The air quality of India's national capital New Delhi, after falling in the 'poor' category, again turned 'very poor' on Thursday (Dec 7).

The air quality index (AQI) in the capital city was 289 at 10 am (local time) and reached 301 – which falls under the 'very poor' category by 11 am (local time) and further deteriorated to 315 by 3 pm (local time).

On Thursday, the national capital's average AQI was 320, in comparison to 287 a day earlier. The minimum temperature, meanwhile, was 9.2 degrees Celsius which was the same as that of Wednesday's and also was the lowest temperature of the season.

Temperature to dip

According to the weather department, the temperature in New Delhi will start falling from Friday (Dec 8). The capital city's maximum temperature was 25.8 degrees Celsius, which was a notch above the normal temperature of the season, against 26.4 degrees on Wednesday. The day also remained foggy on Thursday in Delhi.

The pollution level increased as foggy conditions and low wind speed obstructed ventilation. As per the Air Quality Early Warning System, the AQI is likely to remain 'very poor' on Friday (Dec 8), although slight improvement is likely to take place on Saturday (Dec 9).

According to the forecast, the air quality may remain 'poor' to 'very poor' next week. As per the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology's Decision Support System, 27 per cent of PM2.5 has been attributed to other sources, 15 per cent to transport and 5 per cent to industries which are located in and around Delhi.

On Thursday, both PM2.5 and PM10 levels increased in the air. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, PM2.5 hovered nearly 135.8 micrograms per cubic metre at 6 pm (local time) in comparison to 110.8 a day earlier.

As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the national capital is likely to receive no rain till December 11. Last week, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that Grap-3 has been lifted in the capital city but the government has been making efforts to ensure that Grap-1 and 2 are strictly implemented.

In a new study, it has been found that the carbon dioxide level currently in the atmosphere is the same as it was 14 million years ago, which reflects upon the deteriorating climatic conditions and the grim future ahead.

The paper, which was published in the Science journal, covers the time period of 66 million years and analyses geochemical and biological signatures from the past era for reconstructing the historic CO2 record with detailed precision.

"It really brings it home to us that what we are doing is very, very unusual in Earth's history," said lead author Baerbel Hoenisch of the Columbia Climate School's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, while speaking to news agency AFP.

Along with other things, the new analysis discovered that the last time there was the presence of 420 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide in the air was between 14-16 million years ago when ice was not present in Greenland and the ancestors of humans had started transitioning from forests to grasslands.

Will world leaders at COP28 act now?

This is even further back than the 3 to 5 million years which were studied in the prior analyses.

Till the late 1700s, the atmospheric carbon dioxide was around 280 ppm, which meant humans had already led to increase of the greenhouse gas by about 50 per cent which traps heat in the atmosphere and the planet has been warmed by 1.2 degrees Celsius in comparison to before industrialisation.

"What's important is that Homo, our species, has only evolved 3 million years ago. And so our civilisation is tuned to sea level as it is today, to having warm tropics and cool poles and temperate regions that have a lot of rainfall,” said Hoenisch.

Global CO2 emissions can reach between 600-800 ppm by 2100

It has been estimated that if global CO2 emissions continue rising, it can reach between 600 - 800 ppm by the year 2100.

Such kinds of levels were seen during the Eocene, 30-40 million years ago, before ice had covered Antarctica and the world's flora and fauna appeared vastly different.

Also read: Explained | Global CO2 emissions due to fossil fuels hit new record. Global CO2 emissions can reach between 600-800 ppm by 2100 It has been estimated that if global CO2 emissions continue rising, it can reach between 600 - 800 ppm by the year 2100. Such kinds of levels were seen during the Eocene, 30-40 million years ago, before ice had covered Antarctica and the world's flora and fauna appeared vastly different.
In a major discovery, twin temples which were built on top of one another were unearthed by archaeologists in Iraq. The newer temple, which was reportedly built in the Hellenistic era and dates back to the fourth century BC, was said to be linked to Alexander the Great.

Inside the temple, the archaeologists found a fired brick which had an Aramaic and Greek inscription, that referred to "the giver of two brothers", which was seen as a possible reference made to the Macedonian king, who had ruled for 13 years from 336 BC to 323 BC and conquered much of the known world.

The archaeologists, who are associated with the British Museum in London, found the older temple during excavations being carried out in Girsu, which is a Sumerian city and is also called Tello in southeastern Iraq.

The excavations were being carried out as part of the museum's ongoing venture called The Girsu Project which focuses on gathering more information about the storied history of the city.

The remnants of the older Sumerian temple were discovered buried "on the exact same spot" as the newer temple which was dedicated to the "Greek god Hercules and his Sumerian equivalent, the hero-god Ningirsu [also known as Ninurta]," said Sebastien Rey, an archaeologist and curator of Ancient Mesopotamia at the British Museum, who headed the excavation, while responding to Live Science.

The researchers said that the temple was built on the same site where one stood 1,500 years earlier and it was no coincidence. They added that the site must have some significance for the people of Mesopotamia.

"It shows that the inhabitants of Babylonia in the [fourth] century BC had a vast knowledge of their history. The legacy of the Sumerians was still very vibrant,” said Rey.

Inscription of Zeus on the coin

The archaeologists, while exploring the dual temple site, discovered a silver drachm (an ancient Greek coin) which was buried underneath an altar or shrine, along with a brick with the two brothers' inscription.

"The inscription is very interesting because it mentions an enigmatic Babylonian name written in Greek and Aramaic," said Rey. "The name 'Adadnadinakhe,' which means 'Adad, the giver of brothers,' was clearly chosen as a ceremonial title on account of its archaizing tone and symbolic connotations. All the evidence points to the fact that the name was extraordinarily rare,” he added.

The inscription found appeared to be that of Zeus, the Greek sky god, who has been a symbol of a lightning bolt and an eagle. The two symbols were found on the coin, which is likely to have been struck in Babylon "under Alexander the Great's authority," said Rey.

"It shows Hercules in a youthful, clean-shaven portrait that strongly recalls conventional representations of Alexander on one side, with Zeus on the other,” he added.
Zeus also "famously acknowledged Alexander as his son through the agency of the Ammon oracle,” he added. "He became quite literally the 'giver of brothers' because he affirmed a fraternal bond between Alexander and Heracles,” said Rey.

6 Natural Ways To Decrease Your Cholesterol

Adding more than 10 grams of fibre to the diet helps in decreasing LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels.

A plant-based diet, which is filled with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and nuts helps in lowering cholesterol.

Doing moderate-intensity to high-intensity exercises daily helps in lowering high LDL levels.

The intake of Omega-3 greatly impacts the triglycerides. Triglycerides are a kind of fat present in the blood which increases the risk of heart attack and leads to high LDL levels.

Obesity leads to high levels of cholesterol and hence fat percentage should be maintained.

It is important to keep stress levels under control as it can lead to the development of cholesterol-related health issues.

In a new study, it is revealed that baboons considered to be sacred by ancient Egyptians were kept in captivity by them.

It was already known by historians and archaeologists that the Egyptians revered and mummified several kinds of animals, which included baboons. However, it was not clear whether they also treated the baboons in a similar way.

In the study, which was published in the journal PLOS ONE and headed by Wim Van Neer of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Belgium, the details of 36 mummified baboon bodies which were found in Gabbanat el-Qurud, in the Valley of the Monkeys on the west bank of Luxor in Egypt were mentioned.

After the bodies were analysed, it was found that they were not kept in good condition.

"Life was not easy for Egypt's sacred baboons," read the study. "Scientific study shows they suffered from malnutrition and lack of sunlight," it added.

The skeletal remains discovered were of different ages and were estimated to date back to between 800 to 500 BC.
