<p>The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) crashed shortly after Shehbaz Sharif`s government announced a 10 per cent tax on large-scale industries, a measure he promised will help save the country from bankruptcy.</p>

<p>At 11:40 am (local time), the market witnessed a steep dip with the KSE-100 losing 1,598 points and sinking to 41,100, the Dawn newspaper reported. The benchmark KSE-100 index was down 2,053 points At 12 pm.</p>

<p>As per the PSX rules, if the index goes five per cent above or below its last close and stays there for five minutes, trading in all securities is halted for a short period.Raza Jafri, the Intermarket Securities` head of equities blamed "massive taxes" as the reason behind the drop.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The market has reacted very negatively because it will severely hurt corporate profitability," he told Dawn.</p>

<p>The Pakistan Prime Minister today said that his government plans to impose a 10 per cent super tax on large-scale industries, and that "tough decisions" have been taken to protect the country`s economy.He announced the imposition of a super tax on cement, steel, sugar, oil and gas, fertiliser, banking, textile, chemical, beverage, and automobile industries.</p>

<p>"A 1 per cent tax has been imposed on people earning over PKR 150 million, 2 per cent on those earning over PKR 200 million, 3per cent on those earning over PKR 250 million and 4 per cent on those earning over PKR 300 million," he said.</p>

<p>He termed this measure as "tough decisions" in line with the federal budget for the next fiscal year 2022-23."I want to brief the people about those decisions and the actual [economic] situation of the country," Shehbaz was quoted as saying by Geo News.</p>

<p>"Our first motive is to provide relief to the masses and to reduce the burden of inflation on the people and facilitate them," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Our second motive is to protect the country from going bankrupt," he added.</p>

<p>Explaining the motives of his government for the super tax, he laid stress on the need to stabilise the economy of Pakistan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"These aren`t just words, this is the voice of my heart and InshaAllah we will be able to achieve all these targets," he emphasised.</p>

<p>In 2020, China announced goal of reaching peak carbon emissions by 2030 and becoming a carbon-neutral country by 2060. Although China has reported third consecutive quarter of carbon emission reductions last year, experts have attributed it to Covid pandemic.</p>

<p>Though China invests lot of money in wind and solar, its electrical system remains dependent on coal. It uses more than 50 per cent of the national supply.</p>

The findings have been published in The Astrophysical Journal. These findings have also been reported in 240th meeting of the American Astronomical Society.</p>

<p>The puzzling fate of the star has given researchers new insights into origins of explosions in the Universe.</p>

<p>The supernova that has seen the dead star shining brightly is called thermonuclear supernova.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Such type of supernovas are an important tool for measuring cosmic distances. Observations of these supernovas began in 1998. These observations since then have revealed that the Universe is expanding at an accelerating pace. This expansion has been attributed to Dark Energy. The true nature of the Dark Energy is still unknown. The discovery of Dark Energy, inspite of its unknown properties had bagged Nobel Prize of the year 2011.</p>

Star burns brighter even after supernova explosion

<p>It's real fun to observe astronauts in space bouncing around in zero gravity. Though we theoretically know that space does not have gravity, actually seeing zero gravity in action is amusing nonetheless.</p>

<p>Like solids, liquids act strange in zero gravity. But it's a bit hard to imagine how that would come to be.</p>

<p>An astronaut has come to our rescue. Chris Hadfield, a Canadian astronaut who is aboard the International Space Station (ISS) has shown everyone what happens when you wring a wet cloth in zero gravity.</p>

<p>The astronaut first takes a washcloth, packed to the size of a hockey puck. He takes the cloth out and wets it in water.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This may sound simple but how he does that in zero gravity is a thing to behold. Once the washcloth is wet with water, Hadfield proceeds to wring it.</p>

Astronaut shows what happens when you wring wet cloth in space

<p>The night sky is a sparkle to start with. The countless stars are just there for us to unravel their mystery. But just sometimes, when we are in the mood for some dreamy stargazing, weather plays a spoilsport.</p>

<p>It was to overcome this limitation exactly that Hubble Space Telescope was put in orbit. It eliminates the weather factor completely.</p>

<p>Hubble has been sending us mesmerising images for years. Another image has joined the long list. The space telescope has clicked a crisp photo of a sparkling galaxy. NASA has shared the image on Instagram and other social media feeds.</p>

<p>RAW chief Goel, a 1984 batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre, got second extension for one year.</p>

<p>"The appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Samant Kumar Goel, IPS (PB:84) as Secretary, Research &amp; Analysis Wing for a period of one year beyond his present tenure i.e. up to 30.06.2023," said the notification.</p>

<p>"The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives," the court said. Currently, the US Supreme Court is dominated by judges with a conservative view.</p>

<p>In the majority opinion, Justice Samuel Alito said "abortion presents a profound moral issue on which Americans hold sharply conflicting views.</p>

<p>"The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion," he said.&nbsp;</p>

Roe vs Wade reversed, US Supreme Court ends constitutional right to abortion

<p>US senators on Thursday (June 23) advanced a bipartisan bill that addressed gun violence in the country. The reforms are expected to be rubber-stamped by the House of Representatives. The bill approves a narrow package of new firearms restrictions and billions of dollars in mental health and school security funding</p>

<p>The bill is stil short of demands of gun safety advocates and President Joe Biden. But it has been hailed as a life-saving breakthrough.</p>

<p>Gun rights are enshrined in US Constitution and any attempt to introduce gun control meets stiff political resistance, especially from Republican party.</p>

<p>But shooting in Texas school in which 19 children lost lives created an uproar in public increasing pressure on lawmakers to act.</p>

<p>"This bipartisan legislation will help protect Americans," Biden said in a statement shortly after the Senate vote. "Kids in schools and communities will be safer because of it."</p>

<p>The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was backed by all 50 Democratic senators and 15 Republicans, includes enhanced background checks for buyers under the age of 21, $11 billion in funding for mental health and $2 billion for school safety programs.</p>

<p>It also provides funding to incentivize states to implement "red flag" laws to remove firearms from people considered a threat.</p>

<p>The bill also plugs the so-called 'boyfriend' loophole. This loophole let domestic abusers evade ban on buying firearms if they were not married to or living with their victim.</p>

<p>"Tonight, the United States Senate is doing something many believed was impossible even a few weeks ago: we are passing the first significant gun safety bill in nearly 30 years," Senate Democratic majority leader Chuck Schumer said after the legislation passed.</p>

<p>"The gun safety bill we are passing tonight can be described with three adjectives: bipartisan, common sense, lifesaving."</p>

<p>His Republican counterpart Mitch McConnell said the legislation would make America safer "without making our country one bit less free."</p>

<p>"This is a common-sense package. Its provisions are very, very popular. It contains zero new restrictions, zero new waiting periods, zero mandates and zero bans of any kind for law-abiding gun owners."</p>

US Senate advances bipartisan bill on gun safety

<p>Agreement in German parliament on Friday (June 24) paved way for Nazi-era law that limits information doctors and clinics can provide about abortion.</p>

<p>One of the most controversial sections of the penal code, Paragraph 219a, prohibits the "promotion" of abortion, a crime punishable by "up to two years of imprisonment or a fine".</p>

<p>The law was adopted in 1933 after Adolf Hitler came to power.</p>

<p>"It is high time," Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said in parliament.</p>

<p>He said that it was "absurd" and "no longer in step with the times" that doctor were not able to provide complete information on abortion while "every troll and conspiracy theorists" are free to spout their ideas about terminating pregnancies.</p>

Nazi-era law on abortion to be removed in Germany

<p>United Nations on Friday said that the shot that klled Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was fired by Isreali forces. The incident took places on May 11. The Palestinian-American journalist was wearing a vest marker 'press' and a helmet. She was covering Israeli Army operation in Jenin camp in West Bank.</p>

<p>"We find that the shots that killed Abu Akleh came from Israeli security forces," UN Human Rights Office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva.</p>

<p>"It is deeply disturbing that Israeli authorities have not conducted a criminal investigation.</p>

<p>"We at the UN Human Rights Office have concluded our independent monitoring into the incident.</p>

<p>"The shots that killed Abu Akleh and injured her colleague Ali Sammoudi came from Israeli security forces and not from indiscriminate firing by armed Palestinians, as initially claimed by Israeli authorities" she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She added that the information came from the Israeli military and the Palestinian attorney general.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have found no information suggesting that there was activity by armed Palestinians in the immediate vicinity of the journalists," Shamdasani said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In order to come to conclusion, the rights office inspected photo, video and audio material, visited the scene, consulted experts, reviewed official communications and interviewed witnesses.</p>

<p>The findings showed that seven journalists arrived at the western entrance of the Jenin refugee camp soon after 6:00 am.</p>

<p>At around 6:30 am, as four of the journalists turned into a particular street, "several single, seemingly well-aimed bullets were fired towards them from the direction of the Israeli security forces.</p>

<p>"One single bullet injured Ali Sammoudi in the shoulder; another single bullet hit Abu Akleh in the head and killed her instantly."</p>

<p>Israel has been urged by UN human rights chief Michelle Backlet to open a criminal investigation into Akleh's killing.</p>

<p>Notably, the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has filed a petition before the Deputy Speaker of the state assembly seeking the cancellation of membership of 12 rebel MLAs including Eknath Shinde for "not attending" the legislative party meeting held on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Apart from Shinde, Shiv Sena has sought disqualification of Prakash Surve, Tanaji Sawant, Mahesh Shinde, Abdul Sattar, Sandeep Bhumare, Bharat Gogawale, Sanjay Shirsat, Yamini Yadhav, Anil Babar, Balaji Devdas and Lata Chaudhari.</p>
