Biden administration seeks extension to decide on immunity to Mohammed bin Salman

<p>Algerian President Abdulmadjid Tebboune on Monday (July 18) hailed his country's 'strategic partnership' with Italy during a visit by Italian PM Mario Draghi. <p>Britain's Prince Harry told the UN Monday that the overturning of constitutional rights in the United States was part of "a global assault on democracy and freedom."</p>

<p>"This has been a painful year in a painful decade," the royal told delegates.</p>

<p>He cited the continuing fallout from the pandemic, climate change, disinformation and Russia's invasion of Ukraine before alluding to the Supreme Court's recent overturning of America's nationwide right to abortion.</p>

<p>"And from the horrific war in Ukraine to the rolling back of constitutional rights here in the United States, we are witnessing a global assault on democracy and freedom, the cause of Mandela's life," Harry said.</p>

<p>The royal paid tribute to Mandela, South Africa's anti-apartheid hero who spent 27 years in prison before being elected the country's first Black leader, as "not only a man of conscience" but "a man of action."</p>

<p>Harry, 37, invoked that sentiment to urge leaders to tackle climate change, as his wife Meghan Markle looked on from the chamber.</p>

<p>"As we sit here today, our world is on fire again," said the prince, adding that "historic weather events are no longer historic."</p>

<p>"More and more, they are part of our daily lives. And this crisis will only grow worse unless our leaders lead.</p>

<p>"Unless the countries represented by the seats in this hallowed hall make the decisions, the daring, transformative decisions that our world needs to save humanity," he added.</p>

<p>The three leaders are meeting on the heels of US President Joe Biden's Middle East visit during which he visited Israel and Saudi Arabia, both regional foes of Iran.</p>

<p>But the trilateral summit is ostensibly centred on Syria, as part of the so-called Astana peace process to end more than 11 years of conflict in the Arab country.</p>

<p>Iran, Turkey and Russia are involved in Syria conflict. Iran and Russia are supporting President Bashar al-Assad's regime while Turkey backs the rebel forces which are fighting against the regime.</p>

<p>Last year, Erdogan threatened to launch a new offensive in Syria against Kurdish militants. Iran has already warned that any Turkish military action in Syria could "destabilise the region".</p>

<p>This is Erdogan's first meeting with Putin since the start of conflict in Ukraine. Erdogan has for months offered to meet Putin in order to help resolve tensions over Ukraine war.</p>

<p>Turkey has launched waves of attacks on Syria since 2016, targeting Kurdish militias as well as Islamic State group jihadists and forces loyal to Assad.</p>

Within seven minutes, the slots were full. The page had crashed three days ago due to very high traffic.</p>

<p>"It was frustrating, largely because especially with Covid, you'd think that we would have more of a structured process or vaccine rollout," Aidan Baglivo, 23, told AFP. "There just wasn't really anything."</p>

<p>Number of monkeypox infections rose last week in New York, a city of more than eight million people. On Friday (July 15), number of infections reached 461 new since the start of the outbreak. On Monday last week, this number was at 223.</p>

<p>Robert, who declined to give his last name, told AFP he sat at his computer refreshing the website "like a crazy person" until he got a slot.</p>

<p>"This shouldn't be an issue because there's already a vaccine, and it (the rollout) should be... more efficient to prevent it from becoming more of an issue," said the 28-year-old. His partner and his best friend have not been able to get a vaccine yet.</p>

<p>"Every additional day where there's not more people being vaccinated is a bummer."</p>

They drew large number of people from across Sri Lanka and across ethnic divides. Minority Tamils and Muslims joined majority Sinhalese to demand ouster of Rajapaksa. It began as a two-day protest on April 9. Tens of thousands of people set up camp in front of Rajapaksa's office. Under Sri Lanka's constitution, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was automatically installed as acting president following Rajapaksa's resignation.
