With the number of cases of heart ailments witnessing an unprecedented rise, a study has shed some light on the reason behind the worrying trend. The people leading sedentary lifestyles have a high risk of experiencing a stroke in comparison to people who regularly carry out light- to moderate-intensity exercises, the study said. The study was published in the online database ‘JAMA Network Open’ last week. In it, around 7,600 people, who had an average age of around 63, were provided accelerometers and sensitive motion detectors to record physical activity, media reports said.

The people, who indulge in light to moderate exercises for just around 25 minutes a day have less chances of suffering a stroke than those leading a sedentary lifestyle, the researchers of San Diego State University (SDSU) found.

The lead researcher of the study, Steven Hooker, who is also the dean of SDSU’s College of Health and Human Services, said, “Light-intensity physical activity can include vacuuming, sweeping the floor, washing the car, leisure strolling, stretching, or playing catch.”

A probe into 830,000 Tesla vehicles with advanced driver assistance system Autopilot has been upgraded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Thursday, the regulator said. The move seems to be the required step before it orders a recall. After a dozen crashes where Tesla vehicles struck stationary emergency vehicles, a preliminary evaluation to assess the performance of the system was started by the auto safety agency in 765,000 vehicles.

On Thursday, the agency identified six more crashes and upgraded its probe to an engineering analysis. The regulator is trying to ascertain that whether Tesla vehicles are ensuring that drivers are paying attention. The evidence suggested that drivers in most crashes had complied with the alert strategy of Tesla, which seeks to compel the attention of the driver, the agency added. It raises questions about the effectiveness of the ‘Autopilot’.

The upgrade is "to extend the existing crash analysis, evaluate additional data sets, perform vehicle evaluations, and to explore the degree to which Autopilot and associated Tesla systems may exacerbate human factors or behavioral safety risks by undermining the effectiveness of the driver’s supervision," NHTSA said. "On average in these crashes, Autopilot aborted vehicle control less than one second prior to the first impact," the agency added.

In the near future, the world may witness robots with skin and similar movements. No, we are not kidding, it may become possible as a “slightly sweaty” robotic finger, which is covered with living skin, has already been developed by the Japanese scientists. This may help in achieving the never-seen-before feat of human-like robots. The finger seems to have been able to heal itself. This impressive technical feat, which has lifelike anatomy, may reduce the difference between living flesh and machine. But people may also find it creepy.

The study has been published in the journal ‘Matter’. “We are surprised by how well the skin tissue conforms to the robot’s surface. But this work is just the first step towards creating robots covered with living skin,” said Shoji Takeuchi, professor, University of Tokyo, who also led the work.

“I think living skin is the ultimate solution to give robots the look and touch of living creatures since it is exactly the same material that covers animal bodies. Such advances had the potential to build a new relationship between humans and robots,” Takeuchi said.

The robotic finger was first submerged in a cylinder by the team. The container was filled with a solution made up from mixture of collagen and human dermal fibroblasts. These are the two main components, which make up the connective tissues of the skin. The surface of the finger got coated with this substance to ensure the next layer of cells called human epidermal keratinocytes can stick to it.

On bending, the natural-looking wrinkles form at the finger. When it gets wounded, the skin can self-heal like humans’ with the help of a collagen bandage. It feels like normal skin but it is weaker and has to be kept moist, as per the scientists.

“The finger looks slightly sweaty straight out of the culture medium. Since the finger is driven by an electric motor, it is also interesting to hear the clicking sounds of the motor in harmony with a finger that looks just like a real one,” said Takeuchi.

Reuniting with a long-lost love after years is heavenly. This holds true for a recent meeting between a 91-year-old Korean War veteran Duane Mann and his lady love Peggy Yamaguchi, who is of the same age. Mann described the emotional meeting, which was held earlier this week after a gap of 70 years, to be a “freeing experience”. But it seems it was truly the work of destiny as he could finally track her down and get united again after several efforts.

In 1953, Navy man Mann had first met Yamaguchi in Japan, where he was stationed from 1953 to 1954. In free time, Mann used to repair slot machines at an Air Force NCO Club. In it, Peggy used to work as a “hat check girl.” The two had decided to tie the knot but Mann was discharged and sent back to the US two months early.

On reaching home, Mann found that his father had spent all savings, which he was looking to use to call Yamaguchi to the US. For some time, the couple exchanged letters until one day Mann stopped receiving any mail from her. He found out later that his mother had burnt letters as she did not want Mann “to marry a Japanese girl.”

India has come up with its own indigenous Covid vaccine for animals known as Anocovax. This is the first such shot. The vaccine, which was launched by Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday, has been developed by Haryana-based ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines (NRC).
If you love to spend time in surfing or checking out different things on the phone regularly, it's time to rethink. Researchers have suggested that spending long hours on the phone can shorten the lifespan. The activity can damage the eyes and have an impact on other body processes too, media reports said citing experts at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in California state of the US. The exposure of light on the eyes can disrupt the circadian rhythm and worsen chronic disease, the researchers said.

As eyes are constantly exposed to the world, their immune defenses are strong in comparison to other organs. When these defenses become overactive due to the heavy light exposure through the phone every day, it can disrupt internal body processes. This can also harm other organs.

Space is a dangerous place. Anything can happen anytime. The recent incident with James Webb Space Telescope seems to have proved this. In only a few months after launch, the new space observatory of NASA has experienced its first noticeable micrometeoroid impact, media reports said. But the agency seems to be unfazed. On Wednesday (June 8), NASA announced that the next-generation observatory sustained some impact from small pieces of space debris for the first time. There is nothing to worry, the agency said, while adding that it will not impact the $10 billion observatory's schedule and scientific legacy.

In the statement, Lee Feinberg, Webb optical telescope element manager, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, said, "With Webb's mirrors exposed to space, we expected that occasional micrometeoroid impacts would gracefully degrade telescope performance over time. Since launch, we have had four smaller measurable micrometeoroid strikes that were consistent with expectations, and this one more recently that is larger than our degradation predictions assumed."
