The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has said that the global supply of cocaine is at record levels. In its "Global Report on Cocaine 2023," the UNODC said the surge is partly a result of an expansion in cocoa bush cultivation, which doubled between 2013 and 2017, hit a peak in 2018 and rose sharply again in 2021.

But this surge is also because of improvements in the process of conversion from cocoa bush cocaine hydrochloride. The UNODC said that the Covid pandemic had a disruptive effect on drug markets. ALSO READ | Colombian navy seizes semi-submersible craft carrying tonnes of cocaine, finds two bodies "With international travel severely curtailed, producers struggled to get their product to market. Night clubs and bars were shut as officials ramped up their attempts to control the virus, causing demand to slump for drugs like cocaine that are often associated with those settings," it said. However, most recent data suggests this slump had little impact on long-term trends. "In parallel, there has been a continuing growth in demand, with most regions showing steadily rising numbers of users over the past decade. Although these increases can be partly explained by population growth, there is also a rising prevalence of cocaine use," the UNODC said in its report. It further pointed out that interceptions by law enforcement agencies have also been on the rise "at a higher speed than production (of cocaine), meaning that interdiction has contained the growth of the global amount of cocaine available for consumption." North America and Western and Central Europe remain the largest destination markets for cocaine, but data suggested that new markets are the fastest growing. Africa and Asia have emerged as potentially developing markets. Africa The UNODC said in its 2023 report that Africa continues to play a significant part in the global cocaine market. "While an important aspect of this is its role in as a transit region, this role has also likely contributed to the development of local markets," it added. The drugs agency said that the prevalence of past-year use for Africa overall is estimated at 0.27 per cent as of 2020, an average level significantly less than the Americas, Europe and Oceania, but above Asia (0.07 per cent). "However, Africa remains the region most affected by a lack of data on drug supply and demand and any estimate is affected by a high level of uncertainty," the report said. Citing seizure data, the UNODC said the role of Africa, especially West and Central Africa, as a transit zone for cocaine on its way to destination markets such as Europe has expanded substantially starting in 2019. Asia When it comes to Asia, the UNODC said the indications of cocaine use and trafficking in East and South-East Asia are limited and point mainly to moderate levels of use in specific urban pockets, and to the exploitation of some countries in this subregion as transit points for cocaine trafficked towards urban consumer centres or other destination markets. "However, this subregion accounts for a large share of the world’s population and a number of these countries have experienced strong economic growth, creating a burgeoning middle class which could be susceptible to the initiation of cocaine use," the report said. Taiwan on Thursday (March 16) warned Honduras against taking aid from China no matter how indebted it was. Honduras' decision to seek official relations with China and cut them with Taiwan has led to concerns in Taipei. China does not allow countries with which it has diplomatic relations to maintain official ties with Taiwan.

Speaking to reporters, Taiwan's foreign ministry spokesperson Jeff Liu said on Thursday, "Regarding the signs of alarm in the relationship between both countries (Taiwan and Honduras), the foreign ministry is still trying until now to maintain the friendship. This ministry and overseas embassies will keep doing their best."

Liu added that it was "absolutely untrue" that no efforts were made after receiving the news of Honduras' intentions to shift relations to China, adding that Taiwan would "absolutely not engage" in money competition with Beijing, the news agency Reuters reported.

"At the same time, we remind the Honduran government that it should not quench its thirst with poison, even if fully parched by debt obligations, and end up falling into China's debt trap," the foreign ministry spokesperson added.

On Tuesday, Honduran President Xiomara Castro said that she asked her foreign minister to open official relations with China. If Honduras ended relations with Taiwan, the island would be left with only 13 diplomatic allies.

On Wednesday, Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina said the decision to switch relations with China was partly because Tegucigalpa was "up to its neck" in financial challenges and debt - including $600 million it owes Taiwan, Reuters reported.

Reina said his government asked Taiwan to double its annual aid to $100 million but never got an answer. However, Taipei denied this and said that comments from the Honduran foreign minister did not reflect the facts of their communications.

Apart from Taiwan, the United States has also warned Honduras about seeking official relations with China. On Wednesday, a US State Department spokesperson said, "The Honduran Government should be aware that the PRC (People's Republic of China) makes many promises that are unfulfilled. Even though the economic crisis continues in Pakistan, many ministers are still not willing to return their luxury vehicles despite Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asking them to do so as part of an austerity drive aimed at saving the government over $707 million (200 billion PKR) a year.

On Monday (March 13), a meeting of the monitoring committee on the implementation of austerity measures presided over by the country's Finance Minister Ishaq Dar was informed that more than half of the luxury vehicles given to cabinet members, parliamentary secretaries and chairmen of standing committees were not returned to the cabinet division which maintains the government's central pool, according to a report by The Dawn on Tuesday.

The report added that many senior bureaucrats were still using official sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and sedan cars above 1800cc despite the austerity policy approved by the government in February.

The meeting of the monitoring committee was told in a compliance report that out of 30 luxury vehicles, 14 had been returned and 16 were still in use, The Dawn reported citing sources. However, a statement from the finance division said that a majority of cabinet members surrendered their luxury vehicles.

“The meeting expressed concerns over the non-return of remaining luxury vehicles and directed the cabinet division for strict implementation of the decision and to get back the luxury vehicles within three days,” the statement said. The meeting also deliberated upon the withdrawal of the use of security vehicles.

Finance Minister Dar directed all concerned quarters to expedite the implementation of austerity measures with sincerity and true spirit without any exception.

Monday's meeting also discussed working hours and it was decided that new timings for offices would be 7.30 am to 2.30 pm and up to 12.30 pm on Friday, starting from the first of Ramzan and would be followed in the summers as per the decision of the cabinet, the report also said.

Mary McCoy, a radio presenter from the US state of Texas, is the world's longest-serving female radio presenter, according to the Guinness World Records on Tuesday (March 14).

Mary McCoy, a radio presenter from the US state of Texas, is the world's longest-serving female radio presenter, according to the Guinness World Records on Tuesday (March 14). With 71 years and 357 days in the industry, McCoy was verified on February 15 as having the longest career as a female radio presenter/DJ. According to Guinness, "Mary beat the previous record holder by more than three years to claim the top spot, and she’s got no plans to give up the job she treasures any time soon." A radio presenter at the age of 12 Mary McCoy's record-breaking career started back in 1951. She took part in a talent show at the radio station KMCO when she told presenters that she wanted her very own show. And four months later, her dream came true. At just 12 years old, McCoy started working as a radio presenter for five days a week. Speaking to Guinness on Tuesday, McCoy, now 85, said that it was her dream to get into the entertainment business. "I started out singing at talent shows and I was asked to audition for a radio show. They liked what they heard and I started working at KMCO Radio on 20 April 1951 doing a 15-minute singing programme," McCoy said. “In August 1951, I had the pleasure of becoming a radio presenter/DJ, and although the radio station has changed ownership (KIKR and now KSTAR) I have maintained this job,” she added. However, McCoy continues to work hard and presents a two-hour Country Classics show six days a week on K-Star Country. She has also been inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. Sharing the stage with Elvis Presley One of the most memorable moments of Mary McCoy's over seven decades career is sharing the stage with Elvis Presley — the "King of Rock and Roll." An up-and-comer at the time, in 1955, Presley’s band even backed McCoy up as she performed several numbers to the audience. Speaking to The Bulletin newspaper, the radio presenter recalled how Presley tripped and hit his head while making his way to the stage. “I don’t know how he performed that night with a huge goose egg on his forehead, but he didn’t disappoint the fans,” she laughed. A new study has suggested that having higher levels of caffeine in your blood may lower body fat and also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The study, published online in the BMJ Medicine journal on Tuesday (March 14), said the objective (of the study) was to investigate the potential causes of long-term plasma caffeine concentrations on adiposity, type 2 diabetes, and major cardiovascular diseases.

Explaining that caffeine has thermogenic effects, the researchers noted that previous studies linked caffeine intake with reductions in weight and fat mass. And observational data showed associations between coffee consumption with lower risks of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The researchers used data from studies of mainly European populations to examine two specific genetic mutations that have been linked to a slower speed of caffeine metabolism.

Using Mendelian randomisation, Susanna C. Larsson, PhD, of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden and colleagues examined data that came from a genome-wide association meta-analysis of 9,876 individuals of European ancestry from six population-based studies.

"Genetically predicted, lifelong, higher plasma caffeine concentrations were associated with lower body mass index and fat mass, as well as a lower risk of type 2 diabetes," the study said. It added that approximately half of the effect of caffeine on this chronic condition was estimated to be mediated through body mass index (BMI) reduction.

The study also highlighted that small and short-term trials showed that caffeine intake resulted in weight and fat mass reduction, but the long-term effects were unknown.
"Consumption of coffee, a rich source of caffeine, is observationally associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease," it said.

ALSO READ | People who are married or in a relationship at lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes Using Mendelian randomisation, Susanna C. Dr Stephen Lawrence from Warwick University in the United Kingdom (UK) noted that the finding supported existing studies suggesting a link between caffeine consumption and increased fat burn, according to a report by Medscape. The inundation of Burketown and other communities continued as the flood water slowly began to recede. The Queensland Police said on Tuesday that major flooding was still occurring in the declared disaster area and floodwater heights across the catchment were still subject to change.

"Water reserves and food supplies are good, and resupply continues as required. Residents from Burketown are still instructed to conserve water usage and monitor advice from Burketown Shire Council," the police added.

Senior Sergeant Adrian Rieck from the Mount Isa District Disaster Coordination Centre, meanwhile said, that current conditions still posed a threat to residents.

Rieck said, the centre "is closely monitoring the flood water as it moves throughout the entire catchment and is in contact with all communities and stations that may be at risk and ensuring preparations are in place for everyone’s safety.”

“Support is available to affected communities and a number of air assets, including the RACQ Life Flights AW139 helicopter, are stationed nearby and on standby for health emergencies, and the transport of food, water and medical supplies," he added.

The senior sergeant also said it was still unsafe for displaced people to return to their homes and police remind residents to limit movement in the flood water due to unseen hazards and recent crocodile sightings.

A Russian strike in Ukraine's Kherson city on Saturday (March 11) killed three people and injured two others. According to Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of Kherson's regional military administration, the casualties occurred when a car was hit by a shell and caught fire, the news agency AFP reported. Taking to Telegram, Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine's presidential office posted a photograph of firefighters standing next to the charred car. "Russian terrorists are shelling Kherson again," Andriy Yermak said. Kherson is among the four regions along with Donetsk, Lugansk and Zaporizhzhia — that Russia claims to have annexed but still does not fully control. Despite Moscow retreating from Kherson late last year, it continues to pound the city. Battle for Bakhmut rages on On Saturday, three Mi-8 helicopter gunships of the Ukrainian military unleashed strikes on Russian targets near Bakhmut. Speaking to AFP, one of the pilots said that the targets were an enemy fortification line made up of troops on the ground, armoured vehicles, and a munitions depot. The fortification lies near Severodonetsk, which the Russian army seized last year, to the northeast of Bakhmut. Earlier on Saturday, an aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine decided to fight in Bakhmut as the battle was pinning down Russia's best units and degrading them. Meanwhile, the Russian mercenary group Wagner said that its forces were close to the centre of the frontline hotspot in the Ukrainian city. In a video posted on Telegram, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin is seen standing on a roof of a high-rise building in what is said to be Bakhmut. "This is the building of the town administration, this is the centre of the town. It is one kilometre and two hundred metres away," Prigozhin said. UFC Fight Night: Merab Dvalishvili defeats Petr Yan by unanimous decision

A survey done in the United Kingdom (UK) over school students' attitudes to pornography revealed that a significant number of young people between the ages of 14 and 18 are watching porn frequently, with some of them becoming addicted to sexually explicit content. A report by The Guardian on Friday (March 10) said that the study done by Dignify (a charity that researches sexual abuse), spoke to 4,000 students in the above age group in Hertfordshire.

Dignify found that 22% of these students viewed porn on multiple occasions. Of those, one in five students said that they had a porn habit and one in 10 said they felt addicted.

In the survey, young people were asked what age they were when they first saw pornography. The average age was 12 but the youngest age was three. The survey also said that a third of young people received a nude video or photo, and of these well over half had received a nude from a stranger, The Guardian reported.

Dignify's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Helen Roberts said that it was impossible to tackle the embedded behaviours of sexual harassment in schools without talking about the harmful impact pornography is having on children and young people. Roberts said the charity was particularly concerned by many children telling that they are addicted to porn.

Meanwhile, teaching unions said that schools across the UK have been struggling to meet demands in educating students about online harm, in particular pornography. This week, a decision by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to order a review of the way sex education is taught in schools was labelled politically motivated by the unions. They said they saw no evidence of claims by Conservative MPs that children were being shown age-inappropriate materials in classrooms.

Speaking to the publication, the headteacher of one of the schools that have worked closely with Dignify, said there was a rise in the number of students reporting sexual assaults in recent years.

"We saw the number of students reporting sexual assault start to increase seven to eight years ago and at first we didn’t know why. And then working with Dignify I began to learn about the impact porn was having on our students," the headteacher, who wished to remain anonymous said.

“The correlation between sexual abuse and watching porn is very high. The majority of what they see is violent,” the headteacher added.

Suspected militants of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killed at least 17 people and injured four others in eastern DR Congo's North Kivu province on Sunday (March 12). The attack took place in the early hours of Sunday at Kirindera village in North Kivu's Beni territory. Speaking to the news agency AFP, Kirindera's chief Katembo Kahongya said the militants also set fire to the buildings.

"They used bladed weapons and fire to execute the population," Kahongya said. Meanwhile, a resident Mukondano Kambale told the news agency that the militants killed people in a hotel and a health clinic before being chased away. "It's fear and desolation in the centre of Kirindera," Kambale added.

This attack in eastern DR Congo comes just days after ADF militants killed more than 40 people in twin attacks in neighbouring North Kivu villages on Wednesday. According to an army spokesperson, the attacks were carried out in retaliation for the army detaining more than 22 ADF collaborators and closing down pharmacies allegedly supplying the group with chemicals to make bombs.

A day later, a delegation from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in the country assessed the security and humanitarian situation in North Kivu.

The ADF, which the Islamic State claims as its central African affiliate, is one of the main militant groups behind the bloodshed in eastern Congo, where around 10,000 people have been killed since 2017, as per the Kivu Security Tracker.

Since 2021, a joint operation launched by the militaries of Congo and Uganda has been targeting militia in eastern DR Congo, but attacks have nonetheless continued.

Last week, the United States offered a reward of up to $5 million for information concerning ADF leader Seka Musa Baluku. Two years back, Washington designated Baluku as a global terrorist and his group as a foreign terrorist organisation, blocking assets and property interests.
