This takes the total number of parliamentarians suspended in this session to 141, making them unable to take part in the remainder of the winter session. Among the suspended, a few are under the lens for their conduct in the House.

Among the Lok Sabha members who were suspended by Speaker Om Birla include National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, NCP leader Supriya Sule, Congress members Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, and Samajwadi Party's Dimple Yadav.

The current session of the parliament has been facing repeated disruptions over the parliament security breach issue, during which two intruders entered the Lok Sabha floor, jumped over desks, and released coloured smoke from canisters.

Reacting to his suspension,&nbsp;Congress MP Shashi Tharoor told ANI news agency, "It is clear that they want an opposition-mukt (free) Lok Sabha and they will do something similar in Rajya Sabha. At this point, unfortunately, we have to start writing obituaries for parliamentary democracy in India...Today, in solidarity with my colleagues, I too joined the protest and everybody, who was present, has been suspended for the rest of the session which means they want to pass their bills without any discussion. I think it is a betrayal of Parliamentary democracy..."

<h2>Oppn wants Amit Shah to speak on security breach&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

The opposition parties have been demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah address the issue in the parliament, while some have also been seeking his resignation.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who was also suspended last week, said, “This government has reached the apex of dictatorship. They have the majority, and they are wielding the stick of power.”&nbsp;

“They want to run Parliament like a party office. But that cannot happen. We were eager for a discussion. The productivity of Parliament before December 13 is for all to see. It seems they find it easier to talk to the media, but are scared to speak in Parliament," he added.

The central government has assured that it was taking the parliament security breach issue very seriously and appropriate action would be taken.

Last week, seven personnel of the Lok Sabha secretariat were suspended over the issue.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has maintained that any security-related incident in the House comes under the purview of the secretariat, and it will not let the centre intervene.

The Hamas group released a new video showing three elderly Israeli hostages, who can be purportedly seen denouncing Israel as a “criminal, terrorist”.

The three have been identified by the Israeli military as 79-year-old Chaim Peri, 80-year-old Yoram Metzger, and 84-year-old Amiram Cooper.

These three were among 240 Israelis who were taken as hostages by the Hamas militants during the October 7 terrorist assault.

<h2>'Suffering greatly'</h2>

The clip, which was shared on Telegram by Hamas on Monday (Dec 18), shows Peri saying that he and two others who have health issues are “suffering greatly in very harsh conditions”.

“We are the generation who built the foundation for the creation of Israel. We are the ones who started the IDF military. We don’t understand why we have been abandoned here,” he said, referring to the Israeli armed forces.

“You have to release us from here. It does not matter at what cost. We don’t want to be casualties as a direct result of the IDF military air strikes. Release us with no conditions,” he added.

The video concludes with the three men saying in unison, “Don’t let us grow old here.”

<h2>IDF slams Hamas for 'showing cruelty'</h2>

Israeli Defence Force (IDF) spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari promptly termed the latest video as “atrocious terror.”

“It shows the cruelty of Hamas against elderly civilians, innocents, who require medical attention,” Hagari said at a press conference, according to Times of Israel newspaper.

“The world must work to allow medical aid and to verify their condition.”

Roni, son of one of the hostages, Yoram Metzger, told Hebrew media outlets that his father, a diabetic who has mobility issues, looked “years older” and thin.

“Father is not in a good condition. Everything must be done to bring [the hostages] home,” he told Kan news.

Speaking to the Ynet outlet, Metzger said that Cooper and Peri also “don’t look in good condition, not themselves. You don’t see a shred of liveliness on their faces.”

Hamas releases new hostage video, Israel terms it ‘atrocious terror’

Social distancing and face masks are gradually making a comeback in many countries amidst the fresh bout of coronavirus outbreak that is being fuelled by highly transmissible JN.1 variant.

First detected in Luxembourg, JN.1 is believed to have evolved from the Pirola variant (BA.2.86), which itself stems from the Omicron sub-variant.

More than five countries have recorded fresh COVID-19 cases, with some even reporting deaths.

According to the World Health Organisation, Pirola and its variants accounted for 17 per cent of the Sars-CoV-2 sequences uploaded to the global database Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID).

By the beginning of December, more than half of these sequences were that of JN.1. In the United States, JN.1 accounted for 15 per cent to 29 per cent of the circulating COVID-19 variants.

Cases have been detected in the US, some European countries, Singapore, China and India.

<h2>Singapore </h2>

The Southeast Asian country gas recorded more than 56,000 cases between December 4 and 10.

Singapore’s health ministry said that the country saw an increase in hospitalisation, mostly among those above the age of 60.

“Cases infected by JN.1, a sublineage of BA.2.86, currently account for the vast majority of the COVID-19 cases in Singapore. Based on the available international and local data, there is currently no clear indication that BA.2.86 or JN.1 are more transmissible or cause more severe disease than other circulating variants,” it said.

<h2>Indonesia</h2>

Covid cases have risen by 13 per cent compared to November in Indonesia, with capital Jakarta seeing an average of 200 cases per day, The Star reported.

Around 90 per cent of these cases are asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic and hospitalisations are under control, the officials said.

<h2>Malaysia</h2>

Covid cases doubled in a week in Malaysia ahead of Christmas and New Year. Cases have jumped from 6,796 in the last week of November to nearly 13,000 by December 10, the New Strait Times reported.

However, the government has ruled out imposing a lockdown and is focusing on community tracing via its TRIIS (test, report, isolate, inform and seek) system to curb the spread.

Malaysian Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad urged people to wear masks and advised senior citizens and those with underlying medical issues to get a Covid booster dose.

<h2>China</h2>

China has seen around seven JN.1 Covid cases so far, with the Chinese authorities describing it a "low epidemic level", Global Times reported.

All these infections are mild and asymptomatic cases.

JN.1 Covid variant drives fresh outbreak, more than six countries affected

India’s southern Tamil Nadu state, which was battered by Cyclone Michaung, witnessed another bout of rain on Monday (Dec 18) as schools, colleges and banks were ordered shut in some parts owing to the inclement weather.

Several areas in some districts, including Kanyakumari, are inundated with neck-deep water.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘heavy rain alert’ for the state for the next seven days.

A Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) bulletin said a cyclonic circulation is now seen prevailing over the Comorin area and its neighbourhood, extending up to mid-tropospheric levels.

Among the districts that are said to be worst affected are Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi. Chennai, on the other hand, is predicted to get light to moderate rain in some areas till Monday. However, people are postponing their travel plans to the city due to rumours of heavy rain.

Kayalpattinam in Thoothukudi recorded its highest-ever rainfall of 932 mm in the last 24 hours. This is reported as more than their annual rainfall received in a day.&nbsp;

On Sunday (Dec 17), Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, deployed State Ministers and top bureaucrats to monitor the flood situation and relief distribution in Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts, which are witnessing heavy rain.&nbsp;

An official release said Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena held a meeting with the Collectors of these districts through video conferencing and urged them to take all steps to avoid damage and loss.

Many lakes in these affected areas are said to have reached their full capacity, with the possibility of flood lurking around if the current spell of rain continues.

Flash floods were reported in many places in Thoothukudi. Efforts to rectify breaches in water bodies were carried out by district administration.

A car crashed into a stationary SUV that was part of President Joe Biden's motorcade when the president left his campaign headquarters in Delaware. First lady Jill Biden and the president were said to be safe and unharmed.

A loud noise was heard on Sunday (Dec 17) at 8 pm (local time) when the sedan hit a US Secret Service vehicle that was stationed to close off a nearby intersection about 40 metres (130 feet) from Biden.

13 die after powerful storm causes sports club’s roof to collapse in Argentina

Three masons who were carrying out repairs of the ancient walls around the Old City of Kairouan in Tunisia — a UNESCO world heritage — died after a section of the wall collapsed.

The incident happened on Saturday (Dec 16) after a 30m section of the wall near the Gate of the Floggers crashed to the ground.

The Kairouan medina, which is surrounded by massive city walls, was under renovation when an accident took place according to Tunisia's Civil Protection.

“A team was carrying out restoration work” on the 3km (two mile) long wall that surrounds the Old City, department spokesperson Moez Tria told AFP, adding that the accident “could be linked to heavy rains in the area in recent days”.

Two more workers were said to be injured and have suffered fractures.

<h2>Site closed for public&nbsp;</h2>

Tria said a perimeter had been set up to stop people from walking under part of the wall which is still at risk of further collapse.

Located in the centre of Tunisia in a plain at an almost equal distance from the sea and the mountain, Kairouan city was founded in 670 AD, and is one of North Africa's holiest cities and a leading tourist attraction.

Its rich architectural heritage includes the Great Mosque, with its marble and porphyry columns, and the 9th-century Mosque of the Three Gates.

<h2>Historical significance&nbsp;</h2>

It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, and is home to the Mosque of the Three Doors, the oldest known mosque with a sculpted façade.

A Canadian youth was charged and arrested with terrorism related offences in connection with antisemitism activity, which has been witnessing&nbsp;a spike across the world after the Israel-Hamas war.

The police arrested the youth, whose information has not been shared citing the accused’s age, on Friday (Dec 15) for facilitating terrorist activity by communicating instructional material related to an explosive substance, CTV News reported.

The accused is further charged with knowingly instructing a person to carry out terrorist activity against "Jewish persons”, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a press release.

Noting the rise of using the internet in terrorism-related activities, the police said it has arrested five young people on such offences since June 2023.

The police said that these activities are especially prevalent among young people, urging the adults in authority positions to watch for early warning signs of radicalisation.

“Those include dehumanisation of others, extreme anti-government attitudes and clear statements of intention to carry out violent acts,” the statement added.

Reacting to the development,&nbsp;Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe expressed shock over the incident and asked the police to tighten security around synagogues and other Jewish institutions.

“I was shocked to learn the details of a planned attack against Ottawa's Jewish community,” Sutcliffe said on X.

“There has been a rise in antisemitism in Ottawa in recent weeks.”

He added he was grateful that strong investigative work by the RCMP and Ottawa police was able to avert an attack. He said police would continue to patrol synagogues and other Jewish institutions.

At least nine workers were killed, including three women, after an explosion ripped through a factory in India’s Nagur in Maharashtra on Sunday (Dec 17).

The blast happened at Solar Industries India Limited in the Bazargaon village around 9 am (local time), with some media reports claiming a delayed response from the authorities.

The incident took place when labourers were packaging defence products. The death toll is expected to rise further, local media reported.

The company deals with the supplies of explosives and other defence equipment for the country's defence.

“Nine people died after there was a blast in the solar explosive company in Bazargaon village of Nagpur. This blast happened at the time of packing in the cast booster plant,” Harsh Poddar, Superintendent of Police, Nagpur Rural, told ANI news agency.

Satyanarayan Nuwal, the chairman of Solar Industries, told Hindustan Times newspaper, “I do not know the exact number of casualties, but I was informed that five to six persons died due to the explosive blast.”

<h2>Govt announces compensation&nbsp;</h2>

He added that he is in constant touch with the company personnel in this regard.

Expressing grief over the incident, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced compensation for the victims’ family members on social media X.

"It is very unfortunate that nine people including 6 women died in the explosion at Solar Industries in Nagpur. It is a company that manufactures drones and explosives for the defence forces,” he said.
