Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, in his tenth Independence Day address, said that the situation in the violence-torn state of Manipur was improving, further urging the people across the country to stand with the northeastern state.

"In the past few weeks, during the period of violence in the North East, especially in Manipur, many people lost their lives, and the honour of mothers and daughters suffered a lot, but in the last few days, there are reports of peace. The nation is with Manipur,” the Prime Minister said at the outset of his 10th consecutive address from the Red Fort.

"The whole country stands with the people of Manipur. Peace is the only way to resolve all disputes. The Centre and the Manipur government are making every effort to ensure that peace returns to the state at the earliest," he said.

He then appealed to the people of Manipur to build on the peace that has been restored over the past few days.

Earlier today, the prime minister hoisted the national flag as the country celebrated its 77th Independence Day.

Taking to his official X handle, formerly known as Twitter, Modi extended heartfelt wishes to the countrymen.

"Best wishes on Independence Day. We pay homage to our great freedom fighters and reaffirm our commitment to fulfilling their vision. Jai Hind!," he wrote.

On his arrival at the Red Fort, PM Modi was received by Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, Raksha Rajya Mantri, Ajay Bhatt, and Defence Secretary, Giridhar Aramane.

PM Modi donned a Tricolour-themed turban, imbibing the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ spirit.


For his eighth Independence Day address, the Indian Prime Minister wore a saffron turban with red patterns and a long pink trail.



PM Modi donned a saffron-coloured turban which he paired with an orange and yellow safa (Rajasthani turban with a long trail).


In the year 2019, PM Modi sported a  red and orange leheriya turban with a tinge of green colour.


The Indian Prime Minister donned a plain orange and red safa, with a long trail that he paired with a white kurta.

PM Modi sported a beige bandhgala kurta paired with a yellow-red turban with a long trail for the Independence Day address.

PM Modi wore a red-pink-yellow coloured Rajasthani safa which he paired with a plain white kurta.

For his Independence Day address in 2015, PM Modi sported a kurta, paired it with a beige Nehru jacket and a turban with red and green stripes.

Narendra Modi opted for a Jodhpuri bandhej turban in bright red colour with green on the trail. He paired it with an off-white half-sleeved khadi kurta and a white signature taut churidar for his very first Independence Day address as Prime Minister.

Thousands of furious protesters chanting anti-government slogans marched in Bangladesh on Monday hours after a powerful jailed Islamist opposition leader died of a heart attack aged 83, officials said.

Delwar Hossain Sayedee, vice president of the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami party, died in a prison hospital early Monday evening, just over a decade since his conviction by a controversial war crimes court triggered the deadliest political violence in the country's history.

Thousands of mourners and supporters of Sayedee rallied outside the hospital after his death, chanting "Allahu akbar", or "God is greatest", with large numbers of police deployed.

"We won't let the blood of Sayedee go in vain", supporters shouted, with many blaming the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which is preparing for key general elections slated for January.

Hospital authorities said Sayedee was admitted to the health facility after suffering a heart attack in Kashimpur Prison outside the capital Dhaka on Sunday.

"He faced another heart attack today (Monday) at 6.45 pm (1245 GMT) and died at 8.40 pm," hospital director Brigadier General Rezaur Rahman told AFP, adding he had had five stents inserted into his arteries.

Jamaat-e-Islami announced Sayedee's death on its Facebook page, where it accused the authorities of "slowly turning him into a martyr without treatment in the prison".

Sayedee was sentenced to death in 2013 by a war-crimes tribunal on eight charges of murder, rape and persecution of Hindus, triggering deadly protests by thousands of supporters nationwide, leaving more than 100 people dead.

The party said tens of thousands of its supporters were arrested in a subsequent crackdown, and the party was only this year able to hold public protests again.

In 2014, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court said Sayedee should spend "the rest of his natural life" in jail for crimes during the 1971 liberation war with Pakistan.

Sayedee shot to prominence in the 1980s after he started preaching in some of the Muslim-majority nation's top mosques.

In his heyday he would draw hundreds of thousands to his sessions and CDs of his speeches were top sellers.

Even people who were not supporters of Jamaat attended his Koranic preachings.&nbsp;

Jamaat-e-Islami was banned for much of the 1970s for its support of Pakistan during the war, but by the 1990s it had become the country's third largest party and the biggest Islamist outfit.&nbsp;

Political analysts credit Sayedee's preaching for transforming the party into a major force.

Later, on being questioned by the press, Kharge cited "eye-related problems" as the reason for not attending the function further adding that he couldn't have made it at the AICC headquarters celebrations on time considering the tight security arrangements in and around Red Fort.

Kharge said, "Firstly, I have some eye-related problems. Secondly, I had to hoist the tricolour at my residence at 9.20 am, as per protocols. Then I had to come to the Congress office and hoist the tricolour there as well. So, I could not have arrived here on time (if he had attended the main event). Such were the security arrangements around the Red Fort that I wouldn't have been able to leave the main even before PM Modi."

The British rulers left us in such a mess that the country didn't even have the wherewithal to make a needle. Nehru-ji gave us IITs and IIMs, as well as the Bhakra Nangal Dam. When there was a shortage of food grains in the country. Lal Bahadur Shastri-ji and Indira Gandhi-ji brought about the green revolution. It was during our rule that India helped Bangladesh achieve independence."

He then claimed that democracy and the constitution of India were under threat, stating, "Today, the country is facing a massive threat, especially with regard to this constitution and functional democracy. The Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava hoisted India's flag and also felicitated widows and family members of deceased Gorkha soldiers. The Indian embassy in Kuwait hoisted the tricolour to mark the occasion of the 77th Independence Day.

Ambassador of India to Kuwait, Adarsh Swaika hoisted the flag and also read out President Droupadi Murmu's address.&nbsp;

"Glimpses of the 77th Independence Day celebrations at the Embassy of India in Kuwait. Ambassador hoisted the tricolour and read out Hon'ble Rashtrapatiji's address to the nation. The vibrant Indian community participated in large numbers despite being a hot and humid morning," Swaika said in a tweet.&nbsp;

The Indian embassy in Medan, a city in Indonesia, also celebrated the 77th Independence Day.&nbsp;

High Commissioner of India to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, was quoted as saying by&nbsp;ANI, “So many friends from the Indian community and PIO community turned out. Even shall we say friends of India, Britons who are not just of Indian origin also turned up.”

From Australia to Kuwait, this is how India's 77th Independence Day was celebrated abroad

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the country's 77th Independence Day, said on Tuesday (Aug 15) that he will return to Red Fort in 2024 and will present an account of the country's achievements, implying that he is confident of winning the general elections set to take place next year.&nbsp;

“The next five years are for unprecedented development. The biggest golden moment to realise the dream of 2047 is the next five years. The next time, on August 15, I will present before you the achievements and developments of the country from this Red Fort,” PM Modi said.&nbsp;

In his 10th consecutive Independence Day address, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for the year 2024, the Indian prime minister recited a poem to encourage people to fulfil the dream of making the country a developed nation by 2047.

"I firmly believe that when the country will celebrate 100 years of freedom in 2047, the country would be a developed India. I say this on the basis of the capability of my country and available resources. But the need of the hour is to fight three evils - corruption, dynasty and appeasement," he added.

I have to take more steps to see that the burden of inflation goes further down on the citizens of my country. We will take those steps and my efforts will continue...," he said.

<h2>India emerged as 'Vishwa Mitra', says PM</h2>

PM Modi also stated that during the COVID-19 pandemic, India emerged as a "Vishwa Mitra" (friend of the world) as the nation helped countries in need by supplying vaccine jabs to them.

"We have to make our country so strong that will contribute to Vishwa Mangal (Global welfare). After Covid, the way India helped the world during the time of crisis, India has emerged as Vishwa Mitra. When we talk about Vishwa Mangal which is India's basic idea that we have to expand," PM Modi said.&nbsp;

"We have presented philosophies and the world is now connecting with India over them. For the renewable energy sector, we said 'One Sun, One World, One Grid'. After Covid, we told the world that our approach should be of 'One Earth, One Help'. We can solve the problem when we address the issues of people, animals and plants equally. For the G20 Summit, we should focus on the idea of 'One World, One Family, One Future," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Era of serial blasts over</h2>

PM Modi also said that the 'era of serial blasts was over' as there was a notable drop in terror attacks.

"We used to hear about bomb blasts every now and then in previous years. There used to be public announcements alerting people about possible bomb threats. There used to be warning messages asking people not to touch items as they may contain explosive devices.

"Earlier, we would often hear about serial blasts. But now such incidents are very much on the decline. There has been a drastic reduction in terror-related incidents. The era of serial blasts is over. The Naxal strongholds, too, are experiencing a change for the better," PM Modi said.

While concluding his speech, the PM said, "It should be our resolve that when the tricolour is hoisted in 2047 it is of developed India."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, in his tenth consecutive Independence Day address, highlighted how women have played a significant role in the development of the country, stating that women scientists are the ones leading the Chandrayaan mission.

"The one thing that will take the country forward is women-led development. Today, we can proudly say that India has the maximum number of pilots in civil aviation. Women scientists are leading the Chandrayaan mission," PM Modi said.

"I want to tell the mothers, sisters and daughters that today the country has progressed due to the power of you all," he said.&nbsp;

He praised the role of women scientists in India's latest space mission, Chandrayaan-3. The craft is currently orbiting the moon and India is aiming to become&nbsp;the fourth country in the world to achieve a successful soft landing on the Moon after the United States, former Soviet Union, and China.

Chandrayaan-3 is India's third lunar mission and the second attempt at achieving a soft landing on the Moon's surface after the unsuccessful 2019 lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2.

The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft was launched on GSLV Mark 3 (LVM 3) heavy-lift launch vehicle successfully from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota on July 14. It is scheduled to land on the surface of the moon on August 23.

Meanwhile, PM Modi in his address also took the opportunity to thank the farmers for their efforts that helped India progress in the agriculture sector.&nbsp;

PM Narendra Modi highlights significance of women-led development in Independence Day address

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, in his 10th Independence Day address, announced that the government will launch 'Vishwakarma Yojana' in the month of September with an initial spending of Rs 13,000 crore to Rs 15,000 crore for those with traditional skills.

"The government will launch the Vishwakarma Scheme with an allocation of Rs 13,000 to 15,000 crore in the next month for those with traditional skills," PM Modi said while addressing the country from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

In his address to the nation on the 77th Independence Day, Modi said the scheme is especially for skilled workers like barbers, goldsmiths, washermen etc.

The scheme will be launched next month, on Vishwakarma Jayanti which falls on September 17, 2023.

The scheme was announced in the Budget 2023.&nbsp;

The Prime Minister Vishwakarma Scheme is aimed&nbsp;at improving the grade, ranking and reach of products and services of artisans and craftspeople and incorporating them with the domestic and global value chain.

This would further result in the economic empowerment of workers that fall under this scheme.

In his address, PM Modi also laid special emphasis on the significant role played by women in the development of the country.

"I want to thank the mothers, sisters and daughters of my country for their capability. I pay my deep regards to our parivaarjans, our farmers, our labourers... Our professionals, be they scientists, engineers, nurses, teachers or professors, everyone is giving their best to ensure a bright future for Maa Bharti," the PM said.&nbsp;

"In the past few weeks, during the period of violence in the North East, especially in Manipur, many people lost their lives, and the honour of mothers and daughters suffered a lot, but in the last few days, there are reports of peace. The nation is with Manipur,” the Prime Minister said at the outset of his 10th consecutive address from the Red Fort.

"The whole country stands with the people of Manipur. Peace is the only way to resolve all disputes. The Centre and the Manipur government are making every effort to ensure that peace returns to the state at the earliest," he said.

He then appealed to the people of Manipur to build on the peace that has been restored over the past few days.

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv on Saturday in the latest demonstration against the hard-right government's controversial judicial reform plans that opponents see as a threat to democracy.

Since the government revealed the reform package in the month of January, thousands of Israelis joined weekly protests in what has turned out to be the biggest demonstration movement in the history of Israel.

While protests have been staged in many cities including Jerusalem, the epicentre has been the commercial hub of Tel Aviv, where demonstrators have taken to the streets and marched every Saturday against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

"Democracy, democracy," protesters chanted as they marched on Saturday. "We won't give up until it gets better."

"Despite months of protests, things are not going the way we wanted as one important part of the judiciary overhaul has been passed a few weeks ago," protester Ben Peleg, 47, told AFP.&nbsp;

"But if we continue to apply pressure on the streets, there is a possibility that we can still stop these changes."&nbsp;

Last month, the Israeli parliament voted to limit the so-called "reasonableness" law.

The new legislation constrains judicial review by Israel's top court of some government decisions, and critics fear it could pave the way to a more authoritarian government.&nbsp;

Israel's ally United States has termed parliament's vote as "unfortunate" and repeatedly raised concern about the political turmoil.

Protesters take to streets in Israel against Benjamin Netanyahu's judicial overhaul

Niger's detained president Mohamed Bazoum&nbsp;was seen by his doctor on Saturday amid rising concerns for his health condition, said his entourage.&nbsp;

63-year-old, Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown on July 26 by his presidential guard which has since held him and his family in detention at his official residence in the capital Niamey.

The European Union, the African Union and the United Nations joined others in raising concerns for Bazoum after reports describing deteriorating detention conditions emerged on Friday.

As per news agency AFP reports, a member of his entourage told that Bazoum "had a visit by his doctor today", further adding that the physician had also brought food for Bazoum, his wife and son. "He's fine, given the situation," the source added.

Earlier this week, Human Rights Watch said that it spoke with Bazoum. The ousted leader described the treatment meted to&nbsp;him, his wife and their unwell 20-year-old son as "inhuman and cruel", said HRW.

"I'm not allowed to receive my family members (or) my friends who have been bringing food and other supplies to us," the group quoted him as saying.

"My son is sick, has a serious heart condition, and needs to see a doctor," he was quoted as saying. "They've refused to let him get medical treatment."

UN rights chief Volker Turk on Friday said Bazoum's reported detention conditions "could amount to inhuman and degrading treatment, in violation of international human rights law".

With the prospect of military intervention by the Western African leaders looming large, reports have emerged that the Niger coup leaders have threatened to kill ousted President Mohamed Bazoum if the neighbouring countries resort to any&nbsp;forceful steps for restoring his rule.

During a meeting with US Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, the Niger military leaders said they would kill Bazoum if the West African bloc ECOWAS uses any military force, news agency AP citing two Western officials reported on Thursday (Aug 10).

The report comes hours after the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) reiterated its earlier threat and ordered the activation of its standby force.

At least seven people lost their lives after a mosque in the Nigerian city of Zaria collapsed during prayers on Friday (August 11), said the officials.

The incident left several others injured, the officials added.

Zaria Emirates Council spokesman Abdullahi Kwarbai said that the incident took place as hundreds of faithful observed afternoon prayers at the city's central mosque.

"Four bodies were found initially, and then three others were found after the rescue team searched the collapsed mosque," he said.

As per eyewitness Muhammed Tukur, a day before the incident took place, the authorities said that they would renovate the mosque.

But in the end, we give Allah the praise because he protected us, because the mosque is divided into different segments and it is one of the segments that it happened. And when Allah arranges for something to happen, it will happen. Yesterday they were saying they will renovate and upgrade the mosque and then this happened. We believe it was their time to die in that place and God will accept their prayers,” Reuters news agency quoted eyewitness Muhammed Tukur as saying.

Emir of Zazzau, Ahmad Bamalli said, “I was meant to understand that about seven people have been taken to Zazzau hospital and while we are waiting for district heads and lieutenant to come back to us with reports of what they’ve seen in the hospitals. So many people came here to help rescue the victims.”

Such incidents of building collapse are frequent in Africa's most populous country, as the regulations here are poorly enforced and the material used for construction is often substandard.
