Taiwan on Thursday (March 23) recalled its ambassador to Honduras over a visit by the Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina to China. In a statement, Taiwan's foreign ministry said that Honduras ignored more than 80 years of friendship when it sent its foreign minister to China, which seriously damaged the feelings of Taiwan's government and its people. "We have decided to immediately recall our ambassador in Honduras to express our strong dissatisfaction," the statement said as reported by the news agency AFP.

Taiwan's response comes as Honduran Foreign Minister Reina was heading to China to hold discussions on the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Chinese government.

Reina is accompanied by lawmaker Xiomara Zelaya, the daughter of President Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento, three government and diplomatic officials told AFP on Thursday. The Honduran delegation will meet Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. However, Beijing has not confirmed the visit.

China has claimed democratically governed Taiwan as part of its territory to be retaken one day — by force, if necessary. Under Beijing's "One China" principle, no country may maintain official diplomatic relations with both China and Taiwan. Taipei also maintains a somewhat similar policy and has cut ties with countries that switched recognition to Beijing.

Last week, Honduran President Castro ordered Foreign Minister Reina to establish diplomatic relations with China, a move which was severely criticised by Taiwan. Reina had said that economic necessity and Taiwan's refusal to increase financial aid to Honduras were behind the decision to establish ties with Beijing.

If Honduras does formally switch recognition, it would leave Taiwan with just 13 countries with which it has formal diplomatic ties.

Taiwan recalls ambassador to Honduras over its foreign minister’s China visit

The oldest known near-complete Hebrew Bible was presented in Israel's Tel Aviv city on Wednesday (March 22), where it will be displayed for a week before being sold at an auction.

The oldest known near-complete Hebrew Bible was presented in Israel's Tel Aviv city on Wednesday (March 22), where it will be displayed for a week before being sold at an auction. The Codex Sassoon, which is estimated to be 1,100 years old, is one of the only two codices, or manuscripts, containing all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible. According to a report by the news agency AFP on Wednesday, Sharon Mintz, a specialist in Jewish texts at Sotheby's, the auction house selling the codex in May, said that carbon dating and other forms of the analysis showed the Codex Sassoon was written around the year 900 either in Israel or Syria. As per Sotheby, the codex is significantly more complete than the Aleppo Codex, dated to the same era. Its pre-sales estimates put the manuscript's value at between $30 million and $50 million. Mintz said a deed showed that the book was sold in 1000 AD, adding the codex was then held in a synagogue in what is now northeastern Syria until around 1400. "The manuscript then disappears for about 500 years, and re-emerges in 1929 when it was offered for sale to David Solomon Sassoon, one of the greatest collectors of Hebrew manuscripts," she said. "What you see here is an accurate, stabilised standard text of the Hebrew Bible, written over 1,000 years ago, as accurate as it is today," the Sotheby specialist told the news agency. The Hebrew Bible will be displayed at the ANU Museum of the Jewish People. Speaking to the news agency, the museum's curator Orit Shaham Gover said the ANU expected to draw the museum's full capacity of 10,000 visitors for the week. The manuscript bridges the Dead Sea Scrolls -- which date back as early as the third century BC -- and today's standard texts of the Hebrew Bible. Gover said that the Codex Sassoon bears a cultural significance beyond its linguistic and historic value. "The Bible plays a central role for any person with even a fleeting connection to Western culture, and this is the first Bible that survived history," Gover added. "The Bible wandered in all kinds of places throughout history, and was displayed only once to the public in 1982 at the British Library, and since then was always in private hands," the curator further said. Gover also pointed out that it is very important that Israelis will get to see his highly important Bible. Over two dozen state governments in the United States have placed web-tracking code made by TikTok's parent company ByteDance on their official websites. Citing a report from Toronto-based company Feroot Security, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday (March 21) that a review of websites of over 3,500 companies, organisations and governments entities by Feroot found that the so-called tracking pixels from ByteDance were present in 30 American state government websites across 27 states, including those where TikTok was banned from state networks and devices.

The report said that administrators who manage government websites use such pixels to help measure the effectiveness of advertising they have purchased on TikTok. This helps government agencies determine how many people saw an advertisement on the social media platform and took an action such as visiting a website or signing up for a service.

The report added that pixels' proliferation offers another vector for data collection beyond TikTok's mobile app, which has been severely criticised in the US as a possible way for China to collect data on American citizens.

Feroot's Chief Executive Ivan Tsarynny said that TikTok's pixels could be watching and recording people when they are reviewing their driver's licence, paying taxes or filing out doctors' forms. Tsarynny said that pixels should be removed from the websites of government agencies and companies which collect personal details.

Security experts have pointed out that while web-tracking pixels ostensibly aim to better pinpoint advertising, they also pose privacy threats.

Replicating a sampling of Feroot Security's findings, The Wall Street Journal identified TikTok tracking pixel in the code of a Maryland Department of Health Covid website and a Utah government website aimed at helping job seekers. Recently, both Maryland and Utah issued executive orders banning TikTok from state-owned devices and networks.

However, this tracking pixel remained embedded in these two websites as recently as last week.

Speaking to the publication, a spokesperson from the Utah Department of Workforce Services said that the department works with an advertising agency to run educational campaigns that inform the state's residents about how to access programmes that could help them get a better jobs. The spokesperson added the tracking pixel was used in such a campaign.

On the other hand, a spokesperson from Maryland's health department said that the pixel on its website was part of an advertising campaign launched in August and the state was investigating why it remained on the site after the campaign ended. The spokesperson added that the pixel was removed as of March 17.

A spokesperson from TikTok, meanwhile, said that the data that the platform receives from advertisers are used to improve the effectiveness of our advertising services.

“Our terms instruct advertisers not to share certain data with us, and we continuously work with our partners to avoid inadvertent transmission of such data," the spokesperson added.

US: Over two dozen state govts use trackers made by TikTok’s parent company, says report

A group of content creators on the Chinese video-sharing platform TikTok descended on the US Capitol on Wednesday (March 22) to protest against the calls for a ban on the app. According to a report by the news agency AFP early Thursday, the group of around a dozen teenagers, teachers and business owners rallied at Congress to discuss their opposition to the potential ban (on TikTok) and also draw attention to the benefits of the app on their livelihoods.

An aspiring soapmaking entrepreneur who goes by the username @countrylather2020 on TikTok said that she kind of built her business on the app, and the potential ban somewhat posed problems. "Are there other platforms out there? Absolutely -- I'm on them. But none of them have the reach that TikTok has," she said.

Another creator on TikTok Jason Linton, who uses the platform to share videos of his three adopted children and has interacted with people worldwide, opposed the ban. "I am asking our politicians - don't take away the community that we've all built - a community that lasts, that loves," Linton said during a press conference on Wednesday.

Apart from content creators, three Democratic Party lawmakers are also protesting against the ban. Lawmaker Mark Pocan said that a "xenophobic witch hunt" was motivating some in Congress to seek a ban, a report by the news agency Reuters said. "Banning TikTok isn't the answer. Making sure Americans' data is safe is," Pocan added.

Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat leader, said on the Senate floor on Wednesday that TikTok was a threat that needed to be addressed but it was not the only surveillance threat to young people.

The United Kingdom (UK) has defended sending depleted uranium shells to war-torn Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin's warning, according to a report by BBC early Wednesday (March 22). On Tuesday, Putin had said that Moscow would be forced to react if the UK gave Kyiv military supplies, including armour-piercing ammunition which contains depleted uranium.

"The United Kingdom... announced not only the supply of tanks to Ukraine but also shells with depleted uranium. If this happens, Russia will be forced to react," Putin told reporters after meeting his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Earlier, the British government had confirmed that it would provide Ukraine with the armour-piercing rounds alongside Challenger two tanks, but insisted they have a low risk of radiation. A statement from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that depleted uranium is a standard component and has nothing to do with nuclear weapons, the BBC reported early Wednesday.

"Russia knows this but is deliberately trying to disinform. Independent research by scientists from groups such as the Royal Society has assessed that any impact to personal health and the environment from the use of depleted uranium munitions is likely to be low," the statement added.

Colonel Hamish de Breton-Gordon, a former British Army tank commander, said that Russian President Putin's comments were classic disinformation. Depleted uranium is a by-product of the nuclear enriching process used to make nuclear fuel or nuclear weapons. It is around 60 per cent as radioactive as natural uranium. Its heaviness lends itself to use in armour-piercing rounds as it helps them easily penetrate steel.

However, the United Nations Environment Programme has described it as a "chemically and radiologically toxic heavy metal."

CND, an anti-nuclear organisation, condemned the decision to send armour-piercing ammunition to Ukraine, calling it an "additional environmental and health disaster for those living through the conflict".

CND general secretary Kate Hudson said that the organisation repeatedly called for the British government "to place an immediate moratorium on the use of depleted uranium weapons and to fund long-term studies into their health and environmental impacts," the news agency AFP reported.

Ukraine war: UK defends sending uranium ammo to Kyiv after Putin's warning, says report

Taiwan's Deputy Defence Minister Po Horng-huei said on Wednesday (March 22) that the ministry has contingency plans for any moves by China during Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen's overseas visit. Addressing a press conference, Po Horng-huei was asked whether Beijing was likely to stage more drills when President Tsai is abroad.

Po Horng-huei said the armed forces were prepared and added, "When it comes to what the Chinese communists have done in the past, the defence ministry can have a grasp on it, and will consider the worse scenario."

"During the president's overseas visit, the defence ministry has contingency plans for all moves (by China)," the deputy defence minister said and gave no further details, the news agency Reuters reported.

Starting next week, Taiwanese President Tsai will visit diplomatic allies Guatemala and Belize and she would be stopping in New York and Los Angeles. Belize and Guatemala are two of just 14 countries that officially recognise Taiwan over China. And President Tsai's trip comes after Honduras decided to open official relations with Beijing.

While in California, Tsai is expected to meet US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in the most sensitive leg of her trip. But Taiwan declined to confirm whether this meeting would take place, Reuters reported. China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its territory, carried out large-scale war games around the island in August last year after a visit to Taipei by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

China has condemned Tsai Ing-wen's US stopover. On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbi said, "We firmly oppose any form of official exchanges between the US and Taiwan," he told a press briefing in Beijing. China has made solemn representations to the US in this regard," the news agency AFP reported.

Washington, meanwhile, said that there was no reason for China to react to the Taiwanese president's trip (to the US), saying such transits were routine and happened many times before.

American technology giant Apple is seeking changes in India's labour laws as part of its efforts to expand local production. According to a report by the news agency Bloomberg on Tuesday (March 21), regional governments are yielding to Apple's request as they are eager to snatch the iPhone assembly from China. Speaking to Bloomberg, sources said that the Southern state of Tamil Nadu, where Apple's top supplier Foxconn Technology Group operates India’s largest iPhone plant, is considering passing new rules that will make factory shifts more flexible.

The sources said that executives from Apple and Indian Cellular and Electronics Association lobby group, which represents the company as well as its suppliers like Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron, met with Tamil Nadu government officials over six months to push for the reforms. They added that the changes would bring local working hours on par with the iPhone factories in China.

The above moves are part of Apple's effort to shift more production away from China to countries including India. Bloomberg reported that the suggested changes include allowing factories to have two shifts of 12 hours each, instead of the previous three shifts where each shift was for eight hours.

The report said that local officials are keen to attract the business and jobs that Apple represents. It added that the suggested changes could also encourage more women to work in factories.

Labour reforms in India are rare and the country's willingness to accommodate Apple shows how badly it wants to become an electronics manufacturing hub. The sources also told the news agency on Tuesday that Apple and its suppliers are in talks to build large working women’s hostels in and around factory complexes, which would reduce travel time.

The ICEA lobby group said that the above reforms are overdue and at the heart of Make in India's policy objectives. “It helps bring more women with safety and comfort into the work environment like never before,” the ICEA added.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that the world is already only a few tenths of a degree away from the global target of limiting warming to 1.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that the world is already only a few tenths of a degree away from the global target of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. In its latest report on climate change, released on Monday (March 20), the IPCC said that there are multiple, feasible and effective options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to human-caused climate change. "This Synthesis Report underscores the urgency of taking more ambitious action and shows that if we act now, we can still secure a liveable sustainable future for all," the report said. Back in 2018, the IPCC highlighted the unprecedented scale of the challenge needed to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. But five years later, this challenge has even become greater because of a continued increase in greenhouse gas emissions. If left unchecked, climate change will undo a lot of the progress made over the past years in development. So what is climate change, what are its consequences and what are the solutions? What is climate change? According to the United Nations (UN), climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. The UN says that these shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle. Climate change can affect our health, ability to grow food, housing, safety and work. "Some of us are already more vulnerable to climate impacts, such as people living in small island nations and other developing countries," the UN says. "Conditions like sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion have advanced to the point where whole communities have had to relocate, and protracted droughts are putting people at risk of famine. In the future, the number of “climate refugees” is expected to rise," it adds. What are the consequences? The UN says that the consequences of climate change include intense droughts, water scarcity, severe fires, rising sea levels, melting polar ice, catastrophic storms and declining biodiversity. What happens if climate change is left unchecked? If left unchecked, climate change can undo a lot of the progress made over the past years in development. It can also exacerbate threats such as food and water scarcity, which can lead to conflict. The UN says that doing nothing will end up costing a lot more than if actions are taken now that will lead to more jobs, greater prosperity, and better lives for all while reducing greenhouse emissions and building climate resilience. Is climate change affecting people's lives? Yes, people's lives are being affected by climate change. Severe weather and rising sea levels are affecting people and their properties in developed and developing countries. The UN points out that climate change is especially affecting the poor and vulnerable, as well as marginalised groups like women, children and the elderly. What are the solutions? Climate change can be addressed, but the efforts have to be ramped up. The UN says that countries must transform their energy, industries, transport, food, agriculture and forestry systems to ensure that rise in global temperatures can be limited to well below two degrees, perhaps even 1.5. "We also need to anticipate, adapt and become resilient to the current and future impacts of climate change," the UN says. It points out that many climate change solutions can deliver economic benefits while improving lives, and protecting the environment. The UN also says that switching energy systems from fossil fuels to renewables like solar or wind will reduce the emissions driving climate change. Switching energy systems from fossil fuels to renewables like solar or wind will reduce the emissions driving climate change. "But we have to start right now. While a growing coalition of countries is committing to net zero emissions by 2050, about half of emissions cuts must be in place by 2030 to keep warming below 1.5°C. Fossil fuel production must decline by roughly 6 per cent per year between 2020 and 2030." The importance of keeping warming below 1.5ºCelsius In several UN reports, thousands of scientists and government reviewers have agreed that limiting global temperature rise to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius would help avoid the worst climate impacts and maintain a livable climate. Yet policies which are currently in place point to a 2.8°C temperature rise by the end of the century. The Synthesis report on Monday said that if temperatures are to be kept to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, deep, rapid, and sustained greenhouse gas emissions reductions will be needed in all sectors this decade. Emissions need to go down and be cut by almost half by 2030, if this goal has any chance of being achieved. On Monday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the report as a “how-to guide to defuse the climate time bomb.” Guterres proposed to the G20 a "Climate Solidarity Pact,” where big emitters would make extra efforts to cut emissions, and wealthier countries would mobilise financial and technical resources to support emerging economies in a common effort to ensure that global temperatures do not rise by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The Indian government on Wednesday (March 22) removed external security, including barricades placed outside the United Kingdom's (UK) mission and High Commissioner Alex Ellis' residence in New Delhi, after the Indian High Commission in London was vandalised by Khalistani extremists last Sunday (March 19). Visuals on Twitter showed the barricades nowhere to be seen outside the mission and the residence of Alex Ellis.

On being asked about the removal (of barricades), a British High Commission spokesperson told WION, "We do not comment on security matters."

He added that if the British Police were completely derelict in their duty and they allowed this nonsense to happen, "this is a major insult that we can't tolerate."

Taking to Twitter, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said, “Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamara”- UK Govt must act against those miscreants who attempted to disrespect the Indian Flag at High Commission, London. Punjab & Punjabis have a glorious track record of serving/protecting the Nation. Handful of jumping jacks sitting in UK do not represent Punjab."

India removes security from outside UK mission after vandalism at Indian High Commission in London

Prosecutors in Virginia released video footage on Tuesday (March 21) that showed the death of 28-year-old Black inmate Irvo Otieno as he was being admitted to a mental hospital, where he was forcibly restrained by as many as 10 police officers and hospital security guards. Otieno was already in handcuffs and leg restraints when police brought him from the Henrico County jail near Richmond, Virginia, to the Central State Hospital in nearby Petersburg.

The nine-minute-long footage, published by the Washington Post, showed seven officers bringing the shirtless and shoeless Otieno into a room at the hospital on March 6. Otieno, however, did not seem to struggle.

The officers placed him on the floor and then held him down at length, the purpose unclear, with one officer laying on him and another pressing his knee to Otieno's head or neck. At the same time, up to 10 hospital workers watched, some sometimes helping out.

Eventually, the 28-year-old went limp and efforts to resuscitate him proved fruitless.
