US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during a solidarity visit to Tel Aviv on Thursday (Oct 12), said that his country will "always" back Israel. He is the most senior US official to visit Israel since a Hamas terror attack on Saturday (Oct 7) that killed nearly 1,300 mostly civilian Israelis led to a sudden war between the two sides.

Blinken, however, added that the Palestinians also have "legitimate aspirations" which do not get represented by Hamas.

"You may be strong enough on your own to defend yourself. But as long as America exists, you will never, ever have to. We will always be there by your side" said Blinken, during his meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Blinken's trip came even as Israel's Army continued pounding Hamas after their brutal attack over the weekend. Blinken further confirmed the new death toll for Americans in that attack, stating that at least 25 US citizens were among those killed.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden extended his unwavering support towards Israel and did not appeal for restraint against Hamas

However, Blinken emphasised the need for a peace settlement between the two - an idea that has been resisted by right-wing Netanyahu for long.

"Anyone who wants peace and justice must condemn Hamas' reign of terror. We know Hamas doesn't represent the Palestinian people, or their legitimate aspirations to live with equal measures of security, freedom, justice opportunity and dignity," Blinken stated.

I come before you also as a Jew: Blinken

Talking about his family background, Blinken, who is Jewish, remembered how his grandfather had to flee from anti-Semitic pogroms in Russia and that his stepfather was able to survive Nazi concentration camps.

"I come before you not only as the United States secretary of state but also as a Jew," stated Blinken.

"I also come before you as a husband and father of young children. It's impossible for me to look at the photos of families killed, such as the mother, father and three small children murdered as they sheltered in their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz, and not think of my own children," he added.

Blinken further promised that the Congress and the Biden administration would work together to meet Israel's military requests.

"As Israel's defence needs evolve, we will work with Congress to make sure that they're met," he stated.

Speaking in a press conference with Blinken, Netanyahu voiced appreciation for the support extended by the US and stated that Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, needs to be treated like the Islamic State group.

US will always 'back' Israel, says Secretary of State Blinken to PM Netanyahu on solidarity visit

When Hamas fired a barrage of rockets on Israel as its citizens slept in calmness on October 7, unaware of the sudden and shocking attack coming their way, the terror group announced it as the beginning of Operation "Al Aqsa Flood". As the sudden attacks that targeted civilians inside Israel quickly took the shape of yet another war, what remained as a focal point of tension between Israel and Palestine was the Al Aqsa, a place which always found itself in the conflict between Arabs and Jews.

As per a Reuters report, the operation was planned and named "Al Aqsa Flood" by the mastermind of the attack Mohammed Deif in retaliation for raids carried out at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque by Israel.

Deif started planning the attack in May 2021 after the Arab and Muslim world were left enraged by a raid carried out by Israel on Al Aqsa mosque.

"It was triggered by scenes and footage of Israel storming Al Aqsa mosque during Ramadan, beating worshippers, attacking them, dragging elderly and young men out of the mosque. All this fuelled and ignited the anger," a source was quoted as saying in Gaza.

Commenting on the attack by Hamas that left Israel rattled, spokesperson for Israeli Ambassador to India Naor Gilon Guy Nir said to WION, "This is a terror attack that needs to be condemned. Terror is terror. All over the world. Throughout history - you can see that Israel's citizens unite in difficult situations. People help each other, and they become stronger when facing difficulties."

However, this is not the first time Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is part of a larger compound located in the Old City of Jerusalem, has been drawn into a conflict.

The disputed mosque complex has been at the centre of the Israel-Palestine conflict for years.

What is the significance of Al Aqsa mosque for Muslims and Jews?

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is located on a hill, which Jews call Har ha-Bayit or the Temple Mount and the Muslims refer to as al-Haram al-Sharif, or the Noble Sanctuary, in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Across the globe, Muslims consider the mosque as Islam's third holiest place after Mecca and Medina. Al-Aqsa compound houses two holy places - the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, which is a seventh-century structure where the Prophet Muhammad is believed to have ascended to heaven.

The mosque was constructed on the hill in 8th century AD.

As per the Jews, the compound is where once the Biblical Jewish temples stood.

However, the Jews are forbidden from entering the compound and praying by Jewish law and the Israeli Rabbinate, since they consider it too holy to tread upon.

The Western Wall of the compound, known as the Wailing Wall to Jews, is considered as the last remnant of the Second Temple.

However, the Muslims believe it is the al-Buraq Wall where al-Buraq, the animal upon which Prophet Muhammad ascended to the sky, was tied by him.

The Jews further consider the Temple Mount as their holiest site because they believe that their first temple was built by King Solomon 3,000 years ago.

How did the conflict around the Al-Aqsa Mosque unfold?

The contested site became a matter of concern after East Jerusalem went under the control of Israel after the Six-Day War in 1967.

Officially, the control of the mosque and its area was given by Israel to an Islamic group. However, the Israeli forces were allowed to visit the site and also gave permission to Christian pilgrims to visit the Temple Mount, which is considered as holy by them also for its connection with events in the life of Jesus Christ.

A new tunnel was opened near the compound of the al-Aqsa Mosque in 1996 which was seen by Palestinians as a violation of their sacred site. This led to clashes which resulted in more than 80 deaths in just three days.

After 2005, some Jewish religious factions demanded that more rights should be granted to them for visiting the place and expressed their aspiration of reconstructing an old temple in place of the Dome of the Rock which they believed once stood there, further sparking controversy and debate.

The tensions reached a crucial point in 2014 after the assault on Yehuda Glick, who was a Jewish religious leader.

Responding to the attack, Israel closed the access to Al-Aqsa, a step which was not taken since 1967. Palestinians were already restricted from entering the compound by Israelis through various methods, like building the separation wall in the early 2000s, which stops Palestinians from the West Bank from getting entry into Israel.

In March and April of 2014, tear gas and stun grenades were used by the Israeli police against Palestinians within Al-Aqsa which drew international condemnation.

This ignited protests by Palestinians which soon turned into violent clashes and marked the start of the second Palestinian uprising called the al-Aqsa Intifada.

The clashes at the site of Al Aqsa Mosque in 2021 also triggered a 10-day war with Gaza.

Speaking about the unending conflict that revolves around the Al Aqsa mosque to WION, International Crisis Group's Programme Director, Middle East & North Africa Joost R. A wealth of grave goods, which included hundreds of large wine jars - some of which were sealed - were uncovered by the archaeologists in the tomb of the First Dynasty Egyptian queen Meret-Neith. The archaeologists said that these funereal riches have bolstered the case that Meret-Neith was a person of great significance, maybe even the first female pharaoh of Egypt.

Meret-Neith is said to have existed some 5,000 years ago and served as Egypt's queen sometime around 2950 BCE. At the very least, Meret-Neith was a queen-consort and regent. As per experts, she may have been a ruler or a pharaoh, however, archaeologists have failed to determine her position with certainty. As per historians, the first queen who is believed to have assumed the full royal titulary was Sobekneferu. However, she is believed to have lived a millennium later.

There is definitely major evidence in the tomb of Meret-Neith at the royal necropolis of Abydos which proves her importance. She was buried in between the final resting places of male pharaohs, and her own tomb was of great richness and comparable size. This has helped experts agree that she was probably the most powerful woman of her time.

An international team of archaeologists, headed by Christiana Kohler of the University of Vienna, worked with the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to discover more about the grand monument in which Meret-Neith was buried years ago.

Along with the wine jars, which were discovered with grape seeds and remains of the wine that were once held by them, the researchers also stumbled upon inscriptions which clearly stated that Meret-Neith was responsible for important offices like the royal treasury. This further added to the previous evidence about the significance of the queen.

New technologies used to understand the construction of tomb

The archaeologists also used new archaeological technologies to better understand the way in which the burial monument was built.

The funeral complex of Meret-Neith, which was built using unbaked brick, clay, and wood, also had the tombs of 41 servants and courtiers who were interred with her.

Archaeologists find remnants of 5,000-year-old wine in ancient tomb of Egypt

A sealed 2,000-year-old tomb, which had a fresco of Cerberus - Ancient Greek mythology's three-headed dog - was uncovered in Italy.

The archaeologists discovered the burial chamber in Giugliano, a suburb of Naples, which is believed to be around 2,000 years old.

It was discovered on a farmland during an archaeological survey which was done before the maintenance work on the city's water system started.

Previously, a large number of burial sites were found by archaeologists in the same area that likely date from the Roman Republic era (510-31 BC) to the Roman Imperial Age (31 BC – AD 476).

The undiscovered tomb features various frescoes, which are present on its walls and ceilings in largely pristine condition.

In the various frescoes, the most notable mythological figure drawn is that of the three-headed dog, believed to guard the gates of the underworld. Because of this, the burial chamber was named the 'Tomb of Cerburus'.

The attention-grabbing painting represents the 12th and most dangerous of the Labours of Hercules when he was guided by Mercury to Hades to capture the three-headed monster dog Cerberus.

Other mythological figures present in the frescoes were ichthyocentaurs, a centaurine-type sea god which has a human's upper body, the tail of a fish and the lower anterior half and forelegs similar to that of a horse.

The archaeologists discovered the burial chamber after they spotted a wall which was built using an ancient Roman construction technique, which is called opus incertum.

An unprecedented discovery

To enter the burial chamber, tiles covering the ceiling opening had to be removed by the archaeologists carefully, which led them to an 'unprecedented' discovery.

"The tomb has frescoed ceilings and walls in perfect condition, with mythological scenes that go all around the room and figurative representations among which, a three-headed dog stands out," stated Mariano Nuzzo, the superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the Naples metropolitan area.

"Three painted klìnai, an altar with vessels for libations, the deceased still placed on the funeral beds with rich objects – complete the picture of a discovery which, in this area, is unprecedented," he added.

There has been continuous work to excavate more of the tomb without damaging its interiors.

"The emotion aroused by the privilege of such a discovery is indescribable. The territory of Giugliano, after years of oblivion, is finally returning significant vestiges of its glorious past, to be preserved and protected, thanks to a common effort," Nuzzo added.

An unprecedented discovery To enter the burial chamber, tiles covering the ceiling opening had to be removed by the archaeologists carefully, which led them to an 'unprecedented' discovery. 2,000-year-old 'Tomb of Cerberus' with fresco of three-headed dog uncovered in Italy

On October 9, two days after a sudden and barbaric attack by Hamas on Israel which killed more than 1,200 Israeli civilians, Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant took a stern stance and ordered the "complete seige" of Hamas-governed Gaza Strip.

"I have given an order - Gaza will be under complete siege. There will be no electricity, food or fuel (delivered to Gaza). We are fighting barbaric (terrorists) and will respond accordingly," Gallant had said in a statement, as Israel prepared for its most violent offensive against Gaza, a narrow strip of land on the Mediterranean coast.

As Israel continues to pound the Gaza strip and reduce buildings to rubble in retaliation, the estimated two million people living in its neighbourhood scramble to find shelter amid their dying hope of survival.

History of the embattled Gaza Strip

The Gaza Strip is a narrow strip of land which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and shares its borders with Egypt and Israel. It covers a total area of about 365 sq km, which is roughly as big as Washington DC.

An area with thousands of years of history, the evidence of the first human settlements in Gaza dates back as far as 3,500 BC. Through the centuries, various empires – Romans, Byzantines, Persians and Egyptians – ruled this strip of land, after which it was conquered by Muslim forces in the 7th century AD. Later, it became a part of the Ottoman Empire and was captured by the British Empire in World War I after the fall of the Ottomans in 1918.

After the 1948 Arab-Israeli War marked the end of the British Mandate for Palestine, Gaza went into the hands of Egypt. An All-Palestine government was established in Gaza which worked as a puppet regime for Egypt. However, it was dissolved in 1959 by Gamal Abdel Nasser and the military rulers of Cairo seized control of the Strip.

The coalition of Arab states threatened Israel because of which it launched preemptive airstrikes against Egyptian military facilities and airfields in June 1967. The Israeli troops seized the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip from the Egyptians and also captured the Golan Heights from Syrians and the West Bank as well as East Jerusalem from the Jordanians. The Six-Day War came to an end with the victory of Israel.

The Gaza Strip remained under Israel's control for the next 38 years, during which the region saw the establishment of 21 Jewish settlements. In the Camp David Accords of 1978, Israel agreed to remove its military occupation from Sinai in exchange for the establishment of diplomatic ties with Egypt.

As per the accords, it was also agreed that the rights of the Palestinian people would be recognised and an autonomous governing body would be formed in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Oslo Accords and the birth of Hamas

The historic Oslo Peace Accords was signed between Israel and Palestine in 1993 which led to the creation of the Palestinian National Authority. As per the Accords, Palestinians were granted limited control in Gaza, and Jericho in the West Bank.

Hamas – a militant Palestinian organisation which was founded with the aim of fighting against the Israeli occupation and restoring Islamic rule in Palestine – turned into a rival of Yasser Arafat's Fatah party, which was leading the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

Bombings were carried out by Islamic Jihad and Hamas with the aim to derail the peace process, which led to the imposition of more restrictions by Israel on the movement of Palestinians out of Gaza creating a dire humanitarian situation.

The second Palestinian intifada in 2000 saw suicide bombings, Israeli air strikes, shooting attacks by Palestinians and the destruction of Gaza International Airport, which was the only direct link of the Palestinians to the outside world.

Israel's withdrawal and Hamas' 'complete control' of Gaza

In 2005, Israel withdrew its military forces and around 9,000 Israeli settlers from Gaza and the enclave was left to be governed by the Palestinian Authority. In 2006, Hamas took complete control of Gaza after winning the elections.

Speaking about the influence of Hamas on Palestinians to WION, International Crisis Group's Programme Director, Middle East & North Africa Joost R. Hiltermann said, "Palestinians in Gaza support an end to Israel's military occupation everywhere in Palestine and of the Israeli siege on Gaza. For better or worse, Hamas represents those aspirations, and this is why it has popular support."

Since 2007, Israel has imposed land, air and sea blockade on Gaza which had a devastating effect on Palestinians. However, Israel has defended its action by saying that this allows it to control the borders of Gaza and protect Israeli citizens from Hamas.

Gaza Strip has also been under surveillance for years. It is the blockade and surveillance that has forced Human Rights Watch to call the Gaza Strip an "open-air prison".

Today, as the 75 years of conflict over the Gaza Strip reaches its pinnacle, the question arises for whom is the war being fought and what will it achieve eventually?

"If Israel destroys not only Gaza but also Hamas' or anyone's ability to govern, then it won't have any choice but to re-occupy the territory," stated Hiltermann.

Explained: Gaza Strip and the struggle for survival for millions of its residents

The Titan submersible's remaining debris and presumed human remains were recovered on Tuesday (Oct 10) by the US Coast Guard, months after the submersible suffered a catastrophic implosion while it was on its way to explore the wreckage of Titanic ship.

All five passengers on board the 23,000-pound vessel Titan, which was roughly the size of a minivan, lost their lives shortly after the vessel's contact with its mother ship was disconnected, around 1 hour and 45 minutes after the submarine dived into the North Atlantic Ocean towards the Titanic.

Last week, the marine safety engineers from the Coast Guard’s Marine Board of Investigation recovered the evidence from the North Atlantic Ocean seafloor and “successfully transferred to a US port for cataloguing and analysis,” stated a release from the Coast Guard.

“Additional presumed human remains were carefully recovered from within Titan’s debris and transported for analysis by US medical professionals,” the release stated.

The salvage mission was a follow-up to initial recovery operations after the implosion of the submersible, stated the Coast Guard.

Steps of forensic testing to be determined

The Marine Board of Investigation stated that they have been co-ordinating with the National Transportation Safety Board and other international investigative agencies for scheduling a “joint evidence review” of the debris recovered from the ocean, after which the next steps of forensic testing will be determined.

However, the board will continue interviewing witnesses and analysing evidence “ahead of a public hearing regarding this tragedy,” it said.

The failure of Titan to resurface on June 18 led to a massive international search which captured the attention of the world for days. The officials on June 22 confirmed that the Titan submersible had suffered a “catastrophic implosion.”

The five passengers who lost their lives were identified as OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush; businessman Hamish Harding; diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet; billionaire Shahzada Dawood; and Dawood’s 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said that it had recovered presumed human remains as well as parts of the Titan after locating the debris field which was at a depth of 12,500 feet (3,800 metres).

The officials had offloaded the materials at an unnamed port. Australian journalist Cheng Lei, who was detained by China for more than three years on national security charges, reached home on Wednesday (Oct 11) after getting released, said Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

48-year-old Cheng worked as a business television anchor for Chinese state television when the officials detained her in August 2020 on charges of allegedly providing state secrets to another country.

Cheng, who was secretly tried in March 2022, reached Melbourne where she reunited with her family and two children, said Albanese, while speaking at a press conference.

"(The) government has been seeking this for a long period of time and her return will be warmly welcomed not just by her family and friends but by all Australians," he stated. He added that the journalist was released after the completion of legal processes in China.

Meanwhile, China's State Security Ministry stated that Cheng pleaded guilty to charges of sending state secrets related to her work illegally abroad for a state media outlet. It added that she was deported after she served her prison sentence of two years and 11 months.

Australian diplomats were not allowed to enter her trial and Cheng never made any public comment on her case.

Repeated concerns were raised by Australia regarding her detention which came as China increased blocks on Australian exports amid an escalating diplomatic dispute between the two countries.

"She is a very strong and resilient person," stated Albanese, who had spoken to Cheng and welcomed the journalist home on behalf of the country.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also met Cheng when she arrived at the airport.

In a letter to the Australian government which was publicly released in August, Cheng spoke about how she is missing her children, aged 11 and 14, who have been residing in Melbourne with their grandmother.

"In my cell, the sunlight shines through the window but I can stand in it for only 10 hours a year," she said in a letter, which she called a "love letter to 25 million people". The letter was the journalist's first public statement since her arrest.

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has asked Harvard to release the names of their 30 students who signed a letter which blamed Israel solely for the terror attacks by Hamas that took place over the weekend.

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman has asked Harvard to release the names of their 30 students who signed a letter which blamed Israel solely for the terror attacks by Hamas that took place over the weekend. Pershing Square Capital Management’s CEO Ackman, who completed both his bachelor's and MBA from Harvard, appealed to the university to release the names of the students so that they are not hired by him and other executives in the future. "I have been asked by a number of CEOs if Harvard would release a list of the members of each of the organizations that have issued the letter assigning sole responsibility for Hamas’ heinous acts to Israel, so as to ensure that none of us inadvertently hire any of their members," wrote Ackman in a post on X on Tuesday (Oct 10). The post included a copy of the letter along with the Harvard groups that had signed on it. "I would like to know so I know never to hire these people," wrote Jonathan Neman, CEO and co-founder of Sweetgreen, in response to a post from Ackman. "Same," wrote David Duel, CEO of EasyHealth, replying to Neman's post. 8 Deadliest Wars and Conflicts That Broke Out In 21st Century

On the morning of October 7, Hamas militants launched one of the biggest offensive from the Gaza Strip against Israel which they called “Operation al-Aqsa Storm”. A barrage of rockets was fired over Israel and Hamas militants entered into nearby Israeli settlements and opened fired at civilians as Tel Aviv formally declared it war.

The Russia-Ukraine war is continuing between Russia, Russian-backed separatists, and Ukraine. It started in February 2014 when Ukraine’s pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych was removed from power and Crimea was later annexed by Russia, which also extended support to pro-Russian separatists in their fight against the Ukrainian military in the Donbas region. The war reached its zenith in 2022, when a full-scale invasion was launched by Russia in Ukraine.

The Syrian Civil War refers to the ongoing civil war between the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad-led Syrian Arab Republic and domestic and foreign forces, which oppose both the Syrian government and each other, in different combinations. The war has led to an estimated 470,000–610,000 violent deaths, which makes it the 21st century's second deadliest conflict.

Darfur conflict, which is also known as the Land Cruiser War, was an armed conflict in Sudan's Darfur region, which started in February 2003 when the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) rebel groups accused the government of oppressing the country's non-Arab population.

The Iraq War was an armed conflict in the country from 2003 to 2011. It started with the United States' invasion of Iraq which overthrew Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist government. After the fall of the government, the insurgency opposed the post-invasion Iraqi government and the coalition forces.

Just weeks after the September 11 attack, the United States started carrying out air strikes against Afghanistan's Taliban regime. By December 2001, the Taliban's government was toppled from power and an internationally recognised Islamic Republic was established three years later. Around 30,000 Afghan troops and police and 31,000 Afghan civilians lost their lives between 2001 and 2016.

The Boko Haram insurgency started in July 2009 when an armed rebellion was started by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram against Nigeria's government. The conflict started over the long-standing issues of religious violence between the country's Christian and Muslim communities, and the insurgents ultimately aimed to create an Islamic state in the region.

The Yemeni civil war started between the Mahdi al-Mashat-led Supreme Political Council and the Rashad al-Alimi-led Presidential Leadership Council in late 2014. Both of them claim to have constituted the country's official government. According to the United Nations, more than 150,000 people were killed in Yemen, and more than 227,000 lost their lives because of an ongoing famine.
