Palestinian militant group Hamas said that on Moscow's request, it is trying to find eight Russian-Israeli dual citizens who were held captive during its attack on Israel to free them, Russian news agencies reported on Saturday (Oct 28).

Russia, which has begun diplomatic efforts to free hostages held in Gaza, does not consider Hamas to be a terror group and has good relations with it.

"From the Russian side, via the foreign ministry, we received a list of citizens that have dual citizenship," senior Hamas representative Moussa Abu Marzook was cited as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.&nbsp;

"We are looking for those people... It is hard but we are looking. And when we find them, we will let them go."&nbsp;

"We are very attentive to this list and will process it carefully because we consider Russia to be the closest friend," he said. &nbsp;

"About the peaceful citizens that were taken and that are now in Gaza, we treat them as guests."&nbsp;

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Israel's bombardment of Gaza is against international law and imperils creating a cataclysm that could last for years.

Lavrov made the remarks in an interview with the Belarusian state news agency Belta, which released them on Saturday.

"While we condemn terrorism, we categorically disagree that you can respond to terrorism by violating the norms of international humanitarian law, including indiscriminately using force against targets where civilians are known to be present, including hostages that have been taken," said Lavrov.

"If Gaza is destroyed and 2 million inhabitants are expelled, as some politicians in Israel and abroad propose, this will create a catastrophe for many decades, if not centuries," warned Lavrov.

"It is necessary to stop, and to announce humanitarian programmes to save the population under blockade."

Lavrov also said that Russia was in close contact with Israel too.

"We remain in full contact with Israel, and our ambassador is regularly in touch with them," said Lavrov.

"We are sending signals about the need to seek a peaceful solution and not to follow through with this announced 'scorched earth' strategy."&nbsp;

Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss in a letter to her successor Rishi Sunak, on Thursday (Oct 26), asked him to "reconsider" his decision to extend an invite to China for the upcoming AI summit.

Truss said that she was "deeply disturbed" to learn that the British government intended to welcome representatives of China who have in the past abused technology for its own gains and have devalued freedom and democracy.

Expressing her disappointment, she took to her official X account and said, "China should not be invited to the UK's AI Summit at Bletchley Park. We should be working with our allies, not those seeking to subvert freedom and democracy. I have written to the Prime Minister requesting that the invitation be rescinded."

She, in the letter, hit out at the Chinese state which she said had used technology to "aid its oppression of millions and attack on freedom and democracy”. &nbsp;

“The regime in Beijing has a fundamentally different attitude to the West about AI, seeing it as a means of state control and a tool for national security,” she warned in the letter shared on X.

She further in the letter stated that the above-mentioned reasons were why the deputy prime minister of the UK in 2020 when he was serving as digital secretary, had removed all Huawei equipment from the UK's 5G networks.

Short-form video hosting platform TikTok&nbsp;on Friday (Oct 27)&nbsp;rebuffed accusations by the Malaysian government that it was restricting content supporting the Palestinians, saying that the claim was "unfounded".

As per Reuters, a TikTok spokesperson&nbsp;in an email to the news agency rejected the claims and said that their firm is committed to safeguarding the community.

"The claim is unfounded. Our community guidelines apply equally to all content on TikTok, and we're committed to consistently enforcing our policies to protect our community," the spokesperson said.

Tech giant Meta responded saying there was "no truth" to the allegations levelled against the organisation by Kuala Lumpur and that it had no intention to suppress the voices of Palestinians on its platform.

Both Meta and TikTok designate Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement that governs Gaza, a "dangerous organisation" and restrict content glorifying it.

Malaysia's communications regulator on Thursday (Oct 26) issued a warning to tech giant Meta and TikTok over allegedly restricting pro-Palestinian content on their respective platforms.

Communications Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, took to his official X account and said that he would take a very firm approach if the social media firms fail to address this concern.

"If this issue is ignored, I will not hesitate to take a very firm approach and stance," the minister said in a post.

Fahmi further said that many parties had called on the government to take stern measures against social media platforms for allegedly blocking pro-Palestinian content.&nbsp;

"Our policies are designed to keep people safe on our apps while giving everyone a voice," the spokesperson said on Thursday as per news agency Reuters.

Fahmi said that his country had a right to freedom of speech regarding the Palestinian cause, further reiterating that the right would not be taken away.

TikTok rejects Malaysian allegations claiming it restricts pro-Palestinian content on platform

Israel on Friday (Oct 27) accused the Palestinian militant group Hamas of abusing hospitals in the Gaza Strip for military purposes as the conflict in and around the Palestinian territory intensifies.

The Israeli military said that Hamas was using the hospital as a shield for its tunnels and operational centres.

"Hamas has turned hospitals into command and control centres and hideouts for Hamas terrorists and commanders," Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Israel's chief military spokesman, told a news conference.

Hagari said Hamas was using the hospital system to hide its command posts and entry points into the comprehensive tunnel network under Gaza.

He specifically identified Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest in Gaza, as one from which Hamas militants were operating.

"Hamas has turned hospitals into command and control centres and hideouts for Hamas terrorists and commanders. Additionally, I can confirm that according to the intelligence we have in our hands, there is fuel in hospitals in Gaza," Hagari said.

"Hamas terrorists operate inside and under Shifa Hospital and other hospitals in Gaza," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also took to his official X account and shared an illustration-based video showing how the militant group used Shifa Hospital as a shelter for its military operations from both above and below the ground.

Earlier, the Commissioner General for the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, rejected that any aid was being redirected.

"We have solid monitoring mechanisms... UNRWA does not and will not divert any humanitarian aid into the wrong hands," Lazzarini said.

Hamas' armed wing on Thursday (Oct 26) claimed that "almost 50" Israeli hostages held captive by the militant group&nbsp;were killed after Israel began its counter-offensive against the Palestinian enclave.

"(Ezzedine) Al-Qassam Brigades estimates that the number of Zionist prisoners who were killed in the Gaza Strip as a result of Zionist strikes and massacres has reached almost 50," the group said in a statement issued on its Telegram channel, as per news agency AFP reports.

"We have informed the families of 224 hostages. This number is changing based on the intelligence we obtain," military spokesman Daniel Hagari told reporters.&nbsp;

"It will continue to change. The effort to return the hostages is a top priority."

As per the Israeli government, at least half of the hostages have foreign passports.

Police circulated pictures from one of the crime scenes, where the suspect, a bearded man donning a brown hooded sweatshirt and jeans, can be seen armed with what appeared to be a semi-automatic rifle.

Public school districts in the area canceled classes on Thursday and police urged residents to stay indoors.

"A large law enforcement response from multiple surrounding agencies assisted the Lewiston police department in trying to identify who this individual was and what was happening. As you can imagine, this was a very fast-paced, fast-moving, very fluid scene. A very dangerous scene that these guys and girls were going into.18 people are now deceased at this time", said Colonel William Ross.

"The investigation into the person responsible for this identified a vehicle located at the Pejepscot boat landing in Lisbon. That person through the registration of that vehicle was identified, that’s been stated earlier, as a Robert Card born in 1983. Several of the deceased have been identified and their families' next of kin have been notified. Approximately eight people at this point have been identified. 10 people, 10 of these victims still need to be identified at this time. Currently, there is an arrest warrant for 8 counts of murder for Mr. Card. The reason it's 8 counts is because 10 people have not yet been identified. As those people are identified the counts will probably go to the total of 18," Ross added.

<h2>'Dark day for Maine'</h2>

Governor Janet Mills, while addressing a press briefing, said that it was a dark day for Maine and that Card is considered armed and dangerous.

"This is a dark day for Maine, Card is considered armed and dangerous and police advise that Maine people should not approach him under any circumstances."&nbsp;

She further said that the police have issued a Shelter-in-Place order for Lewiston, Lisbon and Bowdoin as the assailant is still at large.

"Maine State Police have issued a Shelter in Place order for Lewiston, Lisbon and Bowdoin, as the manhunt for that person of interest, Robert Card of Bowdoin continues. I will let law enforcement speak to the ongoing manhunt and to their investigation," Mills said.

“I ask Maine people to join me in offering our comfort to the families and friends who have lost someone, and in offering our prayers for swift recovery for those who are healing in Maine’s hospitals today. I know it's hard for us to think about healing when our hearts are broken. But I want every person in Maine to know that we will heal together," she added.

Maine mass shooting suspect still at large, Governor Janet Mills calls it 'a dark day'

With an upsurge in violence across the West Bank, the Biden administration has begun to rush its defensive systems into the war-torn region amid fears of broader escalation by Iran and its proxies.&nbsp;

The move by the United States to strengthen its defence capabilities comes after attacks targetting US troops in other parts of the Middle East injured nearly two dozen US personnel since Oct 18.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had also released a statement saying that the recent US deployments to the region were aimed at thwarting the assaults purportedly designed to widen the Israel-Hamas conflict.

"We're concerned about potential escalation. In fact, what we're seeing … is the prospect of a significant escalation of attacks on our troops and our people throughout the region," Austin told ABC's "This Week" programme. "If any group or any country is looking to widen this conflict ... our advice is: don't."

<h2>US military under attack</h2>

Over the past week, American troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East—Iraq and Syria—have come under attacks. There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq.

Ain al-Asad airbase, which hosts US and other international forces in western Iraq, was targeted by drones and missiles on October 19 evening. Multiple blasts were reportedly heard inside the base.

The attack came after rockets hit another military base hosting US forces near Baghdad’s international airport on Thursday, Iraqi police said.

A day before on Wednesday, US forces in Iraq were targeted in two separate drone attacks, with one causing minor injuries to a small number of troops even though the US military managed to intercept the armed drone.

The spate of attacks on the US military in the Middle East comes amidst the Israel-Hamas war that has divided the Western nations and the Gulf.

<h2>900 US troops heading to Middle East</h2>

The Pentagon on Thursday said that about 900 additional US troops were either heading to the Middle East or had already arrived there to bolster air defences to protect US personnel amid a surge in attacks in the region.

"As part of our efforts to deter a broader conflict and further bolster U.S. force protection capabilities I can confirm that since our initial force posture announcement, approximately 900 troops have subsequently deployed or are in the process of deploying to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. These include forces that have been on 'prepare to deploy' orders and which are deploying from the continental United States," Pentagon Press Secretary Brigadier General, Patrick Ryder said.

"Deployed and deploying units include a terminal, high altitude area defence battery from Fort Bliss, Texas; Patriot Batteries from Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Patriot and Avenger batteries from Fort Liberty, North Carolina and associated air defence headquarters elements from Fort Bliss and Fort Cavazos, Texas," he added.

Earlier, the Pentagon had announced that Washington is sending an additional squadron of F-16 Fighting Falcon to work alongside an array of capabilities already sent by the United States to the region in recent days in order to further enhance the ability of US forces to defend themselves.

“Our message to any country or group thinking about trying to take advantage of this situation to widen the conflict is: Don't,” warned Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder.

<h2>US sends THAAD, Patriot systems</h2>

The Pentagon said that it was deploying a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot air defence missile system battalions to the Middle East.

In recent weeks, the United States has sent a significant amount of naval power to the Middle East, including two aircraft carriers, their support ships and about 2,000 Marines.

US President Joe Biden warned Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei against targeting US personnel in a rare message, the White House said on Thursday (Oct 26).

On Wednesday, Biden said that he had warned Iran that the US would respond if its forces were targeted.

"My warning to the ayatollah was that if they continue to move against those troops, we will respond, and he should be prepared. It has nothing to do with Israel," he told reporters.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Iran's state news agency IRNA, citing an unnamed source, stated that Washington had sent Tehran as well as its allies like Lebanese Hezbollah, messages saying that it wasn't seeking to escalate the war, urging them to exercise restraint.

"The United States cannot both send military equipment to the Israeli regime and take charge of managing the war with one hand, while issuing political messages with the other hand, and speak about its opposition to the expansion of the war," IRNA cited the unnamed source as saying, adding Iran's allies "act independently and are not subject to Tehran's orders."&nbsp;

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, while speaking at the United Nations, said that Hamas was ready to release civilian hostages but only when 6,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons were released.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran stands ready to play its part in this very important humanitarian endeavour, along with Qatar and Turkey. Naturally, the release of the 6,000 Palestinian prisoners is another necessity and responsibility of the global community," Amirabdollahian said.

He further warned the United States that if Israel's counter-attacks against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza did not stop, then Washington would "not be spared from this fire."

"I say frankly to the American statesmen, who are now managing the genocide in Palestine, that we do not welcome (an) expansion of the war in the region. But if the genocide in Gaza continues, they will not be spared from this fire," he told a meeting on the Middle East at&nbsp;the 193-member General Assembly.

As per news agency Reuters, a poll released on Friday (Oct 27), suggested that nearly half of the Israelis wanted defence forces to halt the ground invasion out of fears that at least 224 hostages were reported to be held there.

The Russian newspaper Kommersant quoted a member of a Hamas delegation visiting Moscow as saying that time was needed to locate all those who had been abducted by various Palestinian factions in the Hamas attack on October 7.

"They seized dozens of people, most of them civilians, and we need time to find them in the Gaza Strip and then release them," Abu Hamid said.

He said Hamas, which has freed four hostages so far, had made clear it intended to release "civilian prisoners".

But this required a "calm environment", he said, repeating an assertion that Israeli bombing had already killed 50 of those held.&nbsp;

Malaysia warns Meta, TikTok over allegedly restricting content supporting Palestinians

Hamas' armed wing on Thursday (Oct 26) claimed that "almost 50" Israeli hostages, held captive by the militant group, were killed after Israel began its counter-offensive against the Palestinian enclave.

"(Ezzedine) Al-Qassam Brigades estimates that the number of Zionist prisoners who were killed in the Gaza Strip as a result of Zionist strikes and massacres has reached almost 50," the group said in a statement issued on its Telegram channel, as per news agency AFP reports.

Earlier, the Israeli army said that 224 people were kidnapped by militants during the attack that claimed the lives of 1,400 people, mostly civilians.

"We have informed the families of 224 hostages. This number is changing based on the intelligence we obtain," military spokesman Daniel Hagari told reporters.&nbsp;

In a statement, she said that when evacuation routes are bombed, "people are left with nothing but impossible choices. Nowhere is safe in Gaza."

The army said overnight its forces hit "numerous terrorist cells, infrastructure and anti-tank missile launch posts".

The operation in northern Gaza came in "preparation for the next stages of combat", the military said.

The raid by the army came after PM Netanyahu, during a televised address said that "we are in the midst of a campaign for our existence".&nbsp;

'Almost 50' hostages killed in Israel raids, says Hamas armed wing

China and Bhutan on Tuesday signed a "Cooperation Agreement” outlining the responsibilities and functions of the Joint Technical Team (JTT) on the delimitation and demarcation of the boundary between the two countries after their 25th round of border talks here.

Bhutan’s Foreign Minister Dr. Tandi Dorji, who is currently visiting Beijing, and China’s Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong held the 25th Round of Boundary Talks on Monday and Tuesday. On the sideline of border talks, Dorji met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Tuesday and held talks with Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday during which they urged Bhutan to establish diplomatic ties with China and resolve the boundary issue as soon as possible to transform the relations between the two neighbours into legal form.

The two sides held in-depth discussions on the boundary negotiations and noted the progress made through a series of Expert Group Meetings since the 24th Round of Boundary Talks in 2016, a joint press release issued by the Bhutanese Foreign Ministry said.

During the talks, the two leaders of the delegations signed the Cooperation Agreement between Bhutan and China on the Responsibilities and Functions of the Joint Technical Team (JTT) on the Delimitation and Demarcation of the Bhutan-China Boundary, it said.

The JTT was established during the 13th Expert Group Meeting to assist the Expert Group in the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Three-Step Roadmap. The two sides agreed to continue working together to simultaneously push forward the implementation of all the steps of the Three-Step Roadmap, it said, adding that both sides agreed to build on the positive momentum.

The discussions were held in a warm and friendly atmosphere in keeping with the ties of friendship and cooperation between Bhutan and China. The two sides also exchanged views on enhancing bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest, the press release said. In his meeting with Dorji, Han said both sides agreed to accelerate the boundary demarcation process and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Han said that China and Bhutan are friendly neighbours and although the two countries have not yet established diplomatic relations, they have long maintained friendly exchanges. "China always respects Bhutan's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and is willing to strengthen exchanges at all levels and in all fields, expand practical cooperation on the economy, trade, culture and tourism, and accelerate the boundary demarcation process and the establishment of diplomatic relations with Bhutan to bring more benefits to the two countries and the two peoples," Han said.

For his part, Dorji told Han that the Bhutanese government attaches great importance to the development of relations with China and abides firmly by the one-China principle. Both sides have firm determination and a sincere desire to demarcate their boundaries and establish diplomatic relations at an early date, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Wang told Dorji that the restoration of diplomatic ties will serve the long-term interests of both countries, a Chinese Foreign Ministry press release here said.

“The conclusion of boundary negotiations and the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Bhutan fully serve the long-term and fundamental interests of the country and nation of Bhutan," Wang said.

China is ready to work with Bhutan in the same direction, seize the historic opportunity, complete this important process as soon as possible, and fix and develop China-Bhutan friendly relations in legal form," Wang, also a member of the powerful Political Bureau of the ruling Communist Party, told Dorji.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry press release quoted Dorji as saying that Bhutan firmly abides by the one-China principle meaning Taiwan and Tibet are part of China and stands ready to work with China for an early settlement of the boundary issue and advance the political process of establishing diplomatic relations.

China and Bhutan do not have diplomatic relations but maintain contact through periodic visits by officials. While Beijing resolved the boundary disputes with the 12 other neighbours, India and Bhutan are the only two countries China has yet to sign the border agreements. China in recent years stepped up efforts to establish full-fledged diplomatic ties with Bhutan and to expedite negotiations to reach a settlement for the vexed border dispute which was complicated by Beijing's attempts to claim Doklam despite Thimphu's assertions that the area belonged to it.

China's attempts to build a road in the Doklam plateau in 2017 resulted in an India-China stand-off triggering tensions between the two neighbours. India strongly opposed the construction of the road by the Chinese military at the Doklam tri-junction as it would have impacted its overall security interests since it runs close to the narrow Siliguri Corridor also known as the Chicken Neck connecting India with its north-east.

The standoff ended after Beijing dropped its plan to build the road. Also in 2020, China made a surprising claim on Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary in Bhutan at the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council by opposing funding for the project. Bhutan has lodged a demarche to the Chinese Embassy in India over China's claim over the sanctuary made at the GEF meeting.

China has also ramped up efforts to develop the villages located along borders with India Bhutan and Nepal with infrastructure development and preferential policies. Beijing and Thimphu held their 13th Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the Bhutan-China Boundary issues in Beijing in August this year.

Dorji's current visit to Beijing comes in the backdrop of remarks by Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering in March this year that Bhutan hopes to complete the demarcation of territories with China within one or two meetings.

"We do not encounter major border problems with China, but certain territories are not yet demarcated. We still have to discuss it and draw a line," Dr Tshering told Belgian newspaper La Libre in an interview published during his visit to Brussels in March this year.

As Tshering's remarks raised concerns in India considering the close ties, Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck visited New Delhi in April and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during which the two leaders resolved to expand the close ties between the countries.

Briefing the media on the talks between Prime Minister Modi and Bhutan King, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said the two countries share ties characterised by trust, goodwill, and mutual understanding. India and Bhutan remain in close touch relating to our shared interest, including security interest, he said.

After his interview stoked controversy, Tshering told The Bhutanese newspaper that he had said nothing new in his statements to the Belgian paper on Doklam and the Bhutan-China boundary talks. "I have said nothing new and there is no change in position," he said.

In his talks with Dorji on Monday, Wang also said China always prioritises neighbourhood diplomacy in its overall diplomacy and adheres to the principle that all countries, big or small, are equals. The Chinese press release also said Dorji expressed Thimphu's backing for President Xi Jinping's Global Security Initiative (GSI), the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the Global Cultural Initiative (GCI) to further Beijing's strategic initiatives.

China and Bhutan hold border talks, ink pact on JTT for delimitation, demarcation of boundary

A Hong Kong court, on Tuesday (Oct 24), banished a government plea to outlaw the inheritance rights of same-sex married couples, stating that the denial of such requests is "an unacceptably harsh burden".

The ruling by Hong Kong's Court of Appeal, as per activists, is a legal victory for campaigners for LGBT rights in the global financial hub in 2023. The activists say that this trend could encourage other jurisdictions in Asia, like Singapore and Japan, to review their stand on inclusion.

The court's verdict came in response to an appeal made against a 2020 court decision that same-sex married couples should be able to enjoy equal rights under the city's inheritance laws.

Hong Kong law does not permit same-sex marriage, as a result, many couples get married in the countries where it is legal.

Judges Peter Cheung, Maria Yuen and Thomas Au said in a written judgment that the city's secretary of justice, who led the government appeal, "failed in all grounds of appeal".

"There's no reason why foreign same-sex marriages cannot be similarly admitted as a matter of principle of equality of treatment," the judges wrote.

Some activists welcomed the decision but called for more comprehensive reform.

"We have been saying the best option for the government is to implement a comprehensive system to recognise same-sex partnership," said Jerome Yau, from the group Hong Kong Marriage Equality.

"It is our view that same-sex marriage is the only proven and permanent solution for Hong Kong," Yau told reporters.

Last week, a Hong Kong court rejected the government's attempt to deny same-sex couples the right to rent and own public housing.&nbsp;

Hong Kong does not have laws that explicitly allow same-sex marriage. However, there have been some developments and legal challenges in the region that may have had an impact on this issue since then.

It's worth noting that Hong Kong's top court ruled against legalising same-sex marriage in September.

At the same time, it affirmed the need for same-sex couples to have access to an alternative legal framework to meet their basic social requirements.

The government was given a two-year timeframe to create this framework.

"There's no reason why foreign same-sex marriages cannot be similarly admitted as a matter of principle of equality of treatment," the judges wrote. Some activists welcomed the decision but called for more comprehensive reform. "We have been saying the best option for the government is to implement a comprehensive system to recognise same-sex partnership," said Jerome Yau, from the group Hong Kong Marriage Equality.
