Conservative Party is currently in the process of electing its new leader and thereby next UK prime minister who will succeed Boris Johnson, the current PM in caretaker role.&nbsp;

In order to progress to the next round of voting, candidates vying for the Conservative Party leadership had to obtain support of at least 30 Conservative MPs. The Conservative Party has 358 MPs in the parliament.

In Wednesday's vote, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss stood at third place with support from 50 MPs, Kemi Badenoch received 40 votes, Tom Tugendhat got 37 and Suella Braverman received 32 votes.

Russian Defence Ministry said on Wednesday (July 13) that Russia had shot down three Ukrainian fighter jets. As per details released during the daily briefing, the defence ministry said Su-25 and Su-24 fighter jets being used by Ukrainian air force were shot down over Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. Third Ukrainian fighter jet was MiG-29, which the ministry said was shot down in the Mykolaiv region in the southern Ukraine. Russia shot down three Ukrainian fighter jets, says Russian defence ministry

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (July 11) expanded fast-track route to Russian citizenship and made it available for all Ukrainians. Putin signed a decree to this effect. Till recently, only residents of Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk&nbsp;regions and residents of southern Zaporizhzhia and the Kherson regions were eligible for the fast-track route. Now, Putin's decree has made the mechanism available to all Ukrainians. There was no immediate reaction from Ukrainian officials on this development.

Between 2019, when the procedure was first introduced for the residents of Donetsk and Luhansk, and this year, more than 720,000 residents of the rebel-held areas in the two regions "about 18% of the population" have received Russian passports.

Jailed Kremlin-critic Alexei Navalny on Monday (July 11) launched an international anti-corruption organisation. The Russian opposition leader has taken the step a year after his Russian Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF) was outlawed as extremist. Navalny sends messages on his Telegram channel. The messages are carried from him by his lawyers who are allowed to contact him in the jail. The Telegram channel said that fund's advisory board would include former Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt, political scientist Francis Fukuyama, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and historian Anne Applebaum, and Navalny's wife, Yulia Navalnaya.

Last year, court ruling outlawed Navalny's older Foundation and in effect prohibitted his allies from running in elections. The ruling also gave authorities power to jail ACF acitivists and freeze their bank accounts.

On Monday, Navalny's social media feed said that his new foundation (Anti-Corruption Foundation International) will be&nbsp; "completely transparent and understandable". It was said that first funds for the foundation would come from 50,000 euro Sakharov Prize that Navalny received from European Parliament&nbsp;last year.

"As always, we are counting on your help and support, and we promise that we will work well," Navalny was quoted as saying.

In 2020, Navalny was jailed for violating bail conditions. At that time, he had returned from Germany, He was recovering from near-fatal poisoning with a Soviet-era toxin. He was allegedly poisoned when in Russia.

He was handed a fresh nine-year sentence this year for fraud and contempt of court. He maintains that the charges against him were fabricated.

Garret Brown and Hanno Rein, two researchers at University of Toronto have studied this possibility. They've found that gravity of the foreign star nudges orbits of some of the planets even by 0.1 per cent, it may wreak havoc.

So how close is too close for comfort?

The study has found that a distance of 23 billion miles between the Sun and the other star may make things a bit uncomfortable. This may appear a huge distance but just to put into perspective, Proxima Centauri, the star closest to our Siolar System is 24.8 trillion miles away. So 23 billion miles is much less of a distance.

Fortunately, the destruction of Solar System, if at all it happens, may not happen instantly. The process may take billions of years.

Twitter stocks took a tumble on Monday (July 12) after Tesla chief Elon Musk withdrew his bid to buy the social media giant for USD 44 billion. On Wall Street, stocks of the platform dropped by 5.46 per cent to USD 34.80 by around 7:05 am (11:05 GMT). It had lost 5.10 percent before the weekend.

Musk pulled the plug on the deal of Friday. He has accused the company of 'misleading' statements about number of fake accounts, as per letter from his lawyers. A copy of the letter was file with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

The billionaire's latest move to pull out of the deal that was inked in April has paved way for epic court battle over billion-dollar breakup fee.

Twiitter says that the number of fake accounts is less than five per cent. The billionaire says that the number is much higher.

According to several US media, Twitter has hired prominent New York law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen &amp; Katz. Twitter declined to comment to AFP.

After the news broke, Musk tweeted: "They said I couldn't buy Twitter. Then they wouldn't disclose bot info. Now they want to force me to buy Twitter in court. Now they have to disclose bot info in court," accompanied by pictures of him laughing.

For analyst Dan Ives at Wedbush Securities, "this is a 'code red' situation for Twitter and its Board as now the company will go head to head against Musk in a Game of Thrones court battle."

"We see no other bidders emerging at this time while legal proceedings play out in the courts."

USA on Tuesday (July 12) stepped forward and announced incentives for Pacific Island nations in a move widely seen to be aimed at countering Chinese influence. This has come after Kiribati, one of Pacific Island nations chose to stay away from the Pacific Island Forum meeting in Suva, Fiji. Kiribati has also withdrawn itself from the 18-member group.

On Tuesday, Kiribati islanders celebrated their Independence Day, however, President Taneti Maamau skipped the region`s first face-to-face meeting in three years as a matter of principle over a dispute involving its leadership, reported CNN.

There were speculations of Chinese hand compelling Maamau to leave the alliance. China has denied this and its foreign ministry has rejected these claims as 'completely groundless'.

The region has attracted attention of western powers after China's recent aggressive push to enhance ties with Pacific Island Nations.

A senior official of US administration official told reporters in a call tha the US was "significantly stepping up (its) game in the Pacific Islands."

"The incentives included more funding for fisheries, extra aid, and offers of new US embassies in the Pacific -- including one in Kiribati, which along with the Solomon Islands appears to be moving closer to China, reported CNN.&nbsp;

Other US commitments include tripling funding to USD 60 million a year for 10 years to secure US fishing rights in the Pacific, the release of America`s strategy on the Pacific Islands and the appointment of the first US envoy to the Pacific Islands Forum.

To achieve the US`s soft power goals, the Peace Corps will return to four countries including Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and Vanuatu and the US will increase aid funding to the region. The measures will be personally presented to Pacific leaders on Wednesday in a virtual address by US Vice President Kamala Harris -- underscoring Washington`s efforts to stress the Pacific`s importance to US strategy.

US showers incentives on Pacific island nations

We humans are among the weakest animals on Earth. And we know it. That's why millions of years of evolution has taught us to tackle animal encounters using one supreme technique.&nbsp;

Running away.

There are ample living things to run away from on land and when it comes to the sea... well that's a foregone conclusion as water isn't our domain to start with.

Such ingrained behaviour of us land mammals was on full display in a video shot in California. The beachgoers ran and ran for their livee as if being chased by Godzilla but the pursuers in this case were two sea lions, usually held to be cute when they are at a sufficient distance.

To be fair to those leaving everything and running away, the sea lions appeared to be fully grown and were charging at unusual speed for a cute blubbery sea creature. They don't bite. But people in the video weren't in a mood to leave things to chance.

The Tiktok video is being widely shared on social media.

Were the sea lions planning a mass bite-fest? Probably not, say the experts quoted in media reports.

Sea lion expert Eric Otjen of SeaWorld San Diego said such a behaviour is normal for these creatures around this time of the year.

This time of the year is breeding time for sea lions and males often fight to win females. Otjen told The Guardian that people on the beach were caught in crossfire of such a fight. The sea lion on the left was actually running away from one on right.

“He’s got swimmers all around him on his way back out, but they don’t bother him. What this is all about is his right to mate,” Otjen said, adding: “This behavior is not uncommon at all. The reason why the video has gotten like 10 millions views is because everybody is running like Godzilla is chasing them.”

These experts are trying to harness Centrifugal Force to create artificial gravity. They are designing a craft that will have a component that will revolve while in space. Astronauts inside that component would experience Centrifugal Force which will keep them steady on surfaces like gravity does on Earth.

The architecture will be cylindrical, 100 metres wide and upto 400 metres tall (328 feet wide and 1,312 feet wide). In order to create artificial gravity, it will complete one revolution every 20 seconds. This will generate 1G of gravity which will be equivalent to that on Earth.

If Humankind is able to achieve creation of artificial gravity, it will open a new vista of space exploration. Currently, astronauts cannot live in space beyond a certain days as effect of zero gravity begins to kick-in. With artificial gravity, astronauts would be able to stay in space for longer periods. This would come in handy in case of space voyages that would require years of space travel.

Japan: Research on for artificial gravity to aid astronauts in space

Russian state news agency TASS said that at least seven people were dead in an attack carried out by Ukrainian armed forces on Monday (July 12). As per the report, the attack took place in Russian-held town of Nova Kakhovka in Ukraine's southern Kherson region.

"There are already seven dead for sure and about 60 wounded," TASS quoted Vladimir Leontyev, head of the Russia-installed Kakhovka District military-civilian administration in the Kherson region.

"There are still many people under the rubble - the injured are being taken to the hospital, but many people are blocked in their apartments and houses," Leontyev added.

TASS said that the attack damaged buildings and also led to explosions at fertiliser warehouses in the region.

The Kremlin on Tuesday announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to Tehran on July 19 with Iran President Ebrahim Raisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The leaders will attend a Syria summit.&nbsp;

"The president's visit to Tehran is being planned for July 19," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. He said the trio would meet for peace talks on Syria.&nbsp;

The three countries have been holding talks on Syria under the so-called "Astana peace process" to end a more than 11 years on conflict in the country. Visit to Tehran will be Vladimir Putin's second visit abroad since the start of Ukraine conflict. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Putin visited Tajikistan in late June.

The Kremlin said Putin will also hold separate talks with Erdogan in Tehran, without providing more details.&nbsp;

The Turkish leader has been offering to meet Putin for months, as Ankara tries to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. &nbsp;

News of Putin's Iran visit has come just when United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has agreed to to extend a vital system for cross-border aid to war-ravaged Syria by six months.

"Russia forced the hand of everyone. Either close the mechanism or only six months. We cannot let people die," one ambassador told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The aid delivery mechanism across Turkey's border into rebel-held Syria at the Bab al-Hawa crossing is the only way United Nations assistance can reach civilians without navigating areas controlled by Syrian government forces.

The system, in place since 2014, had expired on Sunday.
