"We should be debating the issues the French are facing, this non-confidence vote is unfair", the prime minister told the parliament just before the vote.

"This non-confidence vote is just political tactics (...)Let's switch together to a culture of compromise," she added.

After enjoying a comfortable majority in the lower house during his first mandate, newly-reelected Macron lost his absolute majority in parliament in June's legislative elections and can no longer count on the chamber to rubber-stamp his reform agenda.

And finally, it has its feared jaws, immortalised by many movies as it was shown to (rather unfairly) chase and enjoy eating humans.&nbsp;

But the formidable lurker of the deep has been found to rather quickly run away from another predator. Can apex predator like the great white be actually scared of anything? It appears so.

Dyer Island in South Africa is considered to be Great White Shark capital of the world. Since 2017, researchers have recorded eight Great White Shark caracasses washed ashore. The number of great white sharks has dropped and they seem to be avoiding the waters in this area.

Initially, it was thought that overfishing and other human activities were driving the sharks away. But a research team led by marine biologist Alison Towner of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust found something else.

The wounds on these shark carcasses were distinctive. And almost all of them were missing liver or heart.

Using tracking data and information from local fisherfolk, the researchers zeroed in on what it was that was scaring Great White Sharks away.

It was a pair of Orca or Killer Whales. This pair was hunting the apex predator of the ocean and muching on the nutritious livers of their captured prey. The duo was so effcient in their hunting that remaining great whites scarpered away, not to be seen for months an end.

The team's findings have been published in African Journal of Marine Science.

The 73-year-old leader had taken refuge at a navy facility, a top defence official told AFP, before being brought to the Katunayake airbase -- which shares a perimeter fence with the country's main Bandaranaike International airport.

"He and his entourage were flown back to Colombo in two Bell 412 choppers," he added.

There was no official word from the president's office about his whereabouts, but several local media reports speculated he was set to leave for Dubai later Monday.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's office said Rajapaksa had officially informed him of his intention to resign, without specifying a date.

The WHO said 10 countries have not reported new cases for more than 21 days -- the disease's maximum incubation period.

Some 82 percent of the cases are in Europe and 15 percent are in the Americas.

The countries with more than 1,000 confirmed cases are Britain (1,351), Spain (1,256) and Germany (1,242), according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and WHO Europe.

Outside Europe, the WHO report counted 460 confirmed cases in the United States and 300 in Canada.

Sexual contact transmission route

In its first bi-weekly situation report on monkeypox, the WHO said that gender data was available on 4,406 cases, of which 99.5 percent were men.

"The outbreak continues to primarily affect men who have sex with men who have reported recent sex with one or multiple male partners, suggesting no signal of sustained transmission beyond these networks for now," the report said.

Men aged 18 to 44 account for 79 percent of cases, with the median age being 37.

There are six known cases among children aged under 18, and 25 known cases among healthcare workers.

WHO issues first situation report on spread of monkeypox

An indicative study published in Canada has said that South Asian communities may have suffered more than others during the peak of COVID pandemic. The study, COVID CommUNITY – South Asian, has been published in Canadian Medical Association Journal Open.

The study said that South Asian communities in Greater Toronto area “suffered disproportionately from Covid-19 in the first year of the pandemic.” This is in accordance with&nbsp;Covid-19 Immunity Task Force (CITF). The CITF was established by the Canadian government in 2020.

The study has been carried out by researchers from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. The researchers found that Regional Municipality of Peel had emerged as hotspot before vaccines were rolled out in 2021. Peel accounts for 10 per cent of the population of Ontario but it accounted for about 23 per cent of COVID cases in the area. Peel has a large South Asian Canadian community. City of Brampton was a hotspot. Peel and Brampton have largest concentration on Indo-Canadians in Canada

“One third of participants in this study were essential workers through the pandemic, and 20% lived in multi-generational households. These factors, along with lower socioeconomic status, are the primary determinants of the higher seropositivity rates in Peel’s South Asian community, instead of any innately biological cause,” said Sonia Anand, professor of medicine and epidemiology at McMaster’s Department of Medicine as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Dr Catherine Hankins, Co-Chair of the CITF said, “Understanding the factors that rendered any community or region a hotspot for Covid-19 will not only help us manage future pandemics. The insights can also inform Canada’s ongoing efforts to achieve more equitable health outcomes on a population-wide basis.”

A Mississippi court on Tuesday declines to block a near-total ban on abortions from coming into effect later this week. Judge Debbra Halford in Jackson, Mississippi denied a request by the state`s only abortion clinic to prevent officials from carrying out a near-total ban on abortion. The ban is due to come into effect on Thursday.

Jackson Women`s Health Organization, the abortion clinic cited 1998 ruling by the Mississippi Supreme Court in which it was held that right to privacy under the state`s constitution included a right to abortion.

However, Judge Halford expressed doubts that state high court would continue to uphold the decision.

Rob McDuff, a lawyer for the Mississippi clinic, called the ruling disappointing and said they were considering their options.

Mississippi is one of 13 states in the US where "trigger" laws are present. These laws are designed to ban/ restrict abortions once US Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v Wade judgment.

The US Supreme Court on June 24 overturned the landmark ruling that provided constitutional access to abortions to women in the US.

The conservative majority US&nbsp;Supreme Court`s decision gave states permission to ban abortion and nearly two dozen Republican-led states are now trying to do so, or have done so already.

The decision has ignited a wave of litigation by clinics in various states aimed at preserving the ability of women to obtain abortions based on protections in state rather than federal constitutions, as well as nationwide protests.

Mississippi court refuses to block implementation of abortion ban

A kid goat with extraordinarily long ears has become somewhat of a viral sensation. The Pakistani owner of the 'GOAT' goat is claiming that it has the longest goat ears in the world, a record for which may or may not exist. The goat is called Simba and it is currently living a pampered existence in Karachi. It was born last month with some really long ears. The ears have since grown and now measure 54 centimetres (21 inches)

Breeder Mohammad Hasan Narejo has already approached Guinness World Records to see whether his goat truly is the one with longest ears.&nbsp;

"Within 10 to 12 days of his birth he was already appearing in all the national and international media -- and won a beauty contest," a proud Narejo says.

"Within 30 days he became so popular that even a famous personality might take 25 to 30 years to achieve this level of fame."

Simba's ears are so long that Narejo has to fold them over his back to stop the little bleater from standing on them.

Narejo has also design a harness which lets Simba carry his ears around easily.

Narejo is wary of the attention Simba has attracted -- including from rival breeders -- and has resorted to prayer and tradition to try to fend off any ill will.

"We recite Koranic verses and blow on him to cast away the evil eye," Narejo said.

"Following a long tradition we inherited from our elders, we have fastened a black thread around him that is fortified with Koranic verses." 
Narejo plans to raise Simba as a stud to promote the image of Pakistan as a top goat breeding nation.

"Simba's Pakistan name must roam the whole world," he said.

According to its statement, one of the soldiers said Ukrainian medics treated him without anaesthesia and that he was "beaten, tortured with electricity" in captivity.&nbsp;

The soldier allegedly said he was left without food and water for days. &nbsp;
