Japanese youth will get free noodles- Here's what they need to avail the offer

As the Sri Lankan economy further dips into crisis with shortages of everything from medicines to gas, people are returning to cooking with firewood. Sri Lanka used to be a middle-income country, with GDP per head comparable to the Philippines and living standards the envy of neighbouring India. But with economic mismanagement and the crucial tourism industry hammered by Covid, the nation has run out of dollars needed to pay for most imports. And the pain will likely continue for some time, with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in parliament on Tuesday saying, "We will have to face difficulties in 2023 as well. This is the truth. This is the reality."

The switch began at the beginning of the year when more than 1,000 kitchens exploded across the country, killing at least seven people and injuring hundreds more. The reason was suppliers looking to cut costs and increase the proportion of propane, which raised the pressure to dangerous levels. But now, along with much else in the country of 22 million people, gas is either unavailable or too expensive for most, as reported by AFP.

Some tried to shift to kerosene oil cookers, but the government did not have dollars to import them along with petrol and diesel, which are also in short supply. And those who bought electric cookers were in for a rude shock when the government imposed lengthy power blackouts as it ran out of dollars to import fuel for generators.

Niluka Hapuarachchi, 41, was miraculously unharmed when her gas range exploded soon after cooking Sunday lunch in August. "Fortunately, no one was there at the time. There were pieces of glass all over the floor. The glass-top stove had exploded. I will never use gas for cooking. It is not safe. We are now on firewood," she said, despite moves to address the propane problem.

Roadside eatery owner M.G. Karunawathi, 67, also switched to wood and said it was a choice between closing her business or putting up with smoke and soot. "We suffer (smoke inhalation) when cooking with firewood, but we have no choice," Karunawathi told AFP. "It is also difficult to find firewood and it is also becoming very expensive."

According to Usgs.gov, when the stress on the edge overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the earth's crust and cause the shaking that we feel. A seafloor earthquake is called a submarine earthquake. They generate by far the most dangerous tsunamis, caused by the sudden displacements over large areas.&nbsp;

<h2>Earthquakes reported in other areas of India</h2>

Other than Andaman and Nicobar islands, an earthquake&nbsp;was also reported in Assam at 11.03 am on July 7. Other than that earthquake in Karnataka was also reported a few days back, which was the third one in the week in the state. It measured 2.5&nbsp;on the Richter scale in the&nbsp;Dakshina Kannada district. While just four minutes earlier,&nbsp;Sullia taluk in the Dakshina Kannada district also experienced tremors recording 2.2 on the Richter scale. Manoj Ranjan, the commissioner of Karnataka's disaster management authority, said that "This type of earthquake does not create any harm to the local community, though there might be slight shaking, the chances of occurrence of earthquakes are very less and the possibility of damage is low".

Such frequent earthquakes are not a good sign. Experts have already warned that earthquakes, much higher in magnitude, which can cause a lot of damage may occur in the future. It is high time now that we start protecting and conserving our environment, otherwise many other disasters may occur in the future.&nbsp;

As reported by AP, &nbsp;the statement said, "Due to limited demand for the vaccine and recipient country challenges with distribution and absorption, they were not accepted.″ In all, Canada donated 8.9 million doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine — 4.8 million doses from its main supply and 4.1 million doses that it bought from the COVAX vaccine-sharing program.

While the government has stopped short of imposing a full lockdown, as seen in Chinese cities such as Shanghai, most facilities in Macau are shut and restaurants can only provide takeaway. The more than 600,000 residents in the former Portuguese colony have been asked to stay at home when possible and are required to take part in three citywide COVID-19 tests this week. People are also required to take rapid antigen tests in between.

NATO says no plans to send troops to Sweden or Finland after Putin threatens to retaliate

One person has died and four people have been seriously injured in a Fourth of July shooting at a residence in Kenosha, Wisconsin, police said.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. at a home in the 6300 block of 25th Avenue when authorities responded to reports of a shooting at the house and encountered a “chaotic scene with obvious evidence of multiple gunshots being fired,” according to a statement released by the City of Kenosha Police Department.

Officers have a house surrounded by crime scene tape as the investigation into the July Fourth shooting continues. Authorities say they do not have a suspect in custody and have not commented on a possible motive.

“There were five victims from this shooting, all adults,” authorities continued. “One of the victims is deceased. The other four victims were transported to local hospitals with two being transferred to Milwaukee area hospitals due to serious injuries.”

As of now, the Kenosha Police Department say there is no known motive, no suspects in custody and that the investigation into the shooting is “open and active.”

Scientists at the Japan's University of Yamanashi have successfully produced cloned mice using freeze-dried cells in a technique they believe could one day help conserve species and overcome challenges with current biobanking methods. The United Nations has warned that extinctions are accelerating worldwide and at least a million species could disappear because of human-induced impacts like climate change.

As reported by AFP, facilities have sprung up globally to preserve samples from endangered species with the goal of preventing their extinction by future cloning. These samples are generally cryopreserved using liquid nitrogen or kept at extremely low temperatures, which can be costly and vulnerable to power outages. They also usually involve sperm and egg cells, which can be difficult or impossible to harvest from old or infertile animals. 
&nbsp; 
Scientists wanted to see whether they could solve those problems by freeze-drying somatic cells, any cell that isn't a sperm or egg cell and attempting to produce clones. They experimented with two types of mice cells and found that, while freeze-drying killed them and caused significant DNA damage, they could still produce cloned blastocysts -- a ball of cells that develops into an embryo.

From these, the scientists extracted stem cell lines that they used to create 75 cloned mice. One of the mice survived a year and nine months, and the team also successfully mated female and male cloned mice with natural-born partners and produced normal pups. The cloned mice produced fewer offspring than would have been expected from natural-born mice, and one of the stem cell lines developed from male cells produced only female mice clones.

The United Nations has warned that extinctions are accelerating worldwide and at least a million species could disappear because of human-induced impacts like climate change. As reported by AFP, facilities have sprung up globally to preserve samples from endangered species with the goal of preventing their extinction by future cloning. These samples are generally cryopreserved using liquid nitrogen or kept at extremely low temperatures, which can be costly and vulnerable to power outages. They also usually involve sperm and egg cells, which can be difficult or impossible to harvest from old or infertile animals. Scientists wanted to see whether they could solve those problems by freeze-drying somatic cells, any cell that isn't a sperm or egg cell and attempting to produce clones. They experimented with two types of mice cells and found that, while freeze-drying killed them and caused significant DNA damage, they could still produce cloned blastocysts -- a ball of cells that develops into an embryo. One of the mice survived a year and nine months, and the team also successfully mated female and male cloned mice with natural-born partners and produced normal pups. The cloned mice produced fewer offspring than would have been expected from natural-born mice, and one of the stem cell lines developed from male cells produced only female mice clones. Teruhiko Wakayama, a professor at the University of Yamanashi's Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, who helped lead the study published in the journal Nature Communications this month told AFP, "Improvement should not be difficult. We believe that in the future we will be able to reduce abnormalities and increase the birth rate by searching for freeze-drying protectant agents and improving drying methods." But everything changed in a moment. Just a few days ago, the new headlines from Udaipur read- ‘A tailor in Maldas street of Udaipur murdered by two men.’&nbsp;

At first, it seemed like those one-off murder incidents that take place due to some rivalry. But then, more information started pouring in. The man was killed for sharing the ruling party spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s viral hate speech video on Prophet Muhammad.

The two accused, Riyaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad, also made a video recording the whole crime and then accepted their crime in the same video. &nbsp;

And then, Udaipur changed.&nbsp;

The news started spreading like wildfire. The video was retweeted and shared on Instagram and Whatsapp multiple times. &nbsp;

In no time, both the murder accused were arrested from the neighbouring district of Rajsamand. The state government was quick in responding, and special police forces arrived on the scene along with the highest-ranking cops of Rajasthan. The Ministry of Home Affairs decided to send the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to further investigate the cause of the crime.&nbsp;

In no time, a Pakistani link was found, with the murderers being in touch with a terrorist organisation called Al-sufa, a remote sleeper organisation of ISIS. Soon, from a murder case, it became a case of terrorism.&nbsp;

It turned out that the accused had earlier made a video, ISIS-style, warning the victim that his end is near. The victim reported it to the police, but the police instead of filing a First Information Report (FIR), tried to mediate the case. They clearly failed to understand the gravity of the situation.&nbsp;

The ruling party’s pro-Hindutva politicians have started calling this a way to terrorise the Hindus against following their religion. Where were these people when Nupur Sharma disrespected Prophet Muhammad? When everyone pretended to be not seeing and listening when one section of the society was being targeted, didn't they realise it takes no time for the tables to turn?&nbsp;

A reporter from a reputable Asian news agency was seen asking the wife of the late victim at his funeral if she thinks that the accused should be hanged. What do we expect her to say? Why are we putting words into her mouth? Of course, she said, yes, they should be hanged. Can we do that right away? Is that the law of our land?&nbsp;

Thousands of protestors are rallying on the streets.&nbsp;What are they doing on the roads putting up a show with saffron flags in their hands? And why are they even allowed to do all this when a curfew is there in place in the whole state? Do we really need such a ‘show of strength’ at this time?&nbsp;

Are we ready to isolate one whole community on the basis of these one-off incidents? These protestors are not just Hindus, but also Muslims. It is time for the Muslims to prove that they are 'patriotic' by condemning the incident, not just because they think it's horrific but also because they don't want to be a victim of retaliatory anger from the Hindus. &nbsp;

An average Hindu person, worried about increased expenses due to covid-related health issues and looming unemployment with talks of recession, will need to prove that they are a 'good Hindu' by criticising (sufficiently) the ‘Muslim’ accused, or the retaliatory violence doesn't spare anyone just because they were born Hindus. One needs to keep proving their Hinduness each time such an incident happens, or the hate wave will submerge them as well.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court called out Nupur Sharma by saying, "this lady is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country,” but it has been a few days since this incident happened, what actions were taken by the courts? Will the court come to a decision on the basis of popular opinion, or can the court act as the defender of the law and the constitution in this country and follow the process of law?&nbsp;

This incident leaves a flurry of questions behind. What led the murder accused to do this crime? Is it just mindless incitement or systematic brainwashing? &nbsp;

Anyway, the bustling streets of Udaipur are empty for now. The fried delicacies of Maldas street are nowhere to be seen. Tourists have returned, and&nbsp;businesses are incurring losses with a prolonged curfew.&nbsp;

The country is busy debating &nbsp;the 'Udaipur terror case', but our mouths are shut, and our voices can't reach you. We are in a state of lockdown, with no internet, reading in the daily newspaper what the country, and the world, thinks of us.&nbsp;
