6 Magical Benefits Of Eating Tomato On Skin

1. Gets Rid Of Free Radicals, Prevents Skin Ageing

Tomatoes contain lycopene, which gives the vegetable its distinctive bright red colour, is a natural and potent antioxidant that gets rid of free radicals in the body. It also prevents skin ageing by stabilising the DNA structure in the nucleus of skin cells.

Tomatoes help in maintaining the pH balance of the skin and since it is naturally acidic, it combats the excessive oil produced by the sebaceous glands.

Tomatoes contain anti-inflammatory compounds like Vitamin C, Lycopene, Vitamin E and Beta carotene. It soothes any irritation on the skin and is also helpful in treating sunburns.

Tomatoes have 13–15 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. The vitamin C in tomatoes helps in healing wounds by supporting the growth of new skin cells.

Tomatoes are good for exfoliation in which the dead skin cells are removed. It contains enzymes which help in the exfoliation of the skin.

Tomatoes help in reducing acne and pimples on the skin because their juice is acidic and possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties.

6 Magical Benefits Of Eating Tomato On Skin

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (Dec 8) announced that he will be again running for president in the 2024 presidential election – a move which is most likely to keep him in power till at least 2030.

When will elections take place?

The election will be conducted in a span of three days starting from March 15-17 and the winning candidate will become the next president in the month of May.

The Russian parliament's upper house voted for the date of elections on Thursday (Dec 7), which also marked the start of the election campaign.

This time, voting will also be conducted in what Russia refers to as its new territories – which are the parts of Ukraine where the Russian forces have gained their control. Ukraine has said it will not stop till it has removed every Russian soldier from the annexed territories.

How many voters will vote in the elections?

In Russia, nearly 110 million people have the right to cast their vote, although usually around 70-80 million people turn up for voting. In 2018, the turnout was 67.5 per cent.

How long is Putin likely to rule if elected again?

On the last day of 1999, Putin was handed over the presidency of Russia by Boris Yeltsin and till now he has already become the longest-serving Russian president since Josef Stalin, breaking the record of even Leonid Brezhnev, who was the president from 1964 to 1982.

The 1993 Russian constitution, which is loosely based on the 1958 constitution of France, was perceived by some in the West as a step which would lead post-Soviet Russia towards democracy. The constitution originally had stated that a president can only serve for two successive terms which will be four years each.

In the amendments made in 2008, the presidential term was extended to six years and amendments introduced in 2020 gave Putin the power to run for the post of president for more than two six-year terms after 2024. This means, that if he is elected this time he will remain president till 2030 and if he manages to clinch victory post that, then Putin will remain president of Russia till 2036.

How fair are elections and what are Putin's chances of winning?

With the Russian State Duma considered a “rubber stamp” body which lacks influence and just plays the role of a vote-button-pushing automaton for the government, several questions arise over Putin's chances of winning the elections and how fairly they would be held.

Putin is considered as a war criminal by the West but that fails to reflect in the Russian opinion polls where he is shown to have approval ratings of 80 per cent, which is higher than his approval ratings before Russia invaded Ukraine.

As per the Kremlin, Putin has been enjoying overwhelming support from the people of Russia and the country is not interested in being lectured about democracy by the West and that there are no politicians in the West who have similar approval ratings as that of Putin.

Where is Putin's opposition and who else will or can run elections?

It is most likely that Putin will face very little or no real competition in the elections. In the voting held in 2018, the man who came second after Putin was Communist tycoon Pavel Grudinin. Grudinin was able to garner less than 9 million votes, or just 11.8 per cent, as per the official results.

The most well-known opposition politician in Russia is Alexei Navalny who was earlier poisoned and is now in prison so he cannot run for the presidential elections.

Navalny has claimed that Russia is currently being run by thieves and criminals and warned that the leaders of Russia will be ultimately crushed one day for creating a bloodbath in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, pro-war Russian nationalist Igor Girkin, who has been kept in custody and awaiting trial for inciting extremism, in November had expressed his willingness to run for presidential elections even though he said that the polls will be a "sham" as the winner is already decided. When the elections will take place, he will be behind bars.

The man, who turned out to be the biggest direct threat to Putin's unchallenged rule, was the most powerful mercenary in Russia, Yevgeny Prigozhin. Prigozhin's short-lived mutiny in June sent thunders into the Kremlin and shook Putin's throne, leaving the world wondering if this was the end of his rule.

However, after two months Prigozhin was killed in a suspicious plane crash and the remnants of his Wagner force went under the control of Russia's allies.

The missile testing has been paused by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), India's premier agency for military R&D, at Wheeler Island off Odisha coast since it is Olive Ridley sea turtles' mass nesting season from January to March next year, according to a report published in The Times of India.

The testing was paused to ensure that the endangered species were able to survive for a long duration. Mechanised boats, missile testing and movement of people badly affect the sea turtles' mass nesting and breeding off the island. This year, nearly five lakh Olive Ridleys have nested on the island.

The coast will be patrolled by the army and Coast Guard to keep fishing boats and trawlers from going close to the strips of sand near estuaries and bays, where the eggs have been laid by the turtles.

Missile's bright light, loud sounds affect turtles

A committee, led by Odisha chief secretary P K Jena, on Friday, announced the decision to pause missile testing at Wheeler Island off Odisha coast,

People hunt the small turtles to eat them and use their oil and their unhatched eggs and shells are used as fertilisers.

"The turtle nesting site is close to Wheeler Island. Since missile testing involves flashes of strong light and thunderous sound, the turtles get distracted," said Susanta Nanda, principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife), while speaking to The Times Of India.

Nearly 6.6 lakh (0.6 million) sea turtles have nested at the Rushikulya rookery located in Ganjam district. Fishing has already been banned by the Odisha government across the coastal side from November 1 till May 31.

The committee emphasised the need to issue advisories to institutions, organisations, and industrial houses which are located along the coast to follow the outdoor lighting regulations, said the chief secretary.

The director of the Integrated Testing Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Balasore has been appealed by the wildlife division to provide them space outside Wheeler Island's periphery for setting up seasonal forest camps.

The marine police will use this as a base and undertake joint sea patrolling along with the forest department, while a trawler will be provided to the mangrove forest division by the Paradip Port Authority for vigilance duties.

"The DRDO will also nominate a nodal officer for better co-ordination with the forest department for the safety of the Olive Ridleys," said an official.

India: DRDO pauses missile testing off Odisha coast to save lives of Olive Ridley sea turtles

The scientists, in their latest discovery, found that when there is a collision between pieces of space debris, electric signals are released by them which help in tracking small debris that is littering the orbit of our planet and can prove beneficial in saving both spacecraft and satellites.

The researchers at the University of Michigan have now proposed a new approach which can help spacecraft operators and satellites detect small pieces of debris which are orbiting Earth.

“Right now, we detect space debris by looking for objects that reflect light or radar signals. The smaller the objects get, the harder it becomes to get sunlight or radar signals strong enough to detect them from the ground,” explained Nilton Renno, who is professor of climate and space sciences and engineering and aerospace engineering and the university team's principal investigator.

Till now, they have been able to track objects which are much larger than a cricket ball and this applies to less than one per cent of the nearly 170 million pieces of trash leftover from old satellites, spacewalk and rocket launches.

The researchers said that the new method can be used for detecting debris which is smaller than one millimetre in diameter.

How dangerous is trash in space?

The trash in space is dangerous in many ways. A piece of space debris, which is the size of a plum, will have a speed of around 35,000 kilometres per hour at typical orbit and hence, its momentum will be equal to a highway car crash.

In such scenarios, a small piece of debris will carry the capacity to destroy satellites. Even very small and fine pieces can cause damage to the spacecraft.

Generally, pieces of debris in space collide with each other which also becomes an issue because after collision they fragment into smaller and smaller pieces.

Such collisions can turn disastrous and they can also give the scientists an opportunity to track space junk. When the collision of debris takes place and it gets fragmented into smaller pieces, some of it gets vapourised into a charged gas due to the heat from the impact.

The collision creates bursts of lightning-like energy. As per the most recent simulations by the team, when the collision of two pieces of aluminium takes place at typical orbital speeds, they release an electrical burst, which is detected on Earth using a high-quality radio receiver.

This eventually helps the scientists track the space junk and send alerts to keep the spacecraft in space safe and undamaged.

The cabinet of the Indian state of Assam gave a go-ahead to the socio-economic survey of the indigenous Muslim population in the state.

The cabinet took the decision a year and a half after five communities were recognised by the government of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as "indigenous Assamese Muslims".

The "indigenous" Muslims' socio-economic assessment will be carried out by the Directorate of Char Areas Development, which has been renamed as Directorate of Minority Affairs and Char Areas, stated a cabinet note.

As per the 2011 Census, more than 34 per cent of the state's population comprised of Muslims, which was the third highest among all Union Territories and states after J&K and Lakshadweep. Among the state's total population of 31 million, more than 10 million are Muslims.

However, only around 4 million are Assamese-speaking native Muslims and the rest are Bengali-speaking immigrants, who have Bangladeshi origin.

The government led by Himanta had announced plans for carrying out indigenous Muslim communities' socio-economic assessment in the month of October.

"These findings will guide the government to take suitable measures aimed at the comprehensive socio-political and educational upliftment (sic) of the state's indigenous minorities," stated CM Himanta in a post on X.

Classification – a long-standing demand of Muslim communities

The Goria, Moria, Jolah (which include those living in tea gardens), and Desi and Syed (which are only Assamese-speaking) communities were categorised as native Assamese Muslims by the state government in July last year. The Assamese Muslims do not have any history of migrating from erstwhile East Pakistan which is now Bangladesh.

The government took the decision of identifying five sub-groups as indigenous on the basis of recommendations of seven sub-committees which were earlier formed by the state government.

The latest trend which has left researchers baffled and has forced people to worry about the growing dangers of artificial intelligence technology in the future is its use by websites and applications for undressing women in photos.

Such applications and websites have been gaining popularity, as per the report published by Bloomberg. According to the information gathered by social network analysis company Graphika, undressing websites were visited by 24 million people in September.

As per Graphika, popular social networks are being used by many of these undressing or “nudify” services for marketing. The researchers said that from the start of the year, the number of links which advertised the undressing apps saw an increase of more than 2,400 per cent on social media, which included Reddit and X.

Such applications have become a part of a worrying trend of non-consensual pornography which is being developed and distributed due to the advancement in artificial intelligence. This can be called as one kind of fabricated media, also known as deepfake pornography.

Such applications are bound to face ethical and legal hurdles as the images are generally picked from social media and distributed without any control, consent or knowledge of the subject.

Graphika said that such applications are becoming popular at a time when many open-source diffusion models are being released and images of superior quality are being created by artificial intelligence.

Tech’s dark world: Apps, websites misuse AI for undressing women in photos, gain popularity

The United States widened a trade blacklist Friday taking aim at forced labour concerns involving Uyghurs and other minorities in China.

Three Chinese companies -- COFCO Sugar Holding, Sichuan Jingweida Technology Group and Anhui Xinya New Materials -- were the latest additions to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act entity list, the government said.

From December 11, goods produced by the three firms will be barred from entering the United States, bringing the number of designated companies to 30.

This comes "as a result of the companies' participation in business practices that target members of persecuted groups, including Uyghur minorities in the PRC," said the Department of Homeland Security, referring to the People's Republic of China.

COFCO Sugar Holding refines and produces sugar, Jingweida Technology makes devices like network transformers and radio frequency filters, while Xinya New Materials manufactures textile materials.

The US government and lawmakers in a number of other Western countries have labelled China's treatment of the Uyghur minority in the northwestern Xinjiang region as "genocide," although Beijing vehemently denies this.

According to rights groups, at least one million people, mostly members of Muslim minorities, have been incarcerated in the region and face widespread abuses, including forced sterilization of women and coerced labour.

The Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act bans the import of all goods from the Xinjiang region unless companies offer verifiable proof that production did not involve forced labour.

At least three elderly people lost their lives in a massive blaze that broke out in a hospital overnight in the Italian town of Tivoli, which is near Rome, as reported by Italian media on Saturday.

A fourth dead body was discovered in the San Giovanni Evangelista hospital's mortuary, which was reported by many media organisations as the fourth casualty, however, Italy's Ansa news agency said that the victim was said to have died before 11 pm (2200 GMT) on Friday night, which was some time before the hospital caught fire.

The turntable ladders were used by the fire brigade for evacuating nearly 200 people from the hospital, which included many children and a pregnant woman.

Patients evacuated, transferred to hospitals

In a statement, the Tivoli mayor’s office said that the patients in the hospital's intensive care were immediately transferred to other hospitals via ambulance. While the less-critical patients were shifted to the nearby municipal gymnasium and their transfer to other facilities was pending.

As per the media reports, those people who were evacuated from the hospital were taken to different parts of Rome so as to be provided treatment.

Italy: At least three killed, several evacuated after fire breaks out in hospital

In a shocking claim, Indian senior advocate Kapil Sibal said that Assam originally belonged to Myanmar and not India.

The statement was made by the lawyer during the court proceedings which aimed at addressing multiple petitions which challenged the validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act of 1955.

This section, which is important for the implementation of the Assam Accord, permits specific foreign migrants who got entry between January 1, 1966, and March 25, 1971, to apply for citizenship of India.

After the proceedings, the Union Government was directed by the Supreme Court to provide detailed data on the illegal migrants who entered into Assam and the northeastern states after March 25, 1971.

The directive was part of the comprehensive review process related to contentious Section 6A, which is a provision that led to heated debates among different groups within Assam.

During the court proceeding, senior advocate Kapil Sibal – who was representing the respondents – emphasised how complex it is to trace population movements in Assam while highlighting how it was earlier part of Myanmar and later came under British governance.

"Migration of people and populations is embedded in history and cannot be mapped. If you look at the history of Assam, you'll realise that it is impossible to figure out who came when," Sibal said, during the hearing.

"Assam was originally a part of Myanmar. It was way back in 1824 after the British conquered part of the territory that a treaty was entered into by which Assam was handed over to the British. You can imagine the kind of movement of people that might have taken place in the context of the then British Empire," he added.

CM Himanta refutes Sibal's claims

The argument of Kapil Sibal was refuted by the Assam government which stated that it was not historically true that Assam was part of Myanmar.

Assam government spokesperson Pijush Hazarika said that at no point in history, Assam was part of Myanmar.

"From the time of Mahabharat and before, we have firmly been an integral part of Bharatvarsh," said the government spokesperson, as Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also called the comment by Sibal incorrect.

"Those who do not know should not speak. Never was Assam a part of Myanmar. People from Myanmar came and clashed with the Assam people. For a brief period -- for a month-- Assam became like an occupation. This is the extent of Assam and Myanmar relations. I never came across any data claiming that Assam was with Myanmar...I should not comment on what is said in the Supreme Court. A lawyer says anything as part of an argument,” said Himanta.

Indian lawyer makes shocking claim, says state of Assam originally 'part of Myanmar, not India'

In a supremely awkward moment rarely witnessed in the world of global politics, United Kingdom's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak got locked out of 10 Downing Street along with his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte on Thursday (Dec 7).

As the photographers continuously clicked the photos of the two leaders, they were forced to awkwardly fumble in front of the doors after some staff accidentally locked them outside the headquarters of the politician.

In the hilarious video of the incident, Sunak is seen walking out of residence at 10 Downing Street in London to welcome Rutte. Just as Sunak left, the massive black door of the house, which had been adorned with a festive wreath, swiftly closed behind his back, literally leaving the conservative leader out in the cold.

The two leaders uncomfortably continued chatting while facing the building and waiting for the custodian to open the door. Minutes later, 43-year-old Sunak was forced to push against the door but to no avail.

Then, the two leaders swapped places on the doorstep and tried looking into two lower-level windows in the hope of catching the attention of someone present inside, as the media continued snapping them.

Finally, the door was opened and the men got inside the house. Before getting inside, 56-year-old Rutte had a giant smile on his face and waved to the crowd of reporters before following Sunak.
