Official data indicates that 9,937 junior doctors, constituting 80.8 per cent of the trainee workforce, have resigned and gone on strike at 99 general hospitals to protest government plans to significantly augment medical school admissions in response to shortages and an ageing population.

Despite broad public support for the reforms, the government has set a Thursday (March 29) deadline for doctors to resume their duties, cautioning legal action, including prosecution and license suspension, for those who defy the order.

Following successful conservation efforts and the cessation of commercial whaling in 1976, the humpback whale population in the region steadily increased until 2012.

However, over the past 10 years, researchers reported a sharp decline in whale numbers, as published in the Royal Society Open Science journal.

A team of 75 scientists utilised the largest photo-identification dataset ever compiled for a large marine mammal, spanning from 2002 to 2021, to track North Pacific humpback populations.

Using images of the unique tail patterns of the whales, the team recorded over 200,000 sightings of more than 33,000 individuals.

Contrary to expectations that the humpback population would stabilise at its natural carrying capacity, there was instead a significant and steep decline observed from 2012 to 2021.&nbsp;

The number of humpbacks fell by 20 per cent, dropping from approximately 33,000 individuals to just over 26,600.

For a subgroup of whales wintering in Hawaii, the decline was even more pronounced at 34 per cent.

A critical factor identified was the occurrence of the strongest and longest marine heatwave on record from 2014 to 2016, affecting the Pacific northeast with temperature anomalies surpassing three to six degrees Celsius.

This heatwave altered the marine ecosystem and the availability of humpback prey, leading to a more severe decline than anticipated.

Pacific whale population decline possibly linked to heatwaves, suggests study

People in the UK can get their first glimpse on Wednesday of banknotes bearing King Charles III's image.

They will be revealed to the public at the opening of the Bank of England's "The Future of Money" exhibition.

The four new banknotes with the king's portrait -- £5, £10, £20 and £50 -- go on display at the central bank's in-house museum at its London headquarters, before entering circulation on June 5.

Based on a photograph owned by the royal household and made available in 2013, Charles approved the final designs of the notes featuring his engraved portrait in late 2022.

That was just months after he became king following the death that September of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.

"This is the first time that the Bank of England has issued a note with a new monarch on it, because Queen Elizabeth has been on our banknotes since the 1960s," the museum's curator Jennifer Adam explained.

"So it's the first time that we as a public will have seen this transition," she told AFP at a press preview.

The landmark comes as Charles battles a cancer diagnosis announced earlier this month. He has withdrawn from public-facing duties while he undergoes treatment.&nbsp;

- Gradual phase-in -

Banknotes bearing Elizabeth's portrait will remain legal tender, with the new cash "gradually replacing" those withdrawn "due to being old and worn", Adam said.

"So it will be some time before there's plentiful supply around."

The new notes are polymer -- which has been slowly replacing paper money in the UK since 2016 -- and feature Charles' image on the front as well as in the see-through security window.

Coins bearing Charles' head -- based on a portrait by British sculptor Martin Jennings -- which entered circulation in December 2022 are also on temporary display at the museum.&nbsp;

The site details the history of the Bank of England -- which has been issuing some banknotes since it was established in 1694 -- as well as a multitude of other money-making information.

It highlights how the bank took over the printing of notes from the finance ministry in 1928.&nbsp;

A £1 note series launched in 1960 was its first to feature a portrait of the monarch, while from 1970 they began to include historical figures on the other side.

Winston Churchill (£5), Florence Nightingale (£10), William Shakespeare (£20) and Alan Turing (£50) have all since graced banknotes.

- Current trends -

One constant on all Bank of England-issued cash for the past 330 years is its Britannia emblem, depicting the helmeted female warrior holding a trident and shield.

The museum also permanently houses centuries-old coins and gold bars -- the bank stores around 400,000 in its vaults -- as well as its first banknotes produced in the late 17th century.

"The Future of Money" exhibition, set to run alongside the permanent displays until September 2025, delves into modern trends, from the emergence of digital currencies to the current lifespan of cash.&nbsp;

All planned aid convoys into the north have been denied by Israeli authorities in recent weeks. The last convoy allowed in was on January 23, according to the World Health Organization.

Laerke cited an event that occurred on Sunday (Feb 25) in which a convoy led by the Palestinian Red Crescent (PRCS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to evacuate 24 patients from the besieged Al Amal hospital in the southern city of Khan Yunis was delayed for seven hours, resulting in the arrest of paramedics.

"The WHO-led convoy was delayed by Israeli authorities for several hours as soon as it left the hospital, even though all staff personnel and vehicles had previously coordinated with the Israeli side," Laerke said to reporters in Geneva.

He claimed that "the Israeli military stripped all paramedics of their uniforms and ordered patients and personnel out of ambulances."

The convoy was forced to abandon another 31 patients at Amal hospital, which is no longer operational following 40 attacks in the past month alone that have killed at least 25 people.

According to Laerke, "Three PRCS paramedics were subsequently held, despite having previously given their personal information to the Israeli soldiers." There is just one that has been made available.

The New Zealand government has announced its intention to revoke a groundbreaking law that would have prohibited tobacco sales for future generations, a move set to take effect from July.

Popocatepetl, affectionately known as "Popo" by locals, stands as Mexico's most active volcano.

With an elevation of 5,393 metres (17,693 feet), the mountain, whose name translates to ‘smoking mountain’ in the Nahuatl indigenous language, is situated just 70 km (43.5 miles) southeast of Mexico City.

Since 1994, Popocatépetl has been consistently active, undergoing periods of heightened activity that, in December 2000, resulted in the evacuation of 40,000 residents from their homes.

In May 2023, ash emissions prompted authorities to establish evacuation shelters, close nearby schools, and temporarily suspend operations at airfields, including Mexico City's Benito Juárez International Airport.

Highlighting the vulnerability of aircraft to volcanic material, the US Geological Survey (USGS) noted that ash particles can cause damage to the fuselage blades and significantly impede engine performance.

Despite intermittent increases in activity, the USGS cautioned that Popocatépetl has the potential for more severe consequences.
