Researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States have developed a new N95 face mask that can not only reduce COVID-19 spread but also kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus upon contact with it. The mask can potentially be worn longer, causing less plastic waste as it does not need to be replaced as frequently.

As reported by PTI, Edmund Palermo, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute said, “We think the work is the first step toward longer-lasting, self-sterilising personal protective equipment, such as the N95 respirator. It may help reduce transmission of airborne pathogens in general."

In research recently published in the journal Applied ACS Materials and Interfaces, the team successfully grafted broad-spectrum antimicrobial polymers onto the polypropylene filters used in N95 face masks. The active filtration layers in N95 masks are very sensitive to chemical modification. It can make them perform worse in terms of filtration, so they essentially no longer perform like N95s. They are made out of polypropylene, which is difficult to chemically modify.

The team, including researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, attached antimicrobial quaternary ammonium polymers to the fibre surfaces of nonwoven polypropylene fabrics using ultraviolet (UV)-initiated grafting. The team used only UV light and acetone in their process, which is widely available, to make it easy to implement.

The process can be applied to already manufactured polypropylene filters, rather than necessitating the development of new ones, the researchers said, as reported by PTI. The team did see a decrease in filtration efficiency when the process was applied directly to the filtration layer of N95 masks, but the solution is straightforward, they said. The user could wear an unaltered N95 mask along with another polypropylene layer with the antimicrobial polymer on top, according to the researchers.

Mullah Omar founded the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban) in 1994 and served as its first leader until his death in 2013 His death remained concealed until July 2015, during which time the Taliban continued to issue statements in his name.

Omar fled from Kandahar to Zabul Province and his wives moved to Pakistan, but the Taliban continued to claim him as their leader, despite him taking almost no active role in the movement.&nbsp;

Although the US put a $ 10 million bounty on Omar’s head, he hid within walking distance of US bases in Zabul Province.

&nbsp;When the US Armed Forces began building Forward Operating Base Lagman just a few hundred meters from his hideout, he decided to move. He relocated to a shack in a riverside hamlet in Shinkay District, southeast of Qalat. This Twitter post claims that the shown vehicle was used by Mullah Omar to travel.

Economic growth in the eurozone floundered in June, a key survey showed Tuesday, hit by soaring inflation. S&amp;P Global's closely-watched monthly purchasing managers' index (PMI), which measures corporate confidence, fell to 52.0 in June from 54.8 in May.

The reading, which was a 16-month low, however, remains above the 50-point level signalling expansion.

"Growing fears of a recession are hammering the euro lower, whilst the dollar is soaring on bets that the Fed will keep hiking rates aggressively to tame inflation," City Index analyst Fiona Cincotta told AFP.

"Today's PMI data from Europe have highlighted the risk of slowing growth at the end of the second quarter and raise the prospect of a contraction in activity in the coming months," he added.

By contrast, most Asian stock markets closed higher on growing speculation that US President Joe Biden is about to roll back some of the Trump-era tariffs on Chinese goods.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Friday inscribed the culture of cooking borshch soup in Ukraine on its list of endangered cultural heritage, in a move urged by Kyiv but vehemently opposed by Moscow, as reported by AFP.

The culture of Ukrainian borshch cooking "was today inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding" by a UNESCO committee. The decision was approved after a fast-track process prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the "negative impact on this tradition" caused by the war, UNESCO said.

Ukraine considers borshch -- a thick nourishing soup usually made with beetroot -- as a national dish although it is also widely consumed in Russia, other ex-Soviet countries and Poland. Kyiv hailed the move, with Ukraine's Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko saying on Telegram that "victory in the borshch war is ours... will win both in the war of borshch and in this war."

Adding the soup culture to the UNESCO list aims at mobilising attention to ensure it is preserved despite risks to its existence. The committee noted that the war had "threatened the viability" of the soup culture in Ukraine.

"The displacement of people (poses a threat)... as people are unable not only to cook or grow local vegetables for borshch but also to come together... which undermines the social and cultural well-being of communities," said UNESCO.

"Ukrainian borshch -- the national version of borscht consumed in several countries of the region -- is an integral part of Ukrainian family and community life."

St Petersburg police said they were investigating the fire and working to identify a suspect. The video shows the man putting the flamethrower back in the trunk and then driving away. A photo supplied by the group shows the flag with a large hole. Police say the suspect arrested in the Buffalo massacre is a white nationalist.&nbsp;

Akai said a “social system and facade of normalcy based on oppression, colonialism and exploitation” cause such attacks.

Three people had been rescued as of 3:00 pm local time (0700 GMT) and were taken to hospital for treatment, authorities said. Dramatic footage provided by Hong Kong authorities showed a person being airlifted onto a helicopter while waves crashed over the deck of the semi-submerged ship below. The three survivors said other crew members may have been swept away by waves before the first helicopter arrived, according to a government statement.

The ship's location recorded wind speeds of 144 kilometres per hour and waves that were 10 metres high, authorities said. The Government Flying Service dispatched two sorties of fixed-wing aircraft and four helicopter sorties, with mainland Chinese authorities also dispatching a rescue boat. Rescuers said they would increase the search area "due to the large number of people missing" and extend the operation into the night if conditions allowed.

Hundreds of Sudanese protesters took to the streets of the capital Khartoum and its suburbs for a fourth straight day Sunday demanding an end to military rule. A violent crackdown by the security forces during mass rallies on Thursday killed nine people, the deadliest day for several months in the long-running protests against a military takeover last October led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as reported by AFP.

Recent protests have seen crowds burn tyres and barricade roads with bricks, with security forces using live bullets, firing barrages of tear gas canisters and using powerful water cannons, according to medics and the United Nations. Demonstrators demand a restoration of the transition to civilian rule that was launched after the 2019 ouster of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir, which the coup derailed.

A demonstrator Muayyad Mohamed told AFP in central Khartoum, "We will continue this sit-in until the coup is overturned, and we have a fully civilian government."&nbsp;

Nine killed in violent crackdown on anti-coup protesters in Sudan

South African chemical engineer Wendy Vesela has found ways of turning the spiky green and black caterpillars -- which are packed with protein and iron -- into flour that can be used in savoury biscuits, and sweet chocolate protein bars, cereals or smoothies. He wants to change the way edible caterpillars, popularly known as "mopane worms" are viewed and eaten.

For many people, particularly from western European backgrounds, the idea of eating insects is still riddled with fear and inhibition. But they can be a valuable source of nutrition and farming them is not detrimental to the environment. When steamed and sliced, mopane pieces can also be used as pizza toppings.&nbsp;

Vesela says she has found domestic and international customers for her organic products. &nbsp;Edible insects and worms may indeed be gaining popularity in Western cultures. But food anthropologist Anna Trapido insists that the trend should not be seen as just another dietary fad, a "kind of adventure tourism, where you get a badge" for eating them.

"Mopane needs to be treated with respect because they are part of people's emotional, spiritual, culinary genres," she said.

Vesela tried to woo reluctant customers with biscuits and protein bars at a recent food fair in Johannesburg's upmarket Sandton district, as reported by AFP.

"I won't eat a worm. I'm sorry, it's disgusting. But if you give it to me in the form of chocolate... it's really delicious," said Gail Odendaal, 38, walking away with a bag of protein bars.

For many people, particularly from western European backgrounds, the idea of eating insects is still riddled with fear and inhibition. As reported by AFP, Gladkov said he visited the site soon after the explosions, which hit five streets to the north of the city centre. Two of the injured -- a man and a child -- were hospitalised, while the other two were treated at the scene, he said.&nbsp;

Since Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine on February 24, Russia has repeatedly accused Kyiv of conducting strikes on Russian soil, particularly in the Belgorod region. At the beginning of April, Gladkov accused Ukraine of attacking a fuel depot in the city with two helicopters.&nbsp;
