Over one million Rohingya refugees fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar over several decades. These included 740,000 refugees who crossed the border in August 2017, when the Myanmar military launched a brutal crackdown. In 2022, the United States said that the oppression of Rohingyas in Myanmar amounted to genocide following American authorities confirming accounts of mass atrocities against civilians by the military in a systematic campaign against them.

The fire in Cox's Bazar comes a day after at least five people were killed and 25 others injured in an explosion followed by a blaze at an oxygen plant outside Chittagong. Speaking to the news agency AFP on Saturday, a police official said the blast rocked the oxygen unit of the Sheema steel re-rolling mill in the industrial town of Sitakunda at around 4:30 pm (1030 GMT), trapping "many workers" inside the plant.

Witnesses, meanwhile, said the explosion was so loud that it shook all houses in the area. The government has ordered a probe into the explosion.

Bangladesh: Massive fire in Rohingya refugee camp in Cox's Bazar

Scientists have stressed there is a need to end a colonial approach to space exploration. They have said that human beings boldly going into space should echo the guiding principle of Captain James Kirk’s Star Trek crew by resisting the urge to interfere. According to a report by The Guardian on Saturday (March 4), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has made no secret of the desire to mine the moon for metals and China is also keen to extract lunar resources.

NASA has sped up its quest to beat China with regard to mining metals on the moon, in what is being seen as a space race between Washington and Beijing.

Dr Pamela Conrad of the Carnegie Institution of Science said that the focus should shift away from seeking to exploit discoveries. “If we were willing to seize that as not just a possibility, but an imperative then oddly enough, the Star Trek series and culture becomes a prime directive for how we could explore space: seeking not to interfere," Dr Conrad said on Saturday ahead of a panel event in Washington DC.

Dr Conrad said that rather than setting out to own or take resources from space, human beings should endeavour to be “gentle explorers”. “Regardless of who or what is out there, that attitude of exploration being almost synonymous with exploitation gives one a different perspective as you approach to the task,” she said, The Guardian reported.

She added that if something that is not here on Earth is seen as a resource, just ripe to be exploited, then that perpetuates colonialism.

Another scientist Dr Hilding Neilson said that in Canada, Indigenous people had rights and responsibilities to unceded and treaty land, with the absence of a height limit.

Dr Nielson said that such people had deep connections with bodies such as the moon. “Part of that connection is inherent to the culture and the way of living and way of knowing,” the scientist said, adding any damage to these bodies was a concern.

Those working on space missions, such as NASA's ''Artemis Program", should engage with Indigenous people in advance, the scientist added. He also stressed the need to move away from the rhetoric around building colonies on the moon or other planets.

Scientists say there is a need to end colonial approach to space exploration: Report

Former British Health Secretary Matt Hancock is continuing to face criticism since the leak of WhatsApp messages shared between him and other ministers, officials at the height of the Covid pandemic. The messages, which were leaked by the Daily Telegraph, now show that Hancock wanted to announce a new virus variant to "frighten the pants off, everyone."

In 2020, Hancock and his team were discussing the looming realisation that then Prime Minister Boris Johnson's planned five-day Christmas amnesty from Covid curbs would have likely had to be scrapped, said a report published by the Mirror early Sunday (March 5). Johnson promised families they could see each other during the festive period, but the plan was scrapped on December 18.

Amid fears of a massive backlash from people, Hancock and his team were thinking about how to divert the anger. Damon Poole, his media adviser, said in the WhatsApp chat, ''Rather than doing too much forward signalling, we can roll pitch with the new strain."

Hancock replied, "We frighten the pants off everyone with the new strain." He added, "But the complication with that Brexit is taking the top line." This was an apparent reference regarding the media's coverage of the United Kingdom's (UK) exiting the European Union (EU).

These leaked messages have renewed the demand for a public inquiry into the handling of the health crisis, the Mirror report said.

UFC 285 headline event: Jon Jones (United States) is the new Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion as he defeated Ciryl Gane (France) by submission (guillotine choke) in just the first round of the fight. Jones stepped back into the octagon after three years and shocked the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) community with a phenomenal performance.

The round started with Jones landing a low left kick, but ate a kick to the groin from Gane which stopped the fight for a brief moment. The fight resumed and Jones landed a strong right hand, and then another. The American then grabs a clinch as Gane is moving, ducks under to the back, and gets a takedown. Jones holds down to this position,

He then attempts a guillotine choke and Gane taps. In the post-fight interview, Jones said, "I'm so excited. I have been working for this for a long time."

Stipe, I hope you're training. You're the greatest heavyweight of all time. And that's what I want. I want you real bad."

Jones, 35, is the former light-heavyweight champion and is regarded as one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time. Sunday's victory proved that he could be just as successful at the heavyweight division as he was in light-heavyweight.

There were concerns about whether a time off of three years would affect Jones' efficiency inside the octagon. His last fight was on February 8, 2020, in a unanimous decision over Dominick Reyes.

However, Jon Jones proved everyone wrong.

UFC 285: Jon Jones is the new heavyweight champion, defeats Ciryl Gane by submission in Round 1

Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska said on Saturday (March 4) that the country's prosecutor's office was investigating 171 cases of sexual violence committed by Russian troops. Addressing a panel discussion on sexual violence and war crimes, Zelenska said the above figures were official, speculating "we do not know how many suffer in silence, especially in the occupied territories."

"171 cases of sexual violence against Ukrainians are currently being investigated by the Prosecutor General's Office, and this figure is not limited to women, 39 men and 13 minors are among the victims. Among them is a boy. Most importantly, we know about these cases only because these people found the strength to speak. (Thanks to) their strength, the strength of their loved ones. We do not know how many suffer in silence, especially in the occupied territories," she said, the news agency Reuters reported.

"Verdicts for Russian rapes and other war crimes are needed as a precedent, so that any potential aggressor, any collective rapists in the world knows that such things will not go unpunished. And for those to whom something still seems incomprehensible, who hint towards making concessions to the aggressor. We must liberate our land from the invader not only because we want to return to universally recognised borders," she added.

The First Lady also said everybody would be held accountable for crimes they committed, and atrocities that have seen committed against the brave Ukrainians.

Olena Zelenska has previously accused Moscow of using rape as a weapon of war in her country. In November last year, she claimed that the wives of Russian servicemen encouraged them to rape Ukrainian women.

"Sexual violence is the most cruel, most animalistic way to prove mastership over someone. And for victims of this kind of violence, it is difficult to testify in war times because nobody feels safe", she said during an international conference in London, according to a report by Sky News.

The First Lady's remarks on Saturday come just days after Kyiv's human rights commissioner accused Russians of kidnapping Ukrainian children and selling them for sex. "Telegram channels revealed that Russians are kidnapping Ukrainian children and making sexual videos with them," rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets said in a post on Telegram.

Lubinets added that Russians offered $3,315 (250,000 rubbles) for a boy who is an orphan. He posted an excerpt from an exchange on WhatsApp between two people allegedly discussing using a young boy for a child pornography shoot. The human rights commissioner called on Ukraine's police, cyber police and prosecutors to take "appropriate measures to find and punish the guilty.

A provincial governor in the central Philippines and five other people were shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday (March 3). According to a police statement, Roel Degamo, 56, the governor of the Negros Oriental province and some civilians were hospitalised with unspecified injuries. The shooting took place at Degamo's residence in Pamplona town, the news agency AFP reported on Sunday.

Speaking to AFP, police spokesperson Kym Lopez several gunmen entered Degamo's residence and opened fire as the 56-year-old politician was distributing aid to constituents.

Degamo is the third politician to be shot since the local elections last year. The Philippines has a long history of attacks on politicians. Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos condemned what he described as the "assassination" of his political ally Degamo, and vowed to bring swift justice to his killers.

In February, the Supreme Court declared Degamo the rightful winner of the contest for the Negros Oriental governorship following a recount that unseated his local rival, who previously proclaimed victory.

Also last month, two other politicians were attacked in the country. Mamintal Adiong, governor of the southern province of Lanao del Sur, was shot and wounded in an attack that killed his driver and three police escorts.

Rommel Alameda, the vice-mayor of the northern town of Aparri, and five other people who were travelling with him were shot dead in a highway ambush. The police identified the registered owner of a car used by the assailants in the ambush. According to a report by the Philippine Star on February 22, the police had the name of the owner of the Mitsubishi Adventure, which was found burned in Solano town.

Dozens of schoolgirls across five provinces of Iran — Hamedan, Zanjan, West Azerbaijan, Fars and Alborz — were hospitalised on Saturday (March 4) for poisoning. According to local media, the schoolgirls were transferred to local hospitals for treatment and they are in generally good condition. Iran has been seeing a series of poisoning attacks which come over five months into nationwide protests following the death in custody of 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for incorrectly wearing her hijab.

On Wednesday, at least 10 girls' schools were targetted with poisoning attacks — seven in Ardabil and three in the capital city of Tehran, the reports said.

Ardabil forced the hospitalisation of 108 students, all of whom were in stable condition. According to a report by Fars, parents said that students at one high school in Tehran's western neighbourhood of Tehransar had been exposed to a toxic spray. But there are no more details available on this yet.

On Friday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that he asked the ministers of intelligence and interior to follow up on poisoning cases, dubbing them the enemy's conspiracy to create fear and despair in the people.

This comes after the country's Deputy Health Minister Younes Panahi said the poisonings were aimed at shutting down education for girls, the news agency AFP reported on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Naseer Kanani said that an investigation into the poisonings was one of the immediate priorities of the government, to alleviate the concerns of the families and to hold perpetrators accountable.

Hundreds of cases of respiratory distress have been reported over the last three months among schoolgirls mainly in Qom, south of Tehran, with some needing hospitalisation. The poisonings have provoked a wave of anger across Iran, with critics denouncing official silence in the face of the growing number of schools reportedly being targeted.

A steel plant in Ukraine's Kryvyi Rih city is making metal bunkers for its front-line troops. The bunkers are built to withstand projectiles with calibres of up to 152 millimetres.

A steel plant in Ukraine's Kryvyi Rih city is making metal bunkers for its front-line troops. The bunkers are built to withstand projectiles with calibres of up to 152 millimetres. They can accommodate up to six soldiers and need to be buried about five feet underground, a report by the news agency AP said. The project (to build the bunkers) has been launched by the Ukrainian mining and metals company Metinvest. Petro Zhuk, who manages the 40-person team building the bunkers, said that although the structures take 165 man-hours to produce, including prefabrication, his team can build one a day. Zhuk hoped that Ukrainian troops would find a measure of comfort in the bunkers. ALSO READ | US: Two Kansas men arrested for illegally exporting technology to Russia amid Ukraine war “While they are inside, they cannot worry about an attack that could happen while they are asleep. They can be warm and comfortable,” he added. Metinvest also owns the Azovstal Iron and Steel Works, a plant in Mariupol. When the city was under siege, civilians and soldiers sheltered at the plant and it became a symbol of resistance against Russian attacks. Speaking to local media, the company's chief executive officer (CEO) Yurii Ryzhenkov said that drawings for the bunkers were found in the company's archives when it was a Soviet enterprise. Back then, every plant had to produce something for the army, Ryzhenkov added. 'This is for victory of Ukraine' With Metinvest making bunkers for Ukrainian troops, the workers in the steel plant in Kryvyi Rih are happy that they are contributing to the resistance to Russia's offensive. Vitalii Yevzhenko, 54, a plant worker involved in assembling the bunkers, said he thinks what he and his colleagues are doing is very important. “This is for the victory of Ukraine. The sooner the war ends, the better it will be,” Yevzhenko said. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Ukraine war: Steel plant builds six-person bunkers for front line troops

Authorities in France on Friday (March 3) warned about "narco-tourism" on northern Channel beaches, following two tonnes of cocaine washing ashore drew dozens of beachcombers. A report by the news agency AFP on Saturday said that several batches of watertight packages were found in villages such as Neville-sur-mer, Omonville-la-Rogue and Reville. The total street value of the drug was estimated at $159 million (150 million euros).

Speaking to the Parisien newspaper, Reville mayor Yves Asseline said, "We've seen people arriving in 4x4s, brand new cars or with quad bikes on the beach, sometimes at dawn with head torches."

Police were patrolling beaches regularly with the help of a helicopter which was flying low over the water to spot any suspected packages in the sea. People familiar with the developments told AFP that investigators were still uncertain where the cocaine came from.

On Friday, local prosecutor Philippe Astru warned about the risks of taking part in narco tourism. "The act of taking possession of one of these bundles and transporting it is a crime that carries a punishment of up to 10 years in prison," Astru told reporters.

The prosecutor also said that the purity of the substance was not known so far, adding, that if it was the usual strength of imported cocaine then it could be "fatal'' if consumed.

Three days back, the French government said that police seized 27 tonnes of cocaine in 2022, a five-fold increase compared with the level 10 years back.

Figures released by the Interior Ministry showed that seizures were up five per cent last year compared to 2021, with over half of the narcotic transiting via the West Indies and France's South American region of Guiana.

France warns about 'narco-tourism' on beaches after two tonnes of cocaine washes ashore

A man in China has been severely criticised online for demanding that his friends help pay for the venue and costs of his marriage proposal to his girlfriend. According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on Saturday (March 3), the best friend of the man's girlfriend posted about her outrage at his unreasonable demand that friends who helped plan the marriage proposal pay him about $92 (640 yuan) to cover costs.

The man created a WeChat group to plan his marriage proposal. “Yesterday, all of you had a hard day’s work. This is the cost of the KTV last night; let’s split the bill,” he said, according to the report. He then sent a request to receive payment from his friends in the group, who were asked to pay 640 Yuan each. The friends were initially confused as they had not expected to be asked to pay.

The girlfriend's best friend said the man asked her to help prepare for the event late last year and to help choose a wedding ring. The woman said she advised him how to use drones which he accepted and spent nearly $10,100 (70,000 yuan) to rent 300 drones, the SCMP report said. The marriage proposal went smoothly until the demand for money came.

“It’s really ridiculous,” the woman said, adding she was dedicated to helping the man plan the proposal and even took leave from office to do so. The woman said he never thanked her. She added that she was angry when the man said the drone idea had cost a lot of money.

On social media, users censured the man for demanding money from his friends. “The man is so stingy, so cheap. God bless his fiancée can know the truth before getting married,” one user said. “Are you sharing your wife?” another person said.

Chinese man under fire for demanding friends help pay for marriage proposal

Florence, a west African lioness, has given birth to three cubs, raising hopes that the critically endangered lions can be saved from extinction. In the Niokolo-Koba national park in Senegal, just 29 west African lions remain in the forests that surround the tributary to the Gambia River, where they are threatened by poaching and habitat loss caused by farming, according to a report by the Guardian.

Footage of Florence and her three cubs has given conservationists hope of their survival. Photographs show the lioness caring for her cubs, two males and one female, in February. As per scientists, the park can support about 200 critically endangered lions.

The Guardian report said that the cubs are part of a growing population in Niokolo-Koba, up from 10-15 individuals in 2011 before conservation efforts from Senegalese authorities and Panthera (global wild cat conservation organisation) began five years later. Scientists feared that Florence might have been poached after her GPS collar stopped functioning. They placed camera traps where the lioness was last seen.

Scientists discovered that Florence had been caring for the cubs in a densely forested part of the national park.

Alongside the new cubs, scientists also spotted another lioness that had been injured by porcupine quills and faced death. The quills were removed, and footage showed she was healthy, giving hope of a further expansion of the population, the report added.

Nurses and midwives in Australia have been warned against posting explicit content on OnlyFans. According to an email sent by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of New South Wales (NSW) on Wednesday (March 1), medical workers risked being a distraction for patients even if they produced explicit content in their own time and in a way that did not identify their profession, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

"If a practitioner is the content creator (on OnlyFans), then being recognised or publishing photographs in uniform, they could be reported for their conduct, deemed by the complainant as unprofessional, or as one said, a distraction for patients," the email titled “OnlyFans – Are you breaching the professional standards by subscribing to online content services?” read.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council also listed examples of OnlyFans scenarios for discussion.

"A patient recognises a nurse from her OnlyFans page and advises other patients and her colleagues of the nurse's OnlyFans content. This creates a difficult situation in the workplace. A colleague reports her to the regulator as she believes her conduct is below the expected standards of a registered nurse and that her behaviour has brought the profession into disrepute," one such example read.

"A senior manager recognises a junior from her OnlyFans page and gives her preferential rostering. He later sends her messages on her OnlyFans account asking for the favour to be returned. The nurse reports him to the regulator," another example read.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald report, nurses were alarmed by the email. “As a nurse, I personally found it very moralising and slut-shaming,” one nurse said. “I found that having an NSW statutory body attempting to regulate what nurses and midwives do in the spare time with their bodies as fairly moralistic … I think unless they are tearing off their NSW Health scrubs and talking about how they are a nurse, what damage is it doing to the profession?” she added.

A spokesperson for NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard told the publication that OnlyFans guidelines were a matter for the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which is an independent oversight body, and he would not seek to influence it.
