As the world leaders gathered at the COP28 summit to discuss the climate challenges and goals, the most ambitious climate target of limiting global heating to 1.5C above preindustrial levels appeared under threat.

The inclusion of achieving a global heat limit of 1.5C (2.7F) was seen as the Paris Climate Agreement's great triumph in 2015. Till then, the ambition of limiting global heating had been limited to 2C (3.6F), which has left the small island states and other countries that are on the frontline of climate disruption frustrated.

Eight years after the Paris Summit, the severity of the climate crisis has been the only real change for climate experts. Oil companies continue to expand production and they continue to rake in profits and have increased emissions to record levels.

The global temperatures, which have been boosted by an El Nino, are higher than what they have been at any time and have devastating impacts on ecosystem destruction, food supplies and human mortality.

In the first 10 months of this year, global heating had already reached 1.4C above preindustrial levels and there is the possibility of it reaching 1.5C in the near future. Many climatologists have been shocked by the speed at which 1.5C is approaching. As per many influential scientists, the most ambitious Paris target will be breached in the coming years.

Here's how the climate will be affected if the global heating target reaches 1.5C.

Severe storms, flooding and drought

Flooding, storms and drought are likely to become more severe and frequent with each increasing fraction of a degree of warming.

As per experts, those who will be worst affected are the climate-vulnerable people residing in countries with weaker healthcare systems and poor economies.

As per Catherine Nakalembe, who is the head of the Africa programme of Nasa Harvest, it has been projected that 70 million more people will suffer acute food insecurity in Africa at 2C than 1.5C, The Guardian reported

She added that at lower temperatures, there is a 30 per cent less chance of severe drought than at 2C in southern Africa, while yields of maize and sorghum can be 40 per cent to 50 per cent lower at 2C than 1.5C in west Africa.

Amazon rainforest may reach tipping point

The planet's non-human inhabitants, with half a degree less breathing space, will suffer considerable losses which will increase the stress on water quality, pollination and the planetary life-support system's other biological components.

At 2C, it has been projected that 18 per cent of insect species, 16 per cent of plants and 8 per cent of vertebrates will lose half of their habitats, which is at least two times the proportions at 1.5C.

As per experts, the Amazon as well as other tropical rainforests are likely to diminish rapidly when a dry season occurs which as per the projection is likely to be a month longer at 2C compared to 1.5C, and there is likely to be a three-fold increase in extreme heat.

This situation increases the prospect of the rainforest reaching a tipping point, after which it is likely to dry up and become a savannah which has few global benefits like water transport, carbon sequestration and cooling.

Turbulence in marine ecosystem

The health of the oceans also gets affected by a warming world. Oxygen depletion and acidification places pressure on fisheries, on which billions of people are dependent.

Watch: Green parties' impact on climate policy

The beautiful coral reef systems, which have been acutely sensitive to the fluctuations in the temperature and the pH of the water, have been going through bleaching events and they are likely to “flicker out” with each fraction of increase in degree.

As per experts, at 1.5C it is already almost impossible to save coral reefs in the Caribbean and parts of the western Indian Ocean. With this, only 10 per cent to 30 per cent have a chance of remaining in good health. The survival rate further declines between 1 per cent and 10 per cent at 2C.

Rise in sea level and melting ice caps

The warming climate in the Arctic Circle, parts of which have already crossed 4C above preindustrial levels, has led to an increase in sea level, melting of permafrost, disruption of the jet stream and release of methane emissions. All these climatic occurrences have become a threat to human survival.

The warming temperature also has been increasing the risk of the collapse of a major Antarctic glacier. “Our survival is at stake,” said Fatumanava-o-Upolu III Dr Pa’olelei Luteru, chair of the Alliance of Small Island States, while speaking to The Guardian.

“We know we must stay within the 1.5C warming limit if we are to avoid the worst impacts of climate change – impacts our islands are already suffering from, including loss of land from sea level rise, catastrophic loss of lives and homes from more frequent and severe storms, lack of drinkable water, agricultural depletion and more,” he added.

NASA on Wednesday (Dec 13) announced that its Perseverance rover has completed the job that it was assigned to do when it landed on the planet Mars in February 2021. The basic task given to the robot was to conduct the survey of Jezero Crater, an ancient crater lake, and collect rocks which will help in their quest to find evidence for past life.

In a major conference held in San Francisco, the mission team said that the rover had accomplished this primary objective as it completed its 1000 Martian days.

"Marking its 1,000th Martian day on the Red Planet, NASA’s Perseverance rover recently completed its exploration of the ancient river delta that holds evidence of a lake that filled Jezero Crater billions of years ago. The six-wheeled scientist has to date collected a total of 23 samples, revealing the geologic history of this region of Mars in the process," stated NASA, in its media release.

"It's a pretty incredible achievement and we've done an amazing amount of science," NASA's director of planetary science Dr Lori Glaze said. However, the completion of the task did not mean that the Perseverance would park up and "switch off the engine".

However, the scientists are left with many challenges ahead, which include how the rock samples of the vehicle will be brought back to Earth so that they can be studied in the lab.

“We picked Jezero Crater as a landing site because orbital imagery showed a delta – clear evidence that a large lake once filled the crater. A lake is a potentially habitable environment, and delta rocks are a great environment for entombing signs of ancient life as fossils in the geologic record,” Perseverance’s project scientist Ken Farley of Caltech said. “After thorough exploration, we’ve pieced together the crater’s geologic history, charting its lake and river phase from beginning to end," he added.

Perseverance completes 1,000 days on Mars, decodes mystery of ancient crater lake

The scientists made a startling observation when they observed that the atmosphere of Mars dramatically ballooned outwards because of a void created due to a powerful gust of solar wind.

A new study has been published on the event which states how on 26 December 2022, a sharp drop in the solar particles was recorded by the MAVEN spacecraft present in orbit around Mars.

The spacecraft simultaneously recorded a bizarre and startling change in the atmosphere of Mars. The magnetosphere and ionosphere of Mars expanded thousands of kilometres, which tripled its size.

The last time scientists observed this phenomenon was in 1999 when the solar wind had suddenly dropped which led to outward swelling in the magnetosphere of Earth and increased its volume 100-fold.

These observations provided the scientists with a rare glimpse of how Mars behaves when there is a sudden change in the conditions of the Solar System and also gave insight into how planets interact in the solar system with their environments around different stars.

"When we first saw the data, and how dramatic the drop in the solar wind was, it was almost unbelievable," said astronomer Jasper Halekas, who is the lead author of a new study and is a professor at the University of Iowa.

"We formed a working group to study the event, and we have found this time period to be rich with incredible findings,” he added while speaking to Science Alert.

Scientists trying to decode how Mars will orbit in a less 'windy' star

Generally, the solar wind remains constant in the Solar System and all the planets remain embedded in it. These solar winds are streams of particles which blow out from the Sun across different directions all the time and create ambient pressure throughout the Solar System, and further subside at a boundary called as heliopause.

However, a different kind of wind was gusted by Mars on 26 December 2022. This wind consisted of two different solar winds, a slower one which was swept up and later engulfed by a faster wind which was coming in from behind before it continued outwards as one superwind.

A higher density of particles which was present in this double solar wind was recorded by MAVEN. Also read: NASA's Perseverance rover decodes Martian lake's ancient history after spending 1000 Martian days "When we first saw the data, and how dramatic the drop in the solar wind was, it was almost unbelievable," said astronomer Jasper Halekas, who is the lead author of a new study and is a professor at the University of Iowa. "We formed a working group to study the event, and we have found this time period to be rich with incredible findings,” he added while speaking to Science Alert. Scientists trying to decode how Mars will orbit in a less 'windy' star Generally, the solar wind remains constant in the Solar System and all the planets remain embedded in it. Watch: Scientists surprised by source of largest quake detected on Mars A higher density of particles which was present in this double solar wind was recorded by MAVEN. After a significant drop in particle density was detected in the wind which passed by the orbiting observatory – a rare void of low density and extremely weak solar wind was detected, and a drop was also seen in solar wind pressure. "We are really getting to see how Mars responds when the solar wind is effectively removed. It makes for a great outlier study on what Mars would be like if it were orbiting a less 'windy' star,” Halekas said.
