Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the late Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's former aide the task of overseeing volunteer fighter units in Ukraine, as per a statement issued by the Kremlin on Friday (Sep 28).

Prigozhin was killed in August in an air crash which was suspected to have been orchestrated by Putin after the failed Wagner mutiny in June.

"At the last meeting, we talked about you overseeing the formation of volunteer units that can carry out various tasks, first and foremost of course in the zone of the special military operation," the Russian president was quoted as saying to Andrei Troshev.

The meeting, which was also attended by Deputy Defence Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, emphasised the integration of the mercenary group's fighters into the regular military of Russia in the wake of the aborted mutiny.

Prigozhin was killed along with nine other people when a plane, which took off from Moscow and was headed to Saint Petersburg, crashed on August 23.

As per the experts, the Wagner mutiny was the most significant challenge to the rule of Putin.

The rebellion was called off by Prigozhin after he apparently finalised a deal with the Kremlin through the mediation of Belarus, after which he faced no criminal prosecution.

Putin gives task of managing Ukraine volunteer fighters to ex-Prigozhin aide

India is on the threshold of completing a major project which will provide the country with an alternative route to the remote but Indian Army's strategically important outpost near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), said the top officials on Thursday (Sep 28) as reported by the Hindustan Times.

The new road, which will connect India’s northernmost military base Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO), will allow the movement of weapons, logistics and soldiers for reinforcements on the front lines.

As reported, the new road is not visible from across the LAC, which is an advantage that the only existing road to DBO from Darbuk does not have. Also, since the road is far away from the LAC it will remain less vulnerable to any attack launched from across the LAC.

An official said that the road will be ready by November-end to support critical military movement and should be fully blacktopped in a year, reported the Hindustan Times. More than 2000 people have been working towards meeting the deadline.

The construction of the 130km long road, which runs from Sasoma in the Nubra Valley to DBO near the Karakoram Pass, is in its final phase. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is required to finish a stretch in steep glaciated terrain and it will be constructing a bridge on the Shyok River.

<h2>BRO places road under Hardness Index-III, classifies it as tough project</h2>

An official told the Hindustan Times that they are using the latest technologies to remove “construction hurdles in the final lap”. The road has been placed under Hardness Index-III, which is the top-most classification of BRO for tough projects.

The existing Darbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldi (DS-DBO) road, which is 255km long, runs near the LAC. Darbuk and Sasoma are accessible from Leh via two different road axes.

The officials further confirmed that various key sections of the Sasoma-Saser La-Saser Brangsa-Gapshan-DBO road were completed.

Former Northern Army commander Lieutenant General DS Hooda (retd), told HT that ‘Sub Sector North’, which consists of Karakoram Pass, Depsang plains and the DBO landing ground, is a strategically important area.

“The DS-DBO road leading to this area runs close and parallel to the LAC for much of its length north of Galwan. It could be interdicted during operations, cutting off support to troops in this sector. An alternative route via Nubra Valley and over Saser La provides a safer road that cannot be easily interfered with. Constructing a road over the glaciated region of Saser La was a huge challenge and BRO should be complimented for overcoming this,” Hooda stated.

India lays down new road to Daulat Beg Oldi, secures key point at LAC

Researchers on Thursday (Sep 28) said that they have discovered remnants of DNA in fossilised remains of a sea turtle, which dates back to 6 million years ago and is closely related to Kemp's ridley and olive ridley turtles of today.

This is a rare occurrence of genetic material getting identified in such old fossils of a vertebrate. The researchers stated that some bone cells, known as osteocytes, were preserved exquisitely in the fossil, which was excavated along the Caribbean coast of Panama in 2015.

The fossil is partial and has a relatively complete carapace, the shell of a turtle. However, the rest of the skeleton is missing. The researchers estimated that the turtle would have been around a foot (30 cm) long, when alive.

Palaeontologist Edwin Cadena, the lead author of the study published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, said that in a few osteocytes, the cell nuclei remained preserved and reacted to a chemical solution which helped the researchers recognise the presence of remnants of DNA.

DNA contains genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism.

"I want to point out that we did not extract DNA, we only were able to recognise the presence of DNA traces in the nuclei," stated Cadena, of Universidad del Rosario in Bogota and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

DNA generally perishes although it has remained preserved in some ancient remains which were kept in the right conditions. Last year, the researchers reported the DNA discovery from plants and microbes, which dated back to about 2 million years ago, from sediment at the remote northernmost point in Greenland.

Cadena stated that the only older vertebrate fossils, apart from the one of turtle to have been found with similar DNA remnants, were of two dinosaurs - Brachylophosaurus, which lived about 78 million years ago, and Tyrannosaurus, which lived about 66 million years ago.

<h2>DNA remnants also found in insects</h2>

Cadena stated that DNA remnants were also reported in insects which dated back to tens of millions of years ago.

The turtle belongs to the same genus, Lepidochelys, as two of the seven living species of sea turtles in the world - the olive ridley and the world's smallest sea turtle - the Kemp's ridley, said Cadena.

Kemp's ridley, which has a slightly hooked beak and a triangular-shaped head, is primarily found in the Gulf of Mexico. The olive ridley, which looks like Kemp's ridley, has a larger distribution and is generally found in the tropical regions of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans.

"Each fossil site has specific conditions of preservation that in some cases could have favoured preservation of original biomolecular remains such as proteins and DNA," Cadena stated.

"Maybe in the future and with more studies of this kind, we could be able at some point to sequence very small pieces of DNA and to infer things about their close relatives or involve that information in a broader molecular evolutionary study," added Cadena.

Researchers find DNA remains in 6 million-year-old turtle's fossil

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella is expected to testify on Monday as a witness for the U.S. Justice Department, according to a filing on the docket of its once-in-a generation court fight against Alphabet's Google.

The government is likely to ask Nadella about Microsoft's efforts to expand the reach of Edge and Bing, its browser and search engine, and the obstacles posed by Google's dominance. Google will likely argue that the better quality of its products are the reason for its success rather than illegal behaviour.

The government has argued that Google, which has some 90% of the search market, illegally paid $10 billion annually to smartphone makers like Apple and wireless carriers like AT&amp;T and others to be the default in search on their devices in order to stay on top.

The clout in search makes Google a heavy hitter in the lucrative advertising market, boosting its profits.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella set to testify against Google in antitrust trial

UN&nbsp;human rights experts have called for major reforms of the US&nbsp;criminal justice system to combat systemic racism, citing testimonies that jailed Black women had been shackled during childbirth while male inmates were forced to work in "plantation-style" conditions.

In a report published on Thursday (Sep 28), three UN-appointed experts said they had found practices in US&nbsp;prisons that amounted to "an affront to human dignity" in visits in April and May.

The US&nbsp;diplomatic mission in Geneva declined to comment. The Federal Bureau of Prisons said it was committed to ensuring the safety and security of incarcerated individuals as well as employees and the public.

One such practice is restraining and shackling women prisoners during childbirth, the report said.

The experts "heard, first hand, unbearable direct testimonies of pregnant women shackled during labour, who due to the chaining, lost their babies", it said. Asked to give details, a U.N. rights spokesperson referred to "several" cases and confirmed they all involved Black women.

The experts also collected direct testimonies of conditions at a Louisiana prison where it said thousands of mostly Black male prisoners were "forced to labour in the fields (even picking cotton) under the watch of white 'freemen' on horseback, in conditions very similar to those of 150 years ago".

It described the stories from the so-called 'Angola' facility as "shocking" and said they amounted to "contemporary forms of slavery". It also voiced alarm at the widespread use of solitary confinement, which it said appeared to be applied disproportionately to inmates of African descent.

One Black man told the experts he had been kept in isolation for 11 years without interruption, the report said. "Our findings point to the critical need for comprehensive reform," said one of the experts, Juan Mendez.

US&nbsp;prison conditions have been a concern for decades and rights groups have long called for facilities with the worst records to be reformed or shut down.

The investigation was set up by the U.N. Human Rights Council, of which the United States is a voting member, in 2021 after the killing of George Floyd, a Black man who died after his neck was pinned to the ground by a police officer.

The report was based on testimonies from 133 individuals in five U.S. cities as well as those collected from five detention centres. It contained a list of 30 recommendations for US&nbsp;authorities, including a call for a new commission on reparations for people of African descent.

'Black women inmates chained': US jail practices slammed by UN experts as racist, affront to dignity

United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday (Sep 26) joined striking auto workers on the picket line in Michigan in what the White House called a "historic" first step taken by a sitting US president.

The 80-year-old Democrat wore a baseball cap and used a megaphone to address the United Auto Workers (UAW) union's workers in Wayne County. Speaking to the banner-waving employees, he said to them that he was on their side.

Speaking to the workers, Biden said that the "Big Three" automakers - General Motors, Ford and Stellantis - were "doing incredibly well and guess what, you should be doing incredibly well too."

"You deserve the significant raise you need and other benefits," he stated, as the crowd cheered along. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called it a "historic" trip.

"Today will mark the first time a sitting president has visited a picket line in modern times," said Jean-Pierre, while speaking to the reporters aboard Air Force One. "This is an important message to America's auto workers,” he added.

Biden was greeted by the UAW's outspoken chief Shawn Fain on the tarmac in Detroit, who also accompanied him to the picket line.

<h2>Workers call it 'huge'</h2>

56-year-old auto worker Patrick Smaller said, "That is huge” while speaking about Biden's visit from the picket line outside a massive Ford plant located in Wayne County, Michigan on Tuesday.

"He believes in what we stand for,” he added. As trucks and cars honked in support, another worker Tiara Conner said that Biden's visit was "great".

Meanwhile, Donald Trump also plans to visit&nbsp;a non-union auto shop on Wednesday.

The former and current presidents are both aiming for the blue-collar vote in Michigan, a key swing state which was won by Trump in 2016 and then flipped back to Biden in 2020.

Biden has also talked up his pro-union credentials, and three years ago, an endorsement from the United Auto Workers (UAW) union helped the leader secure the presidency. "I always support the UAW", said Biden on Monday.

Biden has stated that he feels union workers deserve their "fair share" of the record earnings of the companies and added that the time has come for a "win-win agreement" between the automakers and union.

On Monday, when quizzed whether he supports the UAW demands, Biden said, “I think the UAW gave up an incredible amount back when the automobile industry was going under. They gave up everything from their pensions on, and they saved the automobile industry.”

India-Canada relations hit rock bottom after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a shocking claim about "Indian agents' involvement" in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Canada stood accused of sheltering “Khalistani terrorists and extremists”, as the Indian government said that the “inaction of the Canadian government on this matter has been a long-standing and continuing concern”.

What followed was a series of tit-for-tat actions which included the tit-for-tat ousting of diplomats, a pause in free trade talks, back-to-back travel advisory updates and halting of visa processing, and raking up of the issue in national and international fora.

Khalistanis taking shelter in Canada is not new. It has remained a thorn between the two nations for years.

Here's how an ideology, which failed to gain traction in India, grew into a synchronised terror network that proliferated for more than 40 years.

<h2>Khalistani movement finds roots in Canada</h2>

Khalistan refers to an imagined homeland of Sikhs in India, incorporating Punjab with parts of other northern states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.

In 1971, two years before a separatist resolution in India's Anandpur Sahib town formalised the purported demand for Khalistan, politician and dentist Dr. Jagjit Singh Chauhan had already declared himself the president of Khalistan while residing in Canada.

An advertisement was run by him in The New York Times which proclaimed the birth of Khalistan. "We are going to wait no more. Today we are launching the final crusade. We are a nation in our own right," the advertisement read.

In December 1971, Pakistan's Zulfikar Ali Bhutto extended a supporting hand to the Khalistani leaders. Canadian journalist Terri Milewski in his book "Blood for Blood: Fifty Years of the Global Khalistan Project" wrote about Bhutto's meeting with a delegation of Sikhs, where he quoted the Pakistani leader as saying, "Sardarji, you have the keys to Nankana Sahib. Come there, we'll help you and make it the capital of Khalistan. Start a movement from here."

<h2>Khalistan's shared legacy: From Pierre to Justin Trudeau</h2>

At a time when Khalistan was growing its roots in Canada, the relations between Ottawa and New Delhi were strained with the detonation of India's first nuclear weapon at the Pokhran test site. It was the use of plutonium from the CIRUS reactor, which was commissioned in July 1960 with Canadian collaboration, that left Ottawa miffed.

India claimed that it was a "peaceful nuclear explosion" and that the country did not violate the terms of the agreement with Canada. However, Canada's then prime Minister Pierre Trudeau - father of current PM Justin Trudeau who lit off the Nijjar row some days ago - withdrew all support from India's nuclear energy programme and the Canadian officials, who were working on another reactor, were recalled.

"Most of the Khalistanis started settling in Canada in the regime of Pierre Trudeau in the late 70s and 80s," former ambassador of India to Canada Vishnu Prakash told WION. "Trudeau and India's then prime minister Indira Gandhi shared differences of opinions."

For years, Canada was a safe haven for Khalistan supporters who have been accused of terrorism by India. "Canada was known to harbour people of all kinds. So, separatists from even other countries like Sri Lanka found refuge in Canada," Prakash said.

<h2>Kaniskha flight bombing: A dark chapter</h2>

In June 1985, after Khalistani terror organisation Babbar Khalsa orchestrated the bombing of Air India Kanishka, which killed 329 people - mostly Canadians- the head of the terror group Talwinder Parmar was shielded by Pierre Trudeau, which made things worse for bilateral ties.

"The meek Canadian response to the Khalistani challenge was a frequent target of Indian politicians as far back as 1982 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi complained about it to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau," Milewski wrote in his book, stressing Canada's weak response to the growing Khalistani terror.

"It was Pierre Trudeau’s government which refused the 1982 Indian request to extradite Talwinder Parmar to India for murder, on the quaint grounds that India was insufficiently deferential to the Queen," he wrote, referring to Britain's Queen Elizabeth.

Today, Justin Trudeau seems to be simply following the steps of his father.

<h2>Why 770,000 Sikhs are important to Canada government</h2>

Canada's "vote bank politics," as mentioned by India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, is the likely reason for the meek response of its government, and lack of action against increasing Khalistani extremism on its soil.

There are around 770,00 Sikhs in Canada, which is not a large number. So how do they become a factor in 'vote bank politics'?

"The Sikh community is concentrated in a few areas and they control 8 to 10 seats in the parliament indirectly," pointed out Ambassador Prakash.

He pointed out that at least 80 per cent of them voted for Trudeau and his Liberal Party.

"So, they have political influence much beyond their numbers and they are very well organised. They have funding through gurudwaras. So there is fund flow. They provide material and manpower to support the Liberal Party's campaigns. They also allegedly provide finances. So it is vote bank politics."

He noted that almost all political parties in Canada support the Khalistanis, "but the Liberals have gone out of the way to sup with them."

The former envoy emphasised that not all Sikhs are in support of Khalistani extremism, which gained roots on Canadian soil.

They are rather fearful of the violence these extremists may unfold, he added.

"Overwhelming percentage of Sikhs are peace-loving, they like India and see it as their cultural home. They are religious people, they go to gurudwaras and donate liberally, without necessarily knowing if it is controlled by a Khalistani. This makes the fund flow quite robust within Khalistani organisations and there is no scrutiny over the flow of the funds in Canada," he said.

"The Sikh masses in Canada are afraid of the capability of Khalistanis to commit violence. These extremists control the streets, they have the muscle and the government supports them, which further makes them more active and belligerent in their behaviour," the former ambassador said.

In a new study, self-sustaining chemical reactions were discovered which carry the potential to support alien life, which is very different from the elements present on Earth.

The biology of Earth hinges on organic compounds which comprise carbon along with elements like phosphorus, sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen. Scientists believe that alternative chemical frameworks can lead to the existence of alien life forms.

For&nbsp;long, scientists have wondered if alien life might evolve on the basis of significantly different chemistry. Researchers have speculated if silicon may work as a backbone for biology.

"It's important to explore these possibilities so that we have an idea of what all forms of life can look like, not just Earth life," study senior author Betul Kacar, an astrobiologist, bacteriologist and evolutionary biologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison said while speaking to Space.com.

A type of chemical interaction which is key to life on Earth is called autocatalysis. These reactions are self-sustaining and can produce molecules which encourage the same reaction to take place again.

"One of the major reasons that origin-of-life researchers care about autocatalysis is because reproduction — a key feature of life — is an example of autocatalysis," said Kacar.

"Life catalyses the formation of more life. One cell produces two cells, which can become four and so on. As the number of cells multiply, the number and diversity of possible interactions multiplies accordingly,” the astrobiologist added.

<h2>An autocatalysis beyond organic compounds</h2>

In the new study, researchers were in search of an autocatalysis which is beyond organic compounds. They said that such a reaction may exist as autocatalysis can help drive abiogenesis, which is the origin of life from lifelessness.

The scientists emphasised what are known as comproportionation cycles which can create multiple copies of a molecule. Such products can be used as starting materials to help these cycles reoccur, resulting in autocatalysis.

"Comproportionation is arguably unique because it is a single reaction that produces multiples of an output — it looks a lot like reproduction," said study lead author Zhen Peng, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, while speaking to Space.com.

To discover such reactions, more than two centuries of digitised scientific documents, which were written in different languages, were analysed by scientists.

"With effective language search and translation tools, we were able to design and conduct this first-of-its-kind assessment of the pervasiveness of autocatalytic cycles," said study co-author Zach Adam, a geologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, while speaking to Space.com.

US President Joe Biden will be participating in the United Auto Workers picket line on Tuesday (September 26). This will be the strongest show of support by the leader for union members who have been striking against Ford, Stellantis and General Motors.

On Friday, Biden took to X to announce that he will be travelling to Wayne County, Michigan, "to join the picket line and stand in solidarity with the men and women of UAW as they fight for a fair share of the value they helped create."

It is a move that some experts have called unprecedented in modern political history, a step which the White House has quickly called “historic”.

"This is going to be a historic visit,” the White House said.

Jean-Pierre was asked if the president is officially siding with the demands of the striking workers by joining the picket line, and how his appearance is consistent with the claim of the White House that he will not get involved in the negotiations.

To this, she said, "He is standing with the workers. We are not involved in negotiations."

"That is something for them to decide what is going to work for the parties that are involved, but he is standing with the autoworkers,” she said.

The appearance of Biden will come one day before former president Donald Trump reaches Michigan, a 2024 battleground, to campaign instead of participating in the second Republican primary debate to be held on Wednesday night.

Biden to take part in striking autoworkers' picket line, White House calls it 'historic'

Amid the India-Canada diplomatic row over the killing of a terrorist, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar slammed some countries' response to terrorism based on political convenience, in a hard-hitting address at&nbsp;the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday (Sep 26).

Jaishankar gave the statement amid escalating tensions between India and Canada, which&nbsp;is a safe haven for Khalistani extremists even as it accused India of being involved in the killing of the terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Jaishankar also attacked "cherry-picking" by member states when it comes to respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs.

“We must never again allow an injustice like vaccine apartheid to recur. Climate Action too cannot continue to witness an evasion of historical responsibilities. The power of markets should not be utilised to steer food and energy from the needy to the wealthy. Nor must we countenance that political convenience determines responses to terrorism, extremism and violence. Similarly, respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs cannot be exercises&nbsp;in cherry-picking. When reality departs from rhetoric, we must have the courage to call it out," he said.

“Namaste from Bharat!...Our fullest support to this UNGA's theme of rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity. This is an occasion to take stock of our achievements and challenges even while sharing our aspirations and goals. Indeed, in regard to both, there is much that India has to share," he said.

"The world is witnessing an exception period of turmoil...At this juncture, it was with a sense of exceptional responsibility India took up the presidency of G20. Our vision of 'One Earth, One Family, One Future' sought to focus on the key concerns of the many just the narrow interests of the few,” he added.

<h2>Jaishankar calls for making Security Council 'contemporary'</h2>

The foreign minister backed the UN Security Council reforms, calling for making it 'contemporary'.

“It was noteworthy that at India's initiative, the African Union as a permanent member of the G20. By doing so, we gave voice to an entire continent which has long been its due. This significant step in reform should inspire the United Nations, a much older organisation, to also make the Security Council contemporary,” he added.

<h2>'Still few nations shape agenda, this won't go unchallenged'</h2>

Jaishankar pointed out how some nations have been shaping agendas and defining norms and added that it is important that 'rule-makers do not subjugate rule-takers'.

"It is still a few nations who shape the agenda and seek to define the norms. This can't go on indefinitely nor will it go unchallenged. A fair, equitable and democratic order will surely emerge once we all put our minds to it. And for a start, that means ensuring that rule-makers do not subjugate rule-takers,” he said.

Amid the India-Canada diplomatic row over the killing of a terrorist, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar slammed some countries' response to terrorism based on political convenience, in a hard-hitting address at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday (Sep 26). Jaishankar gave the statement amid escalating tensions between India and Canada, which is a safe haven for Khalistani extremists even as it accused India of being involved in the killing of the terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Similarly, respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs cannot be exercises in cherry-picking. When reality departs from rhetoric, we must have the courage to call it out," he said. Political convenience cannot determine response to extremism: India's Jaishankar amid Canada row

Russia on Tuesday (Sep 26) rejected Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's appeal against&nbsp;a court decision to imprison him for 19 years on extremism charges. He was ordered to be kept in a in a maximum-security prison.

The First Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction ruled "to uphold the decision" taken by Moscow City Court last month, announced judge Viktor Rogov.

For the last decade, Navalny has been the loudest opposition voice in Russia and had organised huge anti-government rallies before he was imprisoned in 2021 on charges of fraud, which his allies at home and abroad called politically motivated.

Last month, Navalny was handed a 19-year jail term by a court in his prison near Moscow after he was accused of having created an organisation which has undermined public security by carrying out "extremist activities".

The 47-year-old had set up a network of political offices throughout the country as well as a corruption watchdog that made credible graft allegations against political leaders.

In 2021, he was imprisoned after arriving in Moscow from Germany, where he was recovering after getting poisoned for which he had blamed the Kremlin.

"You are being forced to surrender your Russia without a fight to a gang of traitors, thieves and scoundrels who have seized power. Don't lose the will to resist," said Navalny, in a statement of the ruling.

<h2>Navalny's solitary confinement</h2>

Navalny, who has claimed to be facing multiple health complications and was on a weeks-long hunger strike, has been communicating with the outside world via his lawyers.

After Russia invaded Ukraine, Navalny repeatedly spoke out against the military campaign.

Thousands of people have been detained by Russia, including high-profile political activists, for speaking against the Ukrainian conflict and highlighting alleged atrocities carried out by the Russian military.

Russian authorities have locked up Navalny in the maximum security IK-6 penal colony, around 250 kilometres (155 miles) east of Moscow.

However, the court also ruled to send Navalny to a "special regime" colony in August. This colony has a maximum security facility and has been designed especially for dangerous criminals. It is highly likely to cut him off from the outside world.

There are around 40 prisons across Russia, many are located in remote and isolated regions. Usually, Navalny appears at court hearings through grainy video connections in prison uniforms. '

As per his allies, Navalny's health has suffered in recent months during solitary confinement. Before the appeal, prison wardens had kept Navalny in a detention cell for the 20th time, his team said.
