Israel-Hamas war: Israeli embassy staffer stabbed in Beijing in suspected terror attack

The geomagnetic storms can impact the Earth in weird and wonderful ways, ranging from radio blackouts to northern lights, and also affect the birds in unexpected ways.

Scientists have discovered that throughout the world, migratory birds stay on the ground and do not fly amid space weather events because of the effects of the geomagnetic storms.&nbsp;

It was found that the number of migrating birds flying decreased between 9 and 17 percent when severe space weather events occurred and the birds that did fly faced difficulty in navigating their way to their destination, &nbsp;as per a new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Newsweek reported.&nbsp;

"Birds and other animals are well known to use the Earth's magnetic field to orient (determine which direction to fly in) and likely also to navigate," said study co-author Ben Winger, while speaking to Newsweek.

"They likely cue into geographic variation in the inclination and intensity of the magnetic field. This has mostly been studied in pigeons and in small songbirds, but it is thought that many kinds of birds have this ability," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Storms creating difficulty in navigation of birds: study</h2>

Geomagnetic storms are alterations of the magnetic fields of the Earth. They occur when the sun's solar plasma ejects coronal mass or because of solar flares.&nbsp;

These interact with electrons in the Earth's magnetosphere charge and lead to auroras and other effects across the globe. Such alterations further impact the navigation of animals and birds which use the magnetic field to find their way.

"Our study suggests that fewer birds migrate during large geomagnetic storms. Our results also suggest that in certain conditions, birds that do migrate during geomagnetic storms may have more difficulty navigating, but we only found evidence for this pattern in fall migration and during high cloud cover, when birds might not be able to use celestial navigational cues," Winger said, Newsweek reported.&nbsp;

The research also discovered that birds did find it difficult to navigate during space weather events, especially when the weather conditions were overcast.

"Our study cannot specifically speak to birds getting lost as our methods (radar monitoring) do not allow us to track individual birds," Winger stated.&nbsp;

"However, a separate recent study from earlier this year found evidence that migratory birds likely do get lost in some of the same geomagnetic conditions affecting the birds in our dataset," he added.&nbsp;

A majority of the Israeli population, almost accounting&nbsp;for 56 per cent, believe that the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must resign after the ongoing conflict with Hamas ends, reported the Jerusalem Post on Thursday (Oct 12). This perspective drew the support of 28 per cent of coalition voters, according to the poll released by the Dialog Centre.&nbsp;

The polls revealed that four out of five Jewish Israelis have been blaming Netanyahu and the government for the Operation Al-Aqsa Flood carried out by Hamas against Israel.

Many Israelis blame govt for Hamas attack, believe Netanyahu must resign: Poll

Xbox maker&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;closed its $69 billion deal for Activision Blizzard on Friday, swelling its heft in the video-gaming market with best-selling titles including "Call of Duty" to better compete with industry leader Sony.

Britain finally cleared&nbsp;Microsoft's acquisition of Activision earlier in the day after it forced the Xbox owner to sell the steaming rights to address its competition concerns.

The deal was blocked in April by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) which said it could give the US&nbsp;computing giant a stranglehold over the nascent cloud gaming market.

But the regulator ripped up its play book by reopening the case after&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;agreed to sell the streaming rights to Activision's games to Ubisoft Entertainment, with remedies to ensure the terms were enforceable.

The deal was the biggest test of the CMA's global power to take on the tech giants since Britain left the European Union.

It said "sticking to its guns" in the face of criticism from the merging companies had delivered an outcome that was better for competition, consumers and economic growth.

The CMA said&nbsp;Microsoft's concession on streaming was a "gamechanger", adding that it was the only competition agency globally to have delivered this outcome.

"The new deal will stop&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;from locking up competition in cloud gaming as this market takes off, preserving competitive prices and services for UK cloud gaming customers," it said in a statement.

Microsoft&nbsp;announced the deal in early 2022, aiming to boost its growth in console, mobile, PC, and cloud gaming to compete with the likes of Tencent as well as PlayStation-owner Sony.

The US&nbsp;Federal Trade Commission opposed the deal but after failing to stop it, the CMA was left standing alone.

The FTC is fighting on, but&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;has said it will not stop it closing the deal.

The European Commision gave the green light in May when it accepted&nbsp;Microsoft's commitments to license Activision's games like "Overwatch" and "World of Warcraft" to other platforms.

<h2>'Stuck to our guns'</h2>

The CMA's block in April drew fury from the merging parties, with&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;saying that Britain was closed for business.

The British government only offered limited support to the CMA, with the Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt saying that while he did not want to undermine its independence, regulators also needed to focus on encouraging investment.

CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell said the regulator had "delivered a clear message to&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;that the deal would be blocked unless they comprehensively addressed our concerns and we stuck to our guns on that."

She said the CMA took its decisions "free from political influence" and it would not be "swayed by corporate lobbying".

"Businesses and their advisers should be in no doubt that the tactics employed by&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;are no way to engage with the CMA," she said.

"Microsoft&nbsp;had the chance to restructure during our initial investigation but instead continued to insist on a package of measures that we told them simply wouldn't work."

Quilter Cheviot equity analyst Ben Barringer said the CMA would see it as a victory, but it would need to be careful not to over-regulate the tech sector.

"There are fears the UK is a bad place to do business and the tech industry in particular will be watching its moves closely," he said.

Microsoft&nbsp;said it was "grateful for the CMA's thorough review and decision".

"We have now crossed the final regulatory hurdle to close this acquisition, which we believe will benefit players and the gaming industry worldwide," Vice Chair and President Brad Smith said.

Activision Blizzard said: "The CMA's official approval is great news for our future with&nbsp;Microsoft, and we look forward to becoming part of the Xbox Team."

The European Commission said the new commitments given by&nbsp;Microsoft&nbsp;to the CMA did not interfere with its EU commitments.

Microsoft closes $69 billion Activision Blizzard deal after Britain's nod

The firing of more than 5,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip broke the dawn of Saturday (Oct 7), with&nbsp;Israelis woke up to one of the bloodiest terror attacks launched by Hamas while breaking the impregnable Iron Dome defence system of Tel Aviv and infiltrating the country by breaching its security barriers.

The fighters from the terrorist outfit Hamas entered the country on foot, vehicles,&nbsp;paragliders and boats,&nbsp;and Israel was caught off-guard by this sudden escalation, being seen&nbsp;as a “major intelligence failure”.

In a recorded message, the leader of Hamas’ military wing Mohammed Deif said, “Enough is enough”, as he appealed to Palestinians to take part in “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm”, which is being called the biggest military offensive by Hamas in years.

Speaking about the 'Operation Al-Aqsa Storm' being termed as the biggest attack on Israel to WION, spokesperson for Israeli Ambassador to India Naor Gilon Guy Nir said, “It is called the biggest terror attack because of the sheer magnitude of the event. Over 600 Israelis have been murdered and many have been held hostage.”

<h2>Root cause: The historical conflict between Israel and Palestine</h2>

In World War I, after the Ottoman Empire fell, Palestine – which had a population divided between Arab majority and Jewish minority, went under the control of Britain. Britain was given the task of creating a Jewish homeland in Palestine by the international community, which led to increased tensions between Arabs and Jews.

The demand for a Jewish homeland emerged as part of an ethno-nationalist movement called Zionism - which started in the late 19th century and aimed at creating a homeland for the Jews in Palestine.

In the wake of World War II and the Nazi Holocaust of Jewish people, the demand for a Jewish nation increased and it gained the support of the people. Many Jews fled Europe to save themselves from persecution, and Palestine saw a sudden influx of Jewish immigrants in the 1920s and 1940s.

As tensions escalated between Arabs and Jews, the resistance to the British regime intensified further. The United Nations adopted a partition plan in 1947, according to which Palestine was to be divided into separate Jewish and Arab states and Jerusalem was to remain under international administration.

The plan was accepted by the Jewish leadership, however, the Arabs rejected it and it was never implemented. Immediately after the partition plan was adopted, a war broke out between Arabs and Zionist settlers who were entering Palestine.

The founding of Israel was proclaimed by the Jewish leaders, with the support of the British authorities and the United Nations, in 1948. The war saw intervention by neighbouring Arab countries with military force.

In 1949, the first Arab-Israeli War ended with the victory of Israel and 750,000 Palestinians were reportedly displaced, which they called Al Nakba, or "The Catastrophe".

The territory was divided into three parts - the Arab West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Jewish Israel. To date, the conflict remains unresolved.

<h2>Israel's war with Hamas and the looming question of a 'third Intifada'</h2>

Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya, also known by the acronym Hamas, was founded in 1987 by Palestinian cleric Sheikh Ahmed Yassin as a transnational Sunni Islamist organisation.

“Intifada” is an Arabic term which means to ‘shake off’. In December 1987, it came into popular usage as Palestinians used it to term their uprising against the presence of Israelis in Gaza and the West Bank.

Since the latest and unprecedented attacks were carried out by Hamas, some of the experts called it the beginning of the “Third Intifada”.

As Hamas launched a barrage of rockets, it appealed to the West Bank and the Arab and Islamic worlds to take part in this war against Israel.

Speaking about the intentions of Hamas behind the latest salvo against Israel, the spokesperson for the Israeli Ambassador to India said, “The intent is to instill fear in the minds of the people of Israel. They are launching terror attacks at civilians and kidnaping, raping, and murdering children as well as women and elderly.”

“Israel has to defend its civilians, and we will do what is needed to achieve that goal. I think the Israel Defense Forces' response will not encourage any Hamas terrorist to act," he added.

The firing of more than 5,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip broke the dawn of Saturday (Oct 7), with Israelis woke up to one of the bloodiest terror attacks launched by Hamas while breaking the impregnable Iron Dome defence system of Tel Aviv and infiltrating the country by breaching its security barriers. The fighters from the terrorist outfit Hamas entered the country on foot, vehicles, paragliders and boats, and Israel was caught off-guard by this sudden escalation, being seen as a “major intelligence failure”. In a recorded message, the leader of Hamas’ military wing Mohammed Deif said, “Enough is enough”, as he appealed to Palestinians to take part in “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm”, which is being called the biggest military offensive by Hamas in years. Over 600 Israelis have been murdered and many have been held hostage.” Root cause: The historical conflict between Israel and Palestine In World War I, after the Ottoman Empire fell, Palestine – which had a population divided between Arab majority and Jewish minority, went under the control of Britain. ALSO READ | Did Hamas dupe Israel into a false sense of security before ongoing devastating attack? Explained: Revisiting Israel-Palestine historical conflict amid new escalation by Hamas

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2023 ranked India in the 111th position among the 125 countries with a score of 28.7, as per a report released on Thursday (Oct 12). Reacting to the report, India's Ministry of Women and Child Development called the rankings as "flawed", adding that they failed to depict the true position of India.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka were ranked at 102nd, 81st, 69th, and 60th respectively by the GHI. In 2022, India was placed at the rank of 107 out of 121.

“The GHI continues to be a flawed measure of hunger and does not reflect India’s true position. The index is an erroneous measure of hunger and suffers from serious methodological issues. Three out of the four indicators used for the calculation of the index are related to the health of children and cannot be representative of the entire population. The fourth and most important indicator Proportion of Undernourished population (PoU) is based on an opinion poll conducted on a very small sample size of 3,000," said the ministry, in a statement.

The highest regional hunger levels were recorded by South Asia and Africa south of the Sahara as the two had a GHI score of 27.

The report, prepared by German NGO Welt Hunger Hilfe and Irish NGO Concern Worldwide, claimed that the child wasting rate of India was 18.7 per cent, which is the highest on the global level and signalled acute undernutrition.

The Indian government, while pointing towards its Poshan Tracker, stated that child-wasting figures have been consistently under 7.2 per cent, which contrasts the GHI's 18.7 per cent.

India slips in Global Hunger Index report, ranks 111th among 125 countries; govt calls it ‘flawed’

It's now a week since Israel declared war on Hamas after an unprecedented ground air and sea assault by Hamas militants on Israel over the weekend. Death toll continues to mount on both sides over 1,300 Israelis and over 1,500 Palestinians have lost their lives.

Israel-Hamas War: Israel accused of using White Phosphorus in Gaza

The Israeli Air Force on Thursday (Oct 12) said that so far they have dropped 6,000 bombs over the Hamas targets and more than 3,600 targets have been hit in the airstrikes, The Washington Post reported.&nbsp;

As per some experts in warfare, it is a staggering number and accounts for the past six days alone.

“Israel is dropping in less than a week what the US was dropping in Afghanistan in a year, in a much smaller, much more densely populated area, where mistakes are going to be magnified,” said Marc Garlasco, a former UN war crimes investigator in Libya and a military adviser at the Dutch organisation PAX for Peace, while speaking to The Washington Post.&nbsp;

Garlasco, while citing the public records from US Air Forces Central Command, said that the United States had dropped just over 7,423 bombs on Afghanistan in a span of one year. This was one of the highest number of bombs dropped in a war. As per a United Nations report, more than 7,600 bombs and missiles were reportedly dropped by NATO from planes during the entire war in Libya.&nbsp;

In 2003, when the US invaded Iraq, around 30,000 bombs were dropped, stated Garlasco, who was a targeteer for the Pentagon and had worked in planning the strikes in Iraq.

Garlasco further recalled that around 8,000 bombs were dropped by the United States on the biggest night of the invasion.&nbsp;

“I’m kind of shocked that they were able to identify so many targets in such a short period of time,” said Garlasco, while speaking about Israel.

Garlasco stated that the Israeli Air Force reportedly has some of the most precise weapons.&nbsp;

“I hope they are taking all of the necessary precautions. But I am concerned this number speaks to a level of activity that may indicate that they’re not," he said.&nbsp;

Israel-Hamas war: 1,300 Israelis killed so far since weekend terror attack

A video has been released by Hamas’s Qassam Brigades in which a female hostage and two children were shown getting released by the terror outfit.&nbsp;

The video footage which aired on Al Jazeera on Wednesday night (Oct 12) was captured from a distance and showed the unidentified woman and the children from behind.

The armed wing of Hamas, the Ezzedine al-Qassem Brigades, in a statement said that the woman was an Israeli national.

“An Israeli settler and her two children were released after they were detained during the clashes,” read the statement, as per a report published by the AFP news agency.

<h2>Israel terms the video footage as “theatrics”</h2>

The men, who appeared to be Hamas fighters, were seen walking away after leaving the captive in an open area near a fence, which most probably was the frontier between Israel and Gaza. It remained unclear when the video was shot. The video was dismissed by Israel as “theatrics”.

“After the whole world saw its ugly and true face as a barbaric organisation that executed hundreds of innocent children and women in a terrorist attack and a hideous massacre, Hamas is trying to change the truth through the theatrics of publishing a propaganda video through its media mouthpieces,” said Avichay Adraee, the Israeli military spokesman for the Arab media, in Arabic on X.

<h2>Israeli media rejects claim of Hamas</h2>

The claim of Hamas was rejected by Israeli television channels as they claimed that Hamas fighters never took the woman and two children to the Gaza Strip after they launched the deadly assault.

Amid raging Israel-Hamas war, India’s capital Delhi placed on security alert

Israeli military on Friday (Oct 13) asked more than one million Palestinian civilians living in Gaza City to relocate south in the next 24 hours, as it gathered tanks near the Gaza Strip before an expected ground invasion.

Israel has taken the vow to wipe out the Hamas militant group which carried out the deadly attacks on Tel Aviv on Saturday (Oct 7). However, if Israel carries out a ground invasion of Gaza, it can pose a serious risk to the numerous hostages who were kidnapped by the Hamas in the attack.&nbsp;

"Now is a time for war," stated Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Thursday (Oct 12) as the Gaza Strip continued to be pounded by Israeli warplanes, days after Hamas carried out its deadliest attack in the history of the Jewish state.&nbsp;

The Israeli military stated that in the coming days, they will "significantly" operate in Gaza City and the civilians will be able to return back to their homes only after another announcement is made.

<h2>UN warns of 'devastating humanitarian consequences'</h2>

The United Nations said it was impossible for such a displacement to take place "without devastating humanitarian consequences."

"The United Nations strongly appeals for any such order, if confirmed, to be rescinded avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation," said spokesman Stephane Dujarric, in a statement.

Israel's ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan described as "shameful" the response of the UN to the early warning issued by Israel to the residents of Gaza.

A Hamas official stated that the warning related to Gaza City was "fake propaganda" and appealed to citizens not to fall for it.

“The occupation [a term Hamas uses for Israel] is attempting to spread and circulate false propaganda through various means, aiming to create confusion among citizens and undermine the stability of our internal front,” said Hamas, in&nbsp;the statement.
