On the morning of October 7, Hamas militants launched one of the biggest offensive from the Gaza Strip against Israel which they called “Operation al-Aqsa Storm”. A barrage of rockets was fired over Israel and Hamas militants entered into nearby Israeli settlements and opened fired at civilians as Tel Aviv formally declared it war.
The Russia-Ukraine war is continuing between Russia, Russian-backed separatists, and Ukraine. It started in February 2014 when Ukraine’s pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych was removed from power and Crimea was later annexed by Russia, which also extended support to pro-Russian separatists in their fight against the Ukrainian military in the Donbas region. The war reached its zenith in 2022, when a full-scale invasion was launched by Russia in Ukraine.
The Syrian Civil War refers to the ongoing civil war between the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad-led Syrian Arab Republic and domestic and foreign forces, which oppose both the Syrian government and each other, in different combinations. The war has led to an estimated 470,000–610,000 violent deaths, which makes it the 21st century's second deadliest conflict.
Darfur conflict, which is also known as the Land Cruiser War, was an armed conflict in Sudan's Darfur region, which started in February 2003 when the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) rebel groups accused the government of oppressing the country's non-Arab population.
The Iraq War was an armed conflict in the country from 2003 to 2011. It started with the United States' invasion of Iraq which overthrew Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist government. After the fall of the government, the insurgency opposed the post-invasion Iraqi government and the coalition forces.
Just weeks after the September 11 attack, the United States started carrying out air strikes against Afghanistan's Taliban regime. By December 2001, the Taliban's government was toppled from power and an internationally recognised Islamic Republic was established three years later. Around 30,000 Afghan troops and police and 31,000 Afghan civilians lost their lives between 2001 and 2016.
The Boko Haram insurgency started in July 2009 when an armed rebellion was started by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram against Nigeria's government. The conflict started over the long-standing issues of religious violence between the country's Christian and Muslim communities, and the insurgents ultimately aimed to create an Islamic state in the region.
The Yemeni civil war started between the Mahdi al-Mashat-led Supreme Political Council and the Rashad al-Alimi-led Presidential Leadership Council in late 2014. Both of them claim to have constituted the country's official government. According to the United Nations, more than 150,000 people were killed in Yemen, and more than 227,000 lost their lives because of an ongoing famine.
