A drone lifeguard has saved a life of a drowing 14-year-old boy in Valencia, Spain. As the boy struggled against powerful waves off the beach, the drone dropped a lifejacket with the help of which the boy was able to stay afloat till a physical lifeguard team arrived at the scene.

"When we arrived what we saw was a kid that was in very bad shape, with almost no energy to keep floating, so I sent over the life vest," Miguel Angel Pedrero, drone pilot for General Drones, the firm that supplies the technology, told Reuters.

"Because of the heavy waves it was a complicated manoeuvre, but we finally managed to give him the vest and he could float until the lifeguards reached him by jet ski."

General Drones is a Valencia-based company. It started supporting Spanish lifeguard staff in 2017 in Sagunto, a town just north of Valencia. Now, it has more than 30 pilots and their drones working with the lifeguards at 22 beaches across Spain. The teams provide rapid reaction support during moments before lifeguards can phtsically reach the person who is drowning.

"These extra seconds are vital in some cases and also allows the rescue teams to approach the person more calmly and cautiously," Pedrero added.

The 14-year-old boy has not been identified. After his rescue, the boy was sent to local hospital. He was provided oxygen in the ambulance. The boy was sent home after 24 hours

According to numbers with Royal Spanish Lifesaving and Rescue Federation, 140 people died due to drowning in first six months of this year alone. The number is 55 per cent more than that during the same period last year.

"According to the information we have there is no technical reason for a reduction of deliveries," a German economy ministry spokeswoman told AFP.

German group Siemens energy has been charged with maintenance of the turbine. Siemens said in a statement to AFP that there was "no link between the turbine and the gas cuts that have been implemented or announced".

Latest step from Gazprom has come after restoration of gas supply to Europe via Nord Stream last week. The supply was restored after 10 days of maintenace.

Germany is heavily dependent on Russian gas. It has accused Moscow of using gas as a weapon to exert political pressure. Other countries in the West have also alleged that Russia is trying to shoot back after economic sanctions were imposed on it in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.

Gazprom cut flows to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline under the Baltic Sea in recent weeks, blaming the absence of a Siemens gas turbine that was undergoing repairs in Canada.

Earlier Monday, Gazprom said it had received paperwork related to the delayed delivery of the turbine but pointed out a number of issues remained, including those relating to EU and UK sanctions.

Gazprom to cut down gas deliveries through Nord Stream

The US on Tuesday (July 26) held China responsible for increased "provocations" in South China Sea againt rival claimants.

"There is a clear and upward trend of PRC provocations against South China Sea claimants and other states lawfully operating in the region,” Jung Pak, deputy assistant secretary for East Asia at the State Department, told a US think tank event, referring to the People's Republic of China.

China claims the entirety of South China Sea citing ancient claims. It is often at odds with smaller countries in the region over the issue.

Jung Pak said that China's aircrafts had increasingly carried out unsafe intercepts of Australian aircraft in international airspace above South China Sea. She also stated that China had also challenged marine research and exploration activities within Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Philippines.&nbsp;

US President Joe Biden is anticipated to speak with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping this week. It is expected that the conversation will focus on ways &nbsp;prevent the growing US-China strategic rivalry.

Jung Pak's also came ahead of meetings of Southeast Asian foreign ministers and partners, including the United States, next week in Cambodia.

Pak said Washington had a "very complicated relationship with Beijing" was not trying to counter everything it was doing in Southeast Asia and the rest of the developing world.

US accuses China of increased 'provocations' in South China Sea

Russia is planning to hold big military exercise in the east thousands of miles away from where war in Ukraine is raging. The military exercise is planned for next month. The 'Vostok' exercises are slated to take place from August 30 to September 5.

They appear intended to send a message that Russia, despite the costly five-month war in Ukraine, remains focused on the defence of its entire territory and capable in military terms of sustaining "business as usual".

Russian military has emphasised in a statement that its capacity to hold drills remains unaffected. The statement said that no training activity had been cancelled and all necessary personnel, equipment and weapons will be supplied for the exercise.

"We draw your attention to the fact that only a part of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is involved in the special military operation (in Ukraine), the number of which is quite sufficient to fulfil all the tasks set by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief," the statement said.

Some foreign media were spreading false information about "some kind of alleged mobilisation activities", it added.

After its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia has suffered heavy losses and it progress has been slow. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has not ordered mobilisation of reserves. The reserves are estimated to include 2 million people.

CIA Director William Burns has said that about 15,000 Russian troops had been killed in Ukraine conflict. This is as many deaths as the Soviet army suffered during its decade-long occupation of Afghanistan in late seventies and eighties.

The upcoming military exercises have been planned to take place in the eastern military district. This includes part of Siberia. Headquarters of the eastern military district are in Khabarovsk, near the Chinese border.

A fossil of 550 million-year-old fossil, identified by scientists as 'earliest known animal predator' has been named after British naturalist and TV presenter Sir David Attenborough. The fossil was found in Charnwood Forest, near Leicester in northern England. The specimen has been named Auroralumina attenboroughii. The first part of the name is Latin for 'dawn lantern'. The fossil is from a trove found in 2007.

Phil Wilby from the British Geological Survey had visited Charnwoord forest in 2007 along with a group of palaeontologists. They were examining a site containing more than 1000 forests. To capture impression of the specimen of Auroralumina attenboroughii, the scientists took rubber mould of the rock surface.

They have determined the age of the fossil using radioactive minerals from the surrounding rock. The fossil belongs to the Ediacaran period

The animal is related to the cnidaria group, which includes sea anemones, jellyfish and corals, Wilby said, pushing the known existence of that group back by 20 million years.

"For the first time we're able to say at 560 million years ago there was a group of animals that looks just like modern animals that had skeletons, that were predators and that were colonial - there were lots of them living together," Wilby told BBC News on Monday (July 25).

"We know that the animal had a stalk and a cup and on top of that, or within that cup, was a polyp very much like a sea anemone with lots of little tentacles that were used to catch food."

“Video games are played by the overwhelming majority of our youth more than three hours every week, but the beneficial effects on decision-making abilities and the brain are not exactly known,” said lead researcher Mukesh Dhamala, associate professor in Georgia State’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and the university’s Neuroscience Institute. He was quoted by SciTechDaily.

“Our work provides some answers on that,” Dhamala said. “Video game playing can effectively be used for training — for example, decision-making efficiency training and therapeutic interventions — once the relevant brain networks are identified.”

The research was carried out by Georgia State University in the US. Tom Jordan, the lead author of the project who was advised by Dhamala, had a personal story to share.

Jordan had low vision in one of his eyes in his childhood. He was advised by doctors to play video games with a blindfold on stronger eye. The vision in his weaker eye improved.

During the research, researchers chose 28 college students who were video game players and 19 who did not.

Using FMRI machine, brain activity of subjects was monitored while they played a simple test game. It was found that gamers were quicker in their responses and more accurate.

Video gamers have better decision-making skills, says study

Rajya Sabha on Tuesday saw uproar by the Opposition after the suspension of its 19 members for the entire week for repeatedly disrupting proceedings, with the penalised MPs refusing to leave the House.

There were four adjournments till 3:40 pm as the Opposition refused to relent, and later the House was adjourned for the day, without transacting much business.

The opposition MPs, who have been stalling the proceedings since the start of the Monsoon session on July 18 to press for immediate discussion on price rise and the levy of the GST on daily essentials, were suspended as they did not heed Deputy Chairman Harvansh's repeated pleas to leave the well of the House and go back to their seats.

Four Congress MPs - Manickam Tagore, TN Prathapan, Jothimani and Ramya Haridas - had been suspended on Monday for disrupting proceedings, deepening the standoff between the Opposition and the government, which is maintaining that it is ready to hold the discussion once Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recovers from COVID-19.

On Tuesday, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan moved a motion to suspend 10 MPs from the sitting of the House for the remainder of the week for their "misconduct" by showing "utter disregard to the House and authority of the chair".

But when Harivansh put the motion to vote, he read out the names of 19 members.

The motion was carried by a voice vote. When some opposition MPs demanded a division of votes, the chair said he would do so if the members returned to their seats and the House was brought to order.

With the MPs refusing to budge, he said it seems they are not interested in the division and declared that the motion has been adopted.

The suspended MPs refused to leave, squatting on the floor of the House, leading to three adjournments -- first for 15 minutes by Harivansh, then for an hour and finally, for the day by Bhubaneswar Kalita, who was in the chair.

While seven of the suspended MPs belonged to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), six were from the DMK, three from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), two from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and one from the Communist Party of India (CPI).

Sushmita Dev, Mausam Noor, Shanta Chhetri, Dola Sen, Santanu Sen, Abir Ranjan Biswas and Nadimul Haque of the TMC were suspended.

DMK's M Mohamed Abdulla, Kanimozhi NVN Somu, M Shanmugam, S Kalyanasundaram, R Girirajan and N R Elango were also suspended. 
B Lingaiah Yadav, Ravichandra Vaddiraju and Damodar Rao Divakonda (TRS), V Sivadasan and A A Rahim (CPI-M) and Santhosh Kumar (CPI) were the other MPs who were suspended.

Earlier in the day, while the proceedings were adjourned during the Zero Hour without a single issue being taken up, Harivansh conducted the Question Hour in the midst of slogan-shouting by the opposition MPs from the Well.

This is the highest number of MPs suspended in one go. Earlier, 12 opposition members were suspended in November last year, as some of them had climbed on the table, flung papers and damaged property.

As the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha resumed after the suspension of nineteen MPs, opposition members continued shouting slogans from the well ignoring the pleas of Bhubaneswar Kalita, who was in the chair.

Kalita took the names of all nineteen suspended members and asked them again to go out of the House and others to return to their respective seats.

"I request the suspended members to withdraw from the House, and whose names are not announced they should go to their seats and allow the house to function," he said.

Kalita said that rules were followed in the suspension of the members.

However, the members, who had trooped to the well of the House, kept shouting slogans.

Meanwhile AAP Member Sanjay Singh hurled pieces of paper towards the chair.

Reacting to this, Kalita, who was on the chair, said, "This is too much".

Kalita requested the members to return to their seats to initiate the listed business.

The one-day walkout has been called by Germany's powerful Verdi union. The airline said in a statement on Tuesday that the strike is likely to have a "massive impact"

The cancellation of flights is likely to affect around 134,000 passengers with more than 1000 flights getting cancelled.

"Lufthansa will have to call off almost the entire flight programme at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich for Wednesday," the group said, adding that a knock-on effect on some flights scheduled for Thursday and Friday could not be ruled out.

The strike is scheduled to last from 0145 GMT on Wednesday to 0400 GMT on Thursday. The strike has been called to demand higher pay rise than the one offered by Lufthansa.

Cancellation of flights is sure to create disturbance in summer air travel across Europe. Travel volume has increased in Europe due to relaxation of Covid rules.

The Verdi union, representing around 20,000 Lufthansa ground staff, is seeking a 9.5-percent pay rise, or at least 350 euros ($360) per month. It also wants a minimum hourly wage of 13 euros.

The union has said management's offer so far "does not come close to compensating for inflation" which stood at 7.6 percent in Germany last month.

Due to our Earth-centric thoughts, its hard to imagine that the largest canyon in the Solar System is not on Earth. Sorry Grand Canyon but a canyon system on Mars takes the cake here. And European Space Agency has clicked a picture of it.

Valles Marineris, the canyon system on Mars, is longer, wider and deepr than Grand Canyon. It is 4000 kilometres long, 200 kilometre wide and upto 7 km deep. These dimensions are much greater than the Grand Canyon. To put things in Indian perspective, the length of Valles Marineris is greater than the distance between Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

The blackened portion in the Tithonium Chasma is black sand. Scientists think that the sand must have come from Tharsis volcanic region.

'Grand Canyon on Mars': ESA clicks Martian feature that's bigger than the original thing

Now, because of the research carried out in a university in Mexico, we now know how to determine whether there are planets revolving around dead binary stars. Dr. Carlos Chavez, from the Universidad Autónoma De Nuevo León in Mexico is the lead author of this study.

The focus of this study was Cataclysmic Variables (CVs), type of binary stars which are so close to each other that the bigger star draws material from the smaller one while they revolve around each other.

In CVs, the bigger star (primary) is generally a white dwarf while the smaller star (donor) is a red dwarf. primary star draws material from the donor star.

As the the material is drawn, it forms a heated disc around the stars called 'accretion disc'.

In such a binary star system, there is point of gravitational equillibrium. This is called Lagrangian Point.

If a planet is present in this star system, it causes oscillations in the Lagrangian Point. This in turn, causes changes in the luminosity of the star system. Researchers say that by detecting changes in luminosity, it can be determined if a planet is present or not.

The research has been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Dogs never cease to surprise us. They seem to read our emotions and be empathetic. Thousands of years with humankind may have made them our best friends, but we have just begun to understand them. A research has now said that dogs may be able to 'see' through their powerful sense of smell.

That dogs sense of smell is much superior to humans is a known fact. Their nose has more than 220 million odour-detecting cels, more than four times than those in humans. This is pretty much known.&nbsp;

But the new research suggests that smell may form much greater part in dog's perception of its surroundings than thought before.

The researchers scanned brains of 23 domestic dogs with the help of a special MRI. They found that connections between regions of the brain that processed smell and vision were especially strong.&nbsp;

"We've never seen this connection between the nose and the occipital lobe, functionally the visual cortex in dogs, in any species," Cornell University neuroimaging researcher Pip Johnson explains. He was quoted by Cornell Chronicle

"It was really consistent. And size-wise, these tracts were really dramatic compared to what is described in the human olfactory system, more like what you'd see in our visual systems."

What this means is that dogs form spatial awareness, a mental picture of surrounding more using their sense of smell like we do using vision.

This perhaps explains why even blind dogs can play a game of fetch.

The research has been published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

The main players, Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Adani group are readying their war chests to boost their market share. The four companies have in total, submitted USD 2.68 billion in earnest money deposit (EMD).

Reliance Jio Infocomm has submitted EMD of USD 1.75 billion while Bharti Airtel has put in USD 6.8 million In the 2021 auctions for 4G spectrum, Reliance Jio used 77.9 per cent of their earnest money deposit while Airtel used 87.7 per cent.

5G networks will be 10 times faster than 4G and 30 times faster than 3G in India. The 5G auction will entail 72 GHz of the spectrum. The auction will conclude by July-end and the rollout is expected by September this year.

The Department of Telecom has released a notice inviting applications (NIA) for the auction of spectrum in 600, 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2500, 3300 MHz and 26GHz bands.

The telecom companies are allowed to surrender spectrum after 10 years from the date of acquisition. In a big relief to telecom companies last month, India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) scrapped 3 per cent floor rate on spectrum usage charges (SUC).

5G in India will empower tech companies, enterprises and ecosystem players to build private networks and bring next-generation digital transformation which is critical for the country to achieve the goal of becoming a $1 trillion digital economy, according to industry leaders and experts.

"As we look to cement India`s position as a global hub for manufacturing, supply chain and R&amp;D, as well as one of the leading digital economies across the world, the advancement of enterprises through dedicated captive private 5G networks will help gain efficiencies in all vital industry verticals," said TV Ramachandran, president, Broadband India Forum.
