A major tragedy was averted on Friday (March 24) after an Air India and Nepal Airlines aircraft came close to collision mid-air but the warning systems alerted the pilots whose timely action prevented the disaster, the news agency PTI reported on Sunday citing authorities.

A major tragedy was averted on Friday (March 24) after an Air India and Nepal Airlines aircraft came close to collision mid-air but the warning systems alerted the pilots whose timely action prevented the disaster, the news agency PTI reported on Sunday citing authorities. The Nepal Airlines aircraft coming to Kathmandu from Kuala Lumpur and the Air India aircraft coming to Kathmandu from New Delhi almost collided. According to Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) spokesperson Jagannath Niroula, the Air India aircraft was descending from 19,000 feet while the Nepal Airlines aircraft was flying at an altitude of 15,000 feet at the same location. Niroula added that after it was shown on the radar that the two aircraft were in proximity, the Nepal Airlines aircraft descended to 7,000 feet. Two officials suspended for 'carelessness' Niroula also told PTI that the CAAN suspended two officials of the air traffic controller department for "carelessness". These two officials were in charge of the control room at the time of the incident. The Civil Aviation Authority has formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the matter. This incident comes days after a Shree Airlines Dash 8 turboprop made a safe emergency landing in Nepal on March 9 after an "indication of fire" in one of its engines. The aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa in southwest Nepal with 78 people, including the crew, on board. The aircraft landed safely in Kathmandu and all passengers and crew were safe, Niroula said on March 9. On January 15, an ATR 72 aircraft owned by Yeti Airlines carrying 72 people crashed before its scheduled landing in Pokhara. All people on board, including four crew, were killed. Air force commanders from Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark said on Friday (March 25) that they signed a letter of intent to create a unified Nordic air defence aimed at countering the rising threat from Russia. The air force commanders had first discussed the closer cooperation at a meeting in Sweden in November last year.

“The ultimate goal is to be able to operate seamlessly together as one force by developing a Nordic concept for joint air operations based on already known NATO methodology,” Denmark's air force said in a statement.

Speaking to the news agency Reuters, Major General Jan Dam, the commander of the Danish air force, said that the move to integrate the air forces of the Nordic countries was triggered by Russia's offensive in Ukraine in February last year. Major General Dam added that the combined fleet could be compared to a large European country.

Reuters reported on Friday that Sweden has over 90 Gripens jets; Norway has 57 F-16 fighter jets and 37 F-35 fighter jets with 15 more of the latter on order, and Finland has 62 F/A-18 Hornet jets and 64 F-35s on order. Denmark, meanwhile, has 58 F-16s and 27 F-35s on order.

However, it was unclear how many of these aircraft were operational.

The signing at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany last week was attended by NATO's Air Command chief General James Hecker, who also oversees the US Air Force in the region, the news agency reported.

Norway and Denmark are already members of NATO. Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO last year and Finland is expected to join the inter-governmental military alliance within weeks. Sweden, on the other hand, is facing a delay due to resistance from Turkey and Hungary.

German airline Lufthansa's operations were disrupted on Sunday (March 26) at the Frankfurt airport due to technical problems caused by external IT service providers.

German airline Lufthansa's operations were disrupted on Sunday (March 26) at the Frankfurt airport due to technical problems caused by external IT service providers. According to a report by the news agency dpa, check-in systems on Lufthansa's website and at the counter, as well as boarding, were affected at the airport, an airline spokesperson said. Some flights were delayed or would have to be cancelled because of the problems. Check-in, however, was still possible using cellphone browsers on smartphones or tablets, and the Lufthansa app. The airline also asked travellers to check the status of their flights and said it was working with high pressure to resolve the problems. This disruption comes a month after cable damage during construction work in Frankfurt caused Lufthansa's computer systems to fail which resulted in flight cancellations and delays worldwide. Transport strike in Germany tomorrow On Monday, a national strike in Germany will bring the country's traffic to a standstill with airport, train and public transportation employees all protesting for higher salaries. The strike, which is the largest in decades, already started at Munich Airport on Sunday Speaking to the Bild newspaper, a top union boss justified the strike as a matter of survival for thousands of people fighting for higher wages as inflation soars. Monday's strike will be the latest in months of industrial action and demonstrations that have hit major European economies as higher food and energy prices dent living standards. In Germany, the Verdi Union is negotiating on behalf of around 2.5 million employees in the public sector, including in public transport and at airports. And EVG, the railway and transport union, is negotiating for around 230,000 employees at Deutsche Bahn and bus companies. A report by the news agency Reuters on Sunday said that Verdi is demanding a 10.5% wage increase which would see pay rising by at least $538 (500 euros) per month and EVG is asking for a 12% raise or at least $700.86 (650 euros) more per month. The first sign of Alzheimer's disease (AD) may appear in the eyes, according to a recent study. Researchers have been exploring how the eye may help in diagnosing Alzheimer’s before symptoms begin.

The first sign of Alzheimer's disease (AD) may appear in the eyes, according to a recent study. Researchers have been exploring how the eye may help in diagnosing Alzheimer’s before symptoms begin. According to a report by CNN health on Friday (March 24), Dr Christine Greer, director of medical education at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Florida, said, "The eye is the window to the brain." “You can see directly into the nervous system by looking into the back of the eye, toward the optic nerve and retina,” Dr Greer added. Dr Richard Isaacson, an Alzheimer’s preventive neurologist working at the same institute, said that the disease begins in the brain decades before the first symptoms of memory loss. Dr Isaacson said if doctors are able to identify Alzheimer's in its earliest stages, people can then make healthy lifestyle choices and control their modifiable risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, as per the report. The study, published in Acta Neuropathologica in February, said that Alzheimer’s disease pathologies were discovered in the accessible neurosensory retina. "However, their exact nature and topographical distribution, particularly in the early stages of functional impairment, and how they relate to disease progression in the brain remain largely unknown," it said. To better understand the pathological features of the disease in the retina, researchers conducted an extensive histopathological and biochemical investigation of postmortem retina and brain tissues from 86 human donors. The study said that a quantitative examination of superior and inferior temporal retinas from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's patients compared to those with normal cognition (NC) revealed significant increases in amyloid β-protein (Aβ42) forms and novel intraneuronal Aβ oligomers (AβOi), which were closely associated with exacerbated retinal macrogliosis, microgliosis, and tissue atrophy. "These pathologies were unevenly distributed across retinal layers and geometrical areas, with the inner layers and peripheral sub-regions exhibiting most pronounced accumulations in the MCI and AD versus NC retinas. While microgliosis was increased in the retina of these patients, the proportion of microglial cells engaging in Aβ uptake was reduced," it added. The study also pointed out that female patients exhibited higher levels of retinal microgliosis than males. Proteomic analysis of Alzheimer's retinas revealed activation of specific inflammatory and neurodegenerative processes and inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation/mitochondrial, and photoreceptor-related pathways. In a statement, author Maya Koronyo-Hamaoui, a professor of neurosurgery and biomedical sciences at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, said that the study is the first to provide an in-depth analyses of the protein profiles and the molecular, cellular, and structural effects of the disease in the human retina and how they correspond with changes in the brain and cognitive function. “These changes in the retina correlated with changes in parts of the brain called the entorhinal and temporal cortices, a hub for memory, navigation and the perception of time,” Koronyo-Hamaoui added. Indian multinational conglomerate Tata Group is considering injecting another $2 billion into its super app venture Tata Neu as the group seeks to bolster its digital business. Speaking to the news agency Bloomberg on Thursday (March 23), sources said that Tata Digital Pvt. will receive the additional funding over two years should a deal proceed.

One source said that this fresh capital could help Tata Neu to strengthen its digital offerings, fix technical glitches and meet any fresh spending needs.

The source added that the Tata Group asked Tata Digital to look for ways to boost the valuation of Neu. The report said that any fresh capital would come as Tata Digital is reviewing its strategy and fending off e-commerce rivals including Amazon and Flipkart.

Tata Neu was modelled on China's Alipay and WeChat. However, it ran into technical glitches and customer complaints after its launch last year.

Neu allows users to buy groceries and gadgets as well as reserve flight tickets and restaurants from brands under Tata. The app also comes with a membership service and offers financial products such as bill payments, loans and insurance. The super app is expected to meet just half of the sales target in its debut year.

Bloomberg earlier reported that Neu would see sales of about $4 billion in the year to March 31, compared with the $8 billion target set at the beginning of 2022. In 2020, the news agency said that Tata Sons Pvt. Ltd. had explored bringing in financial or strategic investors including global technology companies, to back the super app.

Tata Group considers injecting another $2 billion into super app venture: Report

Jean-Pierre Bemba, a former rebel leader in Congo jailed by the International Criminal Court (ICC), was appointed as the country's deputy prime minister and defence minister in a cabinet reshuffle. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Friday (March 24), Bemba's appointment was announced on Thursday on state television by President Felix Tshisekedi’s spokesperson.

Bemba was Congo's vice president from 2003 and 2006 and was later imprisoned by the ICC for over 10 years, accused of murder, rape and pillaging committed by his Movement for the Liberation of Congo forces in the neighbouring country of Central African Republic.

He was acquitted by the ICC in 2018. His return to politics comes nine months ahead of the presidential election in Congo. According to analysts, Bemba's comeback was likely decided to help Tshisekedi win votes in Congo’s northeast, where Bemba’s rebel group was popular in the 1990s and 2000s, the Associated Press reported.

Benjamin Hunter, Africa analyst for Verisk Maplecroft, a risk assessment firm, said, “This is clearly a pre-election reshuffle and Jean-Pierre Bemba has been appointed to bring his supporters in line to rally behind the president ahead of the race."

Hunter added that despite Bemba's previous imprisonment by the ICC, he is a political heavyweight with patronage networks and a contact book to help Tshisekedi’s election campaign.

Conflict in eastern Congo has been simmering for decades, and President Felix Tshisekedi came to office in 2019 promising to stop the country's instability and violence, but it only increased.

Apart from Bemba's appointment, other new government postings in Thursday's cabinet reshuffle include Tshisekedi’s former chief of staff, Vital Kamerhe, who was named the minister of the economy, the report said. And Antipas Mbusa Nyamwisi, a former warlord in Ituri province was appointed minister of state for national integration.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been in the news in recent months with many questioning whether it will replace humans in the workforce in the future. Many people globally have started using AI for tasks such as writing emails, article summaries, cover letters, etc. AI is also being used in the field of medicine to search medical data and uncover insights to help improve health outcomes and patient experiences. Cancer- a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body- continues to plague countries. And among all types of cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer occurring in women globally. Several factors including genetics, lifestyle, and the environment have contributed to the rise in the prevalence of breast cancer among women. Proper screening for early diagnosis and treatment is an essential factor when combating the disease. According to a report published in the PubMed Central (PMC) journal in October last year, faster and more accurate results are some of the benefits of AI methods in breast cancer screening. Use of AI in breast cancer screening Breast cancer is more effective to treat if diagnosed early and the effectiveness of treatment in the later stages is poor. The report in the PMC titled- "Artificial Intelligence in Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis" says that the incorporation of AI into screening methods is a relatively new and emerging field that shows a lot of promise in the early detection of breast cancer, thus resulting in a better prognosis of the condition. "Human intelligence has always triumphed over every other form of intelligence on this planet. The defining feature of human intelligence is the ability to use previous knowledge, adapt to new conditions, and identify meaning in patterns. The success of AI lies in the capacity to reproduce the same abilities," it adds. Incorporating AI into the screening methods such as the examination of biopsy slides enhances the treatment success rate. Machine learning and deep learning are some of the important aspects of AI which are required in breast cancer imaging. Machine learning is used to store a large dataset, which is later used to train prediction models and interpret generalisations. On the other hand, deep learning- the newest branch of machine learning- works by establishing a system of artificial neural networks that can classify and recognise images, as per the report. Regarding breast cancer treatment, the use of AI for early detection by making use of data obtained by radiomics and biopsy slides is done. This is backed by a global effort to manufacture learning algorithms for understanding mammograms by reducing the number of false positives as an outcome. "AI has increased the odds of identifying metastatic breast cancer in whole slide images of lymph node biopsy. Because people's risk factors and predispositions differ, AI algorithms operate differently in different populations," the report further says. Challenges of AI in breast cancer treatment AI seems a very helpful tool when it comes to treating cancer. It has shown impressive outcomes and there is a possibility that it can change every method of treatment which is used presently. However, there are some challenges. The report, published in the PMC journal in October last year, says that a concerning question is where can one draw the line between AI and human intelligence. "AI is based on data collected from populations. Therefore, a disparity is sure to rise when it comes to the development of data from people belonging to different socio-economic conditions," it adds and points out that cancer is one particular disease that has indices that vary across different races. Studies relating to the efficiency of AI have certain set outcomes that can be used to assess their standards and credibility. And for AI machines to be accepted, people must be able to independently replicate and produce the machine like any other scientific finding. This implies a common code must be available to all, and it is only possible if data is shared with everyone equally. AI models used for managing cancer are centred on image data, and the report says the problem with this aspect is the underutilisation of patient histories saved as electronic health records in hospitals. "Easy-to-access databases and user-friendly software must be incorporated into the software systems of hospitals worldwide, which is a difficult task at the moment." One of the biggest challenges is building trust among doctors to make their decisions with the help of AI, and adequate training must be provided to doctors on how to use this technology. Another challenge is that there are a lot of ethical risks to consider while using AI methods which include data confidentiality, privacy violation, the autonomy of patients, and consent. But the report said that many measures are taken to prevent any violation of confidentiality and legislation to keep a check on malpractices. Taliban trying to take charge of more Afghan embassies abroad

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Saturday (March 25) that over 5,000 former criminals were pardoned after finishing their contracts to fight in the group against Ukraine. In an audio clip posted on Telegram, Prigozhin said, "At present, more than 5,000 people have been released on pardon after completing their contracts with Wagner," the news agency Reuters reported. Prigozhin added that only 0.31 per cent of those pardoned after serving with Wagner go on to commit a crime, a figure he said was 10-20 times less than the standard indicators.

Wagner, the Russian mercenary group, has played an important role in the Ukraine war after the Russian army suffered a series of humiliating defeats last year. Yevgeny Prigozhin emerged from the shadows and recruited thousands from prisons, offering them freedom for serving in some of the most dangerous battles in Ukraine.

The announcement of criminals being pardoned comes after Prigozhin told Russia's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu that the Ukrainian army was planning an imminent offensive aimed at cutting off his Wagner forces from the main body of Russian troops in eastern Ukraine.

In a letter to Shoigu on Monday, Prigozhin said that the large-scale attack was planned by Ukraine for late March or the start of April. He urged the defence minister to take all necessary measures to prevent Wagner from being "cut off from the main forces of the Russian army, which will lead to negative consequences for the special military operation."

This was the first time that the Wagner chief published such correspondence with Shoigu, who he frequently criticised over the conduct of the war. Prigozhin also said on Monday that he was providing details of the Ukrainian plan and of his proposal to counter it in an attachment to the letter, Reuters reported.

In separate comments published on Telegram, Prigozhin also said there was a "high probability" that the Russian city of Belgorod would be one of the targets of the coming Ukrainian offensive.
