In a bizarre incident, customs officials at Minnesota airport found a box of giraffe poop which was being carried by a woman from Kenya, said officials on Thursday (Oct 5). The box was later destroyed by the officials and the faeces were disposed of.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p>

On September 29, the agriculture specialists from the customs agency selected the Iowa woman for inspection and she accepted that she was carrying giraffe faeces.<o:p></o:p>

She further confirmed that she was planning to use the giraffe excrement to make a necklace, as per the US&nbsp;Customs and Border Protection. The woman informed the officials stationed at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport that the moose droppings have been used by her in the past to make jewellery.

The White House said that it has started making plans for a meeting to be held in San Francisco between United States President Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November, an attempt which is aimed at stabilising the tumultuous relationship between the two countries, as per senior administration officials.

“It’s pretty firm” that a meeting will be held, confirmed an administration even though a formal announcement of the engagement has not happened as of yet. “We’re beginning the process” of planning, said the official, as reported by The Washington Post. &nbsp;

A second senior administration official stated that Biden is looking forward to the scheduled meeting with Xi, but added that “nothing has been confirmed yet.”

The plans will be confirmed after the US visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Washington in the coming weeks, said the administration officials.

White House plans face-to-face meeting between Biden and China’s Xi Jinping in California

Weather disasters fueled by climate change -- from floods to droughts, storms to wildfires -- sparked&nbsp;43.1 million child displacements from 2016 to 2021, the UN Children's Fund warned Thursday, slamming the lack of attention paid to victims.

In a sweeping report on the issue, the United Nations agency detailed the heart-wrenching stories of some of the children affected, and co-author Laura Healy told AFP the data only revealed the "tip of the iceberg," with many more likely affected.

"We moved our belongings to the highway, where we lived for weeks," recounts Sudanese child Khalid Abdul Azim, whose flooded village was only accessible by boat.

In 2017, sisters Mia and Maia Bravo watched flames engulf their trailer in California from the back of the family minivan.&nbsp;

"I was afraid, in shock," Maia says in the report. "I would stay up all night."

Statistics on internal displacements caused by climate disasters generally do not account for the age of the victims.

However UNICEF worked with the non-governmental Internal Displacement Monitoring Center to unpick the data and reveal the hidden toll on children.

From 2016 to 2021, four types of climate disasters (floods, storms, droughts and wildfires) -- the frequency of which has increased due to global warming -- led to&nbsp;43.1 million child displacements in 44 countries, the report says.

Ninety-five per cent of those displacements were caused by floods and storms.

"It's the equivalent of about 20,000 child displacements every day," Healy told AFP, underscoring how the children affected are then at risk of suffering other traumas, such as being separated from their parents or falling victim to child traffickers.

The data reflect the number of displacements and not the number of children affected, as the same child could be uprooted more than once.

The figures do not allow for a distinction between those evacuated before a weather event, and those forced to leave in the wake of a disaster.

And, according to Healy, the number of displacements due to drought is "radically underreported," because they are less sudden and thus more difficult to quantify.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg based on the available data that we have," she said.&nbsp;

"The reality is with the impacts of climate change, or better tracking of displacement when it comes to slow onset events, that the number of children who are uprooted from their homes is going to be much greater."

<h2>'Far too slowly'&nbsp;</h2>

The UNICEF report offers some partial predictions, for specific events.

Floods linked to overflowing rivers could spark 96 million child displacements in the next 30 years, while cyclonic winds could force 10.3 million displacements, it says. Storm surges could lead to 7.2 million displacements.

None of those estimates includes preventive evacuations.

"For those who are forced to flee, the fear and impact can be especially devastating, with worry of whether they will return home, resume school, or be forced to move again," UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said in a statement.&nbsp;

"Moving may have saved their lives, but it's also very disruptive," Russell said.

"As the impacts of climate change escalate, so too will climate-driven movement. We have the tools and knowledge to respond to this escalating challenge for children, but we are acting far too slowly."

UNICEF called on world leaders to take up the issue at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai in November and December.

Healy says children, including those already forced to move, must be prepared "to live in a climate change world."

Even if the intensifying effects of climate change are affecting wide swathes of the planet, the UNICEF report shines the light on particularly vulnerable countries.

China, India and the Philippines are the countries with the largest number of displacements (nearly 23 million in six years) because of their huge populations and their geographic locations -- but also because of their preventive evacuation plans.

But in proportional terms, Africa and small island nations are most at risk -- in Dominica, 76 per cent of all children were displaced from 2016 to 2021. For Cuba and Saint-Martin, that figure was more than 30 per cent.

After the advisory was issued, tsunami waves, which measured up to 30 cm in height, were seen on at least one of the Izu islands. Originally, the weather forecasters had estimated waves of around one metre for the remote chain of islands located south of Tokyo.

People living in the coastal areas and close to the river mouths were advised to retreat to higher ground. &nbsp;“A 1-meter wave may not seem significant. ... But encountering such a wave can be extremely dangerous and it can sweep you off your feet,” &nbsp;said a Meteorological Agency representative, while speaking at a press conference.

But encountering such a wave can be extremely dangerous and it can sweep you off your feet,” said a Meteorological Agency representative, while speaking at a press conference. The US Geological Survey stated that the area was hit by a series of offshore earthquakes on Thursday morning. The agency stated that the quake was not felt in Tokyo or on the islands. WATCH | Japan says workers stole possibly radioactive metal from Fukushima Earlier, it was predicted that the tsunami would reach the Izu islands at various times including at Hachijo-jima at 11:50 am and Izu Oshima at noon. The meteorological agency further warned of potential aftershocks, adding that there is a 10 per cent to 20 per cent chance that an earthquake of similar magnitude will occur. The residents were told to stay on alert for the next week. As per the agency, throughout the last week, seismic activity was observed in the same area of the western Pacific Ocean. Japan issues tsunami warning for Izu Islands after 6.6 magnitude quake

The wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan on Thursday (Oct 5) announced that it has started releasing a second batch of treated radioactive wastewater into the sea after the ending of the first round of discharges smoothly.

Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings stated that a pump was activated by the workers to dilute the treated water with huge amounts of seawater, which sends the mixture slowly into the ocean via an underground tunnel.

The release of the first batch of wastewater from the plant started on August 24 and ended on September 11. Amid the first release which continued for 17 days, TEPCO stated that 7,800 tonnes of treated water was discharged from 10 tanks.

In around 1,000 tanks present at the plant, around 1.34 million tonnes of radioactive wastewater gets stored. The water has been accumulating at the plant since the time it was crippled by the tsunami and a massive earthquake in 2011. &nbsp;

In the second round of discharge, TEPCO has been planning to release, into the Pacific Ocean, another batch of 7,800 metric tonnes of treated wastewater over a period of 17 days.&nbsp;

<h2>Discharge of&nbsp;radioactive wastewater 'unavoidable': TEPCO</h2>

TEPCO and the government stated that the wastewater has been treated to reduce radioactive materials to safe levels, and then has been diluted with seawater so that it can be made much safer compared to the international standards.

They stated that they cannot avoid discharging the water into the sea because the tanks will be filled to their capacity by next year and space at the plant will be required for its decommissioning, which is likely to take decades.&nbsp;

The wastewater discharges have been opposed strongly by fishing groups and neighbouring countries, including South Korea, where protest rallies were staged by hundreds of people. All imports of Japanese seafood were banned by China, which badly hurt Japanese seafood exporters.

The European South Observatory (ESO), in its latest photo, captured a rosy red nebula in its full glow.&nbsp;

The large cloud of gas and dust, which is known as IC1284, is an emission nebula which is a form of diffuse and bright cloud of ionized gas which emits its own light.&nbsp;

The emission nebula, which was captured in the centre of the image, glows red due to the formation of an active star and the fusion of hydrogen in the area.&nbsp;

"Its rosy glow comes from electrons within the hydrogen atoms: they're excited by the radiation from young stars, but then they lose energy and emit a specific colour or wavelength of light," said ESO officials, in a statement.

Tiger&nbsp;populations are on the rise in the jungles of India and Nepal and the predators are roaming ever closer to villages, sparking a race among conservationists to find ways of avoiding conflict.

They are increasingly finding solutions with artificial intelligence, a bunch of technologies designed to reason and make decisions like humans.

Experts from Clemson University in South Carolina and several NGOs published research last month on their work using AI-enabled cameras that they say could help revolutionise&nbsp;tiger&nbsp;conservation.

They placed tiny devices around enclosures in the two South Asian nations, both to protect villagers from the predators -- and the predators from poachers.

According to their research, published in the BioScience journal, the camera system called TrailGuard can distinguish between&nbsp;tigers&nbsp;and other species and relay images to park rangers or villagers within seconds.

"We have to find ways for people and&nbsp;tigers&nbsp;and other wildlife to coexist," Eric Dinerstein, one of the authors of the report, told AFP.

"Technology can offer us a tremendous opportunity to achieve that goal very cheaply."

<h2>Elephants and Amazon loggers&nbsp;</h2>

The research claims the cameras were immediately effective, picking up a&nbsp;tiger&nbsp;just 300 metres from a village, and on another occasion identifying a team of poachers.

They say their system was the first AI camera to identify and transmit a picture of a&nbsp;tiger, and it has almost wiped out false alarms -- when traps are tripped by passing boars or falling leaves.

The scheme is one of several putting an AI spin on the established ideas of wildlife surveillance.

Researchers in Gabon are using AI to sift their camera trap images and are now trying a warning system for elephants.

Teams in the Amazon are piloting equipment that can detect the sounds of chainsaws, tractors and other machinery associated with deforestation.

And US tech titan Google&nbsp;teamed up with researchers and NGOs four years ago to collect millions of images from camera traps.

The project, called Wildlife Insights, automates the process of identifying species and labelling images, saving many hours of laborious work for researchers.

Conservationists like Dinerstein, who also leads the tech team at the Resolve NGO, are sure that technology is helping their cause.

<h2>'Early warning system'&nbsp;</h2>

Their goal is to ensure that 30 per cent of the Earth's land and oceans are designated protected zones by 2030, as&nbsp;agreed by dozens of governments last year, with that number eventually going up to 50 per cent.

Those zones will need to be monitored, and animals will need to move safely between protected areas.

"That's what we're shooting for, and the critical element of that is an early warning system," he said.

The plight of&nbsp;tigers&nbsp;underscores the size of the challenge.

Their habitats have been devastated across Asia and their numbers in India fell to an all-time low of 1,411 in 2006, before steadily rising to current levels of around 3,500.

In the mid-20th century, India was home to an estimated 40,000.

<h2>&nbsp;'Jury still out'</h2>

Jonathan Palmer, head of conservation technology at the US-based Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), who was not involved in the study, said TrailGuard had exciting potential.

But Palmer, who helped found Wildlife Insights with Google, said the broader uses of AI in conservation were not yet settled.

"In most cases, AI species identification is still in its infancy," he said.

His NGO recommends outside verification of any species identification done by AI.

And Palmer said the "jury was out" on whether AI was better deployed in cameras at the scene or afterwards on servers or laptops.

Those uncertainties aside, Dinerstein is widening the rollout of TrailGuard -- this time with even bigger animals in his sights.

"Elephants wander outside parks all the time and it leads to a massive amount of conflict," he said.

They destroy crops, cause chaos in villages and can even cause train crashes, with dozens of deaths every year, he added.

"There's an immense opportunity here to prevent that," he said.&nbsp;

AI of the tiger: Tiny camera 'protects' predator and people

A new satellite has turned into one of the brightest things present in the night sky and has sparked concerns regarding the future of astronomy among scientists.

The bright paths of satellite BlueWalker 3 along with other new satellites are likely to shine as bright as the neighbouring planets in the night sky which will make it difficult for astronomers to observe the universe without streaks of light pollution from such satellites, stated a new study published in the journal Nature.

BlueWalker 3, which is a prototype communications satellite, has a 692-square-foot array which is a large flat surface like a mirror and reflects sunlight back to Earth.

As per the study, the magnitude of the satellite’s peak brightness is 0.4.

"The startling conclusion from our study is that the BlueWalker 3 satellite is one of the brightest things in the sky," said Meredith L. Rawls, co-author of the paper and astronomy research scientist in the Department of Astronomy and DiRAC at the University of Washington, while speaking to Newsweek.

"Keep in mind, astronomers use a magnitude system, which is "backwards"—brighter objects have smaller magnitudes, so 0.4 is quite bright," explained Rawls.

&nbsp;"There are only about six stars that are brighter in the night sky than this. For context, the way magnitudes work is, something that is magnitude 2 is only about 40 percent as bright as something that is magnitude 1. The unaided eye can see objects down to about magnitude 7 from a very dark site. Venus' apparent magnitude in the sky is about -4 (it's extremely bright!),” she added.

<h2>Light pollution hindering detection of asteroids</h2>

A negative magnitude reflects that the object is brighter. The magnitude of the sun is &nbsp;-27, while that of the full moon is -13.

"While there is only one BlueWalker 3 so far, it is important to characterise its brightness and understand its impact, since many groups are planning to launch many bright satellites to LEO [low Earth orbit] in the near future," Rawls stated.

The problems arising from BlueWalker and other bright satellites in the night sky are because of the amount of light they are reflecting back to the ground.

In an article published on Astronomy.com, Rawls explained that the light reflected by satellites will hinder the detection of other objects, which include near-Earth asteroids, during the twilight hours.

"The problems here on Earth range from interference with astronomical observatories doing sky surveys to a possible interference with migrating birds being misdirected due to its appearance," said Brad Young, co-author and lead coordinator of visual observing at the International Astronomical Union Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference, which is based in Paris, while speaking to Newsweek.

Humans have done the impossible! The brightest object in the sky now is not a celestial body anymore

In a breakthrough investigation carried out in May, the scientists discovered that the inner core of the moon is a solid ball and has a density similar to that of iron. With this discovery, the researchers hope to finally settle the long debate about whether the inner heart of the moon is molten or solid which will lead to a more accurate understanding of the history of the moon and also of the solar system.&nbsp;

"Our results," said a team headed by astronomer Arthur Briaud of the French National Centre for Scientific Research in France, "question the evolution of the moon's magnetic field thanks to its demonstration of the existence of the inner core and support a global mantle overturn scenario that brings substantial insights on the timeline of the lunar bombardment in the first billion years of the Solar System."

Investigating the interior composition of the celestial objects in the solar system is accomplished most effectively through seismic data. The generation of acoustic waves by earthquakes and the way they reflect the material inside the moon or any planet help scientists create a detailed map of the interior of the object.&nbsp;

<h2>Denser material falls towards the centre of moon: Study</h2>

The lunar seismic data was collected by the Apollo mission, however, its resolution is too low to determine the state of the inner core. It was known that there is a fluid core but what it encompasses remained a part of the debate. The solid inner core's models and the entirely fluid core work equally well with the data of Apollo.&nbsp;

To understand what is inside the core, data was collected by Briaud and his colleagues from space missions and lunar laser ranging experiments were carried out to compile a profile of different lunar characteristics. These were the degree of its deformation through its gravitational interaction with Earth, the difference in its distance from Earth, and its density.

The scientists then conducted modelling with different core types to figure out which most closely matched the observational data. Several interesting findings were made by the researchers. The researchers figured out that denser material falls towards the centre inside the moon and less dense material rises upwards.

The activity has been proposed as a way of explaining the existence of certain elements in the moon's volcanic regions. The research of the team added another point to the "for" tally of evidence.&nbsp;

With this discovery, the researchers hope to finally settle the long debate about whether the inner heart of the moon is molten or solid which will lead to a more accurate understanding of the history of the moon and also of the solar system. "Our results," said a team headed by astronomer Arthur Briaud of the French National Centre for Scientific Research in France, "question the evolution of the moon's magnetic field thanks to its demonstration of the existence of the inner core and support a global mantle overturn scenario that brings substantial insights on the timeline of the lunar bombardment in the first billion years of the Solar System." The generation of acoustic waves by earthquakes and the way they reflect the material inside the moon or any planet help scientists create a detailed map of the interior of the object. Denser material falls towards the centre of moon: Study The lunar seismic data was collected by the Apollo mission, however, its resolution is too low to determine the state of the inner core. It was known that there is a fluid core but what it encompasses remained a part of the debate. The solid inner core's models and the entirely fluid core work equally well with the data of Apollo. Several interesting findings were made by the researchers. The researchers figured out that denser material falls towards the centre inside the moon and less dense material rises upwards. The activity has been proposed as a way of explaining the existence of certain elements in the moon's volcanic regions. The research of the team added another point to the "for" tally of evidence. Scientists carry out breakthrough investigation, reveal what's inside the moon

As per a new study, the "good" HDL cholesterol is not as healthy as experts once believed. The new study, which was published in Neurology on Wednesday (Oct 4), discovered that having either high or low levels of high-density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol increases the risk of dementia in older adults. &nbsp;

The research suggests that there is more evidence which shows it is important to maintain HDL cholesterol within a certain range for cardiovascular and brain health. &nbsp;

“The relationship between HDL cholesterol and dementia is more complex than we previously thought," stated the study’s lead author, Erin Ferguson. Ferguson is a doctoral student pursuing epidemiology at the University of California San Francisco. "While the magnitude of this relationship is relatively small, it’s important,” he added.&nbsp;

The results of the study showed a correlation between dementia and HDL cholesterol but failed to prove that high or low levels of the lipid directly led to dementia.&nbsp;

The study, which was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute on Aging, considered more than 184,000 adults with an average age of 70. When the study started, none of the adults had dementia.&nbsp;

<h2>More than 25,000 people developed dementia during study</h2>

The electronic records from the Kaiser Permanente Northern California health plan and a combination of surveys were used by the researchers to track health behaviours, cholesterol levels and if someone developed dementia in a time span of 13 years. &nbsp;

During that period, more than 25,000 people had developed dementia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asked people to maintain their total cholesterol at about 150 mg/dL, with LDL at or below 100 mg/dL. For a long time, low-density lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol has been believed to have a deadly impact on the cardiovascular system.

The participants of the study were divided into three groups on the basis of their HDL cholesterol levels and other dementia risk factors which included diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and how often a person drinks. &nbsp;

In the study, the average HDL cholesterol level was 53.7 mg/dL, within the recommended range of 50 mg/dL in women and 40 mg/dL in men.&nbsp;
