Now, a study has put forth an interesting argument that DNA, the very building blocks of life, originated in outer space. The study has been published in the journal Nature Communications. The researchers have found presence of nucleobases, compounds that form the DNA, in meteorites.

The researchers examined material from three meteorites. One of them fell to Earth in the year 1950. It fell near the town of Murray in Kentucky, USA. The second meteorite they studied fell in 1969 near Murchison in Australia’s Victoria State. The third one fell in 2000 in Canada’s British Columbia province.

“There is still much to learn about the chemical steps that led to the origin of life on Earth — the first self-replicating system. This research certainly adds to the list of chemical compounds that would have been present in the early Earth’s prebiotic (existing before the emergence of life) soup,” Danny Glavin of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight and co-author of the study told Reuters.

The findings in this study have&nbsp;reinforced the argument that life’s building blocks are extra-terrestrial in origin.

A recent study from the University of California, Riverside (UCR) throws light on the reason why Jupiter does not have Saturn-like rings. Findings of this study were reported in the journal Planetary Science.

UCR astrophysicist Stephen Kane led the study along with his student. Together, they ran a simulation. Into the simulation, they fed info about orbits of Jupiter's four moons and the orbit of the planet itself. They also fed information about how much time it takes to form rings around the planet.

Kane found that the reason why Jupiter could not form Saturn-like moon was its moons. Jupiter has four main moons that were discovered by Galileo.

We found that the Galilean moons of Jupiter, one of which is the largest moon in our solar system, would very quickly destroy any large rings that might form," Kane said.

So based on this research, it can be said that Jupiter did not have Saturn-like rings even in its past.

The state-owned PSU bank has become the seventh largest company in the overall market-cap ranking of listed companies on the BSE. LIC slipped to number eight in the list with a market cap of Rs 4.38 trillion, the BSE data showed.

In past one month, SBI stock has rallied by more than 17 per cent. During the same time period, LIC's stock has gained 4 per cent. BSE Sensex has been up by 7.6 per cent during the same period.

In fact, in last one week SBI has gained almost 5 per cent. There was a decline of 4 per cent in LIC's share price.

Since its listing on May 17, 2022, LIC has lost around 1.15 lakh crore market cap. But during the same period SBI's market cap got a filip of Rs 36,367 crore, as per BSE data.

SBI becomes India's most valuable listed PSU

Former PM Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected to be Sri Lanka’s president by country’s parliament on July 20. He will succeed former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa who fled the country amid intense civil unrest after a severe economic crisis in the island nation. About a hundred people protested outside the Presidential Secretariat as Sri Lankan lawmakers voted to choose the president. 
 
The protesters who had demanded Rajapaksa’s ouster had wanted Wickremesinghe gone too as he is widely viewed as an ally of the Rajapaksas. 
 
Sri Lanka is currently facing an unprecedented economic crisis that has resulted in acute shortage of fuel, food and medicines. The angry citizens have been protesting for months. Earlier in July, they occupied presidential secretariat along with president’s official residence. This forced former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa to flee the country. He flew first to Maldives and then to Singapore and only then tendered his resignation. 
 
Protesters had also stormed Wickremesinghe’s private house and office. He was prime minister then. After Rajapaksa’s resignation, Wickremesinghe had become acting president. After his election by the parliament, he will now serve remainder of Rajapaksa’s tenure. 
 
During the election, Wickremesinghe was backed by Rajapaksa’s SLPP party, still the largest party in parliament. He is also seen as a proxy for the former leader. He has now vowed to crack down on the lawbreakers. 
 
Hundreds of heavily armed troops and police stood guard outside the parliament, but there were no signs of demonstrators.

Sri Lankans protest outside secretariat as parliament elects Wickremesinghe as prez

A police official in western Indian state of Gujarat was mowed down by a truck he was trying stop on Wednesday (July 20) morning. The police official was on vehicle-checking duty. The horrific incident took place on a highway near Borsad town in Gujarat's Anand district. This incident marked third such case in India in last two days.

A speeding container truck hit constable Karansinh Raj (40) at 1 am. A grievously injured Raj was taken to the hospital but he died within hours.

"The constable was grievously injured. He was taken to a hospital where he died around 11.30 am," said deputy Superintendent of Police DH Desai.&nbsp;

The driver of the truck left the vehicle at the spot and ran away. The official said that efforts were on to nab him. The truck was not found to be carrying any suspicious cargo.

Constable Raj was attached to the Borsad town police station and carrying out vehicle checking at the time of the incident. When he tried to wave down the container truck, it did not stop.&nbsp;

"The constable and a Gram Rakshak Dal jawan accompanying him chased the truck for a few kilometres in a private vehicle and overtook it," Desai said.&nbsp;

"Raj got down and signalled the truck driver to stop. Instead of stopping, the truck ran over him," Desai said. The truck driver has been identified.

The incident took place a day after a deputy superintendent of police investigating illegal stone-mining was killed when a truck he was trying to stop ran over him in Haryana's Nuh district. On Wednesday, a woman police official engaged in vehicle-checking drive near the Jharkhand capital Ranchi was mowed down by a pickup van allegedly involved in cattle smuggling.

India: On-duty cop mowed down by truck he tried to stop

In a plot straight out of a movie, a former Mexican beauty queen and her Romanian-Dutch accomplice were arrested in Croatia after a nine-month chase across Europe for stealing bottles of exquisite wine worth USD 1.7 million from a famous hotel-restaurant in Spain. One of the wine bottles was from 19th century.&nbsp; 
In a statement, Spanish national police said that 45 wine bottles worth a total of 1.65 million euros, including one ‘unique’ 19th-century vintage worth 310,000 euros, were spirited out in a meticulously planned theft from the cellars of the famous hotel-restaurant El Atrio in the western city of Caceres, on October 27, 2021. 
The 29-year-old Mexican woman, who has competed in a beauty pageant as per Spanish media, distracted waiters of El Atrio, a Michelin-starred restaurant, while her 47-year-old male accomplice entered the wine cellar using a master key and stole the wine bottles worth 1.7 million dollars. 
The next day, hotel CCTV captured the pair, who had checked in with false Swiss identity documents, checking out at 5.30 a.m. and leaving on foot with no forensic trace of their presence left at the hotel, it said, leading police to initially believe an organised gang was behind the heist. 
The police statement said that the pair had visited the hotel before and had, like many customers, been given a tour of the wine cellar.&nbsp; 
Among the stolen wine was a bottle of prestigious French Bordeaux Chateau d’Yquem from 1806, which had an “incalculable” value, said sommelier Jose Polo, a co-owner of El Atrio. 
“That bottle was part of my personal history, almost part of me, of the history of Atrio, but also of Caceres, of its citizens, of wine lovers all over the world,” Polo said in a letter to local media quoted by Spanish daily El Pais. 
The two suspects left Spain within days and were pursued for months across Europe before being identified by Croatian border guards as they crossed from Montenegro, police said.

“There is no plan like this in other countries' space development plans. Our plan represents important technologies crucial to ensuring human beings will be able to move to space in the future,” said Yosuke Yamashiki, director of the SIC Human Spaceology Center of Kyoto University in a press conference earlier this month.

“As the idea of living in space becomes more realistic, the problem with the low gravity, which I intuitively became aware of when I was a child, is an issue we must overcome. We are committed to achieving the plan so it will be useful for human beings,” said Takuya Ono, a project associate professor with the Center and a senior researcher at Kajima.

Researchers said that the project is expected to be completed by 2050.

What is gravitational lensing?

A large celestial body having huge amount of mass, a galaxy for example, has an effect on the spacetime fabric around it. The massive gravity ‘bends’ the fabric of the space. This is called gravitational lensing. Due to this bending, some rays of light emanating from the same object cause the lensing (or an object placed behind the object causing the lensing) travel along the bent space-time fabric. This forms a mirror image of, either the same object or the object behind it. 
In this case, the mirror-image is of the same galaxy. 
Another feature of such a lensing is that it magnifies the image of the object. This makes it&nbsp;easier for us to study the celestial body in detail.

Hubble telescope clicks galaxy forming its own mirror image in space

China has fined ride-hailing giant Didi more than 8 billion yuan ($1.2 billion), regulators announced Thursday, concluding a year-long investigation into alleged data security violations.

Didi has been one of the highest-profile targets of a widespread crackdown on China's tech firms, which saw years of runaway growth and the emergence of supersized monopolies.

The clampdown launched in 2021 wiped billions of dollars off the value of Chinese tech companies. Some were targeted over monopolistic behaviour while others -- such as Didi -- for cyber and national security concerns.

The probe found "conclusive evidence" that Didi had committed violations of an "egregious nature", the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said in a statement.

It accused Didi of illegally storing the ID information of more than 57 million drivers in plain text instead of a more secure format.

The regulator said the firm also analysed passenger details without their knowledge -- including photos on their mobile phones and facial recognition data.

"Didi's illegal operations have brought serious security risks to the security of the country's key information infrastructure and data security," CAC said.

"Even when regulatory authorities ordered corrections, comprehensive and in-depth corrections were not carried out."

Didi's violations took place over seven years starting June 2015, according to the regulator.

CAC also accused Didi of unspecified national security violations in its data processing activities.

The firm was also found to have violated China's Cybersecurity Law, Data Protection Law and Personal Information Protection Law –- a landmark code introduced last year that is modelled on the European Union's GDPR legislation.

The fine amounts to more than four percent of Didi's $27.3 billion total revenue last year.

"We sincerely accept this decision (and will) resolutely obey it," the company said in a statement on social media.

"We will take this as a warning... (and) further strengthen the construction of network security and data security."

This was the largest fine imposed by Chinese authorities since e-commerce behemoth Alibaba was ordered to pay around $2.75 billion in April 2021 for anti-competitive practices.

Didi got into hot water in June last year after it pressed ahead with an initial public offering in the United States, reportedly against Beijing's wishes.

Days after it raised $4.4 billion in New York, Chinese authorities launched their cybersecurity probe, sending Didi shares plunging. 
Since then, Didi's app has been removed from Chinese stores and it has been unable to register new users.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that the fine would pave the way for Didi to list in Hong Kong and register new users.

China's tech crackdown has eased this year as it grapples with the economic fallout from its zero-Covid strategy, with the country struggling in its pursuit of 5.5 percent GDP growth.

In May, Premier Li Keqiang urged support for tech companies to list both domestically and abroad.

But there is still a strict regulatory environment: President Xi Jinping last month called for stronger oversight and better security in the financial tech arena.

Since the Didi investigation was launched in July last year, overseas IPOs from big Chinese firms have all but dried up.

Beijing now requires internet firms with more than one million users to undergo a data security review before listing overseas, partly for national security reasons as US-China tech competition heats up.

"We need to keep a close eye on the infection situation, including the issue of access to medical services, with the highest vigilance," Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a regular news conference.

New COVID-19 infections nationwide were at their highest ever, he added.

Despite the surge, officials, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, have not called for new coronavirus curbs. Nearly all Japanese still wear masks indoors, and many use them outside as well, while most stores require them.

Tokyo residents said the surge was worrying.

"I think it's really shocking that it's more than 30,000," said Ai Okamura, a 30-year-old office worker. "Because I live with my grandmother, it makes me feel much more cautious."

Others said they felt people had relaxed their vigilance in recent months as infections fell.

"Maybe since spring, everyone has calmed down and gone back to normal," said systems engineer Shimichi Koyama, aged 55.

"So it was predictable to a certain extent," he said, referring to the new surge.

Lal Bahadur Shastri had travelled to Taskent, then part of Soviet Russia in 1965. However, a day after signing Tashkent peace treaty to end 1965 Indo-Pakistan war he passed away. There are many conspiracy theories surrounding his death.

The matter came into light again after Robert Crowley, second-in-command of CIA's Directorate of Operations (in-charge of covert operations) said that Shastri was murdered by the agency. His statment has been mentioned in a book titled 'Conversation With the Crow' by Gregory Douglas.

Crowley also said that Indian nuclear scientist Dr Homi Bhabha was also killed by the intelligence agency. Bhabha died in a plane crash in the Alps in the year 1966.

Every Indian wants an answer to this question.
