The drug regulator of India discovered that an anti-allergy syrup and a cough syrup, which were being produced by Norris Medicines, are toxic, as per a government report. The syrups were declared toxic months after Indian-made cough syrups were said to be the cause of death of 141 children worldwide.

The medicines were contaminated either with ethylene glycol (EG) or diethylene glycol (DEG), the same contaminants which were discovered in the cough syrups which led to deaths in Gambia, Uzbekistan and Cameroon since last year.

For the first time in around two years, any DEG and EG contamination has been flagged by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in its monthly reports as the country makes an attempt to crack down on its drug industry which is worth $42 billion and is dominated by small players.

Speaking to Reuters on Wednesday (October 4), commissioner of Gujarat state's Food and Drug Control Administration HG Koshia said that it had inspected the Norris factory last month and gave orders for suspending its production and recalling the drugs.

"The company failed miserably on compliance parameters of good manufacturing practices. The adequate water system was not there. The air-handling unit was also not up to the mark. In the larger interest of public health, we ordered the unit to stop production," Koshia said.

The CDSCO uploaded a list of "not of standard quality/spurious/adulterated/misbranded" drugs for August on its website, as per which in the tests carried out at a CDSCO laboratory, the Trimax Expectorant of the company contained 0.118 per cent of EG, while allergy drug Sylpro Plus Syrup had 0.171 per cent of EG and 0.243 per cent of DEG.

CDSCO report on syrups is 'pivotal': WHO

Koshia stated that the cough syrup was being exported by Norris. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the safe limit is not beyond 0.10 per cent, which is based on internationally accepted standards.

"We are aware of the CDSCO report and have communicated with that agency to ascertain where the products... have been exported," stated a WHO spokeswoman. "This information is pivotal when we consider whether - or not - to issue a medical product alert," she added.

The CDSCO also discovered that DEG and EG had contaminated three batches of COLD OUT syrup made by Fourrts (India) Laboratories. In August, the World Health Organization said that there were unacceptable levels of DEG and EG in the batch of COLD OUT sold in Iraq.

India declares two syrups from Norris Medicines as 'toxic' after reports of poisoning deaths

Taking a first glimpse of the near-Earth asteroid Bennu's sample, the scientists stumbled upon an abundance of dark, fine-grained material on the inside part of the container's base and lid. The unexpected debris is likely to reveal key information regarding the asteroid before they analyse the primary sample.

The historic landing of the sample on September 24 in the Utah desert marked the culmination of NASA’s 7-year OSIRIS-Rex mission which went to asteroid Bennu from Earth, touched down on the surface of the asteroid and collected samples and then dropped the sample back to the Earth.

8 Side-Effects Of Consuming Too Much Milk Tea

Tea contains caffeine, which if consumed in excess amounts, can lead to bloating.

Along with caffeine, tea contains theophylline, which dehydrates our body and leads to constipation.

The United Nations Security Council on Monday authorised a foreign security mission to Haiti, a year after the Caribbean country asked for help to fight violent gangs that have largely overrun its capital Port-au-Prince.

"More than just a simple vote, this is in fact an expression of solidarity with a population in distress," Haiti's Foreign Minister Jean Victor Geneus told the council. "It's a glimmer of hope for the people that have for too long been suffering."

The 15-member council adopted a resolution, drafted by the United States and Ecuador, that authorizes the so-called Multinational Security Support mission "to take all necessary measures" - code for use of force.

China and Russia abstained from the vote, wary of authorizing the blanket use of force under Chapter 7 of the founding U.N. Charter. The remaining 13 members voted in favour.

"We have stepped up to create a new way of preserving global peace and security, answering the repeated calls of a member state facing a multi-dimensional crisis amid alarming spiralling gang violence," said senior U.S. diplomat Jeffrey DeLaurentis.

The Security Council also expanded a U.N. arms embargo to include all gangs - a measure China wanted. Haitian officials have said guns used by gangs are believed to be mostly imported from the United States. The embargo previously only applied to specific individuals.

"This is a very important decision. If the council had taken this step at an earlier time, the security situation in Haiti might not have deteriorated to what it is today," China's U.N. Ambassador Zhang Jun told the council after the vote.

The response to Haiti's request for help was delayed due to a struggle to find a country willing to lead a security assistance mission. Kenya stepped forward in July with a pledge of 1,000 police. The Bahamas then committed 150 people, while Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda are also willing to help.

Elections

Following the council's approval on Monday, it was not immediately clear how quickly a force could be deployed.

"Today's vote is only the first step. Now, the work of getting the mission off the ground begins," U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement.

While not sending any troops, the U.S. government hopes to provide $100 million to back the multinational mission with logistical and financial assistance, which could include intelligence, airlift, communications and medical support.

Countries have been cautious of supporting the unelected administration of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who has said fair elections cannot be held with current insecurity. Haiti has been without any elected representatives since January.

The Security Council stressed an "urgent need" for Haiti to make progress toward "transparent, inclusive, and credible electoral processes and free and fair elections."

The security assistance mission, while approved by the U.N. Security Council, is not a United Nations operation.

U.N. peacekeepers were deployed to Haiti in 2004 after a rebellion led to the ouster and exile of then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Peacekeeping troops left in 2017 and were replaced by U.N. police, who left in 2019.

Haitians are wary of an armed U.N. presence. The Caribbean country was free of cholera until 2010, when U.N. peacekeepers dumped infected sewage into a river. More than 9,000 people died of the disease, and some 800,000 fell ill.

The council resolution adopted on Monday asks the countries taking part in the security mission "to adopt appropriate wastewater management and other environmental controls to guard against the introduction and spread of water-borne diseases."

A 104-year-old woman, who is from Chicago, United States, has been aiming to get certified as the oldest person to ever skydive after she made a tandem jump from a height of 13,500ft in northern Illinois.

“Age is just a number,” said Dorothy Hoffner, while interacting with a cheering crowd seconds after she touched the ground on Sunday (Oct 1) at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, which is 85 miles (140km) south-west of Chicago, reported the Chicago Tribune.

In May 2022, the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest skydiver was made by 103-year-old Linnea Ingegard Larsson from Sweden. However, Skydive Chicago has been working to get the jump of Hoffner certified as a record by the Guinness World Records, reported WLS-TV.

The woman appeared calm and confident when the flight was aloft and the people onboard opened its aft door to reveal tan crop fields far below, shortly before she went towards the edge and leapt into the air.

The woman jumped out of the plane with her head first and completed a perfect forward roll in the sky before she flew stably in freefall as her belly faced the ground.

The woman dived for seven minutes, which included the slow descent of her parachute to the ground. As she landed on the ground, the woman clung to the harness over her narrow shoulders and softly landed on the grassy landing area.

Throughout the night, the team travelled by foot and reached the remote campsite around 1 am Saturday morning, where they discovered the dead body of the couple and their dog, who had lost their lives in the encounter with a grizzly bear.

The bear was reported to be demonstrating “aggressive behaviour” and Parks Canada killed it “to ensure public safety”. Hours later, the RCMP arrived to transport the victims to Sundre, which is a town nearly 50 miles east of the place where the attack took place.

“This is a tragic incident, and Parks Canada wishes to express its sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims,” said the agency, in a statement.

The fatalities were the first to be reported in half a century within Banff National Park’s border, although a spate of attacks was experienced by the region in the summer of 1980 by the “Black Grizzly of Whiskey Creek” – one of which turned fatal.

The couple was not identified yet but “loved the outdoors and were inseparable”, said a family member, in a statement. “They lived for being in the backcountry and were two of the most cautious people I know. They knew the bear protocol and followed it to a tee,” they added. As per the family member of one of the deceased, the couple was visiting the national park regularly while in the backcountry. They also went to the national park on Friday at 5 p.m. when a notification was sent to them that they had reached the camp safely. The camp was located in the Red Deer River Valley, which has rugged terrain west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch and an area of steep cliffs. Burger King is still operational in Russia after the owner of the brand pledged to exit the country more than a year ago.

Restaurant Brands International (RBI), which is the owner of 15 per cent of the franchise business of the fast food outlet in Russia, said to the BBC that it had "no new updates to share at this time" on its exit. In March 2022, the firm said that the process of exiting Russia had started.

Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, Western companies have been facing pressure to leave Russia. The RBI was accused by the critics of "sustaining Putin's regime" by not being able to ditch its stake in its Russian business.

One of the largest fast-food restaurant companies in the world, RBI has cited its complicated franchise agreement for the obstacles it is facing in attempting to exit Russia. The agreement is a joint venture along with three other partners for around 800 restaurants.

In an innovative use of artificial intelligence, the famous Shroud of Turin was made a starting point for producing an image which appears to match the marks on the controversial cloth.

The latest AI image of Jesus Christ was created by Midjourney software, as per the Daily Star, which said that the image was commissioned by them to mark the 90th anniversary of the first time the famous Shroud of Turin was placed on public display.

In the idealised image, a man is seen with long hair and a beard. Sharing the photo, author Lee Strobel wrote on X, “According to Artificial Intelligence, this is what Jesus looked like if the Shroud of Turin is authentic.”

As per the New York Post, the software was used even before. "Everyone I’ve shared my work with can’t believe how real the pictures really look,” said Duncan Thomsen, adding that AI software Midjourney was used by him through the Discord app.

The history of the famed shroud is long and disputed, as some said that this was the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. With interesting things connected to the Shroud of Turin, the new AI image of Jesus Christ bas sparked controversy, as reported by CBN.

Question over image's accuracy

Speaking to CBN News, author Clinton S. Thomas said, "The AI, depending on its access, was likely to reference several popular images of Jesus in addition to the Shroud before making a picture. The Shroud gives no specific indication of eye colour, skin colour, hair colour, or clothing - this image includes all which indicates it is pulling from various images.”

“No matter how accurate AI may like to be, it can't be that accurate if the information that gets processed are only depictions,” he stated.

The burial cloth has an interesting history with some saying that the shroud was owned by the Byzantine emperors. However, it vanished during the Sack of Constantinople in 1204. As per the historians, a relic was possessed by the Order of Knights Templar which showed the image of a bearded man on linen or cotton.

The shroud’s ownership was passed to the House of Savoy in 1453. The shroud was damaged in a fire in a chapel of Chambéry, which is the capital of Savoy, in 1532 and it was repaired with patches by nuns from the Order of Saint Clare.

The Duke of Savoy in 1578 shifted the shroud from Chambéry to Turin in northern Italy and since then, it has remained there. It remains in the Chapel of the Holy Shroud at Turin Cathedral.

A case under the stringent anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was registered by Delhi Police on Tuesday (Oct 3) and the homes of various journalists, who are affiliated with the news portal, were searched.

The step was taken by the Delhi Police amid allegations that the funding was received by the news portal from China.

The police officers from the Delhi Police’s Special Cell conducted the searches. So far, no arrests have been made, however, sources stated that few journalists were taken to the police stations for questioning.

The Enforcement Directorate had earlier registered a case against the news portal and started investigating its funding. The central agency had also attached some assets linked to the news portal.

Delhi Police register anti-terror case against NewsClick, raid journalists amid China funding row

Rail passengers across the United Kingdom are likely to face further disruption this week as another wave of strikes is being planned by train drivers union Aslef and Tube workers union Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT).

The walkout of this week was timed by members of Aslef to cause disruption in the Conservative Party Conference. On the days of the strike, the unions will force 16 train operating companies to cancel all services.

Meanwhile, a ban on overtime on the days of non-strike by Aslef will further disrupt the network. So far, the union has called 13 one-day strikes amid its ongoing 16-month dispute over pay.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Aslef General Secretary Mick Whelan stated, “While we regret having to take this action – we don’t want to lose a day’s pay, or disrupt passengers, as they try to travel by train – the government, and the employers, have forced us into this position.”

“Our members have not, now, had a pay rise for four years – since 2019 – and that’s not right when prices have soared in that time. Train drivers, perfectly reasonably, want to be able to buy now what they could buy four years ago,” he added.

Fresh strikes by London Underground workers

Meanwhile, fresh strikes were announced by London Underground workers in a dispute over working conditions and job cuts.

“Station staff have had enough of having their livelihoods threatened by job losses and attacks on their terms and conditions,” said union’s General Secretary Mick Lynch, as reported by The Telegraph.

“Station staff have a vital role to play assisting vulnerable passengers access the network safely and ensuring that the Tube is a safe environment for passengers. These job cuts and attacks on conditions are going to lead to more unstaffed stations, temporary closures and rising passenger anger,” he added.

“TfL has had its budgets slashed but the savings made by these station staff cuts will be negatable and will lead to shortages that are unacceptable. This strike action will lead to the Tube being shut down and we call on Mayor Sadiq Khan to meet us urgently to discuss this matter,” he further stated.

The passengers of the National Rail were asked to expect “significant disruption” on strike days. It is also likely that the services will remain disrupted and start on the day immediately after.

The government has been criticised by the union for not being able to meet its negotiating team - Assistant General Secretary Simon Weller, General Secretary Mick Whelan, and Executive Committee president Dave Calfe.

Train drivers, perfectly reasonably, want to be able to buy now what they could buy four years ago,” he added. Fresh strikes by London Underground workers Meanwhile, fresh strikes were announced by London Underground workers in a dispute over working conditions and job cuts. Tube strikes: London’s RMT union plans October walkouts, rail passengers face fresh disruption

Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, is likely to plead not guilty to gun charges. Hunter, who will be appearing in the federal court in Delaware on Tuesday (Oct 3), has been charged with illegal possession of a handgun.

The 53-year-old is facing three felony charges because of a .38-caliber Colt Cobra revolver he purchased in 2018.

The younger Biden has been charged with two counts of making false claims while filling the form needed for gun purchase, wherein he stated that he was not illegally using drugs at the time.

Based on the same statements, he is facing a third charge for illegally possessing the gun, which he had kept with himself for just 11 days in October 2018, and later gotten rid of.

The lawyer of Hunter Biden, Abbe Lowell, informed the court that the former will be pleading not guilty at Tuesday's 10:00 am (1400 GMT) arraignment to be held at a federal courthouse in Wilmington, the hometown of the Bidens.

Lowell further asked Judge Christopher Burke to permit Biden, who has been living in California, to appear in the court via video call and not in person. However, that request was denied.

"The defendant should not receive any special treatment in this matter," wrote Burke in his ruling.

In July, Biden failed to finalise a deal with federal prosecutor David Weiss, which would have freed him from the gun charges while he pleaded guilty to two tax charges and escaped prison.

Because of this, Weiss filed three felony gun possession charges against Hunter Biden.

If the court convicts Hunter Biden, he could face 25 years of imprisonment in theory, although in practice, such offences, if not pressed along with other charges, are not punished with any prison term.
