A succession of weak data releases in Europe and the United States as global stock markets slipped for the second straight day on Wednesday and bond yields inched lower on growing fears that policymakers bent on dampening inflation will tip their economies into recession, as reported by Reuters.

The central bankers are doubling down on hawkish rhetoric. More is likely later on Wednesday when the heads of the European Central Bank, U.S. Federal Reserve and Bank of England speak at a central banking forum. 
Data on Tuesday showed U.S. consumer confidence dropped to a 16-month low in June, yet several Fed policymakers pledged further rapid interest-rate hikes, citing the need to tame “unbridled” inflation. Those U.S. figures, following a raft of dismal consumer confidence data across Europe, triggered steep Wall Street falls, sending the S&amp;P 500 and the Nasdaq indexes down 2% and 3% respectively.

That weaker momentum carried into Wednesday, sending an Asian ex-Japan index 1.4% lower, while a pan- European equity index eased 0.3%, snapping a three-day rally. U.S. and German 10-year bond yields slipped 5-6 basis points, the former down more than 30 bps from mid-June highs.

The consumer sentiment deterioration clearly points to a recession, Citi told clients. After 7.5%-7.9% annual inflation prints across German provinces, an 8% June reading is expected for the country later in the day, versus 7.9% in May.

As reported by Reuters, Paul O’Connor, head of Janus Henderson’s multi-asset team in London, predicted “stormy” markets as long as the growth- inflation question marks persisted.

“The problem is that the level of inflation is so problematic in so many parts of the world and we are a long way from central banks being able to declare the job is done,” O’Connor said.

“We will undoubtedly get growth downgrades over the summer but we will also get a rising perception of recession risk and I don’t think markets are fully priced for it,” he added.

While parts of the Chinese stock market, including property, extended gains on Wednesday, the positive impact of the news largely petered out - the Chinese blue-chip, which hit four-month highs on Tuesday, slumped 1.5% and Hong Kong lost 2%.

Wall Street futures flatlined.

A recent Commission report decried an explosion in the sales of vaping devices in the EU, giving it the right to widen an existing law from 2014 on the prohibition of tobacco products. He also said that several people "had to undergo amputations", after being wounded in a Russian strike on Monday. The strike killed eight people in Lysychansk and wounded 21 others.

Lysychansk is the Russian forces' next target in their bid to take the whole of Ukraine's eastern Donbas area, made of the Lugansk and Donetsk regions.

Over the weekend, they captured Lysychansk's twin city, Severodonetsk, after weeks of fierce fighting.

"One started beating and the others kept people away, scared everyone. I also saw a weapon.

"It went very fast and it lasted a very short time but I'm still shaking a little bit."

The venue was evacuated but visitors were eventually let back into the fair, which draws tens of thousands of people over several days. No one was hurt, police said.

"A stall was raided, they fled and we started the search," Wim Coenen, a spokesman for Limburg province police, told AFP. "There were four suspects, two were arrested."

In a fire that broke out during a prison riot in southwestern Colombia on Tuesday, at least 49 inmates were killed and dozens more were injured, the national prisons agency said. The tragedy occurred when rioting inmates set a fire to try to prevent police from entering their enclosure at the prison in the city of Tulua, said Tito Castellanos, director of the National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC).

"Unfortunately there was a riot in the pavilion number eight of the Tulua prison, where there are 1,267 prisoners, with the unfortunate result that 49 people died," Castellanos told La W Radio.

He said another 30 people were "injured and affected by the blaze and the smoke."

As reported by AFP, Castellanos said authorities were investigating whether prisoners had lit their mattresses as part of an "escape attempt" or whether the riot was provoked "to cover some other situation." He made no mention of whether any prisoners actually escaped.

A report by Caracol Radio said more than 40 people had been injured. There were 180 inmates in the prison section affected by the fire.

Fatal prison riots are not uncommon in Latin America. In Colombia's neighbour Ecuador, nearly 400 prisoners have been killed in six riots since early 2021. Colombia's prison system has a capacity of 97,000 inmates but is overpopulated by some 16,000, according to INPEC.

“Among the 507 influenza outbreak... in 17 provinces between April 4 and June 19, 503 were in southern China, a sharp increase from the 136 in 2021 in the same period,” the latest report by the Chinese National Influenza Center (CNIC) said, according to the Global Times report. An influenza outbreak is defined as 10 or more cases.

“Driven by huge demand, influenza antiviral drugs such as oseltamivir are in short supply in many pharmacies of southern China,” the news report added.

According to CDC, you cannot tell the difference between flu and COVID-19 just by looking at the symptoms alone because they have some of the same symptoms. That’s why testing is needed to tell what the illness is and to confirm a diagnosis. Testing is also important because it can reveal if someone has both the flu and COVID-19 at the same time.

“The Xiamen (city) health commission in Fujian suggested (paediatricians) to not get involved with Covid-19 related work so as to better deal with the influenza high season among children,” the news report said.

Health officials in other provinces too have issued “alerts over the high prevalence of influenza and hospitals (have) adjusted measures to avoid crowded line-up and concentrated presence in public places,” it added.

“I would love to never charge a single euro, pound or dollar,” says Martín Ibabe, the city councillor responsible for citizen safety, as reported by The Guardian. “The objective here is to prevent these types of incidents from happening. The confrontational nature of this law is aimed at making people think twice.”

The city has also been beset by what Ibabe calls “clear acts of irresponsibility”, including a tourist left stranded by tides after he dozed off on a stone jetty and a drunken woman who scrambled down the rocks in an area known for its ferocious waves.

The city began drafting the bill two years ago. Recently there has been a rise in cases of reckless swimming, and people ignore signs stating the beach is closed.
