American television host and Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson passionately hates former United States President Donald Trump. This was mentioned in private text messages which surfaced on Tuesday (March 7) amid hundreds of pages of court filings in the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit filed against Fox News by Dominion Voting Systems.

Carlson, who praised Trump on Fox News several times, now hates him. The private text messages show that the television host was harshly critical of Trump.

“I hate him (Trump) passionately. … I can’t handle much more of this,” Carlson said in a text to an unnamed colleague on January 4, 2021, two days before the Capitol attack.

And in a November 2020 conversation, Carlson said that Trump's decision to snub Joe Biden's inauguration was so destructive. Carlson added that Trump's post-election behaviour was disgusting and that he was trying to look away, CNN reported on Wednesday.

On Trump's presidency, Carlson said “That’s the last four years. We’re all pretending we’ve got a lot to show for it because admitting what a disaster it’s been is too tough to digest. But come on. There isn’t really an upside to Trump.”

Dominion is suing Fox News for allegedly damaging the voting company and American institutions by promoting false claims of election rigging to the news channel's audience following the 2020 presidential election.

The news channel has denied any defamation and has accused Dominion Voting Systems of dishonesty. According to a statement, Fox News said that the voting company was caught "red-handed" using more distortions and misinformation in their PR campaign to smear the channel and trample on free speech and freedom of the press, a report by the Global News on Wednesday said.

“We already know they will say and do anything to try to win this case, but to twist and even misattribute quotes to the highest levels of our company is truly beyond the pale,” Fox News added.

Morning brief: 6 Palestinians killed during Israeli raid in West Bank; protesters, cops clash in Georgia

The United States will relax Covid testing rules for travellers from China as soon as Friday (March 10), the news agency AP reported on Wednesday (March 8) citing sources. The sources said the administration decided to roll back the testing requirements as infections, hospitalisations and deaths are declining in China and Washington gathered better information about the virus surge.

The restrictions were put in place on December 28 last year and took effect on January 5 this year due to the spike in Covid infections in China after it suddenly eased pandemic curbs. Earlier, US health officials had expressed concerns that Beijing was not truthful to the world about the true number of infections and deaths.

The restrictions imposed in January require travellers to the US from China, Macau and Hong Kong to take a Covid test no more than two days before travel and provide a negative test before boarding their flight. The testing applies to anyone aged two and older, including American citizens. The testing also applies to people travelling from China via a third country and to people connecting through the US as they go on to other destinations.

Any person testing positive for the virus more than 10 days before the flight can provide documentation showing they have recovered instead of a negative test result. The AP report also said that it had been left to the airlines to confirm negative tests and documentation of recovery before passengers board.

In early December last year, China eased back from the zero Covid policy which led to a spike in infections and deaths. For weeks, several regions of the country saw their hospitals overburdened by infected patients, a shortage of antiviral medicines and crematoriums being full.

The worsening health crisis in China led to many countries including Japan, Italy, Canada etc to impose restrictions on Chinese travellers.

Last month, Japan announced that it would ease its Covid restrictions on travellers from China from March 1.

Addressing a press conference, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said that instead of blanket testing of travellers from mainland China, the government will only test selected samples, although travellers will still need to show a negative test before boarding their flights to Japan, the news agency Reuters reported.

US First Lady Jill Biden on Monday (March 6) slammed Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley's proposal for a mandatory “mental competency test” for politicians over 75 years old. Speaking to CNN, Biden said Haley's proposal was "ridiculous." On being asked if her husband Joe Biden, who would turn 82 at his inauguration if he’s reelected, would consider taking such a test, the First Lady said, “We would never even discuss something like that.”

As Joe Biden prepares for a possible 2024 presidential campaign, Jill Biden cited his recent travel schedule as reflective of his stamina. “How many 30-year-olds could travel to Poland, get on the train? Go nine more hours, go to Ukraine, meet with President (Volodymyr) Zelensky?” she told CNN.

On February 16, Nikki Haley, 51, while giving a speech in Charleston, called for a mental health test for future American Presidential candidates. “We’ll have term limits for Congress, and mandatory mental competency test for politicians over 75-year-old,” Haley, the former US Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) and former South Carolina governor said, the news agency Reuters reported.

Apart from Jill Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders also slammed Haley's proposal. Speaking to CBS News on February 19, Sanders, 81, called the proposal “absurd” and ageist.

"We are fighting racism, we're fighting sexism, we're fighting homophobia, I think we should also be fighting ageism. Trust people, look at people and say, you know, this person is competent, this person is not competent. There are a lot of 40-year-olds out there who ain't particularly competent," Sanders added.

Nikki Haley defended her proposal for mental health tests and said Sanders is “exactly the reason we need it.”

And on March 3, she stepped up attacks on Donald Trump over his age. Without naming the former president directly, Haley called on conservatives at a national forum to trust a "new generation" of leaders, the news agency AFP reported.

"If you're tired of losing, put your trust in a new generation," Haley urged attendees at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held just outside Washington.

Former United States (US) First Lady Michelle Obama opened up about how she felt on the day of then-President Donald Trump's inauguration in January 2017. She shared her experience on the "Michelle Obama Light Podcast" (by Audible) on Tuesday (March 7).

"That day was emotional for so many different reasons. We were leaving the home we had been in for eight years. The only home our kids really knew. They remembered Chicago, but they had spent more time in the White House than anywhere else," Obama said.

“There were tears, there was that emotion. But then to sit on that stage and watch the opposite of what we represented on display – there was no diversity, there was no colour on that stage, there was no reflection of the broader sense of America," she added.

"You walk through the Capitol, you wave goodbye, you get on Marine One and you take your last flight off flying over the Capitol, where there weren’t that many people there. We saw it," the former First Lady said, in an apparent jab at Trump over how many people attended his inauguration.

Obama said the family then went to the Andrews Air Force Base, said goodbye to the military, and got on Air Force One. "And when those doors (of Air Force One) shut, I cried for 30 minutes straight. Uncontrollable sobbing," Obama also said during the podcast.

Since leaving the White House, Michelle Obama has revealed details about her mood on the day of Trump's inauguration. According to a report by ABC news, Obama said in her book that she was unable to put on a happy face and smile during the inauguration.

In the audio of the book, Obama said, "Someone from Barack’s administration might have said that the optics there were bad, that what the public saw didn’t reflect the President’s reality or ideals, but in this case, maybe it did. Realising it, I made my own optic adjustment. I stopped even trying to smile," according to the report.

I cried for 30 minutes straight: Michelle Obama on day of Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017

The Canadian government on Tuesday (March 7) expunged the historic indecency and anti-abortion laws targeting women and members of the LGBTQ community. The repealed laws had targeted women and LGBTQ individuals' access to abortion as well as to bathhouses, nightclubs, and swinger clubs, considered to be safe spaces for the queer communities.

In a statement published in Cision, Canada's Minister for Public Safety Marco Mendicino said on Tuesday, "Today's additions of abortion-related, bawdy house and indecency-based offences to the Expungement of Historically Unjust Convictions Act (which came into effect in 2018) represent yet another important and necessary step towards righting historical and systemic discrimination faced by many Canadians."

On the other hand, the country's Women and Gender Equality and Youth Minister Marci Ien said that citizens deserved non-discriminatory policies that put their safety first, which is why the government "recognises that past laws and regulations were unjust and compromised the freedoms of 2SLGBTQI+ communities and women."

"This is another crucial step in achieving the goals set out in the Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan – by continuing to promote human rights and encourage the development of inclusive federal policies, programs, and laws," Ien added.

By repealing these laws, people with previous convictions can apply for an expungement order for free under the Expungement of Historically Unjust Convictions Act, which allows for the permanent destruction of historically unjust records of conviction, the news agency Reuters reported on Tuesday.

There is no fee to apply for an expungement order. Applicants would be needed o provide evidence that the conviction meets certain criteria. "Given the historical nature of the offences, sworn statements/solemn declarations may be accepted as evidence if applicants have demonstrated that court and police records are not available," the above statement read.

In case the person is deceased, an appropriate representative, such as a family member or a trustee, can apply on their behalf.

In a statement published in Cision, Canada's Minister for Public Safety Marco Mendicino said on Tuesday, "Today's additions of abortion-related, bawdy house and indecency-based offences to the Expungement of Historically Unjust Convictions Act (which came into effect in 2018) represent yet another important and necessary step towards righting historical and systemic discrimination faced by many Canadians." "This is another crucial step in achieving the goals set out in the Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan – by continuing to promote human rights and encourage the development of inclusive federal policies, programs, and laws," Ien added. ALSO READ | In a first, five pregnant women sue the state of Texas over abortion ban By repealing these laws, people with previous convictions can apply for an expungement order for free under the Expungement of Historically Unjust Convictions Act, which allows for the permanent destruction of historically unjust records of conviction, the news agency Reuters reported on Tuesday. A politician from Australia's Victoria proposed to his partner amid a busy Parliament schedule. "I think we should get married," Victorian Labor MP Nathan Lambert told his partner Noah Erlich in Parliament, which led to joyful reactions from both sides of the chamber, a video shared by ABC News on Tuesday (March 7) showed.

“I won’t bring a ring out now, because I’m not allowed to have any props," Lambert said. “But it’s securely stored at the moment and I am planning in fact to bring it out very romantically tonight in the roughly 10 minutes between the kids falling asleep and us collapsing of exhaustion,” the MP added and his response was met with a huge round of applause.

Lambert, a father of two children, presented Erlich with a ring after his speech. “She said yes which was pretty great,” he said, according to a report by The Guardian.

A clash was reported along the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region in the Caucasus on Sunday (March 5), killing five people, including two Azeris and three Armenians. According to pro-Armenian separatist authorities, a sabotage group of Azerbaijani armed forces opened fire on the car of the Passport and Visa Department and three police officers were killed, the news agency AFP reported.

Azerbaijan, however, denied this version, with the defence ministry saying that its forces were trying to stop vehicles carrying weapons, when Azerbaijani servicemen were fired at. As a result of the exchange of fire on both sides there are dead and wounded, it said.

Armenia then hit back by saying that Baku's version was absurd and resulted from a provocation planned and instructed by the top leadership. Following the incident, Armenia also said that it was sending an international fact-finding team to the Lachin corridor and Nagorno-Karabakh was becoming a vital necessity.

This comes after Azerbaijan’s defence ministry on Sunday said that two of its servicemen were killed after their troops stopped the vehicle and claimed that the convoy had used an unauthorised road. Meanwhile, Armenia's foreign ministry said three officials from the Karabakh interior ministry were killed.

Furthermore, Azerbaijan's defence ministry said that the incident showed that the government needed to create an appropriate checkpoint on the Lachin-Khankendi road.

AFP reported that since mid-December last year, self-styled Azerbaijani environmental activists have barred the only road linking Karabakh to Armenia, the Lachin corridor, to protest what they called illegal mining. Yerevan has accused Baku of creating a blockade there.

The two countries have fought two wars, which have killed thousands, for the control of Azerbaijan's Armenian-populated enclave of Karabakh. The landlocked region that still remains under Armenian separatist control is guarded by Russian peacekeepers.

A citizens' jury in the United Kingdom (UK) has urged ministers to consider changing the law to allow scientists to carry out genome editing of human embryos for serious genetic conditions.

A citizens' jury in the United Kingdom (UK) has urged ministers to consider changing the law to allow scientists to carry out genome editing of human embryos for serious genetic conditions. The jury is made up of individuals whose lives have been affected by the hereditary disease. The report, published in Wellcome Connecting Science, has made "15 recommendations centered around transparency, inclusivity and equal access to treatment that should be considered in deciding whether to legalise editing of human embryos to treat genetic diseases." According to Cambridge University on Tuesday (February 28), over 2.4 million people in the UK are currently living with a genetic condition. This includes disorders, such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anaemia, which are caused by variations in a single gene and can be inherited in families. It is illegal (in the UK) to perform genome editing on embryos that lead to pregnancy, the university said. "The NHS does offer a service to couples who carry a heritable genetic trait to screen IVF embryos, meaning only embryos without the inherited condition are implanted. However, this approach is not suitable for everyone," it added. The views of the individuals most affected by genetic conditions are timely due to two reasons, the 3rd International Summit on Human Genome Editing starting on Monday (March 6) and UK legislation due to be debated in parliament later this year. Professor Anna Middleton, the leader of the project from Wellcome Connecting Science and the University of Cambridge, said that though all jurors have personal experience of an inherited genetic condition, their views on the editing of human embryos were varied, nuanced and complex. "Many of the discussions were emotional, and the responsibility felt by the jurors to represent wider society in their deliberations was clear," Middleton said. She added that when the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act is debated in Parliament and discussions emerge on the editing of human embryos, it is imperative that the voices of patients are heard as part of this. What do the jurors have to say? Andrea-Reid Kelly, one of the jurors said that before the jury, she did not know much about editing of human embryos or have a strong opinion about it. "I’m a bit of a fence-sitter by nature. But by the end of the jury, I went from a neutral opinion to being in favour of parliamentary debate about potentially changing the law to allow editing of human embryos to treat genetic conditions," Kelly said. Kelly was born with a significant heart condition, which was later learnt to be caused by Noonan syndrome. She said this is a genetic condition that can cause heart problems, distinctive facial features, small stature and specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. She had heart surgery when she was four years old and then again when she was 33. "So far as we know, neither of our daughters has Noonan syndrome. Because the gene that causes my case is unknown, we can’t test them to know for sure," she added. Kelly also said that she met another person with the syndrome some years ago, and could identify with their experience and bond over challenges. Another juror, Brenda Poku, suffers from sickle cell disease and her brother also has the condition. Sickle cell disease is a genetic condition caused by a faulty gene that affects the shape of red blood cells. One of the most common symptoms is bouts of pain, which are very unpredictable in timing and severity, sometimes requiring strong painkillers like morphine or even hospitalisation. This condition is particularly common in people with African or Caribbean ancestry. Poku is originally from Ghana and moved to the UK to study for her doctorate. "I was originally a nurse, but now I research sickle cell disease from the perspective of patient experience and service provision," she said. "Being in healthcare, I had some knowledge of genome editing before I took part in the citizens’ jury. There are advanced genome editing trials for sickle cell disease, with some of the participants having been ‘cured’. Researchers are monitoring them to make sure there are no unintended long-term side effects, but it’s likely there will be a cure for sickle cell in my lifetime," Poku said. "During the jury event, I gained a new appreciation of why some people may want to take advantage of human embryo editing and would say that swayed me towards thinking it needed to be considered," she added.
