Ethnic minorities in the United Kingdom (UK) are no longer at a higher risk of death from Covid than white Britons, a report from the Guardian said on Wednesday (February 22) citing data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS). The ONS data showed that the rates of deaths involving the virus are now substantially lower for all ethnic groups than earlier in the pandemic. During the first and second Covid waves, ethnic minorities had a significantly higher virus mortality rate than white Britons.

During successive lockdowns, ethnic minorities were more likely exposed to Covid as they were more likely to be key workers or live in multi-generational households. Data showed that mortality rates were the highest for Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, black African and black Caribbean groups. By the third and fourth waves (Alpha and Delta waves), deaths came down, but ethnic disparities remained.

Speaking to the Guardian, ONS' senior statistician Vahé Nafilyan said that in the first and second waves, the differences in the mortality rates were largely due to social demographic factors, adding the main reason for these differences was differences in the risk of infection.

“The Delta wave coincided with the rollout of the vaccination campaign, where the uptake of the vaccine was much lower in some groups, such as the black Caribbean and black African groups, compared to the white British group,” He said.

The Omicron variant, meanwhile, caused less severe disease than the Delta variant. The senior statistician also told the Guardian that more and more people got immunity (from Covid) as they had been previously infected.

"So what hasn’t changed in the Omicron period is the gap in vaccination uptake. It has reduced slightly between groups, but it’s still there,” Nafilyan said. He also pointed out that further research was required to look into the level of immunity in different groups, and see whether groups with a lower vaccination rate had a higher level of infection.

Since the onset of the pandemic, the UK has registered over 24.3 million infections, 206,246 deaths and nearly 23 million recoveries. Speaking to the Guardian, Kit Yates from the University of Bath said that it was unclear what was the reason behind the latest figures about ethnic minorities.

Yates, the director of the Centre for Mathematical Biology at the university, guessed "that there were disparities in terms of exposure levels for different ethnic groups earlier on in the pandemic when we were actively trying to control transmission."

"I suspect that these have now largely dissipated given the unmitigated spread situation in which we have found ourselves for the last year or so,” Yates added. He also said that another possibility was that the impact of vaccines was diminishing.

Hong Kong authorities said late Tuesday (February 21) that they cancelled the visa of a controversial Chinese biophysicist after the initial granting of the visa raised hackles in the scientific community.

Hong Kong authorities said late Tuesday (February 21) that they cancelled the visa of a controversial Chinese biophysicist after the initial granting of the visa raised hackles in the scientific community. The biophysicist- He Jiankui was handed a prison term in 2019 for illegally experimenting on human embryos in a controversial exercise that saw twin girls born with genes he had altered to confer immunity to HIV, a report by news agency AFP said on Tuesday. He was released from jail in April 2022. Earlier on Tuesday, Jiankui said that his Hong Kong visa was approved and he was seeking collaborators to further his work on gene therapy for rare diseases. Speaking to reporters in Beijing, he said, "I am currently contacting Hong Kong's universities, scientific research organisations, and companies. If there are definite and suitable opportunities, I will consider working in Hong Kong." Speaking to AFP, Kiran Musunuru, a genetics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said that Hong Kong's initial decision to grant Jiankui a visa was "appalling". He Jiankui is a convicted criminal" and "woefully incompetent as a scientist. Experimenting on children and causing them genetic damage, as he did, is in my view a form of child abuse" Musunuru said. Later in the day, the Hong Kong government said it had voided the visa of an individual who "made false statements" in the application, adding that a criminal probe had been launched. A statement did not name Jiankui but referred to the details of his case. The statement said that future applicants under the visa scheme must declare if they had a criminal record. Citing officials, AFP reported that this requirement did not exist when the Chinese biophysicist submitted his forms. In 2018, He Jiankui, who studied at Stanford University, stunned the scientific community by announcing the birth of genetically engineered twins. A third child who had undergone gene editing was born the following year. After facing global condemnation, Jiankui was jailed in December 2019 by a Chinese court and fined $430,000 (3 million yuan). According to local media, the court said that he had been "illegally carrying out human embryo gene-editing intended for reproduction." Apart from Jiankui, two of his researchers- Zhang Renli and Qin Jinzhou were also sentenced in 2019. The court's verdict said that the trio did not obtain qualifications to work as doctors and knowingly violated China's regulations and ethical principles. Morning brief: Joe Biden says US support for Ukraine unwavering, and more

The United States (US) State Department has authorised the extradition of former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo to face charges of corruption in his home country. Toledo, 76, served as president from 2001 to 2006, and has resided in the US since the end of his presidency. He was arrested in July 2019 on charges of corruption in Peru and has been under US house arrest, a report by the news agency AFP said on Tuesday.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday (February 21), Peru's prosecutor's office said, "We have been informed that the US State Department authorized the extradition of Alejandro Toledo Manrique for the crimes of collusion and money laundering."

The office added that it was carrying out coordination with "national and foreign" authorities for "the upcoming execution of his extradition." Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of 20 years and six months.

Lima has accused Toledo of having received millions of dollars from Odebrecht- a Brazilian construction company- in exchange for public works contracts. According to local media, Toledo admitted that Odebrecht paid at least and he received part of that money but claimed he is innocent of the charges and said that a late businessman, Josef Maiman, was in charge of the business dealings.

The 76-year-old has joined the list of former Peruvian presidents facing legal proceedings or already convicted on corruption charges. The list includes Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018), Martín Vizcarra (2018-2020) and Pedro Castillo (2021-2022).

In August last year, the US Department of Justice said that it would return to Peru about $686,000 seized from Toledo. Federal prosecutors in the New York City borough of Brooklyn said Odebrecht had paid Toledo $25 million in bribes for highway construction contracts, a report by news agency Reuters said on Tuesday.

Israeli scientists have said that they cured mice of Alzheimer's using a newly developed molecule. The scientists gave an artificial molecule to 30 mice suffering from Alzheimer’s and found all of them recovered, regaining full cognitive abilities. The research, led by neuroscientists from Ben-Gurion University, was published in the Translational Neurodegeneration journal.

Speaking to the Times of Israel on Tuesday (February 21), the lead author of the research Professor Varda Shoshan-Barmatz said “We are taking a very different approach than efforts at Alzheimer’s medicines that we have seen so far.”

“Most are trying to address plaque that forms in the brain, but we are addressing dysfunction elsewhere. And we’re optimistic. Mice who had Alzheimer’s and received our molecule and then underwent tests had the same cognitive abilities as mice who’d never had Alzheimer’s,” Professor Barmatz added.

According to the Times of Israel report, the molecule appeared to have been effective without significantly reducing the amount of plaque, which Barmatz thought indicated that scientists might have been overly fixated on the plaque. Despite Alzheimer’s being linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, no drug candidates are currently focused on mitochondria.

The report said that Ben-Gurion University set out to normalise mitochondrial activity by countering the harmful effects that occur when VDAC1-a protein- is over-produced.

According to the research, to address the multiple pathways involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD), neuronal cultures and a 5 × FAD mouse model of AD were treated with VBIT-4. "We addressed multiple topics related to the disease and its molecular mechanisms using immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, q-RT-PCR, 3-D structural analysis and several behavioural tests," it added.

The research suggested that mitochondrial dysfunction with its gatekeeper VDAC1 is a promising target for AD therapeutic intervention, and VBIT-4 is a promising drug candidate for AD treatment.

The VDAC1 plays an important role in regulating the metabolic and energetic functions of mitochondria when produced in normal quantities. However, the scientists found that it is produced in huge levels in the brains of mice with Alzheimer’s, and interferes with mitochondrial activity. On Tuesday, Professor Barmatz told the Times of Israel that in the research, the team shifted the focus of Alzheimer’s treatments from the plaque to this protein, which is produced in the nerve cells around the plaque instead.

“We prevent this protein from causing cell death, as the molecule interferes with its harmful effect,” she said. Her team developed a molecule that binds to VDAC1.

“By binding to the VDAC1, it prevents it from causing neuronal cell death and other changes associated with Alzheimer’s, including neuro-inflammation and neuro-metabolic dysfunctions,” Barmatz added.

For making the molecule, her team searched scientific libraries for compounds that had qualities suggesting that it would interact with the protein and inhibit its harmful effects. They developed one of the compounds into the molecule, which is designed to prevent changes in the mitochondria. Thirty mice that were suffering from Alzheimer's were given the molecule dosed via their drinking water for five months. Also, a similar number of mice with the disease did not receive the molecule.

Professor Barmatz said on Tuesday the mice underwent various tests. She added that at the start, the mice had a loss of memory and impaired cognitive ability. However, by the end of the experiment, the ones who received the molecule had the same memory and cognitive ability as mice without Alzheimer's.

Barmatz also said, "In the mice with Alzheimer’s, there was a massive neuronal cell death. The molecule prevented neuronal cell death and thus other changes associated with Alzheimer’s, including neuroinflammation and neuro-metabolic dysfunctions."

However, by the end of the experiment, the ones who received the molecule had the same memory and cognitive ability as mice without Alzheimer's. Barmatz also said, "In the mice with Alzheimer’s, there was a massive neuronal cell death. The molecule prevented neuronal cell death and thus other changes associated with Alzheimer’s, including neuroinflammation and neuro-metabolic dysfunctions." United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit earthquake-ravaged Turkey on Sunday (February 19) to discuss how the Joe Biden administration can assist Ankara in the aftermath of the natural disaster.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit earthquake-ravaged Turkey on Sunday (February 19) to discuss how the Joe Biden administration can assist Ankara in the aftermath of the natural disaster. A report by the news agency Reuters said that Blinken will land at the Incirlik Air Base in Adana, from where he would take a helicopter tour of the earthquake-affected area. On Monday, he would hold bilateral talks with Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. Antony Blinken is also expected to hold a meeting with Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Reuters reported citing sources. Since a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey's southeast and neighbouring Syria on February 6, the United States has sent a search and rescue team to Turkey, medical supplies, concrete-breaking machinery, and additional funding of $85 million in humanitarian aid which covers both Turkey and Syria. On February 9, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) said that the additional funding supports its humanitarian partners to deliver urgently-needed aid for millions of people in Turkey and Syria. The USAID added it was providing emergency food and shelter for refugees and newly displaced people, winter supplies to help families brave the cold, critical health care services to provide trauma support and other assistance. Nordic NATO bid on agenda Apart from how Washington can help Turkey in the aftermath of the massive earthquake, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit also focuses on the stalled NATO bids of Sweden and Finland, which Ankara has so far refused to ratify. In 2022, Sweden and Finland applied to NATO after Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine, but they faced objections from Turkey. ALSO READ | Blinken warns China's Wang Yi that spy balloon incident 'must never again occur' The relations between Turkey and Sweden have been sour due to Quran burning incidents in the latter country. Last month, Turkish President Erdogan warned Stockholm not to expect support for its bid for membership into NATO. Meanwhile, the Turkish government recently indicated that it would approve only Finland's bid to join the intergovernmental military alliance On Saturday, Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen said that allowing Finland to join the alliance alone would not be enough. "There will be no transfer of F-16s if Erdogan continues to deny admission to Finland and Sweden ... He doesn't get to have Finland in and the F-16s approved and I think that's a broad sentiment," Hollen said, Reuters reported. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Sunday (February 19) called for an urgent scaling up of earthquake aid to northwest Syria as it delivered a convoy of 14 trucks laden with 1,269 tents and winter kits. "The delivery was arranged outside of the United Nations cross-border humanitarian mechanism," the MSF said, the news agency AFP reported. "An urgent increase in the volume of supplies is needed to match the scale of the humanitarian crisis," the MSF said.

The aid group said that supplies currently failed to even match the pre-earthquake volumes.

Citing data from the United Nations (UN), the MSF said that five days after the massive earthquake (on February 6), only 10 trucks had entered rebel-held areas of Syria through the Bab al-Hawa crossing from Turkey. It added that 10 days after the quake, the number of trucks that crossed the border into northwest Syria was lower than the average weekly number for 2022.

In the aftermath of the earthquake in Syria which has killed more than 5,800 people till now, activists and emergency teams in the country's northwest decried a slow UN response to the quake in rebel-held areas, contrasting it with the aid that has been delivered to government-controlled airports. Before the disaster, almost all of the crucial humanitarian aid for over four million people living in rebel-held areas was being delivered through just one crossing — Bab al-Hawa.

The United States ambassador to Israel Tom Nides said that Prime Minister Netanyahu should slow down the progress on the controversial judicial overhaul which has sparked protests for weeks.

The United States ambassador to Israel Tom Nides said that Prime Minister Netanyahu should slow down the progress on the controversial judicial overhaul which has sparked protests for weeks. Speaking to the CNN podcast "The Axe Files" on Saturday (February 18), Nides said, "We're telling the Prime Minister, as I tell my kids, pump the brakes, slow down, try to get a consensus, bring the parties together." Nides emphasised that Israel had America's support on security and at the United Nations. ALSO READ | Israeli PM Netanyahu vows action against Palestinian attackers; police seal Jerusalem attacker’s home However, the US envoy also said that Prime Minister Netanyahu's hope of forging diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia or dealing with Iran's nuclear programme was at stake. "The Prime Minister wants to do big things, okay? He tells us he wants to do big things. I said to him, to the prime minister, a hundred times, we can't spend time with things we want to work on together if your backyard's on fire," Nides said during the podcast. 'You pump the breaks': Israeli minister to US envoy Israeli PM Netanyahu did not immediately comment on Tom Nides' remarks but the country's Minister of Diaspora Affairs Amichai Chikli told the US envoy to mind his own business. Speaking to public broadcaster Ken, Chikli said "I tell the American ambassador, you pump the brakes. Mind your own business. You are not sovereign here to discuss judicial reforms. We're happy to discuss diplomatic and security matters with you but respect our democracy," the news agency Reuters reported. The protests in Israel against the government's controversial legal reforms continue. On Saturday night, tens of thousands of protesters returned to the streets to oppose the plan to overhaul the country's court system. They are against the reforms that Prime Minister Netanyahu and his allies hope to pass that would limit the Supreme Court's powers to rule against the legislature and the executive while giving lawmakers decisive powers in appointing judges. Netanyahu said the changes are needed to restore the balance between the government, the Knesset and the judiciary On Saturday, Israel's Justice Minister Yariv Levin told Channel 13 that he was determined to complete the legislation, adding "I don't think it's right to manage a country with threats and dictations from the street."
