<p>Australia`s Test captain Tim Paine is confident he will be ready for the start of the Ashes series against England in December following surgery to fix a bulging disc in his neck.<br />

The 36-year-old had been suffering from severe pain down his left side caused by a pinched nerve and, on the advice of surgeons, underwent the procedure on Tuesday.<br />

Paine said he hopes to return to full training by the end of October after a six-week recuperation period.<br />

"The precedent has been set, guys have got back from it reasonably quickly," he told SEN radio. "We`ve been talking to all those players, their physios, their surgeons to track their rehab plans and get me back as quick as we can.<br />
<br />
"I`m pretty confident outside of that six weeks I`ll be ready to go within a week. That gives me plenty of time (for the Ashes). "I won`t be as fit or as strong as I`d like to be. If I am moving freely, I`ll give a good fist of it."<br />

The first test against England at the Gabba in Brisbane is scheduled to start on Dec. 8 and will be followed by four further matches in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.<br />

For the unversed, the Black Caps had arrived in Pakistan for a limited-overs tour, comprising three ODIs and five T20Is, after a long gap of 18 years. Their last international tour to the Asian country was in December 2003.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The security officials with the NZ team have been satisfied with security arrangements made by the Govt of Pakistan throughout their stay here. PCB is willing to continue the scheduled matches. However, cricket lovers in Pakistan and the world over will be disappointed by this last-minute withdrawal," the NZC board's official statement read.</p>

<p>Following the tour cancellation, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has expressed his concerns for Pakistan cricket, who were now slowly getting on its feet with regard to hosting games on home soil. <p>Gambhir believes that the CSK captain is trying to be a mentor and a wicketkeeper for the three-time champions in the twilight of his T20 career. “MS Dhoni was a player who would’ve actually batted at number 4 or 5, but we’ve seen in the first leg that he normally bats at number 6 or 7. There are times when he’s actually pushed Sam Curran before him as well," Gambhir told Star Sports. &nbsp;</p>

<p>"The reason behind this is that he’s probably trying to be a mentor and a wicketkeeper who can lead the side and keep wickets. If the situation comes to a point where he probably has to play 8 or 10 balls, he can just go out there and whack them," Gambhir added.&nbsp;</p>
