A secret space plane was launched by China for the third time on Thursday (Dec 15) as the United States Space Force kept waiting for its X-37B to get off the pad after facing numerous delays.

The Chinese “reusable experimental spacecraft” lifted off successfully atop a Long March 2F rocket at around 11 pm (local time) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi Desert, reported state news agency Xinhua.

As with the other two launches in 2020 and 2022, technical details or images of the spacecraft were not revealed by Xinhua and they did not state how long the flight would be.

“It’s going to operate in orbit for a period of time before returning to its intended landing site in China,” said the report.

“Reusable technology verification and space science experiments will be carried out to provide technical support for the peaceful use of space,” said the report, while using the same wording which it was used for the 2020 and 2022 missions.

Harvard astronomer Jonathan McDowell, who tracks space activities and rocket launches, said that the US Space Force was tracking the uncrewed plane in a roughly circular orbit nearly 300km in altitude.

“This is very similar to the first launch in 2020. The second launch in 2022 went to a slightly higher orbit of 345 x 593km,” he said, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

Its US counterpart Boeing X-37B, which was originally scheduled to take off at a similar time, remained grounded atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in Florida's Kennedy Space Centre, after postponements due to launch site issues and poor weather.

The mission, which is called as USSF-52, will be the seventh mission of the US plane to orbit since 2010 and the second ride with a SpaceX rocket.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in a new discovery found a record-breaking and extremely brown dwarf, which posed a challenge to scientists' understanding of how stars are born.

This newly spotted brown dwarf has been hanging out in space alone and has a mass of only 3 to 4 times that of Jupiter. This is the lowest-mass object of its kind yet found by the scientists.

The discovery of the brown dwarf has left many scientists questioning how it was formed in the first place. "It's pretty easy for current models to make giant planets in a disc around a star," said astronomer Catarina Alves de Oliveira of the European Space Agency, while speaking to Science Alert.

He added, "But in this cluster, it would be unlikely that this object formed in a disc, instead forming like a star, and three Jupiter masses is 300 times smaller than our Sun. So we have to ask, how does the star formation process operate at such very, very small masses?"

<h2>Science behind 'failed stars'</h2>

Brown dwarfs are commonly referred to as "failed stars". A star is a celestial object which gets created from a dense clump in a cloud of dust and gas in space which collapses under gravity.

The star&nbsp;continues to grow till it is massive enough for the heat and pressure in its core to turn into hydrogen fusion. The star's minimum mass is generally 80 to 85 times the mass of Jupiter.

A brown dwarf is a similar kind of object which is formed like all other stars, but it does not have enough mass which helps in creating the conditions for hydrogen fusion. However, a brown dwarf is not even a planet.

The term 'brown' in the name refers to how they are small in size compared to the white dwarf stars but bigger compared to the non-glowing 'dark' planets.

A team of astronomers, headed by Kevin Luhman of Pennsylvania State University, has been trying to discover the smallest of these objects in space.

"One basic question you'll find in every astronomy textbook is, what are the smallest stars? That's what we're trying to answer,” said Luhman.

The James Webb Space Telescope was used by scientists to conduct a survey of the centre of a young star cluster&nbsp;named IC 348, which was located in the Perseus star-forming region around 1,000 light-years away.

Israel’s longest-serving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remained a dominant force in the politics of the country for nearly 15 years. Experts believe that he has mastered the art of remaining in power while outmanoeuvring his opponents with the government's prime focus being on economic prosperity, and security, and undermining any chance of establishment of peace between Israel and Palestine.&nbsp;

However, his long and unchallenged rule over Israel started going downwards after his reinstatement in late 2022 when he started working on his highly divisive judicial overhaul for which he faced severe opposition from the citizens of the country.&nbsp;

However, his image as the protector and guardian of the nation was punctured by the surprise attack by Hamas militants on October 7, as his approval ratings crashed. Israelis in huge numbers, especially the former Hamas hostages and their families and relatives, expressed their disappointment and disgust with him openly.

<h2>Declining popularity of Netanyahu&nbsp;</h2>

Generally, in the world of politics, a national security crisis or the beginning of war sees an increase in popularity for democratic leaders. Ukraine's President Vladimir Zelensky is the most recent example who saw a surge in his popularity after the Russia-Ukraine war.&nbsp;

The same was the case with George W Bush whose approval rating increased from 51 per cent to 90 per cent after the 9/11 attacks, according to The Economist. However, this did not turn out in a similar way for Benjamin Netanyahu.

The research institutes of Israel on October 13, amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, in a poll revealed that the popularity of Netanyahu has suffered a severe setback since the devastating attack of Hamas while that of Benny Gantz, who is part of the country's “war cabinet,” has increased.

The poll, which was published by Maariv newspaper, showed that the country's opposition parties would clinch a brutal victory against the coalition of Netanyahu if elections were held now.&nbsp;

Among around 600 people surveyed, 47 per cent opted for Gantz as their next prime minister, while only 27 per cent voted for Netanyahu.

As per the survey, Gantz’s centrist National Unity party will be able to win 41 seats more than the 12 seats&nbsp;it has been currently holding. Meanwhile, Likud – which currently has 32 seats – will be able to clinch a win on just 19 seats.

As per a Dialogue Center poll, around 86 per cent of respondents felt that the October 7 attack was a result of a failed national leadership. Even the editorials in newspapers as well as political commentators did not stay behind in expressing mistrust against the government of Netanyahu.&nbsp;

As the dark clouds hovered over Netanyahu's regime, the country's longest-running newspaper The Haaretz wrote - “The disaster that befell Israel on the holiday of Simchat Torah is the clear responsibility of one person: Benjamin Netanyahu.”

Now, it will be in 2024 to see whether Netanyahu emerges successful in saving his throne or if this&nbsp;tumultuous phase brings the leader to his knees.

Here's how 2023 turned out for Israel's PM Netanyahu amid war, protests

The family members of Indian national Nikhil Gupta - who has been accused of&nbsp;plotting to kill Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun - made shocking claims of how his fundamental rights were violated multiple times in the petition.&nbsp;

As per the family members of Gupta once he&nbsp;landed at the Vaclav Havel Airport in Prague on June 30, he was taken away by "American agents" in a black SUV where he was interrogated for three hours and his mobile phone was seized.&nbsp;

52-year-old Gupta moved the Supreme Court on Friday (Dec 15) through his family member - whose identity was not revealed - and claimed how his fundamental rights were violated and his family and Gupta himself were threatened while requesting the Indian government to intervene in his extradition from the United States where he has been held on murder-for-hire charges.&nbsp;

In the petition, X said Gupta was "approached by certain individuals who identified themselves to be law enforcement" and was detained by officials outside the Prague airport without any valid reason.

The petition's most significant point was the claim that "Czech authorities had not informed the Indian Embassy as to the arrest/detention, or even whereabouts, of the petitioner", and that there has been nearly 20 days of delay in providing consular access, which should be provided if a person is a foreign citizen.&nbsp;

<h2>'Taken in black SUV, forced to eat pork and beef'&nbsp;</h2>

As per the petition, it all started &nbsp;when "... individuals who claimed to be law enforcement officers forcefully made the petitioner sit in an unidentified black SUV... took his phones... attached a device..."&nbsp;

The petition further pointed out that the officials did not arrest him at the airport's immigration counter, as per the norm, but after &nbsp;Gupta cleared entry formalities, "... when (he) had, in fact, exited Vaclav Havel Airport... meaning this round of questioning in the back of an SUV for three hours was absolutely illegal and against the principles of both international and municipal law".

The family member X further said that the "American agents" also threatened the petitioner before he was handed over to local authorities, where his blood and biometrics were collected.

"Subsequently, the petitioner was appointed a defence attorney by the Czech authorities who advised the petitioner... to give his consent to be taken to New York," said X, in the petition.

The petitioner further noted "... this advice was against the best interest of the petitioner and under the undue influence of US agencies who were trying to extradite the petitioner as soon as possible".

The petition further said that Gupta, in his first 10-11 days of prison, was only provided beef and pork, which he was not able to eat as a "devout Hindu and vegetarian". "Even after authorities were informed, they refused to give him vegetarian food.. was forced to eat food that violates... most basic human rights," it said.

Gupta also claimed that he was not allowed to reach out to his family in India. In the petition, it read that the "... petitioner was told by local authorities in Prague (this would be possible) only after US authorities approve of him making calls".

After hearing the petition, the Supreme Court told the petitioner to approach a court in the Czech Republic over the violation of his religious and human rights.&nbsp;

In the court, Justice Sanjiv Khanna said, "The person detained (Nikhil Gupta) has not given an affidavit. If there is a violation of any law... you have to go to court over there. Serve copy to central government (also)."&nbsp;

Serve copy to central government (also)." Gupta has been accused of making attempts to hire a hitman to kill Khalistani terrorist Pannun. (With inputs from agencies)

A new study has revealed that the male sea snakes underwent a variety of strange adaptations, which included changes in size and increased dimorphism.

The study, published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, while emphasising their sex lives said that the female aipysurine sea snakes turned increasingly larger compared to their male counterparts and the males started developing larger eyes than females in order to find their mate.

"Males had larger eyes, compared to head length, in all six species. It was statistically significant in three of those species. One reason for larger eyes in males may be that they have shifted to vision to find mates, because (unlike land snakes), they can't follow a scent trail laid onto the ground by a female as she moves along," said a study author Richard Shine, a professor of biology at Australia's Macquarie University, while speaking to Newsweek.

The researchers added that although the males evolved to become smaller in comparison to the females, their eyes started becoming much larger in comparison to their entire bodies. &nbsp;

<h2>Sea snakes undergo modification in&nbsp;watery environment</h2>

As per the theory, these changes took place to help the male snakes spot the females as they tried to adjust to the watery environment. The watery environment was making it difficult for them to follow a scent trail.

"Sexual selection on mate-finding ability offers a plausible selective advantage for larger relative eye size in males," wrote the authors, in the paper.

"Unlike their terrestrial counterparts, male sea snakes cannot locate reproductive females by following substrate-deposited pheromonal trails; and instead, may rely upon visual cues to find mates until the other snake is close enough for chemosensory sampling. The resulting difficulty in finding mates may have imposed strong selection on visual acuity in male sea snakes," they added.&nbsp;

As per alternative theories, the smaller males had eyes which were too small to properly see and this led to evolvement of disproportionally larger eyes. It was also suggested that the eye size may have changed due to differing foraging habits of the males and females.

It was also suggested in the paper that the females had evolved larger to have more babies because of the loss of male-male fighting for females.&nbsp;

On December 8, Taiwan Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng, while interacting with reporters, shared information about China's suspected weather balloon crossing the sensitive median line of the Strait at a time when elections were just a month away and tensions were only escalating.&nbsp;

The media reports speculated that the suspected weather balloon was another one of those spy balloons used by China for surveillance. In a very short time frame, the comment by the minister took the global political stage back to the dramatic spat between the United States and China when a high-altitude Chinese balloon was seen flowing in American airspace from January 28 to February 4, only to be finally shot down by the US Air Force over its territorial waters off the coast of South Carolina.

<h2>Thaw in relations, diplomacy at bay</h2>

The spotting of the Chinese balloon in American airspace led to a political uproar between the two countries and US diplomat Antony Blinken's trip to Beijing from February 5-6 was suddenly called off.

A military operation was carried out which involved multiple fighters and refuelling aircraft and one F-22 fighter jet in shooting down the balloon. The government of the US never revealed which sites were surveyed by the Chinese balloon, but it was said to have flown over Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, which has been in charge of nuclear forces.

Through the trial and explosion of the balloon, China kept reiterating that it was a civilian craft which was used for meteorological and other purposes, and had flown into US airspace "completely accidentally".

Blinken, after cancelling his China visit, met with the Chinese embassy's senior officials along with &nbsp;Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman to convey "a strong set of messages". A team was already directed by Biden to protect sensitive information of sites from Chinese surveillance till the mission was over.

<h2>A balloon failure or just a hullabaloo?</h2>

It was only months later in June that the Pentagon revealed after analysing the debris of the balloon that it did not collect any information.

Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Pat Ryder had said that the US was "aware that [the balloon] had intelligence collection capabilities. But it has been our assessment now that it did not collect while it was transiting the United States or overflying the United States".

US intelligence further hinted that China has most likely suspended its surveillance balloon programme after the major diplomatic escalation. However, the incident left many questions unanswered like why did China choose balloons over satellite and to what avail?

"This wasn't the first time an Asian balloon had overflown from China. This incident was one of the most absurd and obselete ones and it projected a clumsy way of gathering intel. This is because there is nothing a balloon can do that a satellite can't do much better, more accurately and with greater precision. This appeared far from challenging US hegemony and it looked something like a joke," said Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, Senior Research Fellow at the New Delhi-based Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies. &nbsp;

<h2>Hiccups in US-China panda diplomacy</h2>

The early 1970s, which marked the 'ping-pong' diplomacy between the United States and China, saw the exchange of table tennis players between the countries as an effort to establish ties between the two countries.

It was the same diplomacy which paved the way for US President Richard Nixon's historic ice-breaking visit to Beijing in 1972, where for the first time a pair of pandas were gifted by Beijing to the Smithsonian National Zoo – marking the beginning of panda diplomacy.

Since then, pandas have become some kind of unofficial barometer of China and US relations. However, 2023 saw the collapse of the panda diplomacy between the two countries as the contract for lending these fur animals expired and was not renewed.

In November, the last three remaining pandas at the Smithsonian National Zoo were sent back to China after remaining in the US for more than 50 years. The departure of pandas from the United States appeared as a sign of the significant shift in their complicated relationship where tension seemed to prevail over the cuteness of the adorable bears.

<h2>A step ahead or a step behind – where is China headed?</h2>

Amid such strained ties, Xi Jinping made a political visit to the United States and held the most-awaited talks with Biden in San Francisco, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference.

The meeting saw some significant decisions being taken by the two countries like the resumption of military-to-military communication and co-operation on drug crackdown while heated issues like Taiwan remained part of the discussion.&nbsp;

However, interestingly, after the meeting with Biden Xi hinted on the return of pandas – calling them “envoys of friendship between the Chinese and American peoples".

“I…learned that the San Diego Zoo and the Californians very much look forward to welcoming pandas back. We are ready to continue our cooperation with the United States on panda conservation, and do our best to meet the wishes of the Californians so as to deepen the friendly ties between our two peoples," said Xi.&nbsp;

Speaking about the chances of pandas being recalled, Suyash Desai, a Taiwan-based research scholar on China's military and foreign policy, said, "Panda Diplomacy is used by China to thaw rising tensions between the two countries. It is an old diplomatic practice since the Tang Dynasty (618–907). Given the current geopolitical tensions between the two countries, it was likely that Pandas would be recalled and it is largely a symbolic measure by China. Also in the current scenario, I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the Pandas would be recalled next year when the contract expires."

It will be interesting to see if Pandas will play a significant role in strengthening ties between the two countries in 2024 or whether it will hit a new low.

Spy balloon, Panda diplomacy: US-China ties in 2023 entered a phase of 21st century cold war

A woman had a near-death experience in the United States after she lost consciousness and was declared clinically dead for 24 minutes. The doctors declared author Lauren Canaday as "clinically dead" after her heart suddenly stopped beating.

After remaining unconscious for nearly half an hour, the woman was resuscitated. As she woke up, the woman said she had no memory of the past week. During an 'Ask Me Anything' session held on Reddit, the woman revealed her experience. The woman said that she was taken to the hospital where she remained in a coma for two days.

Canaday further thanked her husband who started her CPR early and said that he would also be her "hero". "I went into sudden cardiac arrest at home this past February - my husband called 911 and started CPR. It took 24 minutes for EMTs to resuscitate me. After 9 days in the ICU, I was declared 'cognitively intact' and have no visible brain damage on MRIs," said Canaday, in the Reddit post.

The internet users were willing to know about her experience and shared several questions about what happened immediately after he collapses and what kind of tests she underwent.

Canaday said that her electroencephalogram's results came normal after she woke up even though she experienced an epileptic seizure for more than 30 minutes after getting resuscitated. An electroencephalogram is a test which measures electrical activity in the human brain.

"My husband did CPR for 4 minutes and the operator told him what to do, he'd never done it and hadn't been certified in a long time. Luckily we are close to a fire station and EMTs arrived in 4 minutes to take over and use the paddles!" she said.

The author, while responding to a user, said that she was informed by the paramedics that her cardiac arrest occurred because of complications from COVID-19, for which she tested positive when she was admitted to the ICU.

As per the New York Post, the case of Canaday is fascinating since many people do not have a long life after their resurrection. Her experience's most fascinating part was the feeling of “extreme peace", which she added stayed with her for a "few weeks upon waking". Also, she confirmed that she did not see flashes of her life - a symptom which has been described by many.
