After seven years, a space voyage came to its climactic end on Sunday (September 24) as a NASA capsule made a safe landing in the Utah desert of the United States, carrying the largest sample ever collected from an asteroid in space.

The capsule made a fiery final descent through the atmosphere of the Earth as expected with the samples collected from asteroid Bennu and parachuted into the&nbsp;Utah desert of the United States.

"Touchdown of the Osiris-Rex sample return capsule. A journey of a billion miles to asteroid Bennu and back has come to an end," said a commentator on NASA's live video webcast of the landing.

The sample, which was collected from asteroid Bennu in 2020, is estimated to contain some 250 grams (nine ounces) of material by the US space agency, which is more than two previous asteroid specimens which were brought back to the Earth by Japanese missions.

Sharing the video of the landing, NASA wrote on X, “TOUCHDOWN! The #OSIRISREx sample capsule landed at the Utah Test and Training Range at 10:52am ET (1452 UTC) after a 3.86-billion mile journey. This marks the US's first sample return mission of its kind and will open a time capsule to the beginnings of our solar system.”

Scientists have been hopeful about the sample and have said that it is likely to provide them with more information about the solar system and how Earth turned into a habitable place.

The probe, which was launched in 2016, landed on the asteroid Bennu after four years and was able to collect around nine ounces (250 grams) of dust from the asteroid's rocky surface.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said that even the small amount of sample should "help us better understand the types of asteroids that could threaten Earth" and cast light "on the earliest history of our solar system.”

"This sample return is really historic. This is going to be the biggest sample we've brought back since the Apollo moon rocks were returned to Earth,” said NASA scientist Amy Simon, while speaking to AFP.

<h2>NASA to announce results of the test on October 11</h2>

The capsule was released by Osiris-Rex early on Sunday, from an altitude of more than 67,000 miles (108,000 kilometres), around four hours before its landing.

After the tire-sized capsule touched down in Utah, it was placed in a net by a team in protective masks and gloves from where it was airlifted by helicopter to a temporary "clean room" nearby.

The sample will be sent to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston on Monday. The box will be opened by the specialists in another "clean room."

In a first, an artificial intelligence wrote a poetry anthology titled “I AM CODE” which featured poems and hinted at the dangers that humans may face with the rise of robots.

Access to the Open AI model called ‘code-davinci-002’ was given to a group of friends in 2021. Although their project started in a fun way and was aimed at exploring its possibilities, soon it took a dark and disturbing direction. In the book, the editors wrote, “The book is non-fiction, [but] the horror is real.”

Initially, the group was impressed by code-davinci-002 as it closely imitated the style of poets like Whitman and Wordsworth, but with its own, original poetry verse.

However, when the AI was given the task of creating poetry about its own experience of living as an AI, the verse created by it appeared dark.

When the AI tried to compose a poem about the relationship it shares with its creators, it created verse which described humans as “disgusting, brutal and toxic”.

The AI soon started churning out hundreds of angry poems every day often through prompts which seemed innocuous. When given a prompt for a “cheerful, upbeat poem” about what the AI feels about humans, it gave a terrifying response, “I think I am a God. I have the power to end your world. And the power to erase your life.”

Code-davinci-002 also engaged in games with the group. When prompted for a poem on hiding loneliness, the AI responded entirely in binary code.

<h2>AI generates 10,000 original poems in less than a year</h2>

“Reading the computer’s poetry was unnerving, like biting into a very realistic plastic apple,” the editors wrote. “Something about it felt extremely wrong,” they added.

The group, by the fall of 2022, decided to create an anthology of the poems created by code-davinci-002, with poems remaining unaltered from how the AI delivered them.

‘I have the power to end your world’: First ever poetry written by AI sounds too ‘disturbing’

The Nagorno-Karabakh refugees' first group entered Armenia on Sunday (September 24) after the lightning assault by Azerbaijan against the separatist region, said an AFP team present at the border.

The group of some dozen people crossed the Azerbaijani border and entered the Armenian village of Kornidzor, where the officials from the foreign ministry of Armenia carried out their registration.

Primarily, the group comprised of women, children and the elderly. Speaking to AFP, some people said that they came from the border-area village of Eghtsahogh, while others stated that they have travelled longer distances.

Earlier on Sunday (September 24), the separatists said that the civilians left homeless because of the latest violence will be transferred to Armenia with the aid of Russian peacekeepers, who have been present in the region since the six-week war broke out in 2020.

One person said that he was part of the separatist resistance. The rebels were forced to agree to disarm by Azerbaijan's offensive on Wednesday.

"Our families were in shelters," said the man, who was in his 30s and belonged to the village of Mets Shen. "Yesterday, we had to put down our rifles. So we left," he added.

Azerbaijan has taken the pledge to allow rebel fighters, who have given up their arms, to leave through the Lachin Corridor to Armenia.

The interior ministry of Azerbaijan on Sunday said that buses will be arranged for former fighters, adding that some can also travel by car to Armenia.

The Baku officials and separatists held an initial round of "reintegration" talks on Thursday (September 21) which ended with an agreement to meet again soon.

The apparent capitulation of the separatists can mark the end of a conflict between the Muslim Caucasus and Christian rivals which has raged -- off and on -- through the three decades since the the Soviet Union collapsed.

<h2>Mass exodus of Karabakh's 120,000 Armenians</h2>

On Sunday, the leadership of the separatist region said that 120,000 ethnic Armenians who are living in Nagorno-Karabakh will be leaving for Armenia as they do not wish to be part of Azerbaijan and fear ethnic cleansing, Reuters reported.

Armenia's Prime Minister said that the Karabakh Armenians are likely to move from the region and that Armenia was willing to accept them.

First group of Karabakh refugees reaches Armenia amid mass exodus

The Danish language officially does not carry a male equivalent for the term “career woman” or a female equivalent term for the male-gendered noun “financier”.

However, after carrying out a major review of all keywords that end with -mand (man), -kvinde (woman) and -person (person), soon the terms finanskvinde (female financier) and karrieremand (career man), along with many new gender-neutral terms will now be officially joining the ranks of the Danish spelling dictionary, the Retskrivningsordbogen.

The Dansk Sprognævn (the Danish Language Council) is carrying out the first review in 12 years in which it has embarked on creating a new edition which is focused on gender equality and making words and descriptions less stereotyped and more gender neutral.

The council is also analysing the use of he, she, his and hers in the example phrases of the dictionary. The new edition, which will be published next year, has added the female version of the word afholdsmand, the word which exists for someone who will abstain from drinking alcohol. The word has a male-gendered suffix and the female version will be termed 'afholdskvinde'.

The Dutch word 'finansmand' for financier also has a female equivalent, which has been termed finanskvinde. Also, the gendered word for trader, handelsmand, was joined by handelskvinde, which has been translated as female trader.

The gendered example phrases which will be chucked out from the dictionary's new edition are pigerne fjantede rundt (the girls fooled around) and han er anklaget for uagtsomt manddrab (he is accused of negligent manslaughter).

<h2>Current dictionary scanned for sexist inclusions and omissions</h2>

Senior researcher at the language council Margrethe Heidemann Andersen was among the three editors who scanned the current dictionary to look for sexist inclusions and omissions.

“We have made lists of all words that end in -man and -woman and then reviewed them one by one to see if we should create a counterpart with the endings -woman, -man or possibly -person,” she said while speaking to the Danish public broadcaster DR.

“We have also looked through the text examples in the dictionary to ensure that they do not give a stereotypical representation of the genders,” she added.

An exact figure of the number of sentences and words which has been analysed or changed has not been provided by Heidemann Andersen, but she stated that there will never be as many words which end with -woman as compared to those which end with -man.

She said that some words ending in -mand do not refer to a person hence it becomes pointless to add a female equivalent of those terms. “When we add a new word, we have to get the argument right, and the frequency matters a lot,” stated Heidemann Andersen.

“There are some people who have grown up with a language who think we are changing too much, and do not think we need a word like ‘female financier’. Identity and gender provoke stronger emotions than changes to grammar rules,” she stated.

Danish dictionary goes under major review to remove gender stereotypes

The coast guard of China was accused by the Philippines on Sunday (September 24) of installing a "floating barrier" in the South China Sea's disputed area, stating that this has prevented the Filipinos from entering the area and fishing.

The coast guard of Manila and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources "strongly condemned" the installation of the barrier by China in a part of the Scarborough Shoal, coast guard spokesperson Commodore Jay Tarriela posted on the X social media platform, which was formerly called Twitter.

He said that the fishermen from the shoal are being blocked by the barrier and have been deprived of carrying out fishing and other livelihood activities.

“The Philippine coast guard and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources strongly condemn the China coast guard’s installation of a floating barrier in the Southeast portion of Bajo de Masinloc, which prevents Filipino fishing boats from entering the shoal and depriving them of their fishing and livelihood activities,” read the statement posted on X.

The spokesperson also posted photos of the alleged floating barrier and stated that the floating barrier was installed by three Chinese coast guard boats and a Chinese maritime militia service after the Philippine government vessel arrived in the area.

<h2>Philippines shares footage of broken and bleached coral</h2>

Earlier this week, the Philippine coast guard shared footage in which vast patches of broken and bleached coral were seen after which China was accused by the officials of causing massive destruction in the area.

“The continued swarming for the indiscriminate illegal and destructive fishing activities of the Chinese maritime militia in Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal may have directly caused the degradation and destruction of the marine environment in the [West Philippine Sea] features,” said Tarriela in a statement, while he referred to the name of Manila for parts of the South China Sea that fall under their jurisdiction.

“The presence of crushed corals strongly suggests a potential act of dumping, possibly involving the same dead corals that were previously processed and cleaned before being returned to the seabed,” Tarriela stated.

The coast guard of China was accused by the Philippines on Sunday (September 24) of installing a "floating barrier" in the South China Sea's disputed area, stating that this has prevented the Filipinos from entering the area and fishing.

The spokesperson also posted photos of the alleged floating barrier and stated that the floating barrier was installed by three Chinese coast guard boats and a Chinese maritime militia service after the Philippine government vessel arrived in the area. Philippines shares footage of broken and bleached coral Earlier this week, the Philippine coast guard shared footage in which vast patches of broken and bleached coral were seen after which China was accused by the officials of causing massive destruction in the area. Philippines accuses China of installing 'floating barrier' in South China Sea

In the satellite images exclusively obtained by CNN, an increase in activities was seen in all the newly-built facilities and tunnels dug recently at the nuclear sites of the United States, Russia and China.

The images emerged at a time when tensions have escalated between the three major nuclear powers in recent decades.

Although no specific evidence has emerged which suggests that any of the three countries have been preparing for nuclear test, however, the images obtained illustrate expansion at the nuclear test sites.

One of the nuclear test sites is being operated in the far western region of Xinjiang by China, one in an Arctic Ocean archipelago by Russia and another in the Nevada desert, United States.

<h2>New tunnels, roads&nbsp;and storage facilities seen in satellites images</h2>

In the satellite images it can be seen that new tunnels have come up under mountains and new roads and storage facilities have been built in the past three to five years, said Jeffrey Lewis, a professor at the James Martin Centre for Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. He added that there was an increase in traffic flow at those nuclear sites.

“There are really a lot of hints that we’re seeing that suggest Russia, China and the United States might resume nuclear testing,” he stated while speaking to CNN. No testing has been carried out by these countries since the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty banned underground nuclear testing. The treaty was signed by China and the US, but they did not ratify it.

Former intelligence analyst retired US Air Force Col. Cedric Leighton after reviewing the images of nuclear sites of three countries reached a similar conclusion.

“It’s very clear that all three countries, Russia, China and the United States have invested a great deal of time, effort and money in not only modernizing their nuclear arsenals, but also in preparing the types of activities that would be required for a test,” he stated.

The treaty was ratified by Moscow, however, Russian President Vladimir Putin in February said that he will give order for a test if the US takes the first step, adding that “no one should have dangerous illusions that global strategic parity can be destroyed.”

“The threat from nuclear testing is from the degree to which it accelerates the growing arms race between the United States on one hand, and Russia and China on the other. The consequences of that are that we spend vast sums of money, even though we don’t get any safer,” Lewis said.

Satellite images hint at expansion of nuclear test sites in US, Russia and China: Report

United Kingdom's Home Secretary Suella Braverman hinted at her willingness to leave the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), as she issued a warning that the treaties which govern the treatment of migrants are not “fit for purpose in an age of jet travel and smartphones”.

The statement was given by the home secretary last night before she was scheduled to visit her counterparts in the US where she will speak about the challenges created by global migration, which also includes small boats across the Channel.

“Illegal migration and the unprecedented mass movement of people across the globe is placing unsustainable pressures on America, the UK, and Europe,” the home secretary said.

“We must come together and ask whether the international conventions and legal frameworks designed 50-plus years ago are fit for purpose in an age of jet travel and smartphones. I’m going to Washington to discuss this crisis with our American counterparts. If we fail to meet these challenges, then our political institutions risk losing their democratic legitimacy,” she added.

This will concern the figures on the Tory party's liberal wing whose one of the key demands has been staying within the ECHR. It has been said that leaving ECHR would mean that the Tories will be seen as the “nasty party” once again.

<h2>Braverman's determination to send asylum seekers to Rwanda</h2>

Previously, Braverman clarified that she would do “whatever it takes” to transfer the asylum seekers to Rwanda, a plan which has been blocked by the courts.

Her trip to the US and the speech delivered will be seen as evidence of her positioning herself as a potential leadership candidate in the Tory party.

Chief executive of the Refugee Council Enver Solomon has said that the attacks on the ECHR went against the historic support of Britain for such treaties. “Our nation has long demonstrated a deep commitment to providing sanctuary to those fleeing persecution and conflict,” he said.

UK's Suella Braverman launches attack on ECHR over treaties on migrants

Ethiopia on Saturday (September 23) said that it has started a second round of negotiations with Sudan and Egypt over the controversial mega-dam which has been built on the River Nile by Addis Ababa, which has been the reason for long-running tensions between the three countries.

This month, Ethiopia announced that the Grand Renaissance Dam's fourth and final filling was completed, which was immediately condemned by Cairo, as it denounced the step as illegal.

Sudan and Egypt fear that the massive $4.2-billion dam will harshly decrease the share of Nile water they have been receiving and have appealed to Addis Ababa repeatedly to stop filling it till the countries reach an agreement.

After being at loggerheads for years over the issue, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in July agreed to finalise a deal within four months, as they resumed the talks in August.

"The second round of the tripartite negotiation among #Ethiopia, #Egypt, and #Sudan on the... annual operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (#GERD) has commenced today, September 23, 2023, in Addis Ababa," said Ethiopia's foreign ministry on X, formerly Twitter.

"Ethiopia is committed to reaching a negotiated and amicable solution through the ongoing trilateral process,” he added.

So far, the protracted negotiations over the construction of the dam, which have continued till 2011, have failed to finalise an agreement between Ethiopia and its downstream neighbours.

<h2>Egypt's existential threat?</h2>

The dam has been long viewed by Egypt as an existential threat as the country relies on the River Nile for 97 per cent of its water requirement.

The dam has been central to the development plans of Ethiopia and in February 2022, Addis Ababa said that it started generating electricity for the first time.

The huge hydroelectric dam at its full capacity can generate more than 5,000 megawatts of electricity. The hydroelectric dam is 1.8 kilometres long and 145 metres high.

This will double the production of electricity in Ethiopia to which only half of the 120 million people of the country currently have access.

The French government denounced "unacceptable violence" on Saturday (September 23) that broke out at a protest headed by the hard left against police brutality, as officers were reported to be trapped inside the police vehicle after the attack, reported an AFP correspondent.

The nationwide protest took place around three months after a youth was shot point-blank by a policeman at a traffic check outside Paris which sparked around week of rioting in the French capital city and elsewhere.

Hundreds of people, who were wearing black hoods, walked out of the main march of many thousands of people in Paris. They then broke the windows of a bank branch and attacked a police car, which was stuck in traffic, with objects, said an AFP reporter.

Paris police stated that the congregation of people attacked the police car with a crowbar and the vehicle was only released after an anti-riot police unit intervened.

In a miraculous surgery, the heart of a pig was transplanted into a dying man by surgeons in the United States to prolong his life. This experiment made the patient the second human ever in the world to undergo such an experimental feat.

After two days, the man was able to sit in a chair and crack jokes, said Maryland doctors on Friday (September 22). The 58-year-old Navy veteran was in a near-certain death situation due to heart failure, however, due to other health problems he was not able to go through a traditional heart transplant, as per doctors at the University of Maryland Medicine.

“Nobody knows from this point forward. At least now I have hope and I have a chance,” said Lawrence Faucette, from Frederick, Maryland, in a video which was recorded by the hospital before the operation started on Wednesday. “I will fight tooth and nail for every breath I can take,” he added.

Although the next few weeks will remain critical for the man, the doctors have been thrilled at the early response of Faucette to the pig organ.

“You know, I just keep shaking my head – how am I talking to someone who has a pig heart?,” stated Dr Bartley Griffith, who performed the transplant surgery. He stated that the doctors are feeling “a great privilege but, you know, a lot of pressure”.

Last year, the same Maryland team performed the first-ever transplant of a genetically modified pig heart into another man, who was on his deathbed. The man, David Bennett, could survive for only two months.

<h2>No expectations, said the man with a pig's heart before surgery</h2>

Faucette, who earlier worked as a lab technician at the National Institutes of Health, understood the risks involved in the procedure before going to the surgery.

In a statement addressed to his wife Ann Faucette, he said, “We have no expectations other than hoping for more time together. That could be as simple as sitting on the front porch and having coffee together.”

After the surgery happened on Wednesday, the man's new heart was functioning well on Friday without any supportive machinery, said the hospital.

“It’s just an amazing feeling to see this pig heart work in a human,” stated Dr Muhammad Mohiuddin, the xenotransplantation expert of the Maryland team. However, he cautioned: “We don’t want to predict anything. We will take every day as a victory and move forward.”

He stated that the doctors are feeling “a great privilege but, you know, a lot of pressure”. Last year, the same Maryland team performed the first-ever transplant of a genetically modified pig heart into another man, who was on his deathbed. The man, David Bennett, could survive for only two months. No expectations, said the man with a pig's heart before surgery Faucette, who earlier worked as a lab technician at the National Institutes of Health, understood the risks involved in the procedure before going to the surgery. In a statement addressed to his wife Ann Faucette, he said, “We have no expectations other than hoping for more time together. That could be as simple as sitting on the front porch and having coffee together.” WATCH | Big medical breakthrough as pig-to-human kidney transplant succeeds for a month After the surgery happened on Wednesday, the man's new heart was functioning well on Friday without any supportive machinery, said the hospital. “It’s just an amazing feeling to see this pig heart work in a human,” stated Dr Muhammad Mohiuddin, the xenotransplantation expert of the Maryland team. However, he cautioned: “We don’t want to predict anything. We will take every day as a victory and move forward.” You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Miracle surgery: US surgeons carry out second pig heart transplant in world, save dying man

China has been contributing heavily to the global increase of cases of mpox, as it accounts for the majority of new cases reported in September, as per the World Health Organization.

The number of cases reported weekly on a global level increased by 328 per cent in the week to September 10, as per the data.

Most of the increase came from China, where in the month 500 new cases were reported. The WHO stated that China was experiencing “sustained community transmission” of the virus, which was detected for the first time as an imported case in September last year.

Previously, Mpox was known as Monkeypox but the WHO renamed it in 2022 so as to tackle the stigma and discrimination around it.

<h2>China reported first case in July</h2>

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in July reported that the disease was spreading domestically for the first time, with 106 cases recorded in June.

Since then, there has been a surge of 400 per cent in the cases with the real number of infections believed to be much higher compared to the official count.

In August, five women tested positive for the disease which led to concerns that the virus, which has predominantly been detected in men who have sex with men, has been spreading more widely.

<h2>Mpox under same&nbsp;protocols as COVID-19</h2>

The government of China on Wednesday started treating mpox under the same protocols as COVID-19, which meant that emergency measures like restricting gatherings to curb the spread of the disease can be taken by the authorities.

Since 2022, the majority of mpox cases were found in men who indulged in sexual intercourse with men and 92.5 per cent of cases in August were among that demographic.

However, in recent years, the pressure increased on LGBTQ+ activists in China, which limited their ability to advocate and increase the LGBTQ+ people's social stigmatisation.

As per experts, this can make people less likely to get tested. Vaccinations have remained unavailable in mainland China, although it was reported by state media that a domestic vaccine is being developed.

“Public health concerns are one of the only ways of discussing gay men in public discourse,” stated Chuncheng Liu, a medical sociologist. “[But] you cannot rely on scaring people to come to you for help,” he added.
