Israel's ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan pinned a yellow star&nbsp;on his chest during a meeting of the Security Council.

Erdan and his fellow delegates pinned yellow coloured star badges on their jackets with the words "Never Again" written on them, during a debate on Monday (Oct 30) about the counter-offensive launched by Israel against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in retaliation to the militant group's deadly onslaught on Oct 7.

Erdan, while denouncing the Security Council for "staying silent" over the unprecedented attacks by Palestinian militant group Hamas said, "Some of you have learned nothing in the past 80 years. Some of you have forgotten why this body was established."

"So, I will remind you. From this day on, each time you look at me you will remember what staying silent in the face of evil means," the ambassador said.

"Just like my grandparents, and the grandparents of millions of Jews, from now on my team and I will wear yellow stars," he said and stood up to pin the star.

He then said the stars were "a symbol of pride, a reminder that we swore to fight back to defend ourselves".

His action&nbsp;came as the&nbsp;15-member council has not yet condemned the Hamas attack even as 25 days have passed.

"We will wear this star until you wake up and condemn the atrocities of Hamas."

<h2>Why yellow-coloured stars?</h2>

The Nazis compelled Jews in Germany and other European countries, that it had occupied during World War II, to pin yellow stars onto their attire as part of a programme of persecution that peaked in the Holocaust. Nearly six million Jews were murdered in it.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called Hamas' deadly Oct 7 onslaught the most alarming against the Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Other leaders too have drawn direct comparisons between Nazi persecution of the Jews and Hamas' surprise attack on Israel which claimed the lives of approximately 1,400 people, mostly civilians.

However, Erdan's move also drew some criticism.&nbsp; 
 
Denouncing Erdan's move to display the yellow stars, the chairman of Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center on Tuesday (Oct 31) said that the act dishonoured victims of the genocide as well as the State of Israel.

"The yellow patch symbolises the helplessness of the Jewish people and being at the mercy of others," he said on social media platform X.

Police in India's southern stat6e of Kerala, on Tuesday (Oct 31), launched a probe against Union Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar for allegedly making statements on social media that stirred religious enmity after a series of blasts at Jehovah’s Witnesses convention, on Sunday (Oct 29), claimed the lives of three and wounded nearly 50 others.

Chandrasekhar was booked for the offences under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence) of the IPC and section 120 (o) (causing nuisance and violation of public order) of the Kerala Police Act.

As per news agency PTI reports, the FIR against the central minister filed on the complaint by a sub-inspector (SI) of the Cyber Cell of the Kochi city police, stated that Chandrasekhar posted statements and videos on his social media accounts with the intention of disruption.

<h2>Chandrasekhar hits out at Congress</h2>

Chandrasekhar took to his official X account and hit out at the Congress party saying that the FIR against him was registered for exposing the 'appeasement of Hamas' by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

India: Kerala police book Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar for ‘promoting religious enmity’

A police officer was shot dead by suspected tribal militants at Moreh in Manipur's Tengnoupal district on Tuesday (Oct 31).

The incident took place when Moreh SDPO Chingtham Anand, along with other police officers, was inspecting the newly constructed helipad at the Eastern ground in the border town, which as per news agency PTI reports, is dominated by Kuki-Zo community people.

A senior police official said that after being shot at, the SDPO was immediately rushed to a primary health centre in Moreh where he succumbed to the bullet injury.

The incident has prompted an operation in the area to capture the militants.

This comes two weeks after members of several civil society organisations, particularly the ones based in Moreh, demanded the state forces be removed from the border town.

As per news agency PTI reports, the Manipur police, in the last couple of days, have apprehended more than 10 Myanmarese for allegedly stealing items from abandoned residences of Meiteis and for illegally entering into the Indian territory.

To this, Manipur CM N Biren Singh had stated, "This happened when some particular organisations were protesting against the deployment of state police and commandos at Moreh town".

Reacting to the incident, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh took to his official X account and said that he was "deeply saddened" by the &nbsp;"cold-blooded killing" of SDPO.

"Deeply saddened by the cold-blooded killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, OC Moreh Police this morning. His dedication to serve and protect the people will always be remembered. The perpetrators will be brought to justice," he wrote.

More than 180 people were killed in the ethnic violence that erupted in the state on May 3 after the 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to stage a demonstration against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis comprises more than 53 per cent of Manipur's population which mostly lives in the Imphal Valley. At the same time, tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.

In a move to boost tourism, Thailand is set to waive off visa requirements for travellers coming from India as well as Taiwan from the coming month to May 2024, said a government official in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 31).

"Arrivals from India and Taiwan can enter Thailand for 30 days," spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said.

Thailand had scrapped visa requirements for Chinese tourists in September this year.&nbsp;

China ranked first in Bangkok's pre-pandemic tourism market with 11 million of the record 39 million arrivals in 2019.

As per the latest government data, nearly 22 million people visited Thailand from January to October 29, generating 927.5 billion baht ($25.67 billion).

Thailand is aiming at about 28 million arrivals in 2023, with the new government hoping the travel sector can compensate for continued weak exports that have restrained economic growth.

Last week, in a similar move, Sri Lanka had announced visa-free entry for India as well as six other countries, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand, in a bid to boost tourism with immediate effect until March 21, 2024.

The country's foreign affairs minister Ali Sabry made the announcement on Tuesday (Oct 24) on social media platform X.

"Cabinet approves issuing of free visas to India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia &amp; Thailand with immediate effect as a pilot project till 31 March,” he said.

The main suspect Robert R. Card, a US Army reservist, opened fire in a bowling alley and a bar in the city of Lewiston on Wednesday (Oct 25).

After an extensive manhunt of about two days, the 40-year-old assailant was found dead inside a cargo trailer parked on the lot of a recycling plant where he once used to work, the police said on Saturday.

Card reportedly took his own life and suffered from serious mental health issues.&nbsp;

Maine public safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck during a press briefing said that the shooter had been hearing voices and was suffering from paranoia.

"Clearly, there's a mental health component to this," he told reporters.&nbsp;

Sauschuck further revealed that investigators found a note that Card left to a loved one which had a password to his phone and bank account information. It had the tone of a suicide letter, he added.

<h2>Card tried to buy silencer for rifle months before shooting</h2>

Card had tried to buy a silencer for a rifle at a local firearms store months before the most lethal act of firearms violence in the state's history, ABC News reported citing the shop owner.

“He came in and filled out the form, he checked off a box that incriminated himself saying that he was in an institution,” Rick LaChapelle, owner of Coastal Defense Firearms, said. “Our staff was fantastic, let him finish filling out the form, and said, ‘I'm sorry, Mr Card, we cannot give you this… at this point in time, we cannot release this silencer to you because of the answers that you've given us'.”

LaChapelle added, "We did what we were supposed to do and hopefully saved a lot of lives by&nbsp;just following the proper procedures.”

He further said that if Card had succeeded in purchasing the silencer, the rampage would have gotten uglier because people at the bar and the bowling alley, would not have heard the firing.

“He could have spent more time in each location,” LaChapelle was quoted as saying by ABC News. “And it could have been more methodical, and my heart goes out to the people, the victims. This is just absolutely horrible, horrible. I'm frustrated that, I think, some of this could have been averted,” he further added.

The Maine shooting was one of the several hundred episodes of lethal gun violence that the United States witnessed this year.&nbsp;

<h2>Gun violence, so far, killed at least 35,275 people in US</h2>

In 2023, gun violence sprung up as clearly one of the most prevalent issues in the United States, with more than 565 incidents of mass shootings as of Oct 26, as per the Gun Violence Archive.

According to the data, the lethal episodes of firearms violence in the US have so far killed at least 35,275 people with nearly 1,157 victims in their teens and 246 being children.

The Gun Violence Archive estimated approximately 645 mass shooting incidents in 2022 and 690 in 2021.

At this time in 2022, the US had witnessed 559 mass shootings.

<h2>US holds approximately 40% of the world’s guns</h2>

According to an estimate by the Small Arms Survey, there are more than a billion guns in the world with a notable majority of them being possessed by civilians.

The research estimated that out of the 857 million civilian-held firearms estimated in 2017, 393 million were in the United States. This figure was more than those held by civilians in the other top 25 countries combined.&nbsp;

The study showed that the US outnumbered other countries by holding more than 40% of the world's guns.

In mid-September, a couple, along with their two kids and three dogs was killed after being shot at in their Chicago home. Later a man in his early 30s was suspected in the deaths.

Five members of a family succumbed to gunshot wounds in Lake Township, Ohio on Aug 24. Reportedly, the deaths were linked to a family dispute that turned ugly.

Oklahoma City

A 28-year-old assailant killed three young children, aged 9, 5 and 2 respectively, and his estranged wife before killing himself on Aug 16.

Hampton Georgia

A 40-year-old allegedly claimed the lives of four people in a suburb south of Atlanta on July 15. The deceased victims were in their 60s.&nbsp;

A handful of mammals, including humans and toothed whales, are known to have extended lifespans in females beyond their reproductive years.&nbsp;

However, a recent study has uncovered the very first pieces of evidence of female wild chimpanzees experiencing menopause and having a post-fertile life, which has been very rare in the animal kingdom.

"Chimpanzees have been studied in the wild for a long time, and you might think there's nothing left to learn about them," senior author Kevin Langergraber of Arizona State University told news agency AFP. "I think this research shows us that's not true."

Just like humans and other chimpanzee populations, a team of researchers from the University of California Los Angeles found out that fertility in western Uganda’s Ngogo community of wild chimpanzees declined after the age of 30, with no births observed after they aged 50.

After studying the mortality and fertility rates of 185 female chimpanzees at the Kibale National Park from the demographic data gathered from 1995 to 2016, the research team estimated the fraction of adult life spent in a post-reproductive state for all the females that were surveyed.

The hormone levels in the urine samples, collected from 66 female chimps were also measured by the researchers, linking it with the human menopause. It included an increase in the levels of follicle-stimulating and ovulating hormones, as well as decreasing levels of ovarian steroid hormones including estrogens and progestins. The chimps were of inconsistent reproductive levels and ages, varying from 14 to 67 years.

Ngogo females underwent a menopausal shift equivalent to that of humans, starting around the age of 50, said the researchers in their study published in the journal Science.

“The results show that under certain ecological conditions, menopause and post-fertile survival can emerge within a social system that’s quite unlike our own and includes no grandparental support,” said Brian Wood, UCLA associate professor of anthropology, referring to the grandmother hypothesis.

The researchers further found that just like humans, it was not distinctive for these female chimpanzees to live past the age of 50.

A female who reached adulthood at age 14 was post-reproductive for about one-fifth of her adult life, about half as long as a human hunter-gatherer, they said.

“We now know that menopause and post-fertile survival arise across a broader range of species and socio-ecological conditions than formerly appreciated, providing a solid basis for considering the roles that improved diets and lowered risks of predation would have played in human life history evolution,” said Wood.

Indian PM Modi dials Egypt's El-Sisi to raise caution against escalation of Israel-Hamas war

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday (Oct 28) said that Tel Aviv would explore "every option" available in order to secure the release of more than 220 hostages that were held captive by the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza during its onslaught on Oct 7.

He further stated that his country has begun the “second stage” of its war against the militant group.

“We have one main goal to beat the enemy and guarantee our existence,” he said at the press conference.

Netanyahu further elucidating on the military offensive remarked that the fighting inside the Gaza Strip would be "long and difficult" as the Israeli ground forces operate in the besieged Palestinian enclave for more than 24 hours.

Over three weeks after Hamas launched a brutal assault on Israel that left over 1,400 Israelis -- mostly civilians -- dead, the Gaza Strip-ruling militant group showed signs of fragile wartime reconciliation. Hamas said that it was ready to release the hostages it took as captives under the condition that Israel agree to free the purported Palestinian prisoners. Israel describes such Palestinian prisoners as Hamas operatives and a threat to its national security.&nbsp;

"The price to pay for the large number of enemy hostages in our hands is to empty the (Israeli) prisons of all Palestinian prisoners," Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Obeida said in a statement broadcast by the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa television channel.

"If the enemy wants to close this file of detainees in one go, we are ready for it. If it wants to do it step-by-step, we are ready for that too."

Netanyahu, during the press briefing, made no commitment to any exchange deal but told the families authorities would "exhaust every option to bring them (the hostages) home".&nbsp;

Now I'm leaving this campaign, but let me promise you, I will never leave the fight for conservative values, and I will never stop fighting to elect principled Republican leaders to every office in the land," he added,

Pence publicly split with former President Trump, criticising him for his role in the Jan 6, 2021, insurgence at the US Capitol.

The 64-year-old politician speculated that Republican primary voters would choose him for sticking to the US Constitution instead of following his former boss, Trump's orders, and playing along when asked to overturn the results of the 2020 elections.

His surprise withdrawal from the presidential race marks a pivotal moment in the campaign, spotlighting the tribulation for even Trump's loyal lieutenant in overpowering his former boss in the race to see who challenges Democratic President Joe Biden.&nbsp;

Trump chose Pence as his running mate for the 2016 elections. This was widely perceived as his move to solidify his support among conservative voters at that time. Pence remained by Trump's side throughout the many scandals during his tenure.&nbsp;

'This is not my time', former vice president Mike Pence withdraws from US presidential race

At least 35 people lost their lives and more than 50 others were injured in a horrific multiple-vehicle collision that took place on an Egyptian highway on Saturday (Oct 28), state media reported.

The incident occurred in the morning and involved a bus and several cars bound for Cairo on the main desert road in the Beheira governorate.

"A horrific collision on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road near Wadi al-Natrun led to the death of 35 people, at least 18 of whom burnt to death," said the Al-Ahram news website, indicating "at least 53 were injured".

Several videos and images of the crash shared on social media showed the deadly collision where an overturned lorry could be seen lying across the fast lane on the burnt tarmac.
