The Israeli rescue service Zaka on Sunday (Oct 8) confirmed that 260 dead bodies were retrieved by the paramedics from a music festival which was attended by thousands of people and later was attacked by Hamas militants.

The total death toll is likely to go higher as other paramedic teams work in the area. In the videos shared on social media platforms and by Israeli news outlets, dozens of festival goers were seen running across an open field as gunshots were fired. Many of them were gunned down as they tried to flee and some hid in the fruit orchards.

The Nature Party, which was being held near Kibbutz Re'im close to Gaza, was attended by thousands of people and became one of the first targets of Hamas militants who entered Israel on Saturday (Oct 7), and launched one of the biggest attacks on the country in decades.

After brutal Hamas attack, Israeli rescue service retrieves 260 bodies from music festival

Israel's representative to the United Nations Gilad Erdan shared a video in which the leaders of Hamas were seen purportedly thanking Iran for supporting the terrorist organisation with arms, money and other means.

In the video shared, as per the translation provided by the ambassador, the leader can be seen saying, “Thanks to all those individuals, groups and countries, particularly the Islamic Republic of Iran, who have supported us generously with money, arms and other means, providing us with the missiles that have battered the zionist strongholds during past confrontations with the occupiers. They have also supported us with anti-tank type missiles which, by the grace of god, and the faith of our fighters, shattered the myth of zionist superiority.”

While sharing the video, the envoy wrote, “If you had any doubt about who is funding and supporting this barbaric terror attack: here’s a video of Hamas terrorists thanking none other than IRAN for the weapons, money and rockets that helped the terrorists to slaughter and kidnap Israelis. The Ayatollah regime is the head of the octopus. Don’t look away.”

Watch | Israel's representative at UN shares video of Hamas thanking Iran for support

On the morning of October 7, the Palestinian group Hamas launched one of the biggest surprise attacks on Israel, in which it fired a barrage of rockets from the Gaza Strip and the security barriers were breached by the gunmen. The attack was launched on Israel during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah.

However, the date chosen for one of the bloodiest attacks, was just a day after the Yom Kippur War was launched, which started 50 years ago on October 6, with an aim to recapture the territory taken by Israel during a brief conflict in 1967.

What was the Yom Kippur war?

On October 6, 1973, which was the holiest day in Judaism – known as 'Yom Kippur', surprise attacks were launched by a coalition of Arab nations on Israeli-occupied territories, which started the Yom Kippur War.

Most of the fighting took place in the Golan Heights, Sinai and the other areas which were under Israel's control since the Six-Day War in 1967. The geopolitical tensions between the countries reached a tipping point when a global nuclear alert was issued by the then-US President Richard Nixon.

After the war between nations intensified, oil deliveries were suspended by the Arab members of The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to all Western nations, which had extended their support to Israel. This led to a global energy crisis.

After two weeks of war which resulted in the death of 20,000 people, Israel achieved victory and gained more land under its occupation compared to what it had before the start of the war.

Why is Yom Kippur War being compared to Operation Al-Aqsa Flood?

Exactly after 50 years, more than 5,000 rockets were rained down on Israel as Hamas announced the initiation of 'Operation Al-Aqsa Flood', as it appealed to the "resistance fighters in the West Bank" as well as in "Arab and Islamic nations" to join the war against Israel, which has been accused of "illegally occupying" Palestinian land.

The recent violence has been attributed by Hamas officials to the long-standing tensions between Israel and Palestinians, especially the fight over the sacred Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. It has been compared to the Yom Kippur War of 1973, as it is one of the deadliest attacks on Israel since then.

The second similarity between the two wars is the criticism faced by Israel for being unprepared at both times when the attack was launched. The attacks by Hamas came as a surprise to Israel even though it has advanced intelligence and interception systems.

In the Yom Kippur war also, Israel was unprepared since many soldiers were on leave due to the Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement, which is considered the holiest day in Judaism.

Here's why Hamas chose October 7 to launch bloodiest attack on Israel

Amid the proliferating false information regarding the rapidly escalating war between Israel and Gaza Strip militants on the social media platform X, its owner Elon Musk personally asked the users to follow notorious accounts which have been promoting lies.

“For following the war in real-time, @WarMonitors & @sentdefender are good,” posted Musk on Sunday morning (Oct 8) for his 150 million follower accounts on the platform, which was formerly known as Twitter.

In three hours, the post received 11 million views and received thanks from such notorious accounts, before it was deleted by Musk.

The two accounts, mentioned by Musk, were the first ones to spread a false claim regarding an explosion near the White House in May. Because of the false story, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stock index dropped briefly 85 points before it was debunked.

Israel-Hamas war – A litmus test for X?

A researcher at the Atlantic Council Digital Forensics Research Lab, Emerson T. Brooking posted that @sentdefender is an “absolutely poisonous account. regularly posting wrong and unverifiable things … inserting random editorialisation and trying to juice its paid subscriber count.”

The War Monitor account has spoken over Israel and religion, sharing a year ago that “the overwhelming majority of people in the media and banks are zionists” and telling a correspondent in June to “go worship a jew lil bro.”

Information researchers stated that the fresh conflict will prove an early test of how the new version of Twitter, X, spreads accurate data amid a major crisis, further stating that the platform's immediate impression was poor.

“Anecdotal evidence that X is failing this stress test is plentiful,” stated Mike Caulfield, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public, while speaking to The Washington Post.

5 Cooking Oils Which Are Harmful For Your Health

Cottonseed Oil is found in many common products which we use daily like chips, canned foods and packaged goods. However, experts say cottonseed oil comes from cotton crops on which chemicals like propargite, naled, dicofol, cyanide and trifluralin get sprayed and eventually seep inside the plant, making the oil toxic.

Even though fermented organic soybean oil has been said to be good for health, the same does not go for American soybean or soybean oil. This is because nearly 90 per cent of all soybeans grown are highly processed and genetically modified, reports suggest.

Safflower oil is said to contain a high amount of omega-6 fatty acids. The researchers have clearly stated that a lack of omega-3 and a high amount of omega-6 is making people very sick. This is said to cause heart disease, cancer and even diabetes.

There is no existence of canola plant in nature and hence, the canola oil is just a hybrid version of a rapeseed plant. The plant goes through a refining process and gets exposed to high heat which removes the omega-3 health-promoting fatty acids., experts say.

One of the most commonly used oils in our kitchen, sunflower oil is said to contain toxic substances called aldehydes and are likely to increase the risk of cancer and also lead to obesity.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Oct 5) said that they had discovered the traces of explosive grenades in the remains of Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin along with his crew after the fatal crash of their plane over Russia in August. The plane of Prigozhin crashed between Saint Petersburg and Moscow in August, two months after a brief mutiny was led by him against the top military brass of Russia. The critics of the Kremlin and the Western nations have hinted at foul play. The comments made by Putin were the first significant ones made by him after an investigation was launched by Russia into the crash. "The head of the Investigative Committee reported to me a few days ago," said Putin while speaking at a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club. "Fragments of hand grenades were found in the bodies of the victims of the air disaster. There was no external impact on the plane,” he added. Russian investigators have stated that they are investigating all the possible scenarios related to the crash, which included premeditated murder. Traces of grenade discovered in remains of Wagner chief Prigozhin: Putin

China has been planning to expand its space station from three to six modules in coming years and is touting it as an alternative to the NASA-led International Space Station's (ISS) for near-Earth missions to astronauts from other countries. The space station is being expanded by China as the ISS nears the end of its lifespan.

The Chinese space station's operational lifetime will be more than 15 years, said the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a unit of the main space contractor of China, during the 74th International Astronautical Congress in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Wednesday (Oct 4).

The lifetime announced is 10 years more than announced previously.

The self-built space station of China, which is known as Tiangong or Celestial Palace in Chinese, has been fully operational since late 2022 and hosted three astronauts at an orbital altitude of up to 450 km (280 miles).

After the expansion to six modules, Tiangong at 180 metric tonnes is still only 40 per cent of the mass of the ISS, which can manage to keep only seven astronauts.

ISS to be decommissioned after 2030

However, the ISS, which has been in orbit for more than two decades, is likely to be decommissioned after 2030, around the same time China has stated that it aims to become "a major space power".

Last year, Chinese state media said that as Tiangong became fully operational, the country would be no "slouch" as the ISS moved towards retirement, adding that "several countries" had requested to accommodate their astronauts on the Chinese station.

But in a blow to aspirations of China for space diplomacy, the European Space Agency (ESA) stated that it did not have the budgetary or "political" green light this year to participate in Tiangong, dropping a years-long plan of a visit by European astronauts.

China's space plans include a massive space station to replace NASA's ageing ISS

In a surprising revelation, the James Webb Space Telescope’s new images found pairs of planet-like objects located in the Orion Nebula. The objects had never been detected earlier.

The Orion Nebula is a glowing cloud made of gas and dust and is among the night sky’s brightest nebulae. It is clearly identifiable as the sword in the Orion constellation.

The Orion Nebula, which is located 1,300 light-years from Earth, has for long provided astronomers with a lot of celestial objects to study, which included brown dwarfs, planet-forming disks around stars, or objects with a mass ranging between that of stars and planets.

The near-infrared camera of the James Webb Telescope, called NIRCam, was used by astronomers to capture Orion Nebula’s mosaics in short and long wavelengths of light, which revealed unexpected discoveries and unprecedented details.

When the Orion Nebula’s short-wavelength image was studied by the astronomers Samuel G. Pearson and Mark J. McCaughrean, they closely looked into the Trapezium Cluster, a young star-forming region that’s around one million years old and filled with thousands of new stars till the brim.

“Although some of them are more massive than the planet Jupiter, they will be roughly the same size and only slightly larger,” stated Pearson, a European Space Agency research fellow at the European Space Research and Technology Centre in the Netherlands.

The broken pieces were the head of Athena from the 2nd century CE discovered in 1978 in Tel Naharon near Beit She’an, and a statue of a griffin, which held the wheel of fate and represented the Roman god, Nemesis. The statue of a griffin was discovered in the northern Negev in 1957 and dated to 210-211 CE.

The damaged sculptures were sent to the conservation lab of the museum for professional restoration, it stated. The museum called the incident as “severe” and “worrying”, stating that it will not impact its opening hours and operations. Russia strikes Ukraine's Kharkiv again, kills 10-year-old boy and injures others

The Italian government is planning for a possible mass evacuation of tens of thousands of people who live around the Campi Flegrei super volcano near Naples, officials said on Thursday.

The new measures, which include a scheme to check on the strength of buildings in the area after months of repeated earthquakes, will be discussed at a cabinet meeting later in the day, a government statement said.

Campi Flegrei, or Phlegraean Fields from the Greek word for "burning," lies some 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) from Naples and is dotted with towns and villages, including Pozzuoli, Agnano and Bacoli, which have a combined population of more than 500,000.

The caldera is dotted with 24 craters and is a much bigger volcano than the nearby Vesuvius, which destroyed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii in 79 AD.

It has been jolted by more than 1,100 earthquakes in the last month alone, including a 4.0 trembler on Monday and a 4.2 magnitude quake last week -- the strongest in the area for four decades.

Experts say the increased seismic activity is probably linked to a phenomenon known as bradyseism, when the earth rises, or falls, depending on the cycle, caused by the filling or emptying of underground magma chambers.

There is not an imminent threat of an eruption, most volcanologists say, but with the ground currently rising by 1.5 cm (0.59 inches) a month, there is concern over the impact on local buildings.

Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said this week evacuations would only be triggered in case of "extreme necessity".

The cabinet is also expected to direct more resources to local civil protection agencies to ensure they can swiftly intervene in case of emergency and to fund a communication campaign to raise public awareness, Musumeci said.

Local media reported that a group of hospitals in the area would start evacuation tests from Friday to make sure they are ready to face stronger quakes or eruptions.

The last time Campi Flegrei suffered a comparable burst of earthquakes was in the 1980s. On that occasion, some 40,000 people were temporarily evacuated from nearby Pozzuoli.

The last significant eruption was in 1538. One of its biggest eruptions took place 39,000 years ago and might have led to the extinction of Neanderthal man, researchers say. Magma from that blast has been found in Greenland, some 4,500 km away.
