The ATMIS has been helping Somalia in its war against the Al Shabaab. On Tuesday, ten people were killed in an attack in the capital city of Mogadishu claimed by the Al-Shabaab. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, a witness said the attack began with a car bomb blast followed by a gunfight that went on for hours at a house where several lawmakers were believed to be staying.

A suicide bomber first detonated a car outside the house and then Al Shabaab militants stormed in while firing guns. The gunfight between the group and security forces lasted for about eight hours. In a statement, Somalia's information ministry said that four soldiers and three civilians were injured before the fighting ended.

Somalia: Helicopter crashes in Lower Shabelle region, killing 3, injuring 8

Three alumni of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) — Anurag Meena, Nikunj Malpani, and Pratik Lodha — have developed a smartphone-based health test kit using a urine sample that gives results in 30 seconds. The three alumni are founders of the health startup NeoDocs.

According to a report by the news agency PTI, a person has to dip a card supplied in the test kit in urine for a second, click a photo of it on his/her phone using the NeoDocs app. “The photo gets uploaded on our cloud server, where an algorithm uses computer vision to scan the card and gives results within 30 seconds,” Manasvi Shah, the strategic partnerships manager of the startup, said.

Nashik Zilla Parishad health officer Dr Harshal Nehete told PTI that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NeoDocs for using these instant test kits at their public health centres (PHCs) in Trimbak taluka.

“We have been using these instant tests at seven of our PHCs for antenatal care of mothers. We are also using their UTI (urinary tract infection) test kits and wellness kits,” Dr Nehete said.

NeoDocs presented the test kit during an exhibition at the recently held Indian Science Congress in Nagpur. Nikunj Malpani, one of the startup founders, said that it was during the Covid lockdown that they realised the importance of the quantification of health and the value of diagnostics.

Malpani said they began their venture with five basic instant urine test kits catering to their customers in a personalised manner. Besides the test kit, NeoDocs is manufacturing chronic kidney disease and elderly test kits, and there is also a maternity care kit for women to be used throughout pregnancy, he added.

Anurag Meena, meanwhile, said these test kits will help bring healthcare to every doorstep and reduce the overall cost of testing significantly, no matter the socio-economic background. And according to Pratik Lodha, the startup is further working on researching and developing instant test kits for various human bio-fluids such as blood, vaginal discharge, semen, etc.

Top Chinese banker Bao Fan, who was earlier reported to have disappeared, is assisting Chinese investigators, his company China Renaissance Holdings Ltd said in a stock filing on Sunday (February 26). “The board has become aware that Mr Bao is currently cooperating in an investigation being carried out by certain authorities in the People’s Republic of China,” Bao's company said, the news agency Bloomberg reported.

China Renaissance Holdings Ltd further said that its business and operations were continuing normally and that it would “cooperate and assist with any lawful request” from the relevant Chinese authorities, if and when made.

Bao Fan's disappearance almost 10 days back, sent chills down China's finance industry. On February 17, his company's stock slid by 50% in early Hong Kong trading to hit a low of $0.64 (around HK$5), wiping off $356.7 million (HK$2.8 billion) in market value.

Before Fan, Seazen Group Ltd vice-chairman Qu Dejun was reported to have been unreachable. It was revealed that Dejun was cooperating with authorities concerning an investigation into the Dalian Wanda Group, where he previously worked.

For years, high-profile Chinese executives have gone missing with little explanation amid an anti-corruption campaign spearheaded by President Xi Jinping. A report by the news agency Reuters on Sunday said that in 2015 alone, at least five executives became unreachable without prior notice to their companies.

These included billionaire Guo Guangchang, the chairman of the Fosun Group. Guangchang had vanished from public view in connection with a probe by authorities, before re-emerging days later. His disappearance seemed to violate the trust between the government and top Chinese business leaders whose hard work fuelled China to become the world's second-largest economy.

Some of the major tycoons targeted under Xi Jinping's rule recently include Jack Ma, Xiao Jianhua and Mao Xiaofeng.

Four soldiers in Yemen were killed in clashes with Huthi rebels in the country's north on Saturday (February 25) evening. A military official, who did not wish to be identified, said the soldiers were killed while confronting rebels in the south of Harib district in Marib province, the news agency AFP reported on Sunday. Several other soldiers were injured in the fighting that ended hours after the initial attack on government positions in Harib, the official added.

It is not yet known how many Huthi rebels were killed. Flare-ups between the Yemeni forces and Huthi rebels are relatively common in the government's last northern stronghold.

A Saudi-led military coalition intervened in 2015 to back the government after Huthis seized control of the capital city of Sanaa and large swathes of Yemen, AFP reported.

The war has killed hundreds of thousands of people both directly and indirectly and triggered what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with millions of people displaced.

The clashes on Saturday come almost a month after Huthi rebels attacked Yemeni government military sites in the Lahj province on January 27. Eight people, including five rebels and three soldiers, were reported dead.

A local military official told the Xinhua news agency the rebels carried out the attack and attempted to advance militarily on the ground to capture key sites controlled by the government forces in the northern part of the province.

The crime was committed on February 18 but came to light a week later, after Krishna surrendered to the police.

The police investigation revealed that Krishna and Naveen were classmates in an intermediate college in Dilsukhnagar. During that time, Naveen was in love with a girl but they later drifted apart due to some differences. Subsequently, the girl grew close to Krishna and the two had been in a relationship for some time. Naveen, however, allegedly started making calls and texting the girl and she told Krishna about this.

The accused then hatched a plan to kill his friend. On February 17, Krishna invited Naveen for a get-together at his residence in Dilsukhnagar. Later, Krishna offered to drop Naveen at his college hostel in Nalgonda. En route, the accused consumed liquor and purchased a knife.

And in the early hours of February 18, Krishna strangled Naveen to death with a rope after an argument broke out between the two. A police officer told IANS that Krishna beheaded Naveen, ripped out his heart and chopped off his private parts, fingers and threw them aside. He has been arrested on charges of murder and wiping out evidence.

A serial hacker suspected of stealing tens of thousands of psychotherapy patient records was extradited to Finland on Saturday (February 25), after he was arrested in France. Twenty-five-year-old Julius Kivimaki was arrested in Paris on February 3, on the run from a European arrest warrant issued by the Finnish Police in October last year, the news agency AFP reported. Last week, French authorities had given the green light for Kivimaki's extradition.

Kivimaki's lawyer Peter Jaari told AFP that the hacker was now being held in Vantaa prison near Helsinki. Meanwhile, Marko Leponen of the National Bureau of Investigation, who is heading the probe said the aim was to interview Kivimaki as soon as possible.

The probe is related to the 2018 and 2019 hacking of the Finnish company Vastaamo, which manages dozens of psychotherapy centres across Finland. AFP reported that in the cyberattack, confidential treatment records of psychotherapy patients in Finland were stolen and some leaked online.

Many patients reported receiving emails with a demand for $236 (200 euros) in bitcoin to prevent the contents of their discussions with therapists from being made public. The Finnish police estimated that there were over 30,000 victims whose data was leaked.

After the leak was made public in October 2020, the government announced a crisis meeting over the unprecedented data breach, as distressed psychotherapy patients flooded mental health charities.

Julius Kivimaki has already been convicted of various counts of cybercrime, fraud, and money laundering. He was a member of a cybercriminal group called the Lizard Squad.

According to a report by cybernews earlier this month, the Lizard Squad was most active in 2014 and was connected with DDoS attacks on PlayStation and Xbox online gaming services. The group was also connected with a bomb threat against an aircraft carrying then Sony Online Entertainment’s President John Smedley.

Google, which recently laid off thousands of employees globally, is now laying off the robots that cleaned cafeterias at its headquarters. A report by Wired recently said that Alphabet's "Everyday Robots" project — a unit under Google's experimental X laboratories — has been shut down by Google's chief executive officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai.

More than 100 wheeled one-armed robots that were trained by the project to clean cafeterias, separate trash and recycling and open doors, are being laid off. “Everyday Robots will no longer be a separate project within Alphabet,” Denise Gamboa, director of marketing and communications for the project, said, reported Wired.

Everyday Robots had emerged from the rubble of at least eight robotic acquisitions by Google 10 years back. More than 200 people were employed and robotics experts estimated that the robots likely cost thousands of dollars, which was expensive for Alphabet.

“It’s unfortunate to see it shut down,” the former employee said, adding robots could do meaningful work in a general way. "I don't think it’s a sign of a lack of progress. With the right focus, in five years you could have a meaningful product in the market."

For the last few years, Alphabet has been developing an integrated hardware and software system for learning, including the transfer of knowledge from the virtual to the actual world. The robots slowly gained a greater grasp of the world around them and became more adept at executing ordinary activities, using a combination of machine learning techniques like reinforcement learning, collaborative learning, and learning from demonstration.

With the robot division now shut down, some of its technology could be used for other divisions.

US: Police discover crypto mining operation in school crawl space in Massachusetts

A new study has said that fish caught in two rivers of Michigan and tested for PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) contained the chemicals, and at levels that present a health risk for anyone eating them. According to the study done by the Ecology Center, Friends of the Rogue, and the Huron River Watershed Council, researchers collected more than 100 fish from 15 sites along the Huron and Rouge rivers.

A report by the Guardian on Friday (February 24) said that PFAS are a class of 12,000 compounds that are used to make products resistant to water, stains and heat. They are known as "forever chemicals" as they do not naturally break down and have been linked to serious health problems in humans such as cancer, high cholesterol, and liver and kidney disease.

The study said that researchers tested for 40 different PFAS chemicals from a variety of species including bluegill, pumpkinseed, rock bass, smallmouth bass, catfish, and river chub.

"In the case of the Huron River, a chrome plating facility that manufactures shiny coatings on car parts and other items discharged PFAS chemicals into the river. Four years later, the fish consumption advisory still stands in many parts of the river," the study said.

"During the project, the state of Michigan issued a fish consumption advisory for parts of the Rouge River after additional samples showed elevated levels in certain fish. Even with the Rouge’s long history of industry and pollution, there have always been anglers catching fish on the Rouge," it added.

The levels found in fish sampled from these rivers ranged from about 11,000 parts per trillion (ppt) to 180,000 ppt, and tests revealed 14 different kinds of PFAS compounds.

The results of the study showed that PFAs are there in every tested fish. "Fourteen different PFAS chemicals were detected in the study. Each fish tested had at least one of the 14 chemicals in its body," the study said.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), one kind of 14 PFAS chemicals, was found in every fish tested. "PFOS accounted for 58% (Huron) and 46% (Rouge) of the PFAS content of the fish," the study said.

Erica Bloom, one of the study's co-authors with the Ecology Center, said the findings are sad, according to the Guardian report on Friday. “It just demonstrates how ubiquitous these chemicals are in the environment,” Bloom said.

She pointed out that fishing in these rivers is an important part of life. "And we’re not out here to tell people to stop fishing – but if you’re fishing, here are some things to look out for," she added.

Bloom said it is up to state regulators to protect anglers, and results highlight how agencies are failing to keep pace with new science and regulations around PFAS. She also said it is unclear why state regulators have not updated their advisories, and that fish consumption levels in Michigan should be reviewed and lowered.
