Former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday (March 9), after he was convicted of helping loot billions of dollars from Malaysia's 1MDB sovereign wealth fund.

A jury in Brooklyn federal court last April found Ng, Goldman's former head of investment banking in Malaysia, guilty of helping his former boss Tim Leissner embezzle money from the fund, launder the proceeds and bribe government officials to win business.

The charges stem from some $6.5 billion in bonds that Goldman helped 1MDB, which was founded to finance development projects in Malaysia, sell in 2012 and 2013.

US prosecutors said $4.5 billion of that sum was embezzled by officials, bankers and their associates, in one of the biggest scandals in Wall Street history.

Funds were used to buy high-end real estate, jewellery and artwork, and finance the Hollywood film, "The Wolf of Wall Street," according to the Department of Justice.

US District Judge Margo Brodie, who imposed the sentence, said Ng and his co-defendants "effectively stole money" meant for infrastructure and economic development projects to aid the Malaysian people.

"There is a critical need to deter crimes of pure greed like this one," Brodie said.

The 1MDB scandal also rocked Malaysian politics. Former Prime Minister Najib Razak is serving a 12-year prison sentence after being convicted by a Malaysian court of receiving $10 million from a former 1MDB unit.

Najib has consistently denied wrongdoing.

In a filing last week, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn urged Brodie to sentence Ng to 15 years in prison, calling him a "deeply corrupt banker" and arguing a stiff sentence was necessary to dissuade other financial professionals from bribing officials to win business.

"Foreign corruption undermines the public's confidence in international markets and institutions," prosecutors wrote. "It destroys people's faith in their leaders and it is deeply unfair to everybody else who plays by the rules."

In his own sentencing request on Feb. 25, Ng asked that he be given no prison time and be allowed to return to Malaysia. He spent six months in a Malaysian prison before waiving his right to contest extradition to the United States in 2018.

Ng had pleaded not guilty and argued that $35 million in kickback payments he was accused of receiving was actually a return on an investment his wife had made.

Leissner had been Goldman's Southeast Asia chief. He pleaded guilty and testified against Ng as part of a cooperation agreement. He has not yet been sentenced.

Jho Low, a Malaysian financier and suspected mastermind of the scheme, was indicted alongside Ng in 2018 but remains at large. Malaysian officials have said Low is in China, which Beijing denies.

In October 2020, Goldman agreed to pay $2.9 billion and its Malaysian unit pleaded guilty to a corruption charge.

According to a report by the Guardian on Thursday (March 9), a letter sent to the permanent secretary of the Home Office accused Braverman of an attack on the integrity and impartiality of thousands of department staff.

The letter was sent by Wynne Parry, the Home Office rep of the FDA union to Matthew Rycroft, the Home Office permanent secretary on Wednesday. It adds to the anger within the home office at the email signed by Braverman which blamed an activist blob of leftwing lawyers, civil servants and the Labour party for blocking laws that curb illegal migration.

After the email was sent, a Home Staff Q&A was leaked. In this, one civil servant wrote, “I have never been so embarrassed and ashamed to work for the department I once loved. Time to move on!”

The report further said that in an attempt to mend relations with civil servants, Braverman sent an email lavishing praise on them for their help with the illegal immigration bill.

Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan says PTI’s problems increased after appointment of new army chief

The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said on Thursday (March 9) that it is expected to vote on March 16 on whether to send demands for information about deceptive advertising to eight social media and video streaming companies.

According to a statement released by the FTC, "the Commission will vote on whether to issue 6(b) Orders to eight social media and video streaming platforms concerning how they monitor and review deceptive advertising on their platforms."

The FTC said that these orders would examine the ad review practices of the companies and if any measures were taken to detect, prevent and reduce deceptive advertising on their platforms. This would include advertising related to fraudulent healthcare products, financial scams, and fake goods, the commission added.

The social media and video streaming companies that would receive the demands have not been identified yet.

Also on March 16, the FTC would vote on issuing demands for information to five business credit reporting agencies concerning how they collect data and market their products.

"A business credit report can affect a small business in many ways, including potentially impacting the terms on which it can obtain goods, services, and equipment necessary for the operation of the business. This study will provide the public with information about an industry that has a significant impact on small businesses, but that currently has little publicly available data about it," Thursday's statement read.

The above developments come after the FTC asked Twitter to turn over some internal communications related to the owner Elon Musk and other detailed information about business decisions as part of an investigation into the social media giant.

The commission has sent over a dozen letters to Twitter and its lawyers since Musk became the owner in October last year. One of the requests was that the social media giant identified all journalists who were granted access to company records. The FTC also wants Musk to testify in connection with the investigation.

US FTC considering probe of deceptive advertising on social media

Toronto's school board has become the first in Canada to recognise that caste discrimination exists in the city's schools and has asked a provincial human rights body to help in creating a framework to address the issue.

The Toronto District School Board on Wednesday voted in favour of a motion to that effect, which was introduced by board trustee Yalini Rajakulasingam. Sixteen trustees voted in favour of the motion and five voted against it.

The move addresses an issue important to the area's South Asian diaspora, particularly the Indian and Hindu communities. It comes weeks after Seattle became the first US city to outlaw caste discrimination after a city council vote.

India's caste system is among the world's oldest forms of rigid social stratification.

"This motion is not about division, it is about creating healing and empowering communities and providing them safer schools that students deserve," Rajakulasingam said.

Rajakulasingam called for a partnership between the human rights commission of Ontario, Canada's most populous province, and Toronto's school board.

The caste system dates back thousands of years and allows many privileges to upper castes but represses lower castes. The Dalit community is on the lowest rung of the Hindu caste system and have been treated as "untouchables."

Caste discrimination was outlawed in India over 70 years ago, yet bias persists, according to several studies in recent years, including one that found people from lower castes were under-represented in higher-paying jobs.

Debate over the caste system's hierarchy is contentious in India and abroad, with the issue intertwined with religion. Some people say discrimination is now rare. Indian government policies reserving seats for lower-caste students at top Indian universities have helped many land tech jobs in the West in recent years, besides a quota in government jobs.

Activists opposing caste discrimination say it is no different from other forms of discrimination like racism and hence should be outlawed.

Toronto school board becomes first in Canada to recognise caste discrimination

Xi Jinping on Friday (March 10) secured an unprecedented third five-year presidential term in China, further tightening his control as the country faces increasing challenges at home and globally.

Xi Jinping on Friday (March 10) secured an unprecedented third five-year presidential term in China, further tightening his control as the country faces increasing challenges at home and globally. Nearly 3,000 members of Parliament, the National People's Congress, voted unanimously for Xi in an election where there was no other candidate. With this, Xi, 69, has become China's most powerful leader since Mao Zedong, who founded the People's Republic, the news agency Reuters reported on Friday. He extends his tenure as president amid increasingly adversarial relations with the United States and western countries over Taiwan, China's backing of Russia, trade and human rights. Here's a look at Xi Jinping's political career so far: The beginnings Xi Jinping was born on June 15, 1953, to Xi Zhongxun and Qi Xin. His father, Xi Zhongxun, was a communist revolutionary and a political leader. According to the DW, Zhongxun was purged in 1962 and was then persecuted and jailed during the cultural revolution in China. Xi Jinping had applied to join the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) several times but was rejected due to his father's political history. He was finally accepted as a member of the CCP in 1974, serving as branch secretary and this marked the beginning of his career in politics, according to the DW. From 1975 to 1979, Xi studied chemical engineering at the Tsinghua University. After graduation, he worked as a secretary for Geng Biao, the then-vice premier and minister of national defence in the Chinese government. ALSO READ | Troubled by sanctions, Xi Jinping wants China to be self-reliant in tech, food production But in 1982, Xi gave up this post and started working as the CCP's secretary in the Herbei province. As the years passed, he was elevated to more senior roles such as numerous provincial governor positions and then the party's chief in Shanghai. In contrast to his father, Xi had a reputation for prudence and for following the party line. In October 2007, he was elected as one of the nine members of the standing committee of CCP's political bureau, the highest ruling body in the party. And a year later, Xi Jinping was elected as the vice president of China. As vice president, Xi focused on conservation efforts and improving foreign relations as he visited several countries including the United States, Germany, Turkey and Japan. The president of China On November 15, 2012, Xi Jinping was elected as the general secretary of the CCP and chairman of the Central Military Commission by the 18th Central Committee of the party, which informally made him China's leader. And on March 14, 2013, Xi was officially elected as the country's president. In 2018, China's parliament elected him for a second term and unanimously voted in favour of an amendment to the Constitution that removed presidential term limits. Previously, China had a limit of two terms but the amendment allowed Xi Jinping to stay in power indefinitely. As president, Xi called for the great rejuvenation of China and for the country to take its due place in the world. However, his leadership has been marked by intolerance for dissent, and a desire to control which has infiltrated almost every aspect of life in modern China. Xi has cracked down on civil society movements, independent media and academic freedoms, overseen alleged human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region, and promoted a far more aggressive foreign policy than his predecessor Hu Jintao. He has also been severely criticised by governments and health organisations for the handling of the Covid pandemic. The 69-year-old Xi has used nationalism as a tool for his own and the CCP's legitimacy among the population. Economic challenges that Xi faces now With Xi securing a third presidential term, he now has to face many economic challenges. China, which is the world's second-largest economy, is facing a tough economic recovery from the three years of the government's zero-Covid policy, a fragile confidence among consumers and businesses and a weak international demand for Chinese exports, a report by the news agency Reuters said. The abrupt ending of the zero-Covid policy led to a spike in infections and deaths. Several regions of China saw their hospitals overburdened by infected patients, a shortage of antiviral medicines and crematoriums being full. In 2022, China's economy grew just three per cent, one of its worst performances in decades. During a parliament session, the government set a modest growth target for this year of just around five per cent. Willy Lam, a senior fellow at the Jamestown Foundation, a think tank based in the United States, said that in the third term as China's president, Xi Jinping would need to focus on economic revival. "But if he (Xi Jinping) continues with what he has been doing — tighter party and state control over the private sector and confrontation with the West, his prospects for success won't be encouraging," Lam told Reuters. Explained: Xi Jinping's rule in China extended. A look at his political career so far

The governor of Taliban-ruled Afghanistan’s Balkh province was killed in a blast at his office on Thursday (March 9) morning. Governor Mohammad Dawood Muzammil and one other person were killed in a suicide attack. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Two people, including Mohammad Dawood Muzammil, the governor of Balkh, have been killed in an explosion this morning on the second floor of his office, in the provincial capital Mazar-i-Sharif,” police spokesman Asif Waziri told AFP.

“It was a suicide attack. We don’t have information as to how the suicide bomber reached the office of the governor,” he said, adding that two people were also wounded.

The incident occurred at around 9:30 am when the governor arrived at his office from home.

“When the governor was coming to his office, the man blew himself up in the office. The governor and a local man were martyred. A mujahid along with another civilian was injured,” said officials as per Dawn. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted that Muzammil was martyred in an explosion by the ‘enemies of Islam’ and investigation is under way.

Mohammad Dawood Muzammil is one of the highest-ranking Taliban officials to be killed in such a circumstance since the group took over Afghanistan in 2021. Muzammil was initially appointed as the governor of the eastern province of Nangarhar where he led the fight against the Islamic State before he was moved to Balkh last year.

Muzammil's death comes a day after he met two deputy prime ministers and other senior officials visiting Balkh to review a major irrigation project in northern Afghanistan, a government statement said, AFP reported.

The fatal attack on the Balkh governor also comes a day after provincial Taliban authorities claimed they had killed eight ‘rebels and kidnappers’ in Mazar-e Sharif, the Balkh provincial capital but had not specified the name of the ‘rebel’ group to which the individuals were allegedly affiliated to.

Violence across Afghanistan has dramatically dropped since the Taliban came to power. However, the security situation in the war-torn country has again deteriorated with the Islamic State claiming several deadly attacks.

Several attacks have rocked the Balkh province, some claimed by the Islamic State. In December last year, a roadside bomb killed seven petroleum company employees aboard a bus in Mazar-i-Sharif city of the province. Also in December, 19 people were killed and 24 injured by a blast at a madrassa in Aybak, southeast of the city.

The governor of Taliban-ruled Afghanistan’s Balkh province was killed in a blast at his office on Thursday (March 9) morning. Governor Mohammad Dawood Muzammil and one other person were killed in a suicide attack.

Afghanistan: Taliban governor of Balkh province killed in suicide attack; IS claims responsibility

In a scene reminiscent of Hollywood action thrillers, two people died on Wednesday (March 8) after a multimillion-dollar heist was foiled at Chile's largest airport. As per the news agency Reuters, footage of the incident at the Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago showed a shootout between robbers and officials from the country's DGAC aviation agency below a LATAM Airlines aircraft.

The robbers entered the airport in three vehicles during the early hours of Wednesday, broke through a gate and headed for the cargo area, news agency AFP reported. A shootout ensued and authorities said that one robber and a DGAC airport security official died.

The aircraft, which arrived from Miami, was carrying $32.5 million to be transported locally by security provider Brinks.

Prosecutor Eduardo Baeza, who is in charge of the investigation, said, "Then these guys broke in, approximately 10 guys broke into the area and were repelled by DGAC security officers, and the incident was avoided, resulting in the death of a DGAC officer and one of the people who participated in the crime,” Baeza added, Reuters reported.

Speaking to reporters, Chile's Undersecretary of Interior Manuel Monsalve said that this case was a failed robbery with "regrettable consequences."

"In other words, the capacities developed by the Ministry of Defence and the Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics and the actions of the port security officials foiled a robbery by a highly organised, highly armed and probably very well-planned robbery," Manuel added.

Aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing and defence technology company Shield AI are set to collaborate on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and autonomy for current and future defence programmes. According to a statement released by Boeing on Wednesday (March 8), the two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding "to explore strategic collaboration in the areas of autonomous capabilities and artificial intelligence".

The agreement, signed at the Air Force Association Warfare Symposium in Colorado, will be managed by Boeing Phantom Works. Steve Nordlund, vice president and general manager for Boeing’s Air Dominance organisation, said on Wednesday that the company has continued to leverage "talent from across the enterprise to make great strides in autonomous capabilities and programmes in recent years."

Nordlund added the collaboration with Shield AI would accelerate Boeing's ability to deliver these capabilities to the warfighter.

According to Wednesday's statement, Shield AI has created Hivemind, an artificial intelligence pilot that has flown a variety of aircraft. The defence technology said the AI pilot can enable swarms of drones and aircraft to operate autonomously without GPS, communications or a human pilot in the cockpit.

Shield AI's President and Co-founder Brandon Tseng that an AI pilot is the most strategic deterrent technology since the introduction of stealth aircraft and has proven successful in flying air-combat scenarios. Tseng, a former Navy SEAL, said that integrating Boeing aircraft with his company's AI pilot would redefine what large aircraft, crewed or uncrewed, could do.

"As the world leader in aerospace technology, Boeing has been exceptionally easy to engage with, so we are excited to expand our scope of work to co-develop, productise and bring to market the world’s best AI pilot for large aircraft,” Tseng added.

More than 1,000 dogs were found dead on the grounds of a house in South Korea's Gyeonggi Province. According to a report by The Korea Herald on Monday (March 6), the property is located in Yangpyeong county. Police have been investigating a man in his 60s on the charges of violating animal protection law, which states that anyone who abuses or is cruel to animals would be subject to three years in prison or fined $23,100 (30 million won).

The man said he collected abandoned dogs and starved them to death.

However, animal rights activists have alleged the man was paid by dog breeders to get rid of dogs who could not get pregnant anymore or whose commercial value dipped, the report said.

Four dogs were rescued from the house and are undergoing treatment at a clinic. The dogs were suffering from malnutrition or skin disease, and two of them were in critical care, the report added.

Speaking to a news channel, a representative from Care, an animal rights group, said the man was paid $7.60 by dog breeders to take care of dogs, and he just locked them up and starved them to death from 2020.

Residents in the neighbourhood looking for their lost dogs found the house full of dead animals last Saturday (March 4) and reported the matter to the police. Many local broadcasters showed blurred images of the dead dogs in cages, sacks and rubber containers on the ground in the yard.

The Care members, who observed the scene, said the bodies had rotten and created a layer on the ground, on top of which more dead dogs were placed to create another layer and so on.
