing to cooperate. "Apparently they're willing to work now. So we could have an opportunity," he said while speaking to the reporters on Monday (September 25).

The Senate is certain to reject those spending bills, and the White House stated that Biden will veto two of them. McCarthy stated that he thinks the efforts will lead to goodwill and he will be allowed to pass a stopgap which would in turn avoid a shutdown.

However, Representative Matt Gaetz, a prominent antagonist of McCarthy, on Sunday said that he will not support a stopgap, even if it leads to a government shutdown.

"If the departments of Labor and Education have to shut down for a few days as we get their appropriations in line, that's certainly not something that is optimal. But I think it's better than continuing on the current path," he stated while speaking to Fox News.

In a new study, scientists have suggested that an antiviral drug which has been used for treating patients with COVID-19 may have led to mutations in the virus and created its new variants.

Molnupiravir, which is also sold in pharmacies under the brand name Lagevrio, has been designed to destroy coronavirus. However, researchers have discovered evidence that the virus can survive the treatment, sometimes leading to its mutated versions which occasionally spreads to other people.

This antiviral pill of pharmaceutical giant Merck was one of the earliest treatments rolled out amid the pandemic to control the severity of the coronavirus in vulnerable people.

Speaking to AFP, a postdoctoral researcher at the Francis Crick Institute in London and lead author on the study Dr Theo Sanderson said that a new UK-led study shows that molnupiravir "can give rise to significantly mutated viruses which remain viable”.

There has been no evidence which proves that molnupiravir has led to the production of more dangerous variants of coronavirus.

But the scientists stated that the mutations led to an increase in the genetic diversity of the virus in the wild and gave more options for future evolution.

Sanderson, who is a geneticist at Francis Crick Institute, London, stressed that there is no evidence that "molnupiravir has to date created more transmissible or more virulent viruses."

Sanderson, while speaking to the Guardian said, “People have some concerns about molnupiravir and to some sense, this makes those more concrete. We know these viruses can still be alive following a significant number of mutations and they can still be transmissible in some cases.”

The findings of the study are important for scientists to continue assessments of the benefits and risks of molnupiravir as well as other drugs which are in the developing phase and work in a similar pattern, said the researchers.

China’s PLA warns cadres against socialising with ‘wrong people’

A surprise search operation planned by the police's anti-narcotics squad at the house of a suspected drug dealer in southern India turned out into a nightmare after they were confronted by several violent dogs.

It has now emerged that the suspect in Kottayam, Kerala had trained the dogs to bite anyone who was wearing a police uniform.

The search operation on Sunday night (September 23) was hindered by the presence of the dogs which also helped the accused in escaping the police, while the officials focused on avoiding the attacks of the canines.

However, the officials were able to subdue the dogs and seize over 17 kilogrammes of ganja from the site, said the police.

"The accused had imparted training to the dogs to bite on seeing khaki [the common police uniform colour in India]," a senior police official said.

"He had been briefly trained in dog handling by a person retired from the BSF [Border Security Force], but was kicked out from there for asking questions like how to make dogs bite someone wearing khaki," SP K Karthick IPS told reporters.

He said it was almost midnight when the anti-narcotics squad, along with the officers from the nearby Gandhinagar police station, reached the location, Kottayam.

"We did not expect there would be so many dogs here and that they would be violent. So, we faced difficulty initially in carrying out a proper search. Fortunately, none of the officers were injured," said the police official.

Police to hand back 13 dogs to their owners

The district police's top officer further said that the accused, who was living under the guise of a dog trainer, was a drug seller and the same was proved after they seized more than 17 kgs of ganja from the site.

"According to our preliminary investigation, he (the accused) was living here on rent and was known to everyone in the area as a dog trainer. Therefore, people used to leave their dogs with him, at the rate of ₹ 1,000 per day, when they went outside and he would look after the canines," Karthick said.

At present, around 13 dogs are present at the site and after their owners have been identified, the police will hand over the canines to them.

India: Drug dealer trained dogs to bite people in police uniform during raids

Ukraine on Monday (September 25) claimed to have killed the Commander of Russia's Black Sea fleet Viktor Sokolov in a missile strike on the Russian naval headquarters in the annexed Crimean peninsula. The killing, if true, is a major blow for Moscow which has faced several attacks on the strategically significant port of Sevastopol in recent months.

"Thirty-four officers were killed, including the commander of the Black Sea fleet. Another 105 occupiers were wounded" in the attack last week, said Ukraine's special forces.

"The headquarters are beyond repair," it said in a statement on social media.

Last Friday, plumes of black smoke were seen billowing from the building under attack in central Sevastopol, Crimea's largest city. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

In the image shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Sun is shown crossing the celestial equator in the sky because of which autumn is coming to the Northern Hemisphere.

Posting the picture, the space agency wrote, "Winter is coming. According to Space.com, astronomically autumn began in the Northern Hemisphere and spring ushered in the Southern Hemisphere.

"The sun is currently migrating south, having spent the previous six months shining directly on the northern half of our planet. So, at the official start time of autumn, the sun would appear directly overhead from a ship in the Laccadive Sea, positioned on the equator, 170 miles (275 kilometres) northeast of Addu City in the Maldives," said the website.

The axis of the Earth is tilted either towards or away from the sun for the maximum time of the year. This means that the northern and southern portions of the planet receive different amounts of light and warmth from the sun.

The axis and orbit of the Earth align at the equinox, which equally distributes sunlight to both hemispheres.

The word equinox is made up of two Latin words which signify equal and night. This is because of the fact that day and night are nearly equal in length on the equinox.

However, one may experience it for a few extra minutes depending on where they are on the planet.

Russia places ICC president on wanted list amid allegations it tortured Ukrainians to death

As COVID-19 has turned into a recurring and familiar health issue, healthcare professionals in the United Kingdom are now preparing for a potential new pandemic called "Disease X." The healthcare experts have issued a caution that the new virus can be as devastating as was the Spanish Flu of 1918-1920.

Health experts are now sounding the alarm around "Disease X," after the World Health Organization coined the term. The experts have issued a warning that this potential new pandemic can lead to 20 times more fatalities compared to the coronavirus.

In 2020, the world saw the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic which tragically claimed the lives of more than 2.5 million people worldwide.

Speaking to the Daily Mail Kate Bingham, who was chairperson of the UK's Vaccine Taskforce from May to December 2020, said that she believed Disease X can turn out to be considerably more perilous than COVID-19.

Disease X can lead to 50 million fatalities

Based on estimates by experts, Disease X carries the potential to lead to around 50 million fatalities. "Let me put it this way: the 1918-19 flu pandemic killed at least 50 million people worldwide, twice as many as were killed in World War I. Today, we could expect a similar death toll from one of the many viruses that already exist," she said while speaking to the Daily Mail.

Bingham emphasised that “the world will have to prepare for mass vaccination drives and deliver the doses in record time."

She stated that although 25 virus families were identified by the scientists encompassing thousands of individual viruses, she feels that experts need to discover millions of viruses as of yet and they carry the potential to evolve into pandemics.

"In a sense, we got lucky with COVID-19, despite the fact that it caused 20 million or more deaths across the world. The point is that the vast majority of people infected with the virus managed to recover. Imagine Disease X is as infectious as measles with the fatality rate of Ebola [67%]. Somewhere in the world, it's replicating, and sooner or later, somebody will start feeling sick," Bingham said.

As per Bingham, the increase in outbreaks can be attributed to the growing trend of more people gathering in urban areas. She further emphasised that the increase has also taken place because of the continual destruction of millions of acres of natural habitat every year.

"This reason is particularly important because around three-quarters of emerging infectious diseases originate in animals and then leap from species to species until they can, in certain circumstances, infect human beings," she said.

According to her, one of the initial actions required is to allocate the necessary financial resources, which mainly means putting "the money on the table." " The monetary cost of inaction is seismic. After all, even Covid-19 - a milder virus than Disease X - managed to leave us holding a bill for $16 trillion in both lost output and public health expenditure," Bingham said.

The healthcare experts have issued a caution that the new virus can be as devastating as was the Spanish Flu of 1918-1920. "Let me put it this way: the 1918-19 flu pandemic killed at least 50 million people worldwide, twice as many as were killed in World War I. Today, we could expect a similar death toll from one of the many viruses that already exist," she said while speaking to the Daily Mail. Bingham emphasised that “the world will have to prepare for mass vaccination drives and deliver the doses in record time." She stated that although 25 virus families were identified by the scientists encompassing thousands of individual viruses, she feels that experts need to discover millions of viruses as of yet and they carry the potential to evolve into pandemics. WATCH | Gravitas | Another deadly bat virus is here: Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala, should you be scared? 'Disease X' likely to prove 20 times deadlier compared to COVID-19, hints expert

The prosecutor general of Libya on Monday (September 25) gave orders for the arrest of eight officials, which included the mayor of Derna, as part of his inquiry into the recent floods in which thousands were killed.

The flash flood, which according to witnesses appeared like a tsunami, broke two dams on September 10 after the area around the port city of Derna was lashed by a hurricane-strength storm.

The officials have been suspected of negligence and "bad management", said the prosecutor general's office in a statement, adding that they worked previously or currently in offices which are responsible for dam management and water resources.

The official death toll due to floods crossed 3,800 on Saturday and international aid groups stated that 10,000 or more people are feared to be missing.

After starting an investigation, Libya's prosecutor general Al-Seddik al-Sur said that there were cracks in the two dams, upstream from Derna, since 1998.

The repair work, which was started by a Turkish company in 2010, was suspended after some months when Libya's 2011 revolution flared. After this, the dam's repair work never resumed, said the prosecutor on September 16, as he vowed to firmly deal with those responsible.

Collapse of dams

In the disaster, the first dam which collapsed was the Abu Mansur dam, which is 13 kilometres (eight miles) from Derna and whose reservoir contained 22.5 million cubic metres (nearly 800 million cubic feet) of water.

The second dam which broke in the deluge was Al Biladm which had a capacity of 1.5 million cubic metres and was only a kilometre away from the coastal city.

The debris and flooding water swept through the normally dry riverbed or wadi which cuts through the city centre.

A Yugoslav company had constructed both dams in the 1970s, "not to collect water but to protect Derna from floods", Sour stated earlier.

After Libya's 2011 revolution, the government allocated a budget every year to repair the two dams, however, the repair work was not undertaken by any of the successive governments, as per an official.

In a 2021 report prepared by the Libyan audit bureau, officials slammed "procrastination" on the resumption of repair work at the two dams.
