Security forces kill two terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, foil infiltration bid

In the latest attempt to create an escape passage for workers trapped inside a collapsed under-construction tunnel in India's Uttarakhand, a heavy-duty drilling machine, which was flown in by the Indian Air Force from Delhi, got into action and started boring through the rubble on Thursday (Nov 16).

Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways VK Singh had arrived at the site to take stock of the rescue operation when the drilling by the new machine began.

He said that the government and all its agencies were making efforts to complete the operation within two to three days and rescue all the 40 workers trapped inside.

"Government, all its agencies and experts with whom we can communicate--the efforts of all of us are aimed at rescuing the workers at the earliest. I have spoken with them and their morale is high. They understand that all efforts are being made for them and we are weighing all options to rescue them," Singh told reporters in Uttarkashi.

He said the labourers were confined in a small space of about two kilometres in the debris and they were sending in food water and oxygen via a pipe to the trapped workers.

"Our priority is to rescue them sooner. Efforts are being made for this. All the agencies are putting effort into this. A new machine is working, whose power and speed are better than the old machine. Our effort is to complete this rescue operation within two to three days. We are also taking the help of international experts. They know that the government is working to rescue them," the minister said.

<h2>PM Modi reviewing rescue operation</h2>

Earlier in the day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was reviewing the rescue operation.

"We are in regular contact with the trapped. All the arrangements for them are being made there. Everyone is safe. Work was done by the NHIDCL and the tunnel was on the verge of completion. Just 400 metres were left... Now we will review it all... PM Modi is reviewing the rescue operation and is continuously in contact with all of us," Dhami told news agency ANI.

Colonel Deepak Patil, the one helming the rescue efforts, said that the "Union Minister was here and he talked to the labourers. He assured them, and those labourers responded and they liked it."

He then said the drilling work had resumed and that the rescue operations were moving at a very fast pace.

Colonel Patil said that they have considered a third option for which "equipment and machinery are already on wheels."

Further elucidating on the drilling process, Patil said that they were deploying the &nbsp;New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), which combines a drill and blast technique.

"The primary thought process behind this method is to monitor the deformations as you go in. More deformations, more caution, use more rock bolts and use more primary support," he said.

As per news agency AFP, Skochilenko's backers, opposing judge Oksana Demiasheva's verdict, yelled "shame" and "we're with you Sasha" in the courtroom, voicing support for her.

Skochilenko, 33, is the latest among hundreds of Russians who have either been detained, imprisoned or fined for criticising Puin's large-scale Ukraine intervention.

In her final statement, Skochilenko told the judge that she was a pacifist who valued human life above everything else.

"Whatever decision you take, you'll go down in history," Skochilenko told the judge, according to a recording of her speech made by supporters.

"Everyone sees and knows that you are not judging a terrorist. You're not trying an extremist. You're not even trying a political activist. You're judging a pacifist," she added.&nbsp;

Skochilenko, as per news agency AFP, suffers from health issues like coeliac disease and a congenital heart defect.

An illustrator and musician, Skochilenko was detained in April 2022, which was around the same time as Russia's fierce blockade of Ukraine's port city of Mariupol.

Skochilenko, who is openly gay, has also said that "hatred towards minorities" in deeply conservative Russia could help explain the trial against her.

She had joined street protests in Russia in the first days of Moscow's offensive.

It would apply to natural and synthetic diamonds, and jewellery, from the beginning of 2024 and to Russian diamonds processed in third countries from next September.&nbsp;

The traceability mechanism is meant to be coordinated with G7 countries, including the United States, Canada, Britain and Japan.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared loneliness to be a severe global health threat and has launched several initiatives to tackle the prevailing issue.

WHO established an international commission to address the situation which will be helmed by the US surgeon general, Dr Vivek Murthy and Chido Mpemba, youth envoy at the African Union Commission.

The two will work parallelly to understand and address the health risks associated with social isolation and the effective solutions to it.

As per WHO, the group will consist of 11 “leading policymakers, thought leaders, and advocates,” including Murthy and Mpemba, and run for three years.

“High rates of social isolation and loneliness around the world have serious consequences for health and well-being. People without enough strong social connections are at higher risk of stroke, anxiety, dementia, depression, suicide and more,” said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “This WHO Commission will help establish social connection as a global health priority and share the most promising interventions.”

The absence of social connection, as per a WHO report, posed an equivalent, or even greater, risk of early death.

Social isolation also has a deep impact on physical and mental health, further stated the report. As per studies, loneliness is directly linked to anxiety and depression which is said to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by 30%.&nbsp;

This move comes after the coronavirus pandemic and its social and economic repercussions vandalised social connections.

“I am thrilled to work closely with an outstanding group of Commissioners on advancing social connection – a vital component of well-being. Together, we can build a world that is less lonely, healthier, and more resilient,” said Murthy.&nbsp;

“Given the profound health and societal consequences of loneliness and isolation, we have an obligation to make the same investments in rebuilding the social fabric of society that we have made in addressing other global health concerns, such as tobacco use, obesity, and the addiction crisis,“ he added.

NASA is calling out the ones who wish to send their names&nbsp;to deep space beyond Mars.

The American space agency in a unique move is giving a chance to all the space enthusiasts to add their name to its Europa clipper.

The names will be added to a microchip that will ride aboard the spacecraft as it explores Jupiter’s moon Europa.

The spacecraft will make the 1.8 billion-mile journey to explore the ringed planet's moon.

The campaign, which is dubbed “Message in a Bottle” by NASA is only six weeks away as it closes at 11:59 pm EST, Dec 31, 2023.

As per the space agency's official website, since the beginning of the campaign, nearly 700,000 names have been submitted.

The microchip, which will be attached to a metal plate, will be engraved with the original poem “In Praise of Mystery,” penned by US Poet Laureate Ada Limón to celebrate the mission.&nbsp;

The poem and the names will ride on the exterior of the spacecraft and will be like a message in a bottle as they make about 50 close flybys of the ocean world.

"The mission will log a half-billion miles (800 million kilometres) during these orbits as the spacecraft’s payload of science instruments gathers data on Europa’s subsurface ocean, icy crust, and atmosphere to determine if the moon could support life," said NASA's official website.

After the assembly of Europa Clipper is completed at JPL, the orbiter will be shipped to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida in preparation for its October 2024 launch.&nbsp;

Space enthusiasts can now send their names to Jupiter's moon Europa

A Japanese man, aged around 50, was arrested on Thursday (Nov 16) after crashing a car into a barricade near the entrance of the Israeli embassy in Tokyo, police said,&nbsp;amid global tensions over the Israel-Hamas war.

Mor Eliyahu, a spokeswoman for the Israeli embassy, said that the incident "is suspected to be a targeted vehicle ramming attack, and it is currently under investigation by local police", as per news agency AFP.

However, the police did not comment on the possible intentions of the unemployed resident who drove his car through the barricade into a fence at an intersection around 100 metres from the embassy.

As per the local media reports, a police officer sustained slight injuries in the crash.

"At around 10:55 am, the suspect, driving a minicar, suddenly turned to the left and rammed into a male police officer in his 20s who was patrolling for the Israeli embassy," news agency AFP quoted a police spokesperson as saying.

A fire department spokesperson said only that they received an emergency call and gave no further details.

"Around 11:00 am, I heard a huge bang, so I went outside to check out. Then I saw a policeman injured and in pain near the traffic barrier and it looked like he was bleeding. There was also a black car parked nearby," a restaurant employee working nearby told public broadcaster NHK.
